Inna lilahi wa inna ilaehi rajiun. He may not be the most admirable of politicians, but he was clearly a cheerful giver, a great philantropist that never let his people down. I still prefer his stronghold of Kwara to his successor and son, Bukola's. |
With this guy's writing skill, one begins to wonder whether it's the same football fields that produced the likes of Ikpeba, Yekini and co that produced him. I don't think a veteran journalist would do better. Meanwhile, he is only dreaming. SA, even with all the home advantage, can't win this AFCON. Its between CIV, Ghana or Nigeria. If there is any outsider, it's going to be Algeria. SA can't win this AFCON. |
http://mobi.supersport.com/football/blogs/segun-odegbami/Its_Bafana_to_win It is still some eight weeks to the start of Afcon 2013. I am sitting in front of my crystal ball just as I promised. I drift into the future. It is February 10, 2013. The curtains have been drawn on the end of the Africa Cup of Nations. There is now a winner and 15 'losers'. I see a raised platform with football players waiting in line to be decorated by the CAF president, Issah Hayatou. He is accompanied by the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma. The continent has just watched three weeks of the best of African football. Now it is time to crown the king. Which country do I see on the exalted podium? Let me take you through the journey first. Group A It is South Africa all the way. The spirit of the championship, their position as hosts, the psychology of doing well in all the pre-championship friendly matches, creates a 'monster' for Morocco, Angola and Cape Verde. Angola should have come through with South Africa from the group if only they played the last and not their second match against South Africa. The sequence of matches is very critical in these group matches and South Africa win their first two matches to be comfortable going into the knock-out stage. So, Angola suffer and Morocco benefit by taking full advantage of their own last match against a South African team that does not need to play 'do-or-die' and risk everything by giving their all in their last match, having qualified earlier. That’s why Angola do not qualify from the group. In short, South Africa and Morocco go through in Group A. Group B There are some exciting matches here. Ghana and the Democratic Republic of the Congo provide the best of them. That they played against each other in the first match provides the opportunity, no matter the result of their match, of carefully navigating through the other matches against Mali and Niger. They easily secure a berth in the next round. The Congolese prove to be a strong team, because the core of the team comes from the TP Mazembe FC. They are to DR Congo what Barcelona FC are to Spain. The Malians and the Nigeriens only make up the numbers in this group without enough ammunition to cope with the maturity of Ghana and the cohesiveness of the Congolese. Ghana and DR Congo go through. Group C This is straightforward. Nigeria's 'coat of many brilliant colours' surely and entertainingly overcame Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. That, on the eve of the championship, Keshi is still inviting more and more players from the army of old Nigerian players all over Europe does not affect the team too much. Nigeria still creates a buzz here with some absolutely beautiful individual performances. The major test, as is expected, comes from Zambia. Nigeria and Zambia play a very cautious 'arrangee' match, safely avoiding any bruising contest that might damage either of them and stop them from coming out of the group. Zambia, as defending champions, play with confidence and eyes-on-the-trophy mentality. They outrun, outplay and overpower Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. Nigeria top the group nd Zambia come a close second. Group D On paper Ivory Coast looked like clear favourites, not just of the group but in the championship. Almost one year after disappointing at the last hurdle in Afcon 2012 in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, they are still 'wobbling and fumbling' to victory here. The 2012 team that was stronger failed to win. This one, with the same array of tired players that looks strong enough to take this championship, fail to do so, even if they go through this round. Togo 'help' all the other teams build up their points. The North Africans, Tunisia and Algeria, provide, perhaps, the match of the tournament when they meet each other. They bring out the best in each other whenever they meet. After that encounter they return to the hard reality of the rough and tumble of African football and one of them, Tunisia, falls by the wayside. The Algerians are slightly the stronger of the two North African teams and join Ivory Coast into the quarterfinals. So, these are the eight teams that come through: South Africa and Morocco; Ghana and DR Congo; Nigeria and Zambia and Ivory Coast and Algeria. Quarterfinals South Africa take on DR Congo and win. Ghana rout Morocco. Nigeria and Ivory Coast play a bruising match. This match inflicts too much damage on both teams and makes their semifinal match very difficult to win. The Super Eagles know they have to redeem their image against the Ivorians. They win this time for the first time in several previous championships. Zambia and Algeria play one of the best matches of the championship. The North Africans find the Zambians easier to play against than any other team in the quarterfinals because