Politics / We Will Continue With Revolution Now Protest Despite Sowore's Arrest- Organizers by itsdumebi(m): 12:46pm On Aug 03, 2019
POLITICSNIGERIA.COM

The Organizers of the #RevolutionNow Protest have announced that the Protest will go on as planned despite the arrest of its leader, Omoyele Sowore.In a statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA on Saturday morning, signed by the acting chairman, Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, they alleged that the Presidency was behind the arrest. Read below;"We have confirmed that Omoyele Sowore, the leader of the #RevolutionNow protests have been arrested.""This arrest is not surprising to us.

We know that the presidency has tried everything in their powers to discredit and dampen our struggle."

"For the past three days, the presidency has paid hugely to social media influencers and such others to discredit the #RevolutionNow all to no avail!"

"The presidency even went as far as attacking Amnesty International believing that their blackmails would appeal to Nigerians."

"They also paid some ex-activists to counter us publicly but the mass of working people stood by #RevolutionNow!"

"Lagos branch of the African Action Congress (AAC) condemns Sowore's arrest and Buhari's stubborn and cruel anti-democratic credentials. We believe that the #RevolutionNow will outlive all forces of repression, particularly the Buhari presidency."

"We call on the Coalition for Revolution (CORE) and other organizers to continue with mobilization. A failed government cannot use force to make the mass of people to accept its failure.March on! Mobilize on!!We will win!!!"

Politics / Shiites Suspend All Protests by itsdumebi(m): 3:11pm On Jul 31, 2019
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria a.k.a Shiites have announced the suspension of all Free El-zakzaky street protests in Abuja.This development is coming a day after the Inspector general of Police, Mohammed Adamu announced the proscription of all activities of the shiites.

Below is a statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA by the group, signed by its media chief, Ibrahim Musa;

"The Islamic Movement in Nigeria do hereby announce to the general public and the international community that it has temporarily suspended its Free Zakzaky street protests to allow for some new openings into the resolution of the problems, especially the court case instituted by our lawyers on the proscription order made by the federal government this week."

"It has taken this step in good faith out of respect for some eminent people and groups, whose input in the resolution of the problems appears genuine and we sincerely hope an amicable way could be found to solve the crises surrounding the illegal detention of our leader for almost four years now.""If at all any protests occur anywhere in the country, it might be this notice hasn’t reach those in the field or this message is misunderstood or it is some security agents who are mischievously behind it as they have been doing in an attempt to smear our image and be seen as unruly people rather than as victims of savage oppression since 2015."

"The Islamic Movement wishes to thank both national and international civil rights activists and organizations who have been busy demanding the protection of our fundamental human rights as enshrined in the constitution."

"We also thank the press, both national and international, and the social media activists for the full coverage of our activities throughout the struggle for justice.""We are committed to exploring the new openings we have seen in resolving this protracted issue. We, therefore, reiterate our demand that our leader, his wife and several others in detention be given their freedom denied to them since 2015."

Politics / INEC Reacts To Fire Incident In Anambra, Reveals Next Line Of Action by itsdumebi(m): 7:48pm On Feb 12, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has reacted to a fire incident that engulfed two containers filled with INEC electoral materials in Anambra State earlier today.

In a statement signed on Tuesday evening, made available to PoliticsNGR, the commission revealed that 4695 card readers were destroyed in the fire. The Statement read;

"Further to our statement of Sunday 10th February 2019, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regrets to inform the public that there has been another lire incident, this time in its Anambra State office.

This is the third of such incidents in the last 12 days, following closely behind those of Isiala Ngwa and Qua'an Pan Local Government offices in Abia and Plateau States respectively.

While the Commission awaits the details of the latest incident, it notes with some relief that there was no fatality or injury reported. Initial assessment however confirms that a total of 4695 of the Smart Card Readers were destroyed in the inferno.

While this is, no doubt, a setback to our preparations for the smooth conduct of the elections in Anambra State, the Commission has taken immediate measures to ameliorate the situation, by mopping up some of the spare Card Readers from other States to deploy to Anambra State.

With the steps so far taken. the Commission remains confident that the election in the state will proceed as scheduled.
We have in the meantime reported the incident to the Police and the Fire Service and investigations into the cause have commenced.

We take this opportunity to commend the Fire Service for its response, which prevented the spread of the fire and averted more damage."

PoliticsNGR has gotten more details on the rejection of a motion filed by the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen by the court of Appeal.

It was gathered that the Court of Appeal in Abuja rejected the request of Onnoghen to stay proceedings in the charge pending against him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

A three-man panel, led by Justice Abdul Aboki, in a ruling, dismissed the application Onnoghen filed to that effect.

