PoliticsArmsgate : Justice Okon Abang Adjourns Metuh's Case by itsdumebi(op): 2:12pm On Feb 21, 2017
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja has fixed February 22, 2017 for "hearing without fail" in a money laundering charge brought against Olisa Metuh, former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The decision of the judge was as a result of the "passionate plea" by Tochukwu Onwugbufor, SAN, a defence counsel, who appealed for an adjournment due to absence of lead counsel for the defence, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN.

Ikpeazu had sent a letter to the trial judge notifying him of his inability to attend the sitting as he was "involved in another criminal case at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court".

The said letter was brought to the attention of the court by prosecution counsel, Silvanus Tahir.

Tahir also pointed out that another letter was also sent in by Emeka Etiaba, SAN, who also requested for an adjournment on health grounds.

"I observe that the defence, particularly the first defendant and counsel representing him, are trying to turn these proceedings into a game of musical chairs," Tahir argued.

He further argued that adjournment from the earlier date was at the instance of the defence, and "the defence has exhausted its five days entitlement as stipulated in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015".

Responding Onwugbufor, who acknowledged being in receipt of the letters, disagreed vehemently that the defence was playing games with the case.

"The allegation that we are turning this case into a musical chair is absolutely uncalled for and frivolous," he said, adding that Ikpeazu had to attend to the other case because the FCT High Court had ordered "accelerated hearing". According to him Etiaba was also absent on health grounds as he had a "malingering toothache".

Having listened to the arguments, Justice Abang, stood the case down till 1.30pm to allow Ikpeazu time to be present in court, noting that his letter superseded that of Etiaba, being the lead counsel. The trial judge however noted that the case before it preceded that of the FCT High Court, noting that Ikpeazu ought to have been present in court and sent the letter to the other court giving Metuh's case precedence.

However, by 2.05pm when the court reconvened, Ikpeazu was still not in court. Onwugbufor told the court that he had gone to the FCT High Court, but "Ikpeazu needs to cross examine a star witness at the other court and so is unable to make it here". He thus pleaded passionately for an adjournment.

The prosecution raised no further objections but left it to "the discretion of the court".
In his ruling Justice Abang said: "In view of the passionate plea at the instance of the defence I'm inclined again to exercise my discretion in favour of the defendant and I shall God willing hear the pending applications dated 24 January 2017, and 9 February 2017, on Wednesday, the 22nd day of February 2017 without fail".

Metuh is being prosecuted alongside his company, Destra Investment Limited on a seven-count charge bordering on money laundering. He is accused of allegedly receiving N400million from the Office of the National Security Adviser, under Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).

Politics''I Carry Bible Bullets To Fight APC'' - Fayose Blows As PDP Govs Dump Sheriff by itsdumebi(op): 5:53pm On Feb 20, 2017
Accuses Nigerian police of colluding with the ruling APC

Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state and chairman of the PDP governors forum has chided the APC in comments he made at the party's meeting on monday in Abuja.

Fayose along with all PDP governors, lawmakers and stakeholders met at the Ekiti state governor's lodge in Asokoro, Abuja to debate on the next line of action following last Friday's appeal court judgment that recognized Ali Modu sheriff as the party's chairman.

Fayose urged PDP members seated at the meeting not to be afraid of the APC, adding that the party's leaders should make more statements to the press than speaking only during party meetings. He also stated that he arms himself with bible bullets every morning after he wakes up from sleep.

Quoting him;

"Every morning when i wake in my room, i carry enough bible bullets inside my pocket"

The Ekiti frontman also accused the Nigerian police of being biased towards the APC for locking down the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, where the meeting was initially scheduled to hold.

The party's spokesman, Chief Dayo Adeyeye accused the Senator Sheriff and the APC of conniving to destroy the PDP.

In his words;

"Senator Ali Modu Sheriff in collaboration with the All Progressive Congress (APC) led Federal Government has barricaded the ICC, venue of the scheduled Stakeholders Meeting of ‎the entire organs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).Sheriff and his APC collaborators cannot stop the will of the people. Nigerians can now confirm that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is a mole in PDP to destroy the only strong opposition in the country."

