If South Africa economy was booming, many of the middle class South Africa that will be created will need housemaids for instance. Black South Africans would refuse to do the jobs and hence will Africans from poorer countries not only to feel that job but many jobs they won't touch again.

If South Africa had grown as fast as it should,it's GDP would have been 3 times its current size.

To end xenophobia in South Africa, a very deep approach will be needed.

1. Make the labour market flexible.
Because the labour market is rigid, most companies are scared of employing workers that are difficult to sack. By making it much easier to sack workers, employers will be willing to employ more

Presently, only 5m people in South Africa pay tax out of a population of over 50m. This is scandalously low. The rigid labour market has created massive underemployment hence many blacks have no jobs and are resentful. This resentment is piled on other Africans.

2. Crime

South Africa has a very high crime rate. The place is a gangsters paradise.

Simple solution is to increase policing and presence in the most crime ridden areas. If need be, send in the army. Apartheid days are gone. Blacks in the township need not to see the police as an occupation force as they did over 30 years ago.

Low crime rate will help reduce xenophobic attacks as such attacks are easy to perpetrate in areas prone to crime.

3. Fast economic growth.

South Africa needs it's economy to grow very fast to create enough jobs for all South Africans.

Presently, it's growth rate is nothing to write home about.

Let me help you explain it since you want to claim ignorance. The overly sensationalized depiction of "Nigerians" in general as criminals on your media is sensitizing your populace and emboldening them to take laws into their hands.

1.Granted there are dubious characters of Nigerian extract that live in your country, the over-whelming evidence is that these gangs or individuals are concentrated in major cities across the vast landscape of South Africa being Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and to a lesser extent cape town.

2. Granted there are 1million Nigerians in South Africa, and a 1:1 ratio of women to men, leaving 500,000 males who are possible miscreants, Extrapolate demographically and of that 500,000 who are males, 1/3rd are younger than 17, excluding them from participating in criminal activities because they are minors.

3. That would leave roughly 330,000 potential male criminals. Extrapolate a further 1/3rd for Nigerians ( and I am being frugal here) who are professionals, engaged in legal activities, embassy workers, teachers, legitimate students, etc and you are left with a potential 200,000 Nigerians who are engaged in criminal activity.

So 200,000 potential criminals concentrated within a small area of the aforementioned cities above and it is quite easy to depict them as an invasion of criminals given that the entire population of Black South Africans stands at about 40-49 million and the second largest immigrant population being that of Zimbabwe at 3- 4million people.

This is how an ignorant population are able to be emboldened to take action against one man walking around with his daughter in the middle of a township.

if you do your research well, you'd see Nigerians prefer their countries over any other African country except those going there just to be seen as intl student and few others doing company works. The only tribe that goes about like a lost soul is our igbo brothers and reason they are mostly victims of all these incessant killings. The last time ghanaians locked up their shops here in ghana where as there are other tribes from Nigeria in same market who doesn't fall victim of the incident. It's just them.
