Ever bought a fufu phone before?

In one makeshift stand in those rough parts of Lagos, you price a phone, examine it and pay for it. But in the process of packing it for you, the phone you priced will be exchanged for a fufu moulded into phone, and neatly carved, and packed into the phone case. On getting home, you will realize a fufu has been sold for you as phone. No trace of seller again.

Only in my dear Lagos!!!!

unfaded:
no body has mentioned AZU!!!! on tuesdays punch the man is brilliant
Azu is my No 2. It's a long time I read him though.

My Top 10:

1, SIMON KOLAWOLE [THISDAY]
Although he once uttered a statement that drew my ire, but I give it to him as Nigeria's most unbiased, incisive columnist today. My weekend is not complete without grabbing Thisday to see what Simon has for me.

2, AZUBUIKE ISHIEKWENE [PUNCH]
It's a pity I hardly read Punch these days and I have not been following Azu's writings again. But what I have read from his column when punch was my favourite, plus the few articles of his I still come across by chance, he is a great analyst with sharp pen and unbiased mind.

3, MAHMUD JEGA[DAILY TRUST]
This guy stunned me with his writings and one of the few people that demystified my uninformed perception of Hausa/Fulani folks as intellectual laggards(I'm embarrassed I ever held that silly thought). Combining word artistry with breathtaking analysis, he is one of the reasons I still open Daily Trust website everyday.

4, IJEOMA NWAGWUGWU[THISDAY]
While others write more on the political side of our national life, Ijeoma writes on teh economic side more often. Another Thisday columnist I hardly miss. Although we hold extremely opposite opinion on the Sanusi debate but I give it to her, she is a good analyst.

5, REUBEN ABATI[GUARDIAN]
Reuben is perhaps the most popular columnist in Nigeria today. I'm not much of his fan as he is too radical for my liking, but you can't just ignore his writings. The Abuja land-gate further soils his name, but there is no disputing the fact that Reuben is a very sound analyst. His creativity with words is another endearing asset of his.

6, CASMIR IGBOKWE [PUNCH]
Oh, I'm missing my Punch friends! Casmir's analyses are another unputdownable pieces. There was a time he was writing his column from Cardiff when he was undergoing a course there and his column was retitled 'MUSINGS FROM CARDIFF'. I remember teh piece he did on one popluar Cardiff professor taht rides bicycle to office. I hardly follow him on weekly basis again, but if he's still the Casmir I read till a couple of years ago, he will still makes my favourite list.

7, YOMI ODUNUGA [formerly PUNCH, now THE NATION]
When Punch was my favourite, Yomi was another columnist that made my weekends with his column, KNUCKLES. Very incisive and analytical. He has now crossed over to The Nation (or is Daily Independent?), where he continues his KNUCKLES column, and I still see his writings but they don't appeal to me again, maybe because of teh quality of the printing of Daily Independent.

8, MUHAMMAD HARUNA, [THE NATION and DAILY TRUST]
I got to know Haruna late, just two years ago, but I have known much about him, especially from the war of opinions/history he and Dare Olatunji(another senior journalist and 'The Nation' columnist) fought late last year. He is another columnist I follow around. He is perhaps the most veteran print journalist from the North(He's from Niger state). I like his diction and grasp of history. I also like his independent-mindedness. He writes what he feels is correct, even if he is the only Nigerian holding that opinion. Sanusi, the current CBN governor, doesn't agree with him on most issues and, like Simon Kolawole, Sanusi had picked holes in their writings in the past. His minus is being close to IBB and maybe Buhari.

9. IS'HAQ MODIBBO KAWU, DAILY TRUST
This Ilorin guy is another columnist whose column I hardly miss. Another fine writer.

10. JOSEPH ADEYEYE, PUNCH
A new generation columnist with Punch. When I used to 'eat and drink' Punch, he wasn't a columnist with them then. I first knew him when he quoted the nairaland topic UGLY BRITAIN in his column sometime last year. Since then, I follow his writings. A fine analyst and tries to be as objective as possible.

I feel embarrassed to narrate an experience I had with an aboki okada rider few days ago.