The court said, in view of the provision of Section 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), it lacked the power to stay proceedings in criminal cases.

Politics / 'I Don't Give A Damn If APC Loses Zamfara' - Senator Marafa Makes U-turn (WATCH) by itsdumebi(m): 10:00am On Jan 30, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

Kabiru Marafa, the senator representing Zamfara central senatorial district, has said that he doesn't care if his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC loses the elections in the state.

Speaking at a Press Conference in Abuja, Marafa disclosed that some senators and former governor were being used by the Zamfara state government to heighten the crisis rocking the party in the state.

PoliticsNGR gathered that he also complained about President Muhammadu Buhari's lack of concern about the APC not having a governorship candidate in the state in the upcoming Elections.

He said;

“There is a limit to loyalty. My loyalty first and foremost is to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, because we must have Nigeria before we can have the Senate,”.

“So, my loyalty is first to my God and to my people. APC is not a religion. So, if APC decides that the worst APC candidate is better than the best other candidates from anywhere, I will respect them because they are in politics to field candidates to win elections.

“But that cannot be true to me. So, I would go for the best for my people.

“So, even if it means that APC loses in Zamfara State, I don’t give a damn. After all, the crisis that we are in today started with the APC itself.”

Politics / BREAKING: PDP Suspends 2019 Presidential Campaign Over CJN Suspension by itsdumebi(m): 3:21am On Jan 26, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

PoliticsNGR has just gathered that the Peoples Democratic Party has suspended its 2019 presidential campaign over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

In a statement signed by the chairman of the party and co-chairman of the Presidential Campaign Council, Uche Secondus, made available to this Newspaper early Saturday Morning, the Presidential Campaign has been suspended in protest of the suspension.

The Statement read;

"Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council has suspended its presidential campaign in protest of President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

The PDP Campaign Council further predicated the suspension of its campaign activities in solidarity with Nigerians in our collective rejection of the assault against our democratic order.

Describing President Buhari action as a “dangerous and brazen assault on the constitution”, the PDP Campaign Council says in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday night that there is no point in campaigning to contest in an election, whose very basis has been so flagrantly undermined.

“The basis for this election is the democracy itself. When democracy comes under this kind of virulent attack, then the election itself becomes superfluous,” the statement said.

The PDP Presidential Campaign was scheduled to be in Benue State on Saturday. But it now said it is suspending its campaign activities for a period of 72 hours in the first instance.

“In the first instance, we are suspending our campaign for 72 hours. It is our hope that President Buhari will listen to the voice of all lovers of democracy the world over and restore democracy in Nigeria immediately and without qualifications. At the moment, the President has effectively suspended the constitution under whose basis the elections are being contested.

The action of President Buhari represents a constitutional breach and a direct attack on our democracy. This must never be allowed to stand, as there is no way by which democracy can survive under these autocratic tendencies.

We call on all well meaning Nigerians to rise in defence of democracy and save our nation from this imminent slide into tyranny."

Politics / Ijaw Youth Council Condemns Suspension Of CJN Onnoghen by itsdumebi(m): 9:48pm On Jan 25, 2019
@POLITICSNGR
Below is a statement made available to PoliticsNGR by the National President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Pereotubo Roland Oweilaemi;

"The suspension of the Chief Justice of the Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen is an abuse of office taken too far. President Buhari has suspended the Constitution thereby applying fascist rule. He has no power whatsoever under our democracy to unilaterally suspend CJN without the impute of the National Assembly, especially the Senate.

The Constitution under section 292 is very clear on the procedure to remove a judge, especially CJN or CJ. This unconstitutional act of Mr. President has demonstrated that the government is pursuing an illicit agenda against the judiciary. This is a dictatorship in the highest order. It means even the Nigerian Constitution has been suspended.

Nigerians need to rise up in unionism to defend our democracy. Buhari's onslaught against democracy must be resisted by men of goodwill. No doubt that Buhari has let loose full blown dictatorship where hard and fast rules have been introduced in place of our Constitution.

As for us in the Niger Delta, this is a direct assault on our collective aspirations to live in a united Nigeria. We shall resist this discriminatory action of the present government even with the last drop of our blood. Nigeria belongs to all of us therefore, we will no longer allow ourselves to be treated as second fiddle human beings.

Mr. President should review his action in the best in interest of our corporate existence and revise the illegal suspension of the CJN with immediate effect. If Niger Delta man is not good enough to occupy top national office under Buhari then we may not guarantee peace in the oil sector.

