You must realize that no kingdom can exist without the backing of spiritual/supernatural forces/powers - good or bad.

You don't know who pharoah was and how he saw himself by virtue of his position as the king of Egypt - world power at the time. Hear him here:

See what YHVH Almighty said about pharoah here:

They exclaimed!

So, YHVH Almighty hardened the heart of Pharoah, the king of Egypt.
