Popular Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana has expressed disagreement with the Federal government's claims that the root cause of Nigeria's under-development is corruption. Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria, stated that every capitalist society in the world was built upon exploitation, corruption and fraud, adding that this was the reason developed countries in Europe and America were more corrupt than African countries. Speaking to Punch, Falana said; "With respect, I totally disagree with such reductionist conclusion that say corruption is the root cause of the nation’s under-development.To the best of my knowledge, every capitalist society is built on corruption, fraud and exploitation. Western countries are much more corrupt than African countries. Hence, all the funds looted from the treasuries of other nations are kept in the vaults of the banks in the West. But out of sheer hypocrisy, the leaders and the media in western countries say that we are corrupt and our rulers swallow (that) hook, line and sinker. For two and half years, President Buhari has been begging the West to repatriate our stolen wealth. In spite of promises (made by the West), not a single dime has been recovered and repatriated. Chapter 2 of the constitution on socioeconomic rights did not have a capitalist society in mind. Hence, a duty has been imposed on the government to abolish corrupt practices and control the means of production and exchange. If social services are funded by the government and the people are empowered to manage their own affairs there will be little or nothing left to steal. That is why a socialist system is less corrupt as the entire wealth of the nation goes for servicing the people. But if you go around saying that government cannot fund education, build hospitals, tar roads, construct railways, etc., you are inviting the plutocrats in government to engage in the criminal diversion of public funds. No doubt, President Buhari is committed to the anti-corruption crusade than his predecessors. Through the introduction of the TSA (Single Treasury Account) the Federal Government has saved huge funds. Through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, trillions of naira have been recovered. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences and the Code of Conduct Bureau are being re-organised even though rather belatedly. Owing to the failure of the National Assembly to pass the bill for the establishment of a special court to determine corruption cases, the Chief Justice, the Honourable Justice Walter Onnoghen, has directed all heads of courts to create special courts to hear corruption cases. This will go a long way to ensure that pending corruption cases are speedily determined. Although these initiatives are coming rather late in the day, they are going to assist the administration to deliver on the promise to expose and indict a number of corrupt elements in the society. But mind you, no government can successfully fight corruption without involving the people who are the victims of corruption. To that extent, the celebration of criminality by the media has to stop. Religious, traditional and educational institutions have to stop honouring men and women of questionable pedigree. The staff and student unions in the campuses have to monitor funds allocated for the development of our institutions. The labour unions have to monitor the federal, state and local governments with a view to blocking leakages and exposing corrupt officials." http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/24/corruption-not-nigerias-problem-falana-tells-fg/ cc: lalasticlala, mynd44

The General Overseer of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission(TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo has criticized president Muhammadu Buhari for his use of military force in the South-East over the activities of the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous people of Biafra(IPOB) group. PoliticsNGR learned that Okonkwo also attacked the president over the recent construction of a railway to his hometown in Daura, asking 'What was the Economic benefit?'. Speaking to Vanguard, He said; "We should not use violence to resolve our differences. Agitations like the one we have in the South-East will come but the solution is not moving armoured tanks there. Like I said, these are not the days you use force or instruments of government to intimidate people because there are those who are willing to die. We should go to the negotiation table to resolve naughty issues. Take for instance recent appointments in the NNPC, why will people not agitate? This is one of the issues that make people agitate. You can’t give 10 slots to the North, three to the South-West, two to the South-South and nothing to the East and you want them to sleep. And you want Nnamdi Kalu not to talk again. At times, I ask myself: who are the people giving advice to government? Why are they giving such advice? I just heard of a rail project being built from Kano to Daura. What is the economic benefit of that project? We can understand the one from Kaduna to Abuja…because people who live in Kaduna can commute to Abuja daily to work. But in this case, show me the economic benefit of spending such billions to develop a rail from Kano to Daura? The states that generate these funds, we don’t have roads that connect them, how much more airport. The Asaba airport was built by the state government, not the Federal Government. The states that generate the funds do not have airports, no roads and you want them not to agitate? What’s really wrong? Is somebody playing games with people’s minds? Such things are not acceptable." http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/24/bishop-okonkwo-blasts-buhari-use-military-force-south-east/

The ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) has denied reports that the former factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff met with the APC national Chairman in Aso-rock on Thursday. The national publicity secretary of the party, Mr Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Friday revealed that Oyegun has not met with Sheriff in two years. The statement read; "Following Thursday’s visit of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun to the Aso Rock Villa, the attention of the Party has been drawn to surprising speculations in some sections of the media on the visit. For the records, the APC National Chairman only met with the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari. He was not aware neither was he part of the reported meeting between the Vice President, H.E. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN and a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff. The APC National Chairman did not visit the vice president on the day in question and has equally not met Senator Ali Modu Sheriff in over two years." He added: "Linking the APC National Chairman’s visit to the Aso Rock Villa to media reports of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff’s plans to join the APC is an effort to cause confusion and disaffection in the Party in Borno State. It should be noted that the membership of the APC is negotiated at the ward level of intending entrants, irrespective of status. The Party hereby calls on its members, stakeholders and indeed the general public to disregard the speculative report". http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/22/not-meet-ali-modu-sheriff-apc-chairman-john-odigie-oyegun/ cc: lalasticlala, mynd44

The Nigerian supreme council for Islamic Affairs(NSCIA) has stated that the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) has shown itself to 'Islamophobic'. Reacting to an earlier statement by CAN alleging that the issuance of Suku bond by the Federal government was part of a plan to Islamize Nigeria, Salisu Shehu, the deputy secretary-general of the NSCIA, on Friday, issued a statement saying that CAN was intolerant of Islam. The statement made available to PoliticsNGR read; "CAN cannot claim ignorance about the fact that even the World Bank has been involved in issuing Sukuk and the floating of Sukuk bonds. Interestingly also, several non-Muslim countries across Africa, Europe and Asia have also instituted Islamic Financial System generally and Sukuk in particular. Worthy of mention here are Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Russia, China, Singapore and a number of firms in the United States. Less than two years ago, Britain hosted a world conference on Islamic Banking and Finance and David Cameron, the then British prime minister, openly declared that their intention was to make UK the hub of Islamic Finance in the World. It would certainly be embarrassing for CAN to be told that the first and foremost state in Nigeria to submit application for loan to the Islamic Development Bank is a Christian-dominated state in the south-east. This has been the factor that made Muslims to tolerate several practices or things that are essentially Christian in nature and outlook, in substance and form and indeed in principle and practice but imposed on us. We have not been talking of Christianisation because Sunday has been forced on us as a work-free day, or the Cross as our hospital sign and symbol, our membership of the International Red Cross, and many other things including almost all the titles of the heads of academic institutions (chancellor, provost, dean, rector, etc.). Despite this remarkable tolerance from Muslims over the years, CAN appears to be increasingly becoming Islamophobic and paranoid about its hate and intolerance of Islam, casting aspersions, unnecessarily overheating the polity and unjustifiably creating fear and distrust in the minds of peace-loving citizens of our great country. We are poised to advise CAN to, in the spirit of Biblical injunctions, uphold the truth for its sake and tread the path of honour and refrain from statements capable of causing disaffection and promoting disharmony that may lead to conflict in the country." http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/22/nigerian-christians-hatred-islam-nscia/ cc: lalasticlala, mynd44

