A former Rivers State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Gesila Khan Okubama, was on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, at a Federal High Court, sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State over a N185.8 million scam. The Commissioner, together with one other official, Peter Popnen, was arraigned before Justice Salihu Saidu on a five-count charge bordering on gratification and money laundering to the tune of N185, 842,000k( One Hundred and Eighty Five Million, Eight Hundred and Forty-Two Thousand Naira only). Specifically, the two former INEC officials got into trouble, for allegedly collecting the sum of N185, 842,000k in the weeks preceding the 2015 Presidential election as a bribe. They are among the over 100 INEC Officials that allegedly collected part of the $115million (N23bn), disbursed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison- Madueke, during the countdown to the 2015 presidential election. Count one of the charge read: “That you Gesila Khan Okubama, Peter Popnen, Diezani Alison Madueke (Still at large) and others now at large on or about the 27th day March, 2015 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did conspire among yourselves to directly take possession of the sum of N 185,842,000.00 (One Hundred and Eighty Five Million, Eight Hundred and Forty Two Thousand Naira only ) cash which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: gratification and money laundering and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2012 as amended and punishable under Section 15 (3) of the same Act”. Count two of the charge read: “That you Gesila Khan Okubama on or about the 13th April, 2016 at Economic and Financial Crime Commission, 6A Olumeni Street, Old G.R.A Off Forces Avenue Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court knowingly failed to make full disclosure of your assets and\or interest in two blocks of two-story buildings of an office complex\shopping plaza situate at Utome-Bosh, Okutukutu\Etegwe community, Yenegoa Bayelsa State in the Asset Declaration Form you filled at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 13\4\2016 and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 27 (1) (3)(a) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Establishment Act 2004 and punishable under Section 27 (3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Establishment Act 2004”. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them. In view of their pleas, prosecution counsel, O. Oyediran, asked the court for a trial date and pleaded that the defendants be remanded in prison custody. However, counsel to the 1st defendant, S. Larry, SAN, told the court that he had filed a bail application for his client. He said the alleged offences were bailable and that the defendant had earlier been placed on administrative bail by the prosecution and urged the court to grant his prayers. Oyediran, however, opposed his prayers. He said the application was served on him yesterday and he needed time to respond. Counsel to the 2nd defendant, Maol Dumle did same prayers. Oyediran acknowledged his application and told the court that he has also responded to it. In his ruling, Justice Saidu turned down the 1st defendant’s application for bail and ordered that she should be remanded in EFCC’s custody pending the determination of her bail. He, however, granted the 2nd defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000.000, 00k (One Hundred Million Naira only) and two sureties in like sum. Prominent lawyer, Femi Falana has written a letter to the acting president of Nigeria, Mr. Yemi Osinbajo calling for the release of detained IMN leader, Ibrahim Elzakzaky, his wife, Zainab and Former National security adviser(NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki. Falana also urged Osinbajo to “direct the Nigerian Army to investigate and prosecute the military personnel responsible for the brutal and callous massacre of the 347 members of the Shia Community at Zaria in December 2015.” In the letter dated June 2, 2017, Falana told Osinbajo that apart from the DSS flouting the court order, El-Zakzaky had lost his right eye and could lose the second owing to lack of medical care in detention. He added that in order to keep the couple incommunicado in custody, the DSS had barred lawyers from seeing them. The human rights lawyer also asked Mr Osinbajo to sanction 'overzealous' public officers. The letter read; "Since we have a responsibility ‘to resist all who might seek to sow confusion and hatred for their own selfish interests’ we urge Your Excellency to sanction the overzealous public officers who have publicly denigrated the rule of law by saying that the valid and subsisting orders of competent courts for the release of Sheik El-Zakzaky and his wife would not be obeyed by the federal government." "Notwithstanding the commitment of the federal government to operate under the rule of law the same individuals have continued to give the dangerous impression that the federal government would not comply with the orders of the federal high court, the high court of the federal capital territory and the community court of justice to the effect that Col Sambo Dasuki (retd) be admitted to bail. "In view of the resolve of the Muhammadu Buhari administration to end impunity in the country we urge Your Excellency to use your good offices to direct the State Security Service to release Sheik Elzakzaky and his wife from further incarceration in compliance with the orders of the federal high court. At the same time, Col Dasuki (retd) should be admitted to bail as ordered by the municipal and regional courts." http://politicsngr.com/2017/06/04/release-elzakzaky-dasuki-falana-fires-osinbajo/ cc : lalasticlala

