Felicity001: My brother bought an hyundia with same battery problem you mentioned in your post here....this is a direct Tokunbo car or not a naija used... He changed over 4 new batteries and countless numbers of sarpenter belt because the charging alternator just won't stop getting hot so making the belt to burn and cut off.
When it comes to engineering nothing is guaranteed bro. I agree in part. Toks cars can have their own issues but by and large, your chances of getting a good car is higher with Toks than Naija used. Infact if you are buying a luxurious car or a vehicle with scarce parts, your best bet is Toks. Until recently, there was a time most people didn't even entertain the idea of getting a Naija used car. The current situation of the country is what's making Naija used cars the darling of everyone. |

Gentlelife50: My Guy a dealer buy car F150 but everything was normal as we test drive, put machine and there was no check engine lights or whatsoever lights on the dashboard. But on our way back the steering became as strong and stiff as if you're driving a trailer, we called the man he said he knows nothing about it that he even bought the car for personal use. We spent days at ojuelegba trying to sort the issue, bought different steering racks and pumps even bought one brand new. Until we took it to one Guy that said we should go and come back but before we go that his pannel beater will check if their is catalyst so we don't come and say he removed it. That he has experienced it several times, we argued that the car is toks and no lights but the Guy insist then we paid the panel and to our greatest fear no catalyst. We end of fixing it the next day, but the technician couldn't notice all these before payments were made. Trying out different steering racks must have been a nightmare. It is one of the most difficult jobs to do in a car. Most catalysts are stolen before the vehicle arrives. Sometimes they cut out the entire exhaust and you'll spend hundreds of thousands of naira replacing it. The business of selling cars whether Toks or Naija used is not for the faint hearted. How was the steering stiffness resolved? |

Gentlelife50: Thank you my brother, buying Naija used cars na wahala. Most times when u don reach house u go come begin dey see why the owner sell am, and we don't have records like some foreign used cars that the history is there. The owner won't dare mention any of the faults to you and if u notice any by yourself they will lie that it just started, wasn't like that before. To worsen the whole thing, agents don't care about making proper inspection, they are only interested in getting buyer and get their cut even if the car no reach house dat wan na ur business. They will sweet tongue you into paying once you pay OYO now ur name, even if you go with mechanics there are some errors you won't still notice until you start using the car. You have spoken well. One guy on nairaland narrated his experience with a Lexus ES350. The car was draining battery. He buys a new battery, two weeks later, battery is dead. He spent a lot of money chasing the problem till he got tired and sold it to the next unfortunate buyer. Even if you carry 10 mechanics to inspect it, they won't detect the issue. When buying a car especially if it's Nigeria used, na to prepare for the worst. The one wey dey even shock me is how greedy and unreasonable our people can be. They never bother to maintain the cars but are quick to slam a ridiculous amount of money on it when it's time to sell. |

I was stopped by a policeman today. He asked for my papers and I gave him the photocopies as usual. He said the engine number was stated as NIL. Told him that's because we checked severally and couldn't find it. He said I was supposed to get a court affidavit and police report. I told him there's no law that says I have to do that. He told me to park properly since I want to prove stubborn. I entered the car and zoomed off leaving him with the photocopies.
Any need to go report it missing in the police station and get a police report? I don't trust him not try something funny with the papers with him.

buygala: What is poor about 19mpg? What is the actual difference in fuel cost between someone who does 19mpg and another doing 25mpg in say a week assuming both of them do an average of 200km a week?
Less than 3k a week and 10k a month. At 100km a week which is typical for most people doing 8-5, you're looking at a little over 1k a week and less than 5k a month. So much ado about nothing.
Only those who use their vehicles for public transport and cover hundreds of miles weekly should bother about these things
This is your original post where you mentioned mpg and kilometres in your first paragraph... How do you expect someone who doesn't know both measurements to reconcile your mpg yarns with the sudden shift to yarns about 200km?
4 weeks make one month?.. So 30 days or 31 days which make most months are four weeks? .. Please Remind me how many days are in a week?
NNPC official fuel price has been 617 per litre since 18th of this month.. The fact that you are mentioning 568 per litre makes me question whether you even own a vehicle...in which case trying to educate you is pointless...
And then you condescendingly thinking that tune-up parts will deteriorate within 7 months makes me wonder what kind of Jalopy you have been hopping, that's if you even have a car at all.
And please just sleep if you can't mention where in Nigeria you ar buying fuel at 568 per litre as at today. I stopped reading @the bolded. Whatever makes you sleep well at night bro. Ventura1: Most filling stations sell N568 in Lagos, with some like Petrocam selling at N565, it could be cheaper in Mushin due to closeness to Apapa port. |