Properties15 Year Jail Term For Land Grabbers In Oyo As Ajimobi Signs New Bill by itsdumebi(op): 5:37pm On Feb 19, 2017
15 year jail term plus fine for offenders

Forcible seizure of any landed property across Oyo State or an attempt to do so, otherwise known as land grabbing, has become a criminal offence that attracts a maximum of 15 years imprisonment or a fine of N500,000 or both.

This is one of the provisions of the new Real Properties Protection Law, 2016, which the Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, signed into law, at the Executive Council Chambers, in Ibadan, on Friday.

The law is titled, “A law to protect the rights of property owners and prohibit forceful entry, illegal occupation, violent and fraudulent conducts, in relation to real properties in Oyo State and for purposes connected therewith.”

At the signing ceremony were the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Michael Adeyemo; Commissioner for Lands, Housing, Survey and Urban Development; Mr. Ajiboye Omodewu; and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Seun Abimbola.

The law also prescribes ten years jail term or a fine of N500,000 upon conviction for illegal entry into any construction site “for the purpose of stopping, disturbing or otherwise” demand for any fee or levy in respect of construction activities.

Under the new law, any professional who in the conduct of his duties facilitates a contractual agreement between a land owning family and any other person knowing that such agreement will contravene the provisions of the new law is also liable to imprisonment for three years, a fine of N500,000 or both.

Similarly, anyone that writes whatever is deemed to be a frivolous and unwarranted petition, containing false claims, under the anti-land grabbing law is liable to imprisonment for 10 years on conviction.

Part of the law reads, “Any person who, without lawful authority, uses or threatens violence for the purpose of grabbing any real property for himself or for any other person commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment of 15 years or a fine of N500,000 or both.

“Any person who encroaches on any real property commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for 5 years or a fine not exceeding N500,000.

“Any person who is on any property as an encroacher and having with him any firearm, dangerous or offensive weapons commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for five years.

“Any person who offers for sale any property knowing that he has no lawful title to the property or authority of the owner or sells a property knowing that that he has no lawful title to the property or that the property has been previously sold by him or his privies is liable upon conviction to imprisonment for 5 years.”

At the ceremony, the governor said that the law was meant to protect the rights of property owners and to stop the nefarious activities of land merchants who willfully and violently seize people’s land.

Ajimobi said, “We want to use this opportunity to allay the fears of property owners and investors across Oyo State that it will no longer be business as usual. Where there is no law, there is no offence, but now we have a law in place.

“We will ensure the full implementation of this law. I, therefore, advise those bent on encroaching on other people’s property, most times using violence, threats or imaginary connection with the powers that be to have a rethink.

“I salute our ever-reliable members of the House of Assembly, led by the distinguished speaker, Hon. Michael Adeyemo, for the industry put into this holistic law that is meant to give property owners a new lease of life.”

PoliticsLies Are Affecting Nigeria's Development - Wike by itsdumebi(op): 3:43pm On Feb 19, 2017
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that Nigeria will only experience peace and development when the several lies affecting her functionality are dismantled.
He also called for immediate reforms where states are treated as federating units and not departments of the Federal Government. In his acceptance speech after receiving the award as the Sun Governor of the Year, 2016 in Lagos on Saturday night , Governor Wike said that all efforts must be targeted at inclusive governance, which will cater for all sections of the country.

He said: "There are too many lies in the Nigeria’s structural arrangement we must dismantle, including the over-concentration of absolute power and resources at the centre, in order to guarantee sustainable peace, good governance and development.
"For heaven’s sake, we must come to terms with the fact that States are federating units, not departments of the Federal Government. State Governors are elected by their people, and therefore superior in every respect to appointed officers of the federal government.
"It is a constitutional fiction to refer to Governors as Chief Security Officers. But, even at that, nobody can claim to be more concerned about insecurity in our States than the Governors."
He said despite the challenges posed by the imbalances, he has worked deliberately to support security agencies and improve security in Rivers State.