of the way the Zambians play but the Zambians must survive to get to the finals and defend their crown. They fail. This bridge is too difficult for them to cross. My crystal ball is getting hazy. Semifinals This is the ultimate test for the South Africans. They need to cross this line to win the championship. If they meet Ghana it will be bye-bye to their dream of repeating their 1996 feat. Should they meet Morocco they will arrive the finals confident that at that point no team can stop them. The whole of South Africa goes down on their knees in prayer. Who do they meet? The second semifinal is between…I am getting confused now. Algeria or Nigeria? Final My eyes are now playing tricks with my mind. Is it Ghana versus Algeria, or South Africa versus Nigeria. What’s happening here? I hear a loud shrill in my ears! I open my eyes, my heart pounding. I am staring at the blank crystal ball before me. I had fallen asleep. I am relieved. I will no longer have to put my neck on the chopping block predicting anything anymore. It has all been a dream. Or has it? I am thinking. Just before I woke up, did I not hear the sound of the vuvuzela, plus the faint chants of 'Bafana Bafana' reverberating in the distant recesses of my mind? |
Turbocharged: Constant malaria is a sign of poverty and low-life. Make money and you will become healthy.Healthy like Yar'adua, Patience Jonathan, Steve Jobs, Tayo Aderinokun abi? |
kinnkw: I normally do, widal, malaria and hepatitis B.Oh, great. I'm happy to be wrong. But this abdominal pain and general body weakness are the most classic symptoms of Hepatitis. |
Enough of roadmaps, blueprints. Na action we want. |
AC's Joe Igbokwe is still the fiercest attack dog in Nigeria today. You can't hardly catch ACN off-guard with this guy and Lai Mohammed. But of the two guys subject of this thread, it's clearly Doyin Okupe. |
kinnkw: Yes i have gone for HIV test twice, 2009 and 4 months ago. What of Hepatitis test? |
Of course, I respect both. But I gravitate towards mum in emotions. I'm more emotional about my mum. |
kinnkw: Since my relocation to Lagos since 2009, my health condition has greatly decreased. There is a very high likelihood that this is one of the H's. Pls go run Hepatitis test now now.I know an Hepatitis patient and these are the exact symptoms. It compromises the immunity and that is why you're having malaria at slightest mosquitoes contact. I pray I'm wrong, but there is 90% likelihood that that this is Hepatitis. 1 out of every 7 Nigerians is infected with Hepatitis now. |
The malaria part is being caused by compromised immunity. Go do other tests asap from HIV to Hepatitis. |

ugly Betty: After considering all these things, what about the size of the kitchen. for us women, it is necessary especially if you are going to stay in a flat or so.That was the first place my wife was always checking when we were checking houses to rent. |
Vicmareal: A Fashola & Ribadu ticket will mark d dawn of a new era, power shift and EVOLUTION of a new Nigeria; IF the merger works, there's a slim chance of PDP winning any polling unit on the platform of either rigging or merit.Save the Religion and Igbo factor, this appears to be a very powerful combination provided Tinubu and Buhari fully work for them. Fashola to face administration while Ribadu faces tackling corruption. |
If bothe get their acts together, they shoould be able to present a formidable opposition in 2015. But SS and SE still remain locked for PDP. |
wisdomolusola: Quite insightful and educative. Why did you leave your former job or why do you want to leave [/b]answer could for a career growth.Look for something the new employer(the new company you're seeking to join) has but the old one (the one you're currently in) doesn't have and package it. e.g When asked same question in an interview I did (I was seeking to move from one downstraem oil company to another), I answered thus: WWW is the old coy and YYY the new one I was seeking to join. WWW wasn't a multi-national, YYY was. "No doubt WWW is a company doing fine in its own right (never badmouth your employer!), a group of young men doing fine managing the company, but right from my school days, I had always wanted a world class environment where I can hone my skills with the best of brains from across different countries. I believe YYY offers a platform to achieve this, to maximize my potential. YYY is a multi-national and I believe it offers me a fantastic platform and it fits more into my career goal" Another one, leaving the WWW company(a Group consisting of upstream and downstream but upstream less developed) and interviewing for another company ZZZZ, which was more of upstream, relatively new in Nigeria but doing well. I responded to that question thus; "No doubt WWW is a good place, run by a group of ambitious young men (rule: never ever badmouth your employer!). However, having reviewed my career goal viz-a-viz the growth and value-adding opportunities offered by both companies, I think this organization(ZZZ) would provide a better platform not only for my development but opportunity to add more value. I have spent x years in the downstream division of teh industry and I think I your company would offer a fantastic opportunity to hone my skills at teh upper end of the stream and become an all-round oil and gas accountant. Yours is also a coming just coming up and from my review, you've got great potential. I see this company as becoming a force to reckon with within the next few years and I would be glad to be part of teh success, to be part of the team that contributed to teh success". We didnt agree on pay terms for teh first one, but by teh grace of God, I am today in the second one. |