IYC is calling on the international community to prevail on the Buhari-led government to back down on some of his divisive, discriminatory and unconstitutional actions before he sets the Country on fire. Nigeria is moving to the cliff. The end of democracy is in sight if urgent action is not taken to stop Buhari from destroying our hard earned democracy. After all, he is benefiting from his wrong and so he didn't value the importance of democracy to Nigerians.

Politics / Saraki Reacts To CJN Onnoghen Suspension, Reveals Next Line Of Action by itsdumebi(m): 9:18pm On Jan 25, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has described the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Walter Onoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari, as a coup against democracy and a deliberate attempt to endanger our hard-won democracy.

PoliticsNGR gathered that Saraki, in a statement personally signed by him stated that the suspension was another act of desperation by President Buhari. He noted that by the suspension of the CJN, Buhari has acted outside the provision of the constitution, has exercised the powers which he does not have and that this action amounted to gross misconduct.

“This is an action aimed at undermtining the nation’s judiciary, subverting the constitution, intimidating judges of all the courts of record, and creating uncertainty in the electoral process, thereby laying the foundation for influencing the outcome of litigations that might arise from next month’s elections.

“There are already the general belief that this hasty action was taken to pre-empt the already scheduled inauguration of election petition tribunals by Hon. Justice Onoghen and to destroy national institutions that are perceived to be unco-operative in his bid to manipulate the electoral process leading to next month’s general elections.

“By unilaterally suspending the CJN without following the provision of the constitution, President Buhari has taken an action which amounted to gross misconduct. He has simply sent a dangerous signal to the entire world that Nigeria is no longer a democratic nation and that we have returned to the old, jaded era of military dictatorship .

“Our constitution makes no provision for suspension of the nation’s highest judicial officer. The constitution provides a clear process for removal of the CJN and specify the roles of the three arms of government, beginning from the National Judicial Council (NJC), the National Assembly and lastly, the Presidency, have different roles to play in that process. There is no condition under which the President can usurp the powers of other arms of government. I do not know where the President and his advisers got this idea of suspending the CJN on the so-called order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal but this is novel, disingenuous and alien to our laws.

“The President and his team must have seen this so-called suspension as a short-cut to getting Hon. Justice Onnoghen out of the way since the appellate court has eventually stopped the CCT from continuing with the trial of the CJN. It is strange that President Buhari is claiming to be taking orders from a Tribunal which has been ordered by a superior court to halt all actions on the trial.

“With this action, President Buhari has initiated a process the consequence of which nobody can predict. They have precipitated a constitutional crisis.

“At this point, all democratic institutions in the country, the international community and democrats across the world should rise against this blatant act of impunity. We should jointly condemn this retrogressive, uncivilized and despotic measure”, Saraki stated.

He however called on President Buhari to immediately reverse this decision and allow the due process of law to take its natural course in determining the guilt or otherwise as well as the suitability of Hon. Justice Onnoghen to continue as the head of the nation’s judiciary.

Politics / Buhari Speaks On Suspension Of CJN Onnoghen (Full Statement) by itsdumebi(m): 6:37pm On Jan 25, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

Below is a full transcript of President Muhammadu Buhari's speech on the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Nkanu Onnoghen.

"Fellow Nigerians,

A short while ago, I was served with an Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal issued on Wednesday 23rd January 2019, directing the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Walter Nkanu Samuel Onnoghen from office pending final determination of the cases against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and several other fora relating to his alleged breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

2. The nation has been gripped by the tragic realities of no less a personality than the Chief Justice of Nigeria himself becoming the accused person in a corruption trial since details of the petition against him by a Civil Society Organization first became public about a fortnight ago.

3. Although the allegations in the petition are grievous enough in themselves, the security agencies have since then traced other suspicious transactions running into millions of dollars to the CJN’s personal accounts, all undeclared or improperly declared as required by law.

4. Perhaps more worrisome is the Chief Justice of Nigeria’s own written admission to the charges that he indeed failed to follow the spirit and letter of the law in declaring his assets, citing ’’mistake’’ and ’’forgetfulness’’ which are totally unknown to our laws as defences in the circumstances of his case.

5. One expected that with his moral authority so wounded, by these serious charges of corruption, more so by his own written admission, Mr. Justice Walter Onnoghen would have acted swiftly to spare our Judicial Arm further disrepute by removing himself from superintending over it while his trial lasted.