The governor said: "In Rivers State, our administration treats security as number one priority. We have invested millions of naira to provide support for the security agencies, including patrol vehicles, communication and surveillance equipment, gunboats and other logistics.
"Even as I speak, we have procured six armoured personnel carriers to be delivered to the police force. You must also be aware of the two armoured helicopters partly funded by the previous administration, which we brought into the country and voluntarily offered to the Nigerian Air force to use in providing aerial security surveillance for the State.
"Unfortunately, our commitments and support for the security agencies, especially the Police and the DSS appear fruitless given the prevailing disenchantments over their poor operations and relationship with the government and our people.
"Worse still, the politicization of security agencies and services in Rivers State, which started with the frequent and impulsive replacement of Police and DSS bosses, is becoming entrenched and even taken to irrational levels."
On his award, Governor Wike explained that he will remain committed to the delivery of quality projects and programmes across the state for the good of the people.

He noted that the successes recorded in road infrastructure, health infrastructure, security of lives and , education, empowerment, youth development, urban renewal and agriculture.
He said: "As a government, we refused the temptation to politicise project implementation. It is for this reason that we embarked on the ambitious completion of the projects abandoned by the previous administration provided they have direct bearing on the lives of our people.

"And because we recognized the direct relationship between the quality of infrastructure and the State’s growth potential, we completely insulated road construction from political considerations and ensured that all such contracts are given only to tested and reputable contractors.

" This policy saw the quick return of construction giants like Julius Berger, CCECC, Setraco, Dantata & Sawoe, Reynolds Construction Company, and others.
"It is also instructive to note that our infrastructure revolution is not limited to roads. We appreciate the essence of achieving holistic development of the State, which can be impeded without the simultaneous development of social infrastructure.

"Accordingly, we also rebuilding the schools to improve the quality of education and rehabilitating and re-equipping the general hospitals to enhance healthcare delivery. As I speak, 13 general hospitals are undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation while the Vice President on his recent visit flagged off the construction of senior doctors’ quarters at the State-owned Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital."

Governor Wike added: "Also, we are constructing a world-class pleasure park to enhance tourism development, reconstructing the Bille/Bonny Jetty, completed and commissioned the Okrika Jetty to improve water transportation and providing potable water for some of our communities. In appreciation to God, we are building the Port Harcourt Ecumenical Centre to uplift the spiritual lives of our people.
"Rivers State is now a huge construction site and this is deliberate. In 2016, we spent not less than 60 per cent of our budget on capital projects. In 2017, we have increased it to 70 per cent to enable us deliver on our unmet needs for more social and economic infrastructure."
While thanking the Sun Newspapers for the award, he assured that he will continue to perform in such a way that he will continue to win the award.
The Sun Governor of the Year Award was presented to Governor Wike by the Former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaokwu who lauded the governor for his outstanding performance.
The award ceremony was attended by political and business leaders across the country.

PoliticsYouths Stone Nneoma Okorocha's Convoy In Imo Over Power Supply/Amnesty Funds by itsdumebi(op): 10:32am On Feb 18, 2017
Youths angry over diversion of Amnesty funds

The Chairperson of Southern Governor's Wife Forum, Nneoma Okorocha was on a routine tour of dilapidated school buildings in Ohaji Egbema LGA in her capacity as the Chairman of the Amnesty Committee Constituted by her Husband, Governor Rochas Okorocha when her convoy was attacked by youths on February 10th.

Politics Nigeria learnt that Mrs Okorocha's itinerary met stiff resistance in Awarra part of Ohaji/Egbema when aggrieved youths of the area attacked her convoy. Apart from jeers and boos which greeted her convoy, stones and dangerous items were thrown at the vehicles that led her to the place.