Baby mama: Let me imagine I am applying for a job at Macdonalds as a an area supervisorNice one. |
mikron: I VE NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN AUTO CRASH BEFORE AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD WILL NEVER BE SO I GUESS I DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY.Amen for you. |
Pic 1 was the mark on the road-side bus stop the car veered into and still returned back to teh highway in reverse position, spinning. Without anyone controlling it. If people were staying by that roadside that morning, it would have been a different story. It would have also been a different story for me too if the roadside wasn't flat but a ditch. The car returned back to highway itself, spun for few seconds and stopped itself. Pics 2 & 3 were after teh car was cleared from teh road by the local touts who still collected money from me before teh car was removed (how heartless). |
Around June 2009. Wanted to rent a house, put a thread up in NL property section asking for a house to rent along Ajah axis. A Nairalander got in touch(she didn't tell me her ID till today but she was more of a reader) and we planned to meet at their newly completed house at Eputu Area, on Epe expressway(close to Lakowe). She described the place for me but there were too many turnings on the expressways and I wasnt sure of where exactly to turn. Still doing around 100km/hr opn that expressway, I was looking at the side to see where to turn as decsribed for me. Indecision made me lose concentration and busy looking at turnings (and I was still on fast lane), suddenly I realized one of my wheels was almost off-road, drifting to the road median. Instinctively, I tried returning it via the steering to the road and with little touch(power steering), teh car veered off teh road to the other side. In split second, I heard a loud sound 'huhuhuhuhuhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu' and I lost control, didnt do anything, jsut remained inside the car, the car (Honda Civic) veered out of teh road, returned in reverse to teh road, produced very loud sound. I thought the car was going to somersualt and had prepared for worst. The car stopped itself. All teh villagers, hearing teh loud sound had already trooped out watching like film. The car stopped in teh middle of teh road and to God be the glory, the next car behind me, a trailer, was far away enough to have been able to control itself before getting to where my car was performing film on teh highway. The point it veered off teh road was a kind of bus stop where people waiting for bus normally stood. I would have kiiled someone if anybody was by that roadside bus stop that morning. When the car stopped, I put off my seatbelt and opened teh door unhurt. The car was damaged.

The last time I was asked the weakness question was the first interview I attended shortly after I finished school - one investment institution. Then, I had no work place experience and skills and my responses to interviews then were more of tailor-made, theories, like answering exams questions. I had read materials on interviews like this and had tailor-made answers for most of teh questions. When asked what was my weakness in that interview, I remember answering thus: "(with some emotional tone) No human is perfect and I don't think I am an exception. When 2, 3 people say something about you(with hand gestures), there is high likelihood of truth in it, so maybe they are right. I will say that is my weakness" Then one of the interviewere - the lead interviewer actually - cut in "hmmnnn(slow voice coming up with every word) something like you are overzealous to get things done" I then replied, "Maybe. But it's driven by my burning desire to always succeed as a team and getting along with a little slow people can be quite difficult for me. But I'm working on it, I'm learning to understand the little differences we can have as individuals in a team. Because one thing is certain - everyone will want the best of the team, even if there is little difference in style" That was my first job interview years ago. I got the job. However, these days, I hardly prepare tailor-made answers to interviews again. Waht I pay the most attention to is knowing reasonably well about the company and the industry and establish some confidence. For these other general questions, answers will flow almost naturally. |
Hardfact: What if you are asked how much you earn currently, will it be wise to inflate, whether entry level or not?I will not advise inflating. They are most likely going to ask you to provide payslip or employment/payrise letter. Except you're sure they can never ask, like in small unstructured companies that don't have resources or time to go into details. In my current job, during the negotiation (which was on phone after the interview) I was aksed to scan and send to them my payslip and pay letter from my then current employer. |
I believe Messi is the better player of the two and I like him more for his humility and all that, but if I had the chance I would vote for CR7 as WPOTY 2012. I think he did more than Messi this year. I however believe the talk about Xavi and Iniesta being the secret behind Messi's success is arrant BS. Barca has had strikers that were not so successful even in this Xavi/Iniesta era. Ibra comes to mind. |
