After the accident, I totally overhauled the car. Replaced tyres with alloy rims, change radiator which damaged after the car, repainted etc, at cost close to 150K.

Car Talk › Re: Have You Ever Crashed A Car? by Jarus(m): 12:23pm On Dec 16, 2009
It happened sometime July this year. I was driving along Lekki-Epe expressway, around Ahoyaya settlement, that Saturday morning.
I wanted to go and check an apartment I wanted to rent, via a Nairalander. Myself and the nairalander had gone to inspect the house together the earlier last weekend, so I wanted to go alone the next weekend. I was almost getting to the place when I got confused on where to turn. I was on around 120 when I suddenly realized I was close to where to turn, I wasn't sure whether it was that turning or the next. While in that moment of indecision, I realized my car was already drifting off the road, with the left front tyre already off the road. Momentarily, I tried to swerve back to the road, I turned the steering just slightly, but before I knew it, the car swerved totally off the road. It went off the road, reversed itself back to the road(somebody said I was the one that reversed it, but I doubt it), spinning on the road. I thought it was going to somersault. I was just inside the car, expecting the worse to happen, put my legs off and my hands just on steering.  It produced a very large noise and dusts erupted. People watching were shouting and some okada guys rushed to rescue me. I was calm, still inside the car. After the spin on the middle of the road, the car slowed down and I unfasten my seat belt, tried to open the door but couldn't. I recalled I was the one that locked teh car, so I unlocked it and opened the door and came out, the car was still moving, albeit very slowly. I came out of the car, unscathed. All these happened within 1 minute.

It was like a miracle. Thankfully, the next car was very far from me and had seen the incident from afar, so was able to slow down before getting to the point where my car was spinning at the middle of the road, otherwise, it could have also hit me. After coming out, I just went to the side of the road and bowed my head on the ground in appreciation.(that is the Islamic way to celebrate happiness-compare when Egyptians score goal in football matches). All the watchers surrounded me and were congratulatiing me. One of the area boys went inside the car(it stopped at the middle of the road) and drove it to the side of the road. I would have killed people waiting for public transport as I was told people do wait for buses at the side of the road I hit, but there was nobody there yet.

The car was partly damaged, but not so seriously given the severity of the accident. See pictures.

JUNE 2009: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN IN JARUS' OFFICE
Welcomers,
It's not being easy here o. There is serious fire on the mountain.
Yesterday was a bad day in the company, as the Group olori-oko released mail showing virtually all the top management staff in my subsidiary the way out, in what will be remembered as a shock of the year. Work practically stopped as all of us non-mgt staff were clustered in groups discussing the massive sack. It was very shocking.
Here are people I had thought were untouchable, people that wielded so much power.Na wa o, so oga pass oga. I now reason with people that say there is nothing like owning your business, being your own boss.

The effect has started telling on us their boys already. The surviving managers, among which was my direct boss, are now unusually tough on us. The rule now is zero tolerance for even inevitable mistakes. Everybody wants to save his head.

Fingers crossed

MARCH 28, 2009: MASS SACK IN CRACKLES' OFFICE
Wow, what a week!
Can you all thank the Lord for me please?!
In my last post, i said something wasnt right around the office
Well my suspicions were confirmed two weeks ago when the Regional Director asked to meet with the whole office in Oxford
He has done the same thing at the other regional offices around us
One hour presentation, talk of restructuring and improving performances
Then the dude nicely linked it to the fact that there will be people paying the price of the whole new vision
And what dat means is COMPULSORY REDUNDANCIES!
Not just in our region, but in the rest of the other 140 offices across the country with the exception of the offices abroad!
THE LOOK ON EVERYONE's FACE WAS NOT SURPRISING, VERY DEPRESSING!
There will be redundancies, there will be restructuring of how the office operate and above all, improved performances for our clients!
Chei, the economic and financial tormoil the world has found itself in, is hitting hard!
For a firm the size of ours, to claim some potential redundancies and reorganisation will happen, no other big wigs outhere is immune!