Consequent to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State’s inspection of facilities and work progress on the Fertilizer Blending Plant in Auchi area of Etsako West Local Government of the state on Thursday, it has emerged that the plant will become functional before the end of June, this year. The governor gave this assurance after receiving reports from Mr Ayodele Ejaoye, the General Manager of the Technical Company managing the fertiliser plant, who also said that the blending plant could produce about 55.000 metric tonnes of fertiliser per year. He noted that with the progress of work and the facilities on ground, the plant could be test run by June 10, after which full production would begin, adding that the plant would employ about 120 direct and indirect workers when it became operational. “I am quite impressed with the progress of work here because if you compared the situation now to what we met about two and half months ago when we came here first, you’d find that there is a significant difference,” the governor said. Continuing, he revealed that: “We have been able to get the technical partners under the federal government fertiliser programme to start work here and they have made an investment to revamp the plant. The equipment has been tested and manufacturers were brought to fix the faulty parts. They are also constructing a new line to meet up with the specification of the federal government fertiliser programme.” In addition, Governor Obaseki revealed that security had been beefed up in the location while office complexes had been fixed to ensure proper take-off of the facility. Meanwhile, plans were in the works, it also emerged, with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), to draw a dedicated 33KVA line to the plant, a standby 500KVA generating set had been refurbished and more plans were being made with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to increase power supply to the blending plant and other mining facilities in the locality. Justice Mary Abounu, wife of the Benue state deputy governor, Engineer Benson Abounu, reportedly slapped her former police orderly, Inspector Jane Agbo, over an accusation that she was having a secret sexual relationship with her husband. According to Nigerian Concord, This incident occurred at the Benue deputy governor’s Lodge earlier this month. The development made the Nigerian Police Command in the state to redeploy the officer back to the Otukpo Divisional Police Station. According to an investigation, Mrs Abounu accused her police orderly, Inspector Jane Agbo who started working with her as an Orderly since when she was a court judge, of sleeping with the deputy governor. It was discovered that the Benue second lady had at several times confronted her police orderly, asking her to confess if the rumour she was receiving that she was sleeping with her husband was true or not. However, the report stated that Inspector Jane Agbo who is still a single lady denied the allegation and tried on several occasions to make her madam believe that there was nothing between her and the deputy governor. The straw that finally broke the camel’s back happened two weeks ago when the deputy governor’s wife couldn’t hold her peace. It was gathered that on that fateful day, Mrs Mary Abounu had asked her erstwhile police orderly to wait behind after their schedules for the day. While Inspector Agbo was waiting, Mrs Abounu came to her and threatened to assault her openly if she didn’t confess to the lingering rumour that she was sleeping with her husband secretly. The newspaper learnt that during a heated argument between the two of them, Mrs Abounu slapped Inspector Jane Agbo several times after which she ordered her out of the deputy governor’s Lodge. It was gathered that Mrs Abounu left a serious instruction that Miss Jane shouldn’t be allowed into the lodge again. As she demanded, the security operatives at the deputy governor’s Lodge turned the former police orderly back when she came to resume her duties the following morning. On hearing that, Inspector Jane Agbo returned to the Benue state police headquarters in Makurdi where she was told of her immediate redeployment to the Otukpo Divisional Police Headquarters. Inspector Jane Agbo confirmed the incident via phone. She confirmed her redeployment as a result of the heated argument and assault she got from the deputy governor’s wife two weeks ago. She said it was sad that a woman she had been serving as her police orderly since when she was a high Court judge could be saying all sorts of rubbish about her. Jane stressed further that she wondered why Mrs Abounu could be accusing her of dating her husband, adding that the deputy governor isn’t her type of man. Her words: ” I wonder why this woman (Mrs Abounu) is saying all sorts of rubbish just to tarnish my image. “I have never had any sexual relationship with her husband, and again the man is not even my taste if at all I want to date anyone. “Although I am a single lady and I can take you or anyone to see my boyfriend, and when you see him, you will quickly agree with me that the deputy governor is not my taste” Asked why she didn’t force her way back into the government House as Mrs Abounu’s police orderly, Inspector Agbo said she didn’t because she was tired of working with her erstwhile boss. She added that she had been tolerating Mrs Abounu’s excesses right from the time she was serving as her orderly at the high Court. Jane said she believes the deputy governor’s wife is just telling lies and making false accusations against her over nothing. She said: “It is a greater sin to maliciously lie against someone than to kill him or her. I have handed madam over to God to do the right judgment. “I am glad about my redeployment because I am tired of working with a devilish and wicked person like her. “Let her continue her lies against me but I know at the right time, God will vindicate me. To God who made me, I didn’t have any secret affair with her husband, the deputy governor. In a related development, Deputy Governor Benson Abounu has threatened to make life unbearable for his wife if she fails to send her current Orderly packing and bring Inspector Jane Agbo back. According to Abounu in a heated argument, he had with his wife last weekend, Jane has been a very trusted and reliable police officer over the years. Meanwhile, it was learnt that the deputy governor only wants the former orderly back as a way to prevent her from divulging some of the family and government secrets which she is already aware of. http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/29/benue-deputy-governor-abuonu-accused-infidelity-wife-slaps-orderly/

