mbulela:Me? Praised DM? You obviously meant another person. Or are you referring to where I asked you guys to thread softly with him, that he appears to be yielding to our criticisms? Or just because I exchanged mails with him, I have praised him? I told him to his face that I dont agree with him. What more? You want me to curse him abi? Ever read my article: Dele Momodu: Abuse of Columnism? |
Read thé article over thé weekend, and for thé first time, praised Délé. I enjoyed thé article. Very insightful and factual. |
Also read that Renaissance Professionals' advertorial yesterday. I have undertaken to take thém on in Nigerian dailies on their misinformation. Already preparing an article 'RENAISSANCE PROFESSIONALS OR PROFESSIONAL COMEDIANS?'. Will try and post à copy here when finished. Typing from phone, on bed now, nothing much to contribute now. This report is misleading. It should be internet usage per head of population; i am sure that would make us second from bottomGBAM |
Lagosboy has said it all for whoever has a sense of reasoning, but let me attempt to explain in simpler terms. Aloy is obviously quoting Abuzola out of context. The school of thought is basically based on matters of fiqh(Islamic jurisprudence), not on aqeedah(creed). No school of thought will tell you adultery is legal or that salat are not 5 or that Muhammad(PBUH) is not the last messenger or Jesus is not a prophet. They never and can never disagree on fundamental issues of faith. In fact, in those matters, the rule is simple and direct: What did Prophet say or do on the matter? Schools of thought do not differ on these key issues and in fact, we don't need any school of thought in such matters. However, there are issues that need to be decided on but which are not directly mentioned in Qur'an or hadith. For example, issues like permissibility of sucking wife's b'reast etc. You can't find that directly in Qur'an but based on the understanding of these four highly reverred scholars, they give opinions on those issues, drawing from related issues during the prophetic era. A slight difference occurs in some of these opinions, but for majority of issues, they agree. The summary, again, is that: -No difference of opinion/ school of thought on issues directly relating to creed. Issues like number of times to pray, non-permissibility of prostitution, stealing, etc, finality of Prophet Muhammad's message, messengership of prophets. -There are only four recognized schools of thought. Not just anybody can come and say this is this and this is that. With this, plus explanations offered by Lagosboy, Olabowale and Abuzola himself, I think you should be clear now on what schools of thought is in Islam. |
Jarus has a lot on his desk, but most urgently, needs to prepare a report for one of the big bosses. Already done and being reviewed by my line manager before being released because the info is needed for a strategic decision making and we (me and my direct boss) can't afford not to get it right. One of my busiest days. |
I started pitying Dora thé day shé accepted that post. I still hold her in high esteem sha. As thé mouthpiece of thé govt, she cant say anything different from govt official position, évén if shé personally feels otherwise. Accepting that position is hér greatest undoing. |
'Suffix' me to say that you're also wrong. Thé few years your southerners rule, how have they been different? At thé state level, how have the northern governors been different from their northern counterparts? Thé earlier wé realize that bad leaders are not tribe-specific, thé better for us. |
Tanx 4 dat valuable advice, ajanlekoko. I'll reply 2 d points/questions u raised in due course. Tanx |

Barka Juma'ah. The Imam talked on the need to stay away from prostitution and adultery. |
I don't bank with Zenith, but I think GTB has a very good customer service, only that it's beginning to drift these days. |
kokonets:I think there is a misinterpretation here. I'm not seeking his favour. I'm not seeking anybody's favour. It's only that I don't want to use the usual channel of dumping CVs in HR, which will be treated as just any other CV. I'm sure CBN HR receives tens of CVs daily and there will be a dedicated file where they are being dumped without even being gone through. But the one that has CBN boss' minute or came from CBN governor's office will surely be taken seriously. I have a quite rich CV that is highly unlikely to be dumped if gone through, but having the HR go through it rather than treating as just any CV is the only reason I'm using the Governor's office route. It will be accompanied by a strong-worded introductory letter to the governor, expressing my genuine desire to join the organization out of conviction that it's a platform for achieving my long-sought ambition of being a trained Economist and not an Accountant. I will be absolutely silent on my debates/publications on the current Sanusi reforms. tkb417:I have also heard about DMO and the level of professionalism there and