Anyway we were told anyone who will be affected will know by 27th March, there will be a one month consultation after and dismissal after!
I must admit i was scared, as one of the youngest and inexperienced staff in the office, but i was already on my toes
Sprucing up the CV and checking out the latest vacancies in the industry
I must admit, i even had one or two phone interviews, which i wont now be following up due to the outcome of the development in MOUCHEL
The criteria for selecting people for the chop was unclear, doing your job 120% well doesnt mean you are safe as well as licking the Directors bum!
My boss, one of the few chartered engineers and more experienced HOD was forced out two weeks ago, so no one else is safe!
Panic, gloom and fear around the office
Not a very good feeling and i must say performance level must have dropped seriously this week
I dont see people doing thier job properly knowing they may be facing the chop!
. . . .COPS A 'MACHINE'
To celebrate my survival this week, i went car shopping and i found myself a new baby
Time to step up and join the league of luxury car owners, ya know
I have been through shitloads with the verbal warning 3weeks ago and the reorganisation programme this week, PHEWWW!!
BTW, the office manager who cautioned me 3 weeks ago, got the chop!!
NEW AUDI A4 TDI is the latest baybee!!!WOW!
Summer will be bang!bang!!

MARCH 14, 2009: DAY MRCRACKLES TALKED HIMSELF INTO TROUBLE IN OFFICE
Last two weeks has been crazy maaaaan!!!!
A lot of tension around. especially my department
Had a ticking off from the office manager for a minor offence at work
Basically cracked a joke with a colleague and one of the married woman around didnt like it!
But it is all part of life experience so i have learnt from it, everyone around you could be laughing and singing your praises, but they go behind and knife u
Petty issue which should have been dealt with by my line manager within the team was spurned and instead got reported to the divisional office manager
I am a bit miffed to be honest because it wasnt a swear word or a derogatory or discriminatory comment, so i felt hard done by!
Good thing is, it was only a verbal warning for me and my mate, my job continues and my aim as well as my smarter objectives remains intact
I jokingly said "I AM SWEATING LIKE A RAPIST"

And one of the older woman around the team didnt find it funny!

Oh well, life lessons!!!!
But we thank God Crackles is still welcoming us to that same office  grin

Let me set the ball rolling:

Do you like stickers on your car or you like a car just plain, stickerless?
I like simple stickers, just a two-word message. I like creative or intelligently funny stickers like 'wetin lawyers dey do sef' or 'sshhhhh, a lawyer is passing'
I dislike having multiple stickers on car or shouting stickers or amatuer stickers

Do you have any sticker on your car?
Yes

What is it?
Great Ife - Simple

What motivates you to use the sticker?
Can't help not associating with my alma mater

If not, why?
Not applicable.

Wow, this is the exact problem my Honda Civic 2004 has. It's been doing that for more than 6 months now.
More than three different auto-technicians(Mechanics) have looked at it, yet no solution. We did wheel balancing, alignment shaft, shock absorber, changed all the four rims, changed break pads, tyrods etc, it only reduced slightly, the problem is still there. All of these were prescribed by different Mechanics, and different sums paid, already spent almost 100k on fixing this, but no significant improvement. I have resorted to using it like that. The condition has not prevented or affected it being driven from Kwara to Lagos twice recently.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
FEBRUARY 17 2009: ENTER AJANLEKOKO THE 'FAFFER'  grin
hey all,
well, I work in the telcos (GSM), been there since '01, and I'm now a senior member of the organization I work for.
In my office, I kind of have a really big team, managers and supervisors report to me, so I don't really have to do anything. I therefore spend my time observing the fray, the various physical exercises I mentioned in my ealier post. Then of course I jump into the fray.

Mostly I research and read books like 'the road to CEO', 'how to undermine your boss and contemporaries', 'the mafia manager', and other such 'evil' books.  At my level, navigational skills seem to be more important than academic or professional skills, as I am beginning to find out. So I am busy with the re-education of moi, transforming into your typical average evil treacherous boss.

Right now, I'm out of the country attending a conference, so I don't have a day at work this week. But my typical day at work is spent attending meetings.
Meetings, meetings, and more meetings. Meetings I call, meetings called by others just to hear my honed oratorial skills, meetings we all use to display our latest tricks and schemes and generally rubbish ourselves before our expatriate bosses, who now proceed to fall our hand big time.

The really cool thing about this job be say I am still younger than the average guy at this level. Therefore it tickles me to no end when older guys I run into in the lift and around the office say 'oga' and 'sir'. I feel like taking them by the scruff of their neck and shaking them, screaming 'can't you see I'm just me?'. Ah, well,

Nowadays I get to fly first and business class on international trips, having spent a decade flying economy. Brothers and sisters no be mai mai o! VIP lounge access, no queues at ANY airport in the world, limo service, etc, etc. The first time wey I fly after getting the promotion, I no even sabi how the bed-seat dem dey work, how to arrange the wackies, so I just dey observe one oyinbo as he dey do everything. The guy obviously caught on, cos he kept grinning at me throughout the 8 hour flight. Na im sabi.