6. Unfortunately, he has not done so. Instead, the nation has been treated to the sordid spectacle of a judicial game of wits in which the Chief Justice of Nigeria and his legal team have made nonsense of the efforts of the Code of Conduct Tribunal to hear the allegation on merit and conclude the trial as quickly as possible considering the nature of the times in which we live.

7. Whether deliberately or inadvertently, we have all seen the full weight of the Chief Justice of Nigeria descend on the tender head of one of the organs of justice under his control. There is simply no way the officers of that court, from the Chairman to the bailiffs, can pretend to be unaffected by the influence of the leader of the Judiciary.

8. Not only the trial court, but others have been put on the spot. Practically every other day since his trial commenced, the nation has witnessed various courts granting orders and counter-orders in favour of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, all of them characterised by an unholy alacrity between the time of filing, hearing and delivery of judgment in same.

9. The real effect has been a stalling of the trial of Justice Onnoghen, helped along by lawyers who insist that these orders, whether right or wrong are technically valid, and must be obeyed till an appellate Court says otherwise. No doubt, that it is the proper interpretation, but is it the right disposition for our nation?

10. Nigeria is a constitutional democracy and no one must be, or be seen to be, above the law. Unfortunately, the drama around the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria has challenged that pillar of justice in the perception of the ordinary man on the street. For it is certain that no ordinary Nigerian can get the swift and special treatment Justice Onnoghen has enjoyed from his subordinates and privies in our Judicature.

11. In the midst of all these distracting events, the essential question of whether the accused CJN actually has a case to answer has been lost in the squabble over the form and nature of his trial. This should not be so.

12. If Justice cannot be done and clearly seen to be done, society itself is at risk of the most unimaginable chaos. As a Government, we cannot stand by wailing and wringing our hands helplessly but give our full backing and support to those brave elements within the Judiciary who act forthrightly, irrespective of who is involved.

13. As you are all aware, the fight against corruption is one of the tripod of policies promised to Nigerians by this administration. Needless to say that it is an existential Policy which must be given adequate attention and commitment by all the three arms of government. The efforts of the Executive will amount to nothing without the cooperation of the Legislature and especially the Judiciary.

14. It is no secret that this government is dissatisfied with the alarming rate in which the Supreme Court of Nigeria under the oversight of Justice Walter Onnoghen has serially set free, persons accused of the most dire acts of corruption, often on mere technicalities, and after quite a number of them have been convicted by the trial and appellate courts.

15. Since there is nothing the Executive Arm can do after the apex court of the land has spoken on any matter, several of these individuals walk free among us today, enjoying what are clearly the proceeds of the corruption which for so long has defeated the efforts of this nation to develop and prosper.

16. It is against this background that I have received the Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal directing me to suspend the Chief Justice pending final determination of the cases against him. It also explains why I am not only complying immediately, but with some degree of relief for the battered sensibilities of ordinary Nigerians whose patience must have become severely over-taxed by these anomalies.

17. In line with this administration’s avowed respect for the Rule of Law, I have wholeheartedly obeyed the Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal dated 23rd January 2019.

18. Accordingly, I hereby suspend the Honourable Mr. Justice Walter Nkanu Samuel Onnoghen, GCON as the Chief Justice of Nigeria pending final determination of the case against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

19. In further compliance with the same Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, I hereby invite Honourable Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed JSC, being the next most Senior Justice in the Supreme Court, to come forward to take the Judicial Oath as Chief Justice of Nigeria in an Acting Capacity.

20. Fellow Nigerians, we can only stand a chance to win the fight against Corruption, and position our dear nation for accelerated development when we stand together to contend against it.

Thank you and may God bless our country.

Politics / Hope Uzodinma Reacts To Expulsion From APC, Attacks Okorocha by itsdumebi(m): 4:21pm On Jan 24, 2019
@POLITICSNGR

Gubernatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Imo state, Senator Hope Uzodinma has reacted to his expulsion from the Imo state chapter of the party.

Below is a statement made available to PoliticsNGR by his spokesman, Hussaini Bukar;

"The purported suspension of the APC governorship candidate is an exercise in futility and therefore void and of no effect whatsoever. There is only one APC in Imo State under the chairmanship of Prince Marcellus Nlemeigbo.

"That is the party known at the headquarters in Abuja. There's no APC faction in Imo State. So you cannot act from a void."

"Okorocha and his infantile boys brigade can deluded themselves to high havens but they cannot change the facts They are not members of APC and therefore, as far as APC is concerned, cannot act from a void because they don't belong to APC. So the so called suspension or whatever of anybody by the Okorocha gang is of no effect because it's void and none existent."

