Afternoon guys,

You guys should help me thank God! I Passed my Practical driving test today with 1 minor! on my 2nd Attempt.

My 1st Attempt was Zero minors and 2 serious faults (One for putting the gear in drive instead of reverse when pulling out after parking in bay. As I tapped the accelerator, the car lurched forward and I braked only to realise the examiner also braked too - Rookie mistake as I was not used to the instructors car and the Second was for observation not checking blind spot when pulling out from stopping on the left and a car was approaching. - This happened after the parking bay incident and I was already shaken).

To God be the glory! Now to move on to other matters.

N.B To anyone still practicing for their license be encouraged with this update

Congratulations!!!... Test dates are a headache right now. Were you driving in Nigeria? How many hours of practice did you do here (if you don't mind answering)

To answer your question, I use Amex for my daily expenses, but also make sure I monitor it.
So if my budget for the month is £100, I set up a direct debit from any of my account for that £100, and use my Amex to buy things. If somehow, I exceed my budget, then after the direct debit is done, I'd pay the balance as I usually have 7 days after my direct debit before interest kicks in.
I do not use it for massive purchases that I cannot afford (use PayPal pay in three for those)

I also do not use up to 30% monthly (because... you wan wreck me?? )
This has not affected my credit score in any way (but then I'm only about 3 months in). On the contrary, my credit reading has gone from Amber to a solid green, so I must be doing something right .

Your tax rate might be different from others so there is no one yard stick to measure what ones take home is relative to next door.
Your tax depends on your Age Marital status, wages, these are used to derive your tax code and 20%.
20% are for those with no tax code or those who failed to submit their P45 to new employer

Everybody gets taxed. That is why UK residents are notorious for not parting with money.
If you are earning £20k per annum, £12570 (if it has not changed) is tax free, the remaining £7k+ is taxed at 20%. If you are earning £51k, £12,570 is tax free, £12,571 to £50,001 (not too sure on the exact amount) is 20%, 50,001 to 51k is 40%.
Tax rate is different based on income bracket.

I actually applied for mine last year with the post office. When I tried to do it online, it required me putting in 3 years of address which I did not have, so had to go to the post office to apply and send off. At that time also, after applying online, you'd have to wait for them to send a document or so to you before the application was deemed complete. But applying at the post office meant it got sent off immediately.
However, it took me six weeks to get it back, and that was when there was a massive backlog in DVLA issuing licences. I don't know if the process has changed or if online will be viable for you. If online is not viable, do offline. It may take time but you'd get it eventually

Surrey big now. Where in Surrey? You might want to look into proximity to work, to reduce transport cost, unless you are driving.
P.S: Surrey is generally pricey rentwise, unless you are coming from London, then it's the same range

Nigerian driving experience, normalises all the negative habits (old habits die hard).......

Your hubby does not to be the family uber driver (if your husband's DL is over 3 years), get a small Toyota Aygo or similar, for home lessons ...........

Do more home lessons and less paid instructor lead lessons ..........

You'd not have to have so many classes to correct the bad habits, as against starting from scratch

I just started taking driving lessons and before this I had never driven or learnt how to in naija and I wish I had.

I've had 3 two hour lessons and I've had an earful from my instructor. I don't even know if I'm making progress at all and it's even automatic. I don watch YouTube videos tire.

Omo I don tell hubby say it's not a do or die. If I don't know how to drive nothing spoil, he will continue running errands. Lol

Word! I wish I had at least the rudimentary of driving a car. I dey budget 45hrs like this, cos the amount of corrections I get from my instructor is crazy. Hopefully, it's less.

All through my studies, I worked as a bank staff, cos it afforded me the flexibility to pick shift when I did not have deadlines to meet.
Only one was with the NHS. The other two roles were in a school and a shelter home, so not only NHS trust offer bank staff position

To the dude asking; yea, come in first. You can apply as a bank staff. That would actually be more beneficial to you in terms of flexibility. Whilst at it, also go online and apply to remote jobs as a Data Analyst. You never might know. It may not come immediately but if you have already started in the care industry, then at least you have an income. Keep at it. Something should eventually click

That’s the exact point we were making. Yours is an exception (if it indeed happened), not the norm. A lot of mistakes happen due to laziness, high workload, and an array of other reasons. That it happened to you and a few others does not make it the norm, it often comes at a great cost when you have to refund the taxman from the money you have already spent the previous year. The fact is that tax is applied cumulatively from the first pay cycle (week or month - 1/52 or 1/12 as the case may be), not until after you have earned your full allowance for that tax year.

So, to answer the OP’s question again, tax is due for payment from the first wage/salary and their employer was right to have deducted and remitted their tax to HMRC from the first salary. This has nothing to do with tax code or gross earnings.