PDP chieftain, Chief Olabode George has given reasons for his refusal to work with APC national leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Former deputy national chairman of the PDP stated that he will never work with Tinubu because of his "Godfather kind of politics". In an interview with Punch, George said; “I don’t believe in Bola’s (Tinubu) concept of politics. Their concept of operation in the APC is different from the way I was brought up. A tree cannot make a forest. That is the difference between us. Let us collectively take up the mantle, not Godfather kind of politics.” Bode-George also commended the governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode for the great job he was doing in Lagos state. He said, “This young man (Governor Akinwunmi Ambode) is doing a great job in Lagos and I am impressed. I went round recently and passed through Epe while going to Ondo State. I passed through the route several times as a governor of old Ondo State in 1990. “ I was stupefied by what I saw. He is opening up the ancient villages with good road network and the quality of the road is amazing. Within two years, Ambode has outperformed Babatunde Fashola and Tinubu combined, in terms of infrastructural development, maybe because he is from the civil service. He is better than both of them with his achievements. But I can convince our people that when we settle the PDP crisis, we will present somebody who would be hundred times better than Ambode.” http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/28/reasons-can-never-work-tinubu-bode-george/

Senate President Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has called on Muslim faithful and all Nigerians to dedicate the Ramadan period to offer prayers for the full recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari and the prosperity of the country. Saraki in a message personally signed by him said that the Holy Month presents another opportunity for Nigerians to show love to the less privileged, especially those currently living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in some parts of the country. The Senate President’s statement to mark the beginning of this years’ Ramadan reads thus: Assalamu Alaykum, It is a great pleasure and honour to once again felicitate with millions of Nigerian Muslims, and of course Muslims across the world, on the start of the glorious month of Ramadan. Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. As a kid back in the days, Ramadan was synonymous to fasting only. So, I quite naturally looked forward to Iftar and Sahur at home. But as I grew up and learnt more, I have come to the realisation that Ramadan is far much more! Ramadan is a unique symbol of the values that Muslims and people of all faiths share – that is charity, cooperation, compassion and self-restraint. Ramadan is also an occasion for Muslims to strengthen family and community ties and share God’s gifts with those in need. This is why I invite us to reflect on the conditions of our brothers and sisters in IDP camps across the country who, for no fault of their own, are unable to fast in the comfort of their homes like you and I. This heart-breaking conditions, therefore, remind us all of our common humanity and compel us into positive actions that could bring a permanent end to the situations. I like to also use this occasion to pray for the quick recovery of our dear President, President Muhammadu Buhari. My thoughts and prayers are always with him just as I wish for him a complete and restful recovery. My wife, Toyin and I, and our kids are delighted to extend our warmest wishes to our Muslim brothers and sisters in Nigeria and across the world on the start of this holy month. May the glory and blessings of this month shine upon us now and always. Ramadan Mubarak. http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/27/please-pray-buhari-saraki-appeals-nigerians-ramadan-begins/ cc : laslasticlala

