Whatever scores we've got to settle, will be ironed out here, in the full glare of all. Nothing cladestine, in whatever guise, form or manner, shall be attached. We, in the Great Ife, win and are always SEEN to have won. Let me address some of the issues u raised. CULTISM- I make bold to say that due to the invisible student unionism that exists in OAU now, the issues of cult activity is near impossible. Great Ife Students walk the campus as free as air at any time of the day. As i write this, i am at a lecture theatre,BOOC, where i am doing my studies. If u ask anyboby who may know the place, he will concur that it is far removed from halls of residence esp angola or moz, or even awo. But i have no slightess doubt in my mind that i may be attacked while going back to my room in Angola to sleep. INCESSANT STRIKES - Apart from the national strikes which OAU is not immuned to, internal strikes have reduced drastically - at least i am yet to see one since my admission. Though there may be lecture boycott in a bid to press home one demand or the other as the case may be, by the students. OLD LECTURERS - I put it to u without fear of contradictions, that OAU parade the youngest Ph.D holders as lecturers as evident in my dept (maths). We have 37 lecturers- 5 profs., 26 P.hD holders and 6 graduate assistants( M.sc). Of course u cannot downplay the importance of old lecturers and profs, their old notes notwithstanding, they make teaching and learning look real than imagine. I will await your rejoinder on these.
I make bold to say too that Ife is the freest campus in Nigeria, at least between 2001-2006 that I was there. Sometimes, I left my Awo room for Pharmacy lecture theatre, or even Agric at times, at 2 am. I walked freely, and we are talking of distance of almost two kilometres here. Ladies walked around without any fear of assault in teh midnight.

Great Ife - where all-round university education begins and ends. Or you think, it is for nothing that Gani Fawehinmi, on his deathbed, said his body may be given to the University of Ife?

Politics › Memo To The Ethnic Champs: How Not To Discuss Our Past Heroes by Jarus(op): 9:58pm On Oct 30, 2010
I opened this thread to pass a message to folks on this section - and on NL in general - that have taken tribal wars to olympian heights.
The spate at which we disrespect and insult Nigeria's past heroes, especially the pre-independence nationalists and the First republic political leaders is very worrisome.
The leaders I'm talking about here are Dr Nnamdi Azikwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sirs Ahmadu Bello and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Aare Samuel Ladoke Akintola.
Some of our Igbo friends have not stopped at anything to hurl insults at Chief Obafemi Awolowo for, rightly or wrongly, being anti-Igbo.
Our Yoruba and Igbo friends have also not stopped at anything to give it back to them. And these two display unity to castigate Ahmadu Bello and TB.
Zik, ironically, is getting his own pound from his Ibo children, for no other offence that he did not play sectional politics. Some of them called him stooge of the Ahmadu Bellos and TBs of the North.

But guys, have we ever considered that the regional, decentralized system of their era essentially called for sectional interest, or tribalism, if that's what you want to call it?

I acknowledge the fact that everybody is free to discuss anything he likes here, but why have we concentrated on the short-comings of these men, and discount almost to zero their incomparable contributions to this nation, mother of all being the struggle for and achievement of independence.

Why is it that anytime their names are mentioned, insults begin to fly around?
Why have we forgotten the enduring legacies of Awo/Akintola: free education, University of Ife, Cocoa House, first TV station etc?
Why have we forgotten Zik's irrepressible media war, through his newspaper, in the struggle to extricate this country from the clutches of colonialists?
Why have we forgotten the TB/AB's austere lifestyle and lessons in selfless governance? Ahmadu Bello it was who went from primary school to primary school in the northern region, advising the pupils to join military. Like a prophet, the man's vision for hsi people paid off, as those children later became Generals and some became Heads of state, setting the background for northern domination in military decades later.

Surely, even with the tribal thing, these guys were far more useful, not only to their people, but to the Nation at large, than the so-called detribalized leaders of today.
I'm not sure these leaders will be proud of those of us that have taken as business insulting their comtemporaries from other tribes in the name of defending them.