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on the Church to speak up against illegal and corrupt actions of the Federal Government to stem the drift of the country into an era of unprecedented crisis. In a keynote address at the 12th General Synod of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion at Saint Paul's Cathedral in Port Harcourt on Wednesday , Governor Wike said:"As long as the state of affairs in Nigeria does not conform to the ideas of justice, democracy, the rule of law and the moral injunctions of God, and as long as their remains no clear hope that things are going to change for the good of the country, we need as many voices that can speak truth to power and the Church of God cannot afford to keep quiet, while things go wrong and the nation continues to drift dangerously towards the cliff of crisis." Governor Wike regretted that the fight against corruption has been politicised and skewed in a manner to oppress opponents of the Federal Government. He said: "People say power of any kind corrupts, but political power can be more vicious if exercised unchecked and in disregard of democratic norms. While we all support the Federal Government’s much-vaunted, but pretentious fight against corruptionit is patently wrong to fight corruption with corruption and double-speak or by side-stepping the rule oflaw, disobeying court orders and blackmailing the judiciary to submission. Unfortunately, this is the order of the day under the present democratic dispensation." The governor called on the Church to be active moral guardians of political powers as instructed by God in order to reassert its influence as a critical voice for justice and insisting that Government actions must at all time be secured on legal and moral legitimacy. He said: "How can the Federal Government justify the situation where former public office holders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are continuously harassed, hunted and hounded with corruption charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, while at the same time sparing those other members who defected to the All peoples Congress of similar investigations and treatment except the pure vendetta against His Excellency, Dr. Bukola Saraki for daring to contest the office of the Senate Presidency against the wish of the cabals in his party. "What has become of the case of those who were arrested for printing fake ballot papers with INEC’s authentic serial numbers to be used to rig the December 2016 legislative re-run elections? Have we not been vindicated by the recent judgments of the election tribunals, which strangely but questionably accepted and based their judgments on the fake results presented to them from the custody of the Nigerian Police, which actively and shamelessly participated in the rigging process?". The governor used the 12th General Synod of the Church of Nigeria to outline steps his administration took to reposition Rivers State after the Amaechi's administration mismanaged funds that accrued to the state. He said: "It is over two years since we assumed office on May 29 2015. As some of us may recall, our experience as an incoming or new government was quite harrowing. In the first instance, the outgoing government never gave us a chance to succeed and sabotaged us from the very beginning. Apart from refusing to cooperate with our transition team, we were startled by the state of things we inherited. "First, they emptied the State’s treasury to such an extent that we had no other choice than to scurry for funds from banks to pay salaries, run initial activities and prevent the government from failingbefore we even started. And when we did that with authorization from the State House of Assembly, they screamed blue murder just to score unavailable political points". He regretted that despite the corruption of the immediate past administration, the Federal Government has refused to prosecute the perpetrators of corrupt actions in the state. Governor Wike said that after two years , his administration has revived Rivers State, improved the road infrastructure, health facilities and education. He said: "Our economy has not only recovered, it is growing, creating jobs and driving our development agenda. Here in Rivers State, we have not only cleared the salary arrears we inherited, we do not owe salaries to any civil servant. In deed, we are presently in a position to pay salaries to civil servants without relying on budget support from the federal government. " The fact cannot be denied that before we came in Port Harcourt roads were some of the worst wrecked in this country. Today, residents and visitors to Diobu, Port Harcourt Township, Forces Avenue, Harold Wilson Drive, Borokiri, D/Line, Oro-Worokwo, Ogbunabali, Nkpogu, Dr. Peter Odili road and other parts of the State capital now drive on some of the smoothest roads you can ever think of." In his remarks, Primate of Anglican Church, Most Rev Nicholas Okoh said the theme of the General Synod, "Thou shalt not steal", is taken from the Bible and forms the Church's commitment to the fight against corruption. He said: "Leaders or persons who usurp the positions or privileges of others, either forcefully or clandestinely are also stealing. The culture of percentage kickbacks on contracts, outright embezzlement of public funds and bribery are all acts of stealing. "Political oppression, marginalization, sidelining , injustice and discrimination are all forms of stealing. Kidnappers are guilty of breaking the eight commandment in very gruesome ways". Also speaking, the Archbishop of Anglican Archbishop of Niger Delta Province; Most Rev Ignatius Kattey described Governor Wike as a man who keeps his promises. He commended the governor for always supporting the Church and also executing projects that are beneficial to the people. http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/20/speak-illegal-action-government-wike-church-leaders/ cc: lalasticlala, mynd44

A Naval officer has dragged his wife to court after infecting her with HIV and throwing her out of their matrimonial home. PoliticsNGR gathered that the a Naval officer who is currently serving at Barrack Maintainance Unit, Port Harcourt by the name Lt. Cdr. Kazeem Owolabi Emiabata, deliberately infected his legally married wife, Titilayo with HIV and threw her out of their matrimonial home after she discovered his anti-retroviral drugs and medical records, which showed that he had been on treatment for a long period without disclosing his status to her. She confronted him and later told her parents about her predicament when she got tested and her result came out positive. Lt. Cdr. Emiabata threatened to deal with his now estranged wife if she exposed his HIV status and has vowed to use the Police and other means to "kill Titilayo before HIV/AIDS kills him". Making true his threat, Titilayo was prosecuted by the Nigerian Police Force for alleged "house breaking" and "stealing" because she went to pack her personal belongings out of their matrimonial home after she was sent out of their matrimonial home. PoliticsNGR further learnt that the case titled "Commissioner of Police, Ogun State vs Mrs. Titilayo Emiabata" comes up tomorrow Thursday 21st September, 2017 by 9am at the Chief Magistrate Court in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State presided over by Senior Magistrate E.O. The All Progressives Congress has stated that its current membership is over 15.2 million. The party boasted of its 'growing membership', expressing strong confidence that it will sweep the 2019 elections and retain the presidency. PoliticsNGR learned that the Deputy national chairman of the APC(North), Shuaibu Lawal, made this statement when he received the Deputy director of the Research Office, International Department of the Communist Party of China(IDCPC), Dong Weihua at the party's national secretariat, Abuja. He said: "I make bold to say that there is no other option before Nigerians other than the APC. We inflicted a very big injury on the former ruling party in 2015. During the campaigns, we realized our own method benefitted us because our manner of campaign was devoid of any hate speech. Theirs was full of hate speech and Nigerians clearly saw the difference. The APC currently has 15.2 million members. The eyes of Nigerians are open. They know who is sincere about things. Nigerians know which party to choose when elections come in 2019. So I can assure you we are very confident in 2019 for a re-election." http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/17/apc-membership-hits-15-2-million-vows-win-2019-elections/