that is one of the reasons I'm seriously desiring moving there. The pay package is still a concern and that is in fact the main thing making me hesitant, but if I look at the opportunity of rising, and find it okay, then I may have to trade the pay scale in the short run for long term career rise and growth. jay bee:Yes, I know there is nothing absolutely wrong in it. Small boy as I am here, I have submitted CVs of guys I trust and recommended them to my Head of Dept, and those that proved themselves at selection process got the job. It's as easy as that. If I fluff the selection process, the SLS I know will never intervene on my behalf. It's purely a belief in my ability that I can prove myself if given the chance. My fear is the susceptibility of such move to misinterpretation, as an open Sanusi defender. Nobody will take time to ask how he gets the job, what will be bandied around is that that boy that wrote about Sanusi in newspapers has been 'rewarded' with CBN job. In fact, when a colleague of mine saw my 'Guest Columnist' article on Sanusi in Sun newspaper in October, the joke he cracked with me was 'this man, you want CBN job abi'. This is teh moral dilemma. You do not need anybody to make you feel bad cos you wanna work in CBN, ive read where u have mentioned it clearly how you'll love to work in CBN even b4 Sanusi was installed. Thanks for this, TKB. My interest in CBN dated back secondary school and I have mentioned it on NL far before Sanusi. Finally, this thread is for the records. By the grace of God, I'm taking highly proactive steps towards realizing my dream, starting from next week. |
I have seen guys move from investment banking into top MNCs, but the time-tested route is the Audit route. Audit companies, especially the likes of KPMG, PWC, and maybe Akintola Williams, have proved to be sound training grounds for people that turn out to be high fliers in finance and management roles in top companies, including MNCs. A close friend of mine joined Shell from an investment banking institution in 2008 and he confessed that majority of colleagues that also made teh recruitment were from audit companies like KPMG and PWC. Apart from MNCs, products of audit companies like PWC and KPMG are usually hot and easily move to other high paying jobs after a couple of years or more in audit company. That said, I'm not too sure whether Dafinone and FH audit qualify to be categorized as part of this 'time-tested route' IBs are also good medium to start, if you can withstand the rigour. For stockbrokerage, I think it's too narrow. Stockbroking experience has little relevance in Finance functions of MNCs, compared to Audit background. So, other factors held constant, a person with audit background has higher chance of being picked by MNCs ahead of someone with stockbroking background. Just my opinion. This may be wrong. |
barry06:I have a very lavish and unorganized lifestyle and I'm very weak in saving culture(pitiably, highly contradictory to my Economics training). If 100k is my monthly income, I'm afraid that wont cover my monthly expenditure, not to talk of saving, so I can't work with that figure. Even with a current monthly income that more than doubles that figure, saving has still been zig-zag. I'm currently struggling with my saving and investment habit(owo t'omo kekere ba koko ri, akara lonfije), but I'm working on my financial discipline. After getting things right, then I can talk of reasonable, organized saving. But my plan is to set up a business while still under this paid job. Different ideas come to my head at different times. I have thought of petroleum marketing business. I have thought of commodity distributorship business(rice, flour, etc). But no serious idea yet. The only idea I'm seriously considering now is real estate, putting up structure in my state(dare not try that in Lagos) and leasing same out. My Plan B is still haphazard and fluid now, but I have it in mind. |
jay bee:I don't know the structure in CBN, but definitely not entry level. Something like Assistant Economist etc. Maybe second level or third. Don't we have private sector think-thank organisations in Nigeria that you can use as a side-step to your ultimate goal.Economic associates is good, but I'm not so impressed with their pay. There are a few others, but I think I prefer public sector. So if having to write to sanusi is what it will take to get to where you wanna be then please no holding back.Having been an insider and seen people that did it and worked, I have been given valuable tips on how to get my papers across to the CBN governor directly, which he will minute on and get across to the Director of HR. But my concern is the morality of this route. |
Ajanlekoko, TKb et al, pls I need your attention here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-361531.0.html Thanks |