buygala: Bros, your maths isn't mathing.. You further confuse the confusion by mixing up miles and kilometres.. They are not the same.. 1 mile= 1.6km.
Using your example, a person driving a 25mpg vehicle will be covering 6.25 miles per litre of fuel.. That means he will spend 4 litres worth of fuel every 25 miles..at 617 naira per litre, that's 2,468 naira.. That's even assuming a gallon is exactly 4 litres which it isn't... I think it's closer to five litres than it is to four.
On the other hand, using the same 4-litre and 617 naira per litre scenario, someone driving a 19mpg vehicle will be covering 4.75 miles per litre... Which means he will need 5.2 litres to cover the same 25 miles... 617 ×5=3085 naira...approximate that to 3200 to account for the price of the extra .2 litres...
3200-2468= 732 naira.. That's the extra expense every 25 miles accruing to the dude driving a 19mpg vehicle..
With your 100km per week scenario, which is 62.5 miles (100÷1.6), person driving a 25mpg vehicle will need 10 litres of fuel to cover 100km/62.5 miles.. 617 ×10= 6,170 naira.
While a person driving a 19mpg vehicle will need 13.15 litres to cover the same 100km/62.5 miles.. 617 ×13=8, 021 naira...Round that up to 8,200 naira to account for the extra .15 litres.
8200-6170 =2030
That's a 2,030 naira difference for every 100km per week according to your scenario ...and 10, 120 for five weeks, assuming the same 100km is covered every week.
That extra 10k naira expense is substantial enough to ginger an average person into trying to tune up his vehicle to get more mpg. Miles and km were not mixed but used as appropriate. Not everyone buys fuel at 617/litre. Do your maths again with 568/litre and tell us the result. I said it's above 1k a week "savings" covering 100km which is the same result you would have gotten. What did you say was wrong with my maths again? And where are you getting 5 weeks from? 4 weeks makes one month. Now that we agree that the extra expense a month is less than 10k between 25 and 19mpg. Lets say you spend 50k trying to tune up your car just to save less than 8000 a month. It will take you 7 months before you make any real savings assuming all the tokunbo parts you buy don't start acting up before then. I repeat its much ado about nothing. |

Felicity001: You guys say these things as if you bought a brand new car. For a 2005 corolla that has been in used for say 18yrs efficiency will drop by some percentage. 5k fuel now is approximately 8ltrs. You won't compare the quality of fuel we get here in Nigeria with Western world. Some stations even adjust their meters we all know this. Modern cars have a reading so you can tell if truly what you bought is relative because you're not inside the tank of a Corolla to know exactly how many ltrs was pumped into the tank.
But the question the guy is asking is how much fuel is ideal or enough to gross 40/45k these days.
Mind you, you've to do pickups, drive to hub areas to get fantastic trips again.
Anyone arguing bolt pays better than indriver is obviously living in the past.
How much fuel is relative to gross 40/45k now using a Kia Rio or a Corolla that's the question the guy is asking Just wanted to comment on the first part of your post. Manufacturers are sometimes conservative with their stated mpg. It is not unusual to get above their stated mpg irrespective of the age of the car. I have a vehicle rated at 18mpg city. The least I get driving conservatively is 19mpg and depending on road conditions, it can go as high as 23mpg. And like I always say, a lot depends on how you drive. And you're right. In this PH, I have not seen any filling station without adjusted pump. Not even NNPC. |