The Nigerian presidency has replied former president Olusegun Obasanjo over his call on President Buhari to meet with the leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra(IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Speaking to journalists on Saturday, the president's special adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina had this to say about Obasanjo's advice; “It is an opinion that he has proffered and when you proffer an opinion, it is not a law or a rule”, he said. “It is now left for the person who was given the advice to consider it.” It will be recalled that Nnamdi Kanu has not been seen or heard from ever since the Nigerian military stormed his residence in Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia state. Findings by PoliticsNGR reveal that Kanu might still be in Abia state but in hiding. http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/17/biafra-presidency-responds-obasanjos-call-buhari-meet-kanu/

The Nigerian Labour Congress has reacted to the engagement of the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) by the Nigerian army. The group called for restraint on the part of the army, adding that military authorities needed to retrain officers in handling security challenges. In a statement made available to PoliticsNGR on Saturday, the president of the Nigerian labour congress, Ayuba Wabba, also condemned the invasion of the National Union of Journalists in Aba, Abia state. He said; "While we applaud the federal government for the steps taken so far by security agencies to secure lives and properties of all Nigerians in all parts of the country, it is important that the agencies, including the military, should not act in any manners that provoke situations that ultimately strengthen the cause, capacities and popularity of the advocates of disunity and inter-ethnic strife. It is unaccepted that journalists carrying out their legitimate functions can be so dastardly attacked as has been reported of the incident in Umuahia during a security operation by the Nigeria Army. It is the duty of journalists to report, including taking pictures, audio and video recording of incidents anywhere in the country as part of their professional calling. The attack on them, especially at the secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists in Umuahia is not only unacceptable but unnecessarily provocative. Although the Nigerian Army has issued a public statement to apologise to the NUJ and the affected journalists while promising to investigate the incident and ultimately discipline the military personnel involved, we advise that the military high command should re-train its officers and men on contemporary ways of handling security challenges in a country under constitutional governance. We also advice the federal government to handle the on-going agitations, which is fast developing into unimaginable inter-ethnic violence that is spreading to some parts of the country as has been reported of Jos in Plateau state, Port Harcourt in River State, Aba and Umuahia in Abia State with utmost dexterity in the interest of peace, unity and collective interest of the entire country and her citizens. Culprits of threats to our national integrity, nationhood and sovereignty must be apprehended and tried in accordance with extant national laws and international conventions without taking any further steps that will create another mayhem; as we have been contending with in the north east,". http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/17/baifra-act-caution-nlc-warns-army/ cc: lalasticlala, mynd44

A heavily pregnant woman, who suddenly went into labour while in commercial bus to Lagos Island was this morning rushed to Lagos Island Maternity by the operatives of Rapid Response Squad patrolling Ketu Alapere. The pregnant lady, in her early 30s was inside a danfo bus enroute Lagos Island when she started calling for assistance of other passengers in the bus that the baby's head was out. On getting wind of the ceaseless shouts of, "please help, the baby's head is out", the RRS Officers close by Ketu Alapere footbridge moved the lady out into RRS vehicle and took her to a private hospital in Ogudu where she was rejected because she had no card. Losing so much fluid, the lady suggested she should be taken to Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, where she was instantly received and taken to the Labour Room. The officers left the lady in custody of three volunteers and nurses before leaving the hospital to return to their beat in Ketu Alapere this afternoon.