Driving home after work along Sinari Daranijo/Akin Ogunlewe street in VI last week, my brake had some fault. I could still manage it home but I was too afraid to take risk. So I called my mechanic whose shop was, fortunately, close to the place and he drove the car to his shop. It was around 8pm and I was already furious that I will have to go home(to Ajah) by public transport. I called one aboki okada guy to take me home i.e from VI to Ajah. We had not gone far(just nearing New Market/Oniru) before he fell into the hands of Policemen who arrested him for riding Okada after 7 pm. His bike was seized. He started barking at me as If na me send am. He ordered that I will not leave the spot until I get his Okada for him. I was so furious. WTF, na me send u say make u dey ride Okada for night? He held my cloth and started dragging me, swearing that i will not leave teh spot. Because he saw me in suits, he thought I was a complete gentleman. How can a small boy be harrassing me like this? For what? Is it because I am in suits? Is it because I'm speaking English?
While the noise was going on, a commercial danfo going to Ajah came and I boarded it. The guy tried to prevent me from entering the bus and was pulling me. I was so angry that I betrayed the suits I had on and threw professionalism to the thrash bin. I booted him several times and hit him with my clippers, which case I was holding. People were shouting ''don't fight with aboki. They can kill. They don't value their life, bla bla" but I was deaf to all that. The guy fell and the danfo driver moved on. He stood up and ran after us. If the guy had been successful at dragging me out of the bus, maybe I would have died now, because with the way I hit him, if was able to handle any dangerous object, it would have been a different tale now. I'm not proud of such 'corporate thuggery' but at times people think you are a fool when you appear refined.

Ever experienced Lagos 'madness'?
1, It is only in Lagos, that a passenger will not have money, but will enter a bus, and instead of begging, will be cursing and fighting conductor and driver. At the end of the day and the noise, he(and even she) will get to his(her) destination without paying a kobo, depending on how 'mad' he/she is.
2, It is only in Lagos that two people will be publicly fighting and cursing one another in public transport, one old enough to be another's grand mother
3, It is only in Lagos that if a car slightly bashes another, the car driver/owner will stop in the middle of the road, fighting or exchanging tantrums for hours at times, causing unnecessary traffic jam instead of parking to the side of the road and settling the dispute. This is a very common sight, even in VI, and among corporate people too.

To be updated as others come to my head

What other 'madness' have you experienced in Lagos? Share with us.

My past comments on DM:
An excerpt from the article I posted on NL in August 2009. Very busy at that time so the full article couldn't see the light of the day. Still in manuscript.

DELE MOMODU: ABUSE OF COLUMNISM
There is no disputing the fact that Dele Momodu is one of Nigeria's most successful journalists, if popularity, connection and depth of pocket are anything to go by. We can't take that away from him
I don't have any problem with his Ovation magazine, my problem with him is what he writes at the back of ThisDay every Sunday in the name of column writing. If he's not praising MKO Abiola or Mike Adenuga, he will be praising Ghana. At other times, he will be telling us how he flew from one airport to another or how he sat close to one personality. That is all he has to write on serious national issues. The most predictable columnist, if you ask me.
Doesn't he see what other ThisDay columnists like Simon Kolawole, Kayode Komolafe, Yusuph Olaniyonu,Ijeoma Nwogwugwu and Chidi Amuta write on weekly basis.

His analysis on serious issues are at best laughable.

Dele needs to go back to his celebrity journalism. I can point to tens of Nairalanders that can do better, if given the opportunity to write weekly in ThisDay. Let ThisDay stop wasting that space.

Preferred to sit back and watch this debate. Good contributions from all parties, and as usual an insightful comment from Debosky.
Being à vétéran of many debates on same subject in thé past, and my opinions widely known, needless to go over same discussion again. Wé can not all see things from thé same lens. We are bound to disagree. Even, evil as everybody agrees Abacha was, wé still have people that will argue voraciously in his defence. Debates give opportunity to review one's stand and question thé whys of one's opinion, and perhaps review it. That's thé beauty of it. Peace.

Career › Re: Salary Jobs Are Modern Slavery! by Jarus(m): 9:53am On Dec 09, 2009
This self-employment talk, I believe, is overrated.
People talk about self employment as if it's that easy, while demonizing paid employment. Of course, I'm on paid employment and I admit I would have preferred self-employment, in which case I will have more control over my time. But the truth is if I had opted for self-employment for start, maybe I will still at home now, or still struggling with one utopian business idea.

Like somebody highlighted up there, albeit jokingly, the many merits of paid employment dwarf the bad sides.
Where is the capital to start your business? Where do you get the experience if you have not been under another person's payroll before? I just pity those young graduates that rely on those textbook theories and maybe those final year seminars only and talk about not writing CV and looking for job.  You need practical experience in business management before jumping into one. Working under another person provides a platform for you to learn. Of course, there are some people that never worked under another person before starting their business and the business blossoms, but they are very few, the truth is most of these self-employed people were also under paid employment at some time.

While I'm not against self-employment or anybody that seeks the option, I think demonizing paid employment in the name of encouraging self-employment is uncalled for. Self employment, as preached in this part of the world, is overrated.
