its complicated

because as a naija matter people would undervalue items they are bringing in as a matter of course

the problem is how value is measured

eg - i will never buy a pc brand new - i usually buy manufacturer refurbished

by doing that i would pay maybe 50% of the shelf price.

that is how i have ordered pcs online since 20010

but will customs believe if i tell them that this system price is not $2500, but $ 1200? when they can check it directly on lenovo website? - more so when your average nigerian PC seller will bu manufacturer refurb/open box and sell as brand new?

unfortunately, as far as i can tell the rates customs charges are opaque so no one knows what is actually what.

and nigerians and theri own dodght practices

i replaced my laptop battery and it did not have lenovo on it. i challenged the seller. i said it was a fake battery he sold. he then explained that to get the battery past customs they had to rebrand it. [not sure if he meant chinese customs or naija customs]

it is likely they are also being called out.

as an aside, customs in brazil go hard. you no fit buy ps5 for that side if you are not seriously loaded
But undervaluing it shouldn't be a headache for Customs. Even Insurance is not crying when you undervalue your item.

Undervaluing an item actually puts the owner at risk. If the item gets missing, it is what you put there, that you'll be paid.

That's what is being discussed on twitter in the past 3 days. Customs are arbitarily assessing and determining the value of package and charging duties based on whatever value they decide to assign to the package.

You may buy a vehicle for $2.5k online and when Customs wants to charge duty they will arbitarily value the vehicle at say $6k. I've been seeing importers lamenting about this on twitter.

Only God knows if all these is due to Customs focusing too much on revenue generation while paying less attention to other duties like securing our borders, safeguarding national security and facilitating international trade
I have never heard of this one before. Na why I dey ask.

That means the Insurance and Customs have different values for the items

If e loss, you get $51
If e no loss, and you wan clear, you pay $300.

If we want to start rewarding everybody that goes above a certain level doing their job, e no go end. The falcons are not on a monthly salary scheme, so it makes sense they get bonuses of this nature, though I think the largesse shown them was in excess and shouldn't be normalized, certainly not with the level of rot that exists in sports in the country, but it's what it is, if the girls didn't get the money it'd have been looted.

The Three Lionesses that won Euro's 2025 got 1.75 Million Pounds, pre tax...a country like Nigeria shouldn't be spending over 2.5 Million USD to reward athletes.

Many people landed abroad from airport their contact no pick phone again. That is where the hustle and struggle starts. From day 1 nowhere to sleep. Front no fit progress, you cannot go backwards. Na to enter homeless shelter from day 1

Some people you see sleeping for roadside for America or even in Lagos, Na so e dey start.

Your comment will only fly, if the other person is asking for some favors.

As long as you're alive and not in jail (I am assuming he is), there is absolutely no reason why you cannot reach out to anyone if you want to. Gratitude is intentional.

Only people who have been there can tell. Not everyone will tell you what they are really going through, I have heard of folks who left Nigeria comfortably, landed in Canada exchange rate changes messed up their school fees had to leave school, no money for rent and landed in Homeless shelter. Shey na person wey dey homeless shelter wan dey prioritize calling friends? The shame of his current situation wont even let him breathe.

One of my classmates in this same Yankee, On group whatsapp chats we suddenly stopped hearing from him, around 2020, people reached out to him multiple times, he didnt pick. It was late last year that I heard he had a stroke and lost function of his limbs and body functions. and still recovering. Obviously his wife and family took over his phone and shut it off

Some people are just consumed with life issues whether good or bad, even on this Sport section, many people just stopped posting suddenly you reached out multiple times and no response, then all you have to do is wish them well. Shebi you heard of a poster was it dopejemi that someone came here to say he had some issues in Southy. No be so itsrm stop communicating with us, One troublesome guy on Chelsea thread too tht was always spamming us with Mason Mount

Today for Yankee when people from traffic issues to alligator alcatraz, We can only hope and pray they are well and okay

Some people in that situation ghost even their parents and family members never mind friends
As sympathetic as the bolded example sounds, they do not in any way relate to the situation being discussed

Someone housed you for 9 months and fed you....Did anybody here feed itsr.m or dpejemi?