On noticing that it was the convoy of the wife of the Governor who came in company of political leaders in the area, youths started hurling dangerous weapons at them forcing the cars to make a U-turn. The first lady's convoy, sensing danger, sped away quickly before torrents of stones landed at their vehicles. Some unlucky persons who were part of the convoy did not escape unhurt as part of their vehicles were damaged by flying missiles.

Okorocha's wife who was hurt and disappointed by the action of the rampaging youths was said to have expressed dissatisfaction with the APC leadership in the area led by the Deputy Chief of Staff ( Operations) for failure to be fully incharge and control the youths.

A member of the ISOPADEC Board from the Awarra Court Area, (name withheld) was also not lucky, as part of his vehicle was bashed by the rampaging youths who pursued the convoy until it left the community.

Politics Nigeria further discovered that the spontaneous reaction of the youths was based on the non fulfilment of several promises the Okorocha government made to the people since it came into power in 2011. Apart from the absence of electricity after years government assured of power supply, the area lacks other basic amenities like road, pipe borne water, health centres and good schools.

Investigation revealed that the people of Ohaji /Egbema witnessed public power supply before Okorocha came into power in 2011, but his entry to government house brought darkness to the area. The public power supply ISOPADEC paid in the past was stopped by Okorocha forcing PHCN /EEDC to stop power supply. The Governor had kicked against the state paying PHCN bills for a certain area.

More annoying to the people that warranted the violent conduct is the non fulfilment of the promises made to the repentant militants when they surrendered arms under the state government Amnesty Programme sometime last year. The Amnesty programme is under the watch of Nneoma Okorocha as the Chairman and Hon Kingsley Chima Uju, Deputy Chief of Staff from the Area as Vice Chairman.
But the aggressive youths accused the state government of deceit and using the Amnesty programme as a conduit pipe to siphon the 13% Oil derivation money paid into ISOPADEC account.

The aggressive youths further accused the state government of not instituting any measure to not only rehabilitate the repentant militants but also rehabilitate them after surrendering arms.
It would be recalled that at a celebrated occasion, armed youths and cultists surrendered their arms to embrace Amnesty Programme of the State government. Eight months after, nothing has come out of it fuelling speculations that the repentant militants have been tricked in the process.

Worried by the development, the government announced that it has paid N200 million to PHCN for reconnection of the area with power supply and another N20 million to rehabilitate the Ex- militants.

PoliticsParis Loan : EFCC Denies Indicting Any Governor, exonerates Saraki by itsdumebi(op): 11:39am On Feb 13, 2017
Commission discredits reports

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to a report captioned, Nigerian State Governors, Senate President Saraki pocketed billions of Naira from Paris Loan Refund, which appeared in the online news portal, Sahara Reporters on Sunday February 12, 2017.

The report among others claimed that the Commission has indicted all the governors of the 36 states of the Federation and the Senate President, Bukola Saraki in the ongoing investigation of the reimbursement paid to state governments by the Federal Government for excessive deduction charged to them on account of the Paris Club and other international loans.

The Commission wishes to state unequivocally, that no state governor or Senate President has been indicted so far by the investigation which is still at a preliminary stage. Also, insinuations about cover up by some officials of the Commission are untrue as there is no incentive to do so.
The Commission implores the Media to be circumspect in the reportage of this delicate issue in order not to jeopardize ongoing investigation, and be assured that they would be fully briefed of developments as soon as breakthrough is achieved.

PoliticsPhotos:''fight Recession With Agriculture''- Femi Gbajabiamila, Chews Stockfish by itsdumebi(op): 4:39pm On Feb 11, 2017
Reps leader chews stock-fish as he urges Nigerians to invest in agriculture

The Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has charged Nigerians to embrace agriculture as alternative way to cushion effects of the current economic recession. He gave this hint at a fish farming empowerment programme he organized for people of Surulere 1 Federal Constituency, Lagos over the weekend.

The first phase of the agricultural empowerment programme had 100 beneficiaries selected from the Community Development Areas in the constituency.