Military coup my foot” The MoU will enable Profuturo, a Spanish charity organisation to provide free education for children in Northern Nigeria using ICT. Speaking on the MoU, Shettima said; “This MoU will go a long way in rekindling hope for a better tomorrow in millions of youths in Northern Nigeria, who are aimlessly walking the streets without any focus, 14 million of them was the last count.” “We wholeheartedly welcome this development which will foster inter-communal and inter-faith dialogue and understanding.” http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/27/dont-pay-attention-coup-reports-northern-governors-tell-nigerians/ cc : lalasticlala

A former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi has urged the Nigerian government to shelve its plan to borrow funds from China to build an airport. Obi added that a project of that kind should be funded through the country's capital market. While speaking at the second capital summit titled "The Road to Nigeria's economic recovery" in Lagos, Obi stressed that the government needed to set up regulations that will ensure publicly privatised businesses are listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE. He further stated that the NSE was shallow because of "an absence of structure and needed regulations". He also criticised the government's provision of intervention funds. “Nigeria has been in contraction for five quarters, so we should work quickly to move away from this recession. There is nothing wrong with borrowing when there is a recession, but it must be done reasonably to attract investments and savings. So, borrowing is not bad except when the money is not used judiciously. There were no savings yesterday, that is why we are where we are today. The value of our capital market is just too low, about $30billion and that cannot attract foreign investors. We cannot compare ourselves now to Mexico, Taiwan, Turkey, Indonesia, Singapore etc. whose economies were similar to ours in the 1990s.” He continued; “There is a strong correlation between the development of an economy and its capital market. Apart from other roles, capital market primarily helps to mobilise funds from the surplus economic units and channels them to the deficit ones". http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/26/fg-not-borrow-build-airport-peter-obi/ cc : lalasticlala

Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-rufai has stated that former president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan disbursed the N2 billion ecological funds among PDP states only, ignoring ACN and other party states in the country in 2013. El-rufai made the allegation while speaking to newsmen In Abuja on Thursday, after the National Economic Council meeting (NEC). In his words: “The committee established beyond all doubts that in 2013, the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan gave N2bn to certain states of the federation but excluded other states. The states that got it were all PDP states and states of other parties that were sympathetic to the PDP like Labour Party in Ondo and APGA in Anambra state. 19 states and the FCT did not get the N2bn from the ecological fund. These states are Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Edo, Ekiti, Nassarawa, Niger, Ogun, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Kwara and Lagos. Others are Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Yobe, Zamfara and the federal capital territory" The petite governor further added; “So, essentially what President Goodluck Jonathan did was to take N2bn each from the ecological fund and give to some PDP states.Any PDP state that was not his friend like Kano and Kwara didn’t get it. And all the other opposition party, like ACN state, got nothing… no ANPP state got anything. http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/26/gej-shared-n2-billion-ecological-funds-among-pdp-states-el-rufai/