Nobody said he should even send anything back. A simple reaching out to your guy to say "I have arrived oh"...Your own guy that did what family didn't do for you, is what we want to give big big explanation for?

I disagree. Your friend's struggle and this guy struggle no be the same. Everybody wen arrive get their own struggles and e get levels. If this friend is alive and flexing on SM or if he heard the guy dey call others and never call am, that is different.

We can't confirm the guy is calling everybody else but him. We can't confirm this guy is still alive. But "friend" run go SM dey call the guy a betrayer because of his silence.
So if you confirm that he actually has been alive, and didn't reach out, what will be the excuse? He was struggling so much, he didn't even have 10 minutes to reach out for 30 seconds?

I'm assuming the complainant thinks he's alive...And if he is, he is an ungrateful person.

All these reasons you gave doesn't cut it in ay way. Even people wey pass Sokoto and Agadez to reach Morroco, still dey drop feedback in months for their family

Person apply for visa, use plane reach abroad, and e dey very busy to drop WhatsApp message for him homie wey house am for 9 months.

Respectfully, there is no spade to be called here. Immigrating to Yankee isn't the same as moving from Aba to Lagos. We are unsure about his Visa situation. Are you even sure this guy is alive? If the post was about checking on the guy it would be different. What type of useless friendship is this sef?

Do you have any idea what it takes to actually settle down after you move to the US, worsestill, if you are on your own? You are saying 1 year? I dare anyone who has immigrated from Nigeria to US for the first time to come and tell us he/she settled on their own after 1 year. I don't mean people who have relations providing support for them. I mean people who figured it out themselves, especially, those on non-working visas.. People that figured their finances, social circle, work etc! Wetin you dey cap sef?

True friendship isn't about YOU all the time and talking ill of a supposed friend whom you have not heard from in 3 years, because you feel betrayed by his silence. You help pesin, you don help, move on fam! No help me come hold me ransom to help when you never even read or sabi if I even dey alive sef!

I was expecting him to say, e see the guy online dey flex life and don forget am. You sabi how many Nigerians dey here wen never still settle after 5 years? You are battling with yourself on how to make am, pesin dey somewhere dey tell the world say you betray am because of your silence!

Naaaaaa..
Even when God helps you, and you don't show gratitude, God sef dey vex.

I didn't even pay attention to the conversation, but he's right.

I have friends who relocated, and struggled, and I didn't even do half of what that guy did for them, but they reach out once in a while

The person you are defending is an ungrateful person. Communication is a big form of respect, and he has shown none.

Theflint1 dey do like say no be work person work to see the money person wan use buy the land. The fact that the money for the land was not stolen or a gift should actually make anyone observe all necessary due diligence.

Why should I drop money for a land when we've not crossed all the t's and dot the i's? Even yahoo boys wey dey see money yanfu-yanfu dey carry either family member or a lawyer to help them do every due diligence before dropping money for land.

Any land deal in which one is being pressured to drop money and develop ASAP is definitely a suspicious transaction.
99.9999% probability

If I sold my land to you, why should I pressure you to develop it?

Theflint1:
That link you posted, you'd see where they said that the process of getting a government consent can take up to 6 months to one year...most of these lands are community owned and without government consent, so now imagine buying a property and waiting that long before you can begin development on it.

Sure you'd say it's better to wait than be sorry, but in reality we know it hardly ever works like that, sometimes you just want to begin development as money dey hand, other times the community will be breathing down your neck to develop or they'd reallocate your land and sometimes development post purchase is something that's done to protect against land-grabbing.

There are just many things that makes real estate investment in Nigeria feel like you're dealing in the wild west, and the bulk of the work that has to be done to ensure it's a seamless and safe investment class is the governments. In fact their involvement is one of the major reasons that it's risky sef, and that you can't just lay the blames at the feet of the investors solely.
I don't know about you, but for the few times I have experienced land purchases, the first thing you ask for is documentation.

This is not even just about Consent or CofO. It's about who owns the land. It's about if the land survey has been registered.

Any community pushing you to develop or else they will reallocate is 99% likely to be a dubious deal

Even for VI, land still dey wey dem fence, and dem never develop am.

Two things I have learnt in buying land

1) Confirm documentation before paying

2) If you don't have money to fence and redo the documents immediately, no buy oh.