The United States Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, has threatened to bar Nigerian airlines from flying to its country due to Security issues. The organization has given a 65-day ultimatum to Nigerian airlines to address the specified security risks or risk being barred. This development is coming shortly after a team of US FAA officials carried out an audit for the renewal of Nigeria's category one safety status. The ultimatum was issued on August 24th. PoliticsNGR learned that the US FAA periodically checks foreign airports with which it has bilateral agreements to ensure they meet set standards. The checks include having effective and efficient aviation regulations, operational state civil aviation systems and safety oversight functions and technical personnel qualification and training. Others include the provision of technical guidance, tools, provision of safety-critical information, licensing, certification, authorization and approval obligations. However, an industry expert, John Ojutiku, CEO of Centurion Securities and member of the Aviation Industry think-tank, Aviation Round table, ART, had this to say; "Many stakeholders would probably be asking; what is the necessity for the certification when the industry was already classified category one? What many do not know, however, is that the classification of Nigeria as Category one, was meant only for the NCAA Regulations and oversight competence, the way university academic programs are rated or accredited by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC). Unfortunately, the NCAA is like a university that has been long accredited but has not been able to graduate a student. The NCAA, in spite of its category one status classification in 2010 and even today in 2017 after its reclassification, has not been able to give certification to a single airport among the over 28 federal and state airports in the country." http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/05/us-threatens-bar-nigerian-airlines-entering-country/ cc; lalasticlala, mynd44

Former Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu has backed the government's decision to use the military to monitor all social media activities in the country. Aliyu, who was governor of Niger from May 2007 to May 2015, noted on Sunday that Nigerians should not condemn the actions of the Federal Government, considering the fact that if some of these contents are not well monitored on social media, there is a tendency that it could be used to create religious and ethnic tension amongst Nigerians. "I support monitoring of the social media by the security agencies to control negative stories that can influence the lives of unsuspecting subscribers to do the wrong thing they never intended to do. You cannot say negative things about a person or an institution especially when they are false without being challenged. Some governments close the social media or part of it when they are in crisis in order to save their countries from collapse because of people who may not understand the use of social media," he said. http://politicsngr.com/2017/09/03/theres-no-harm-military-monitors-social-media-babangida/

The Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibril, has given reason why the Federal Government preferred to entrust the remaining snakes, millipedes and spiders which were impounded at Calabar ports more than three weeks ago to the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment, University of Uyo. He said they found out that it was the university that had some of the very few snakes’ experts in the country. Jibril said that they would like the experts to regenerate the rare snakes whose venom was sought after and highly priced in the international market. He spoke in Calabar at the premises of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in the presence of officials of the Nigerian Customs Service which had impounded the wildlife that was imported by unknown persons who are presently at large. “We are convinced that these wildlife will be well conserved at the university because they have experts. The snakes experts can help us do further studies about them. We know too that the venom from these snakes cost fortunes in the international market,” the minister said. He commended the efforts and synergy by the Nigerian Customs Service and other agencies before, during and when the three wooden boxes which contained 140 species of the snakes and 600 animals were formally handed over to Dr Edem Eniang who heads the forestry department of UNIUYO by the minister. The boxes had geckos, millipedes, hairy frogs and spiders, imported into the country from Cameroon, all valued at N6.9 million. The illegal consignments were heading to Luxembourg in Europe when they were impounded by the Nigeria Internal Waterways Agency Calabar. http://politicsngr.com/2017/08/23/fg-hands-seized-poisonous-snakes-frogs-uniuyo-photos/ cc: lalasticlala, mynd44

Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri has knifed the presidency over President Muhammadu Buhari's decision to work from home due to a rat invasion of his main office. President Buhari's media aide, Garba Shehu who spoke to the BBC earlier today stated that the President's office was infested with rats and had to undergo renovation thus the reason for relocating him to his home office. Omokri didn't buy the statement and urged Shehu to be 'truthful'. Omokri posted on Twitter; "If President Muhammadu Buhari is not strong enough to go to his office, Garba Shehu should say the truth and shame Satan rather than blame “rodents”! Only in Nigeria can a “rodent” chase a lion away from his den! Or is Garba Shehu referring to human rodents of the#ResumeorResign variety? Since AsoRock is a den of “rodents”, it's my patriotic duty to warn the Presidency to proactively begin protecting Muhammadu Buhari from Lassa Fever." http://politicsngr.com/2017/08/22/protect-buhari-lassa-fever-omokri-mocks-presidency-rat-invasion/ cc: lalasticlala,mynd44