After all, we see their pictures standing side by side in the interest of this country. Why do we, their supporters, then fight over them?
These leaders don't deserve this from us.

This is food for thought, guys.

Yes, that's teh ONLY permutation Nigeria MAY not qualify. But with all these Madagascars, Lesothos, Sierra Leone(?), Niger, Equitorial Guineas ineviatbly in our group, we will always qualify.

Bro, i mean am, if we no qualify to nations cup, i no go watch footie for 6 months. tongue
Same here too. Even if we use Enyimba or Kano Pillars, we will still qualify. Except maybe the group is amde up of Nigeria-Ghana-Egypt-CIV, and only one team must qualify, which is not possible, because these teams are always seeded.

Why we will always qualify:
1, Two nations qualify from each group, or firsts plus a number of best losers. If we narrowly miss first position in our group, we will come second at worst, and end up as best loser if second doesnt qualify automatically.
2, And there will always at least 2 Lesothos, Zimbabwes, Nigers, Benins, Ugandas, Equitorial Guineas in our group
3, People easily quote our inability to qualify for Germany 2006, forgetting that we were the best loser in the world, or the nearest-there, if anything like that existed. We had same point with the team that went, Angola, and better goal difference, we only lost out due to one questionable rule called 'head-to-head' which has now been dropped.

So I don't bother myself with ANC qualifiers, qualification for it is our birthright. In afct, geting to Semis in that tournament is also our birthright. Since 1982, it is only once(this year) that we did not get to semi final,

First, I take strong exception to your comment that I use my mod position to promote SLS. Show me a Sanusi thread I sticky, or an anti-Sanusi comment I delete. I opened this thread. I have opened scores of it before I became Mod. Anybody can open thread, mod or member. So where have I used my Mod privilege to promote SLS. That's uncharitable.

That said, the article is not for NL alone, it's even for the larger populace, but as I do sometimes, I have only made a copy available here for discussion and criticisms.
The article is in no way a celebration or champagne popping. I wondered why RP suddenly went underground and put it to paper.

WHAT I LIKE MOST:
FORMER WORKPLACE: That sumptuous free lunch; very nice bosses; networking - met many corporate big shots I had been seeing in papers in person within short time;
CURRENT WORKPLACE: Some level of flexibility & relaxed environment; religious freedom & understanding: one of the very few companies in Lagos you can leave your desk and go and pray; prestige & respect - on the knowledge that you work in this coy;

WHAT I DISLIKE MOST
FORMER: Closing late; inability to pray at right times;
CURRENT: No free lunch  angry

I'm not meant to say this, but honestly, you diminish in my estimation for this statement.
Salafi remains the greatest reformer of this ummah. How can Ibn Taymiyyah be a problem to this ummah.

You have to look hard to see where he is coming from. You know when someone has something to say but does not know how to get his point across, add a little bit of bad grammar and a lot of maps and you have BCR. We should actually commend him for his maps have greatly reduced, posts are actually made without maps nowadays. The new and improved BCR has relegated mappings for now, long may it continue.

Following comments ahead the 2007 polls, that the South-West, through Obasanjo had held power for eight years and as such should not expect power until 40 years later when the other five zones would have tasted power, some Yoruba leaders alleged that Obasanjo was biologically an Igbo man.

According to them, Obasanjo’s father was Onyekwelu from Onitsha in Anambra State and so his reign should be viewed as an Igbo reign.Unlike Obasanjo, he did not react to the allegation

But, dude, honestly, what do you gain in all these tribal rants? All these Awo is bad, Zik is bad, TB is bad, Ahmadu Bello is bad threads seriosuly irritate me.
Definitely, this is not Awoism. You don't love Awolowo more than Bola Ige or even my biological dad, but reading supposed schooled adults thrive on infantile arguments like thsi sickens me.

Guys, we need to grow. Let's discuss their policies, their legacies, their programmes, their struggle for independence, not some tales about who killd who, who starved who.

Awo himself will not be proud of this.