Got to run. I'm late for the first session of the conference I'm attending, as a result of excessive partying last night. Will be posting later. Ta!
. . . and TKB fired the first shot at the 'faffer'  grin
so what you do is faff around as a boss?
do they pay you? what are they paying for?

did you say you work for a Telco?
your org needs some restructuring
. . .historian oyb continued the firing  grin
the guy is a marketer, he flunked a mobil interview(since when  mobil dey invite 2.2?), he has been working for over 10 years,

must be tales from the internet

and hes the same slowpoke who was yarning op about engineers
. . .TKB was not done yet  grin:
i saw his 'engineering goof' o bros.
mobil 2:2?

hehehehe, they wanna scatter this thread.
abeggi lemme go alooking too
. . .left, right and centre, Mr. faffer was being fired:
Jarus:
When I also read our ''faffer's'' post, I knew another arrogant bragger had strayed here. His assertions were incoherent. Managers and supervisors reporting to him? Calling meetings just to hear grammar? Flying business and first classes?  But in order not to be confrontational, I just teased him up as a 'big boy'.

We are not saying this is not impossible. In fact it will be nice having a top mgt staff(as his assertions presented him) with us in this discussion, but it is easy to see LIE and EXAGGERATION written all over his post.

TKB has offered the right advice - the organization needs restructuring, if its ever exists.

But oyb has already delivered the final straw, bursting his bubble!
Diggler:
Ps. Ajanlekoko, Welcome to da club, Will have fun reading your fiction
. . .Madam Cristalz blowed hot  grin
Now I ain't pleased about this
Please it's not compulsory to post on this thread. If you don't want to just ignore it. Spoiling it is one thing I really won't let happen o. Why should anyone lie here, I mean, who's there to impress, faceless forum users?
Thread's just for those that actually do something for a living and feel like sharing the ups/downs, good/bad of their work places in here,no matter where that work place is or what the job is.
Mr. Ajanlekoko, I'm nicely asking you to desist from anything negative in here,k? Thanks. Like I said before, it's not compulsory to post here.
Even our respected lawyer was not left out:

Your just a very silly child. Look around you! Can you see unserious people posting crap here. Your mingling with the future leaders of this nation and how we go about our daily jobs either good or bad and how we can help each other suceed and your here posting fairy tales slum dog millionaire lifestyles that even Microsoft CEOs dont engage in.

Pls dont derail this thread. Its one of the threads where serious minded people on nairaland with careers discuss important issues devoid of teenage comments that circulates in your romance or jokes threads!

Mr Man govern your self accordingly
Even the 'faffer' himself didn't find it funny any longer:
Hi lawyer,
No vex o, but, did you seriously write this? I mean, serious-minded people on nairaland with careers discuss important issues, etc etc. Again, make una no vex but, what exactly is wrong with all of you guys?
Okay. You guys win. I apologise. Seriously I didn't come here to brag or anything of that nature. But neither did I come here to defend myself or try to prove whatever to you guys. Do you guys really take yourselves that seriously? I was just having fun, haba. You know, F-U-N, fun. Aren't you guys here to unwind, or is this an extension of your jobs/careers/lives? Come on, man (abi na woman)!
Look guys. Life is too short, and this is after all a web forum, not Dr Phil (not that I watch the man).
Haba. I tire o.

But on a much more serious note. As much as I would have loved to say otherwise, I am a senior professional with about a decade work experience, with the palis and experience to back it up. What I don't really get is, why would you think I was lying? What does it matter to you guys who or what I am? I don't necessarily want to know exactly what any of you guys do, I just like to read from you, and contribute when I feel like. Or do I need to undergo a background/identity check to do that? Abi you people know unaself from somewhere before wey me just go chuck head? I just dey try understand una raking.

I won't contribute to your thread again. Really sorry to have butted in, sincerely
Tollu was not left out:
About time we had a bit of drama up in here.

If Ajanlekoko likes to engage in a bit of fantasy living, guys lets leave him be. We should at least give him benefit of doubt until his bragging gets too much or he gets caught up in a web of his lies, half truths, or whatever this is.

Ajanlekoko
Yes we take ourselves seriously and no this ain't Dr Phil.
Hope the 360 degrees spinning building didn't make you dizzy?
OMG, so I also called Ajanlekoko baba suwe  embarassed
Please let Ajanlekoko the faffer be. He will be a good side attraction to this thread. After all, even in serious retreats, comedians are invited to add some humour.