"the way to go is now agriculture not oil anymore. When we were growing up one of the richest men. His name is Ibru, I use to think Ibru is name of a fish not knowing it was name of a man that made money from fish. So you will make money if you make good use of these equipment. So please don't sell these equipment so you can feed many people." , Gbajabiamila said.

"this is a special empowerment because every time people come to me saying I don't want you to give me fish I want you to teach me how to catch fish, after consultation I came up with this initiative and today each beneficiary is going home with equipment for fish sorting, grading, drying and cool storage worth N250,000."

The House Leader while appraising the empowerment programme told his constituents that government's effort to pull the country out of recession is real.

"You can have the fish pond within your compound and I will give you 2 million Naira to buy your first feed for your fishes and you are gradually in a small way getting out of recession."

In his speech the Executive Director of Nigeria Stored Products Research Institute, Prof. Olufemi Peters spoke on the training offered to the beneficiaries and need to explore the nation's local technology in making lives better for citizens.

"we partnered with the House Leader because our research institute has experts in fish farming who can turn freshers to fish handlers . In the first phase we have trained 100 beneficiaries in aquaculture, fish cleaning, sorting, glutting, deboning, drying and smoking."

Also speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Esther Diamond was full of appreciation to the House Leader for the laudable initiative.

"we really appreciate you and only God will appreciate more because you don't know what you have really done, you have made us our own boss.", she said

PoliticsElrufai Angry Over Destruction Of Army Structure In Southern Kaduna by itsdumebi(op): 3:22pm On Feb 11, 2017
The Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai on Saturday 11th of February 2017, frowned at the destruction of the foundation laying structure of the proposed Nigerian Army Battalion in Southern Kaduna.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai and Governor El-Rufai had last week laid the foundation for the establishment of the battalion at Ungwan Yashi area of Zangon Kataf Local Government as a response to the incessant killings occurring in Southern Kaduna since 1980.

El-Rufai in a response to the destruction by unknown persons described the situation as "unfortunate, and further confirms that the conflict entrepreneurs are determined to continue to create obstacles and setback to our stabilization and peace building efforts."

The Governor in a statement was quoted as saying:

“I received the news with shock over the unfortunate destruction of foundation laying structure of the proposed Nigerian Army battalion in Southern Kaduna. The very structure we erected to establish the long-awaited Army Barracks to assist promotion of peace and end the decades of senseless bloodletting in the southern part of Kaduna State.

“The situation is unfortunate, condemnable and a setback to the government's communal stabilization and peace building efforts, but we will not be deterred. We urge our people that cherish peaceful coexistence to continue to be resilient, focused and resolute in overcoming antics of forces of darkness and evil. Those that did this are determined to derail the contributions of the security agencies, having failed to spread their tentacles of hate, bigotry and penchant for divisiveness.

“I want to use this medium to appeal to all men and women of conscience to remain firm and optimistic, while government in collaboration with security agencies, civil society, religious and traditional institutions will continue to work assiduously for peace and security of life and property.

“Finally, all those that have their hands in the destruction of this structure will not go free. The security agencies will fish out the perpetrators, and those found to be involved, or engaged in omissions that led to the destruction of public property will be brought to justice without fear or favour.”

Below is a statement from the Kogi state government made available to Politics Nigeria;

Security reports have revealed the existence of a microscopic Boko Haram cell in the central part of the State who escaped and made their way into Kogi State as our gallant soldiers in the North-East clamped down on and have them annihilated.

Needless to say, the Kogi State government under His Excellency has been proactive on security as all security agencies in the State have been well equipped to tackle armed robbery and kidnapping in the State.

This terrorist cell depend on proceeds they make from kidnapping to finance their activities. But unfortunately for them, their kidnapping activities have been hampered and greatly reduced by the police and other security forces in the central part of the State.

By and large, the attack by this terrorist cell on Eika Police Station in Okehi where two policemen and a community leader were killed is a fight back on the police force who have hampered their operations and means of making money through kidnapping to finance their terrorist activities.

His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello described the incident as unfortunate and vowed to do everything possible to quash the menace of terrorism in the central and any other part of the State.