Nigeria’s Youth and Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung has denied any knowledge of a contract worth N182m said to be awarded by the then Ministry of Youths on 27th Nov 2013. Syndicated newspaper reports credited to the Committee on Public Petitions, House of Representatives stated, that Barrister Dalung risked being arrested because he allegedly refused to appear before the committee after seven invitations were communicated to him. The publication stated that the committee chaired by Rep Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, PDP, Abia also summoned the ministry’s Permanent Secretary and Director of Procurement to appear alongside the Minister to explain their roles over an alleged bribery scam involving a contractor, Solbec Ltd. Barrister Dalung who is currently on medical vacation, however, denied receipt of any summons by the committee as well as the said contract. "I have never been invited by the said NASS committee and never received any invitation from the Committee in respect of the allegations published. "The contract was said to have been transacted between 27th, November 2013 and October 2015 by the then Ministry of Youth Development while I took an oath of office in November 2015. I am not even aware of the said transactions as I don’t even know the contractor involved or even the company. "I did not mandate anybody to collect anything from anybody and so, not in the position to defend it. The whole allegation is coming to me as a surprise because before proceeding on medical vacation, I cannot remember receiving such petition." The Minister, however, challenged the Committee to present proof of summoning and copy of the petition. "There are laid down procedures of doing things and I believe that NASS is conversant with these practices common in democratic societies. As a law abiding citizen, I will never disregard invitation from NASS. If I have genuine reasons for not making it, I will communicate formally. The whole process looks like acting a script which is outside the confines of the law. "The power of arrest of NASS is a shield intended to protect the integrity of the legislature and not a sword to hunt perceived or imaginary enemies. "The threat is too harsh and lacks the flavour of legislative complements because choosing a period of my absence on medical vacation is the worst form of injustice against humanity. However, whenever, I resume from my medical vacation, I will report to the Inspector General of Police or Sergeant at Arms for a journey into detention, but for now, I am responding to my health". Dalung said. The committee chaired by Rep Uzoma Nkem- Abonta, PDP, Abia, however, stated in the syndicated report, that the Minister has been given until May 30, 2017, to defend the allegations levelled against him by the contractor. http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/25/know-nothing-n182-million-contract-sports-minister-dalung/ cc: lalasticlala

It is important to state that there is no frame in the 1:34" video in circulation on various social media platforms that shows anyone being dragged by a police patrol vehicle as insinuated. Preliminary investigations reveal that on Sunday 14.05.2017 at about 9:30 am, the Police at Esigie Division in Benin-City, Edo state received an information regarding congregation of suspected cultists in preparatory to the commissioning of a felony. Based on the information, a police team was dispatched to the scene where two male persons were arrested while others took to their heels. In the process, one of the suspects (one seen in the video) tried to escape by jumping off the back of the open pick-up patrol van but was restrained by the handcuff attaching him to the vehicle. A reinforcement was called and the suspects were eventually taken to the station. In his words; “During the attack, we lost about six soldiers and equipment, some of our soldiers were also wounded. After the unfortunate incident, a joint operation was carried out by 3 and 125 task force brigade of the army.Based on intelligence report available, we learnt there was an attempt by Boko Haram to attack Damboa town and many of the insurgents have infiltrated the IDPs camp in Damboa. We also have an intelligent report that many of those insurgents that participated in the attack on Sabon Gari have infiltrated into the IDPs camp.During the raid on the camp, one of the terrorists, in particular, was identified to have taken part in the Sabon Gari attack" "When we searched him, we found a wallet on him containing the Identity card of one of the soldiers that was killed during the attack. So, in essence, that gave the purpose for further operations that our troops of 125 Brigade and the Civilian JTF rounded up about 126 of the terrorists in the camp.As you all know that peace has started returning to the areas, but we realise that the Boko Haram terrorists were hiding under law abiding citizens to continue to cause havoc." Mop-up Operations will continue in IDP camps Irabor also added that the operation was a continuous exercise. “The operation is a continuous one, even though the arrest had elicited reactions from some NGOs working in the camp, also the IDPs, who viewed what we are doing differently. This was what really happened, though yesterday, there was an incident in Konduga where three suicide bombers detonated their explosives killing themselves and wounded some locals. Also, we had a case where some of our troops on patrol in Dikwa ran into an Improvised Explosive Device, where two soldiers were wounded, but they are getting better in the hospital. In Damasak also, we suspected Boko Haram movement looking for logistics and food, we laid ambush and killed four of them and recovered a Hilux truck, weapons, fish and rice.It will also interest you to note that our Naval component of the operation have been very active in lake Chad.We are currently strengthening out platforms on that axis toward ensuring that we go deeper in our operations to fish out other Boko Haram terrorists in the area.Looking back into our operations in the last 14 months that I took over as the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, much has been achieved,” http://politicsngr.com/2017/05/17/nigerian-army-arrests-126-boko-haram-suspects-borno-idp-camp/ cc : lalasticlala

The Nigerian senate has expressed worry over the non-submission of the 2017 Budget proposals of statutory corporations to the National Assembly.