I'm enjoying his fiction. He is our Baba Suwe here. The name itself(Ajanlekoko - dog dey pursue wolf) is funny.

Let teh discussion continue, while the comedian continue to entertain us
. . .and Cristalz certified him 'official entertainer' of the thread:
If he wants to keep ''entertaining'' in here he is very free to, but there are nicer ways to have fun than making jest of people undeservedly

Much as it wont be a bad idea, it's almost impossible to have a physical get-together in one of these VI restaurants to mark it.
Reasons:
1, Many people will not want to unveil their anonymity, which physical coming together will entail

W2MO @ 1: MILESTONE
As part of the activities marking the first year anniversary of this thread, let's look back and recall some important events/periods:

HOW CRISTALZ AND TKB SET THE GROUND

CRISTALZ: Dang, this place is so serious and ''focused''  Not a bad thing of course, but I think we should have a chill zone where you can kick back, relax and talk about how your day went at work.

Seriously, how many workers here have people they return home to at the end of the day that sincerely ask ''how was work today''?

So in this zone, you can come in, tell us your career field, your job designation if you like (not compulsory), and then you share how work went.

How did your boss totally piss you off? What blunder did you make? What great feat did you accomplish? What project are you working on and how is it going? What things hinder your progress in your field/at your office? Customer pressure (Bankers, Telecomm peeps, etc) ? Funny events that took place at the office?

Come here and share all. And let others benefit from your experiences, and offer you some good advice too. You never know, you just might get that idea you've been searching for in here.  .  .and definitely you will be able to de-stress here  If your story is one you would rather start an independent thread on, even better.

This could work if every worker makes some sensible contribution.  .  .I can't make it fly by myself . So let's share.

*Hols are coming up yeah, but work will still go on*

TKB:  i tot u were gonna start off

oya waiting to read how your day went yesterday.

lets go

CRISTALZ: I wasn't at work yesterday

But you can help us get it started.  .  .how was work yesterday?

I had a consulting backgorund in strategy and corporate finance so when i changed jobs, the pay was gigantum and expectations too are/were off the hook.     .      .     . (thts a brief background)

yesterday, i had a meeeting early in d morning with some of my clients. The company ( an integrated energy coy) hoping to come to the mkt next year to raise funds).
The meeting was long and crazy. the meeting ended and off i went to the office to finish up on some models ive been building and while at it, i got a call from a client that the SEC people wanted a re-arranged meeting and off i jumped into the car with the driver to SEC

on getting there, we were delayed for a while and then the meeting started. it went well and all resolutions were passed.
It wasnt all work and no play cos as we were coming back, awon boiz branched a coded place and took some shots
Got back to work, worked on ma models, and as the day was winding up, i got a mail from my boss about another opportunity in carbon trading.
we had a quick meeting to sort out the opportunities in it for us and blah blah blah

the day went by quickly and later on i checked ma facebook account, posted on NL, made calls to peeps, and then ma trip to the US perfected. that one na tmr nite ooo

Islam › Re: Why I Believe In Monogamy by Jarus(m): 9:52am On Dec 15, 2009
I also have a problem with that article and I'm afraid it originates from apologetic Muslims that try to shy away from facts or try to 'window dress' what is clear in Islam.
Personally, I can't say yet whether I will run a monogamy or polygamy home, but I don't have any problem with anybody that opts for Monogamy. It is allowed, and in fact the rule. But to try to gloss over the fact that polygamy is also allowed, with conditions of course, is where I have problem.

Of course, people do abuse polygamy these days, but that doesn't mean it should be abolished. No. We cannot change Allah's rule just because some people abuse it.

I'm particularly disappointed that a so-called Islamic group can engage in a coordinated campaign against polygamy. Rather than trying to change the rule, they can do better educating Muslims on the need to stick to monogamy if they can't afford polygamy and rules of polygamy, if they must go into it.

I'm also a one-woman man(although I don't rule out the possibility of 2 later in the future, insha Allah: hope my Hajia-to-be is not reading this grin) but I will not campaign against polygamy.

Stick to one wife and live a happy life.
Who says you can't live a happy polygamous life? You need to come and see in my family.

Methink Adebayor was not that bad in the outgoing year. Still deserves a place in the top 5. My however vote goes to Eto'o for scoring 30 league goals and a very important goal in CL final.