It's been long I'm active in careers section of NL, no thanks to the bubbling, once again, of Politics section, my primary constituency. Ever since we put to rest our interesting and exposing threads on 'investment banking in Nigeria', 'career path' and other highly educative threads we had here some months ago, I have not been coming here again. Like I have always maintained in our previous discussions on NL, this accounting job I'm doing is just 'by the way', a career path which is closely related to Ajanlekoko's 'General Track' in his insightful thread: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=261802.msg3743137#msg3743137 I have always known I'm not cut out to be an Accountant even though those ACA and ACIT certificates I'm pursuing are just to dress my cabinet. I'm more at home with economic analysis than those figures. I have no regret I started with a job in Accounting, at least I now have more than a passing literacy in Finance, another value-added. But I'm still inconvenient with it and want to go back to primary field-Economics. I'm considering joining Central bank of Nigeria or Debt Management Office, and maybe in the nearest future, go a little bit international by giving a shot at World bank or any other reputable global financial and economic institutions. I've been looking at this for long and I want to be proactive. I had a discussion with a close friend that was formerly with CBN and he told me how to go about it. But I have a number of challenges: 1, The step suggested involved writing to CBN Governor himself. My challenge is I am a known supporter of Sanusi and I have argued voraciously and written publicly in support of Sanusi(at least four articles I wrote on the Sanusi debate have been published in ThisDay, Sun, Daily Trust and New Age). I am also a known supporter of SLS on NL here and through my numerous write-ups on Facebook. Now I'm hesitant to join CBN, especially writing Sanusi himself, as a matter of principle. I'm sure if Nairalanders get to know that Jarus is now in CBN, all my past debates in favour of the CBN governor will be dug out and I will be accused of being 'rewarded' for my 'ass-licking'. Ditto for my friends on Facebook. This is a reputation issue I don't want to take lightly, even though my opinions and public comments on Sanusi and the current reforms were strictly formed on my convictions that the reform is in order, save one or two methodological errors. 2, The career-pay conundrum. Coming from an indigenous, moderately-paying oil and gas company in the private sector, crossing over to the public sector, CBN or DMO, in the name of career pursuit is no doubt not going to be an easy decision, pay-wise. I don't have much experience( just entering 2 years). I bank on my not-too-bad CV and my strong conviction that, except if politics is put into it, I doubt if I can fluff CBN interview. I don't expect a mouth-watering pay package from CBN as a government institution, but I surely cannot take anything less than my current pay. 3, The Abuja factor. I have been planning of moving to Abuja for some time. My current job is a Head Office function(and our HO is in Lagos). The fact that getting a CBN job affords me the opportunity to move to Abuja is another latent case for the proposed move I'm also considering Debt Management Office as an alternative to CBN. Now discussions should centre around: -Is this not a wrong time for me, morally speaking, to join CBN, giving the fact that I am a known supporter of the current governor? -Does anybody have an idea about payscale in CBN and DMO? -What are the training opportunities in CBN and DMO? -Are these institutions really worthy platforms for going into economic analysis and policy inputs? -What other informed advice do you have for me on this proposed career turn? |
RichyBlacK:I think I underrated Aloy's contribution here. I narrowed "personalities" to 'analysts'. Aloy may not be a top analyst in the mould of beaf, pcicero, Ibime, Ajanlekoko and co, but she is surely a "personality" whose contribution here, through various news she digs up about Nigeria, are invaluable. If I broaden 'personality' further, Becommrich can also not be overlooked here. Forget about the reasonability of his contribution, the passion he deploys in arguing makes him a 'personality' that cannot be ignored here. |
furacao:So you expected him to re-enact his Arsenal form in Barcelona. He has already reached his peak at Arsenal and even before he left Arsenal, he was already on the decline. I never even expected him to do up to this in Barca. Maybe, you expected Ronaldo De Lima to still be banging in 20+ goals. |
snowdrops:Master of bombast at it again!!! ![]() |
deor03:Exactly. I don't know what their problem is. There is a Ghanaian forum called ghanaweb.com, perhaps their most popular. If you're on that forum all they discuss is Nigeria. In fact, it was on that forum that I first heard many fresh news, negative of course, about Nigeria. They even lied that it was Mikel Obi of Nigeria that missed penalty that caused Chelsea semis in the ongoing carling cup http://discussions.ghanaweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=112915 |