Politics / Obasanjo's Attack On Buhari Is Undignified - Senator Adamu by itsdumebi(m): 5:59pm On Dec 12, 2018
@POLITICSNGR

Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, has expressed concern over the manner former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticised President Muhammadu Buhari.

Adamu, who stated this while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, said Obasanjo’s criticisms of Buhari was not dignifying.

He was reacting to a recent report credited to the former president, where he said he was not neutral regarding his support for a specific presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections.

Adamu said: “while he is entitled to criticise and also campaign against the re-election bid of Buhari, he should not be pedestrian in doing that.

“What was Obasanjo’s record in office when he ran this country first from Feb. 1976 to Oct. 1979, and subsequently from May 1999 to May 2007.

“Would there have been the desperate and notoriously corrupt bid for a third term in office that was witnessed by Nigerians if he had a good record by then,” adamu said.

According to the lawmaker, under Obasanjo’s watch, most of Nigeria’s strategic investments were sold without much to show as returns to the nation.

“No Nigerian of repute who knows Obasanjo’s antecedents will be surprised at his current criticism of Buhari.

“He is going off the line of fair comment in this circumstance, and I believe eminent citizens of this country need to call him to order,” the lawmaker said.

Politics / Senate Passes South-East Development Commission Bill by itsdumebi(m): 4:26pm On Dec 12, 2018
@POLITICSNGR

The Senate at plenary on Wednesday, passed the South East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill 2018.

PoliticsNGR learned that the proposed commission aims at enhancing the infrastructural development of the South East zone, which is grappling with huge ecological challenges.

The bill also seeks to act as a catalyst for the development of the commercial potentials of the zone.

The proposed legislation requires the concurrence of the House of Representatives to become a bill of the National Assembly, and the president’s assent to become a Law.

Sponsored by two southeast senators, Stella Oduah (PDP-Anambra) and Samuel Anyanwu (PDP-Imo), the bill was first read in the Senate on June 22, 2016.

Its passage in the Red Chamber followed the presentation of the report of the Committee on Establishment and Public Service by its former Chairman, Sen. Emmanuel Paulker (PDP-Bayelsa).

After Paulker’s presentation, the bill was considered clause by clause by the committee of the whole, and amendments made by the lawmakers before it was read for the third time and eventually passed.

Speaking, the Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, who presided at the sitting, commended his colleagues for a job well done.

“Every morning we pray that God should give us the grace to do only those things that will promote the peace and unity of this country.

“I believe that we have shown today that we are committed to the unity of this country, and it is this unity that will give us faith in this country.

“This faith will in turn help us to pursue peace and progress,” he said.

Addressing newsmen after plenary, members of the South East caucus of the Senate, led by Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia), thanked their colleagues and members of the committee for their efforts.

Abaribe, who spoke on behalf of the caucus, urged the President to sign the bill into law “as soon as we tidy it up and bring to him, in the interest of the unity and progress of Nigeria”.

“This will put to rest the long-drawn agitation in the South East, and the difficulties in the rehabilitation and reconciliation efforts that started at the end of the civil war.

“All things we see always will end up at the negotiating table, which is what we have done,” he said.
The lawmaker said he hoped the House of Representatives would give concurrence to the bill as it went in the Senate.

When established, the South East Development Commission would be the third zonal interventionist body in the country.

Currently, there is the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North East Development Commission established recently.

@POLITICSNGR

Five persons standing trial for conspiracy to rob Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa in his hometown are to remain in custody  until Jan. 31, 2019, PoliticsNGR has learned.

The development followed adjournment of the trial by Justice E.T Okara, after cross examination of a prosecution witness,  Insp. Ekpang Columba, by defence counsel, Messrs Julius Eyokoragha and Stanley Damabide.

The accused  have been in prison since their  arrest in May.

They are facing trial before a Sagbamam High Court sitting in Yenagoa in Charge No. SHC/9C/20188.

The accused, including Esther Engbeke, Tamnatony Jacob, Wodu Ebikebomu and Sinclair, were charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery at Dickson’s residence contrary to Robbery and Firearms Act of 2004.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The accused had told the court that they merely contemplated whistle blowing to disclose a location in Dickson’s hometown, Toru Orua in Sagbama LGA, where money was stashed.

Columba, also the Investigating Police Officer, testified  during the cross examination that no weapon was found on the accused  when they were arrested.

He said, “No weapon was recovered from the offenders; they were making plans to get weapons but no weapon was recovered from them.”

The judge  adjourned for cross-examination of other prosecution witnesses.

According to the prosecution, one of the accused, a construction worker at Dickson’s residence, had discovered a room stuffed with cash.
