But don't condemn Liz at all pls. In fact, if u have read from part 1-5, we have countless testimonies about people who aced writing with Liz materials. I still don't think it is right condemning one for another. Life itself is beautiful because we can choose from a variety of options. Just as we have IOM & QLife for Medicals, we have WES, IQAS & ICES for ECA, likewise Insp Moshood or Gbenga for PCC. All of them satisfy our needs if we approach them u know? freshdad: I totally get you. However, my point was more on clearing the idea that its okay to "partially agree" and I was only stressing that if the person doesn't have a good grasp on how to answer it that why, just jejely choose a side.
And yes, ieltsadvantage works wonder. He made writing task 2 look very simple Distinct777: I've been shouting ieltsadvantage here since I aced my Ielts at first attempt.
Before I stumbled on his site, I had used Liz and Jay but still got confused. Chris Pell's free materials are in depth, simple and straigh forward. Very easy to follow. I abandoned all others and concentrated on his lessons alone.
Even though BC tried to show itself by giving me a 6.5 in writing, I was too sure of what I wrote and ordered a remark. Of course, it was upgraded! I hope the smart ones here pick sense from your posts and delete all those overrated liz paid videos. I laugh when i see people requesting for it as if its the key while those sending it will be doing shakara like kings. Some are even requesting for recharge cards before sending. It's when they have gotten 6.5 four times that their eyes will clear. Overhyped rubbish. |

wasseynewest: Another ill advise. What works for you might not be fine with me remember. I have seen many people credit Jay and when I watched his lessons, they all makes no sense to me, but I have never for once come out and tell people don't follow jay, that's because our choices, strengths & weaknesses differs. Liz has been a saving grace to thousands since yrs back like jay too. The basic challenge I could say wrt writing is that it takes conscious efforts to picking the pieces dt completes the puzzle together. For instance, the Introduction, paragraphing structures and conclusion for all the different kind of essays( adv/disadv., opinion essays, discuss both sides etc) are all in no way similar. Meanwhile there are so many linkers that will give any student a good ground if used correctly. This I believe is what our people stucked at 6-6.5 shld watch out for and make no mistake or mix up during the exam. And most importantly, this can be easily achieved through constant practice.

pejuhazel: Congrats to those who aced their IELTS and to those who didn't do as well, consider it a lesson, now you know you need to work harder. I would like to contribute my own two cents to the discussion and hope that whatever I say helps at least one person. When it comes to writing the best thing you can do for yourself is outline your answer before you start. If the essay is asking for your opinion on a topic, list out your opinions on the question paper together with evidence to support it, that way when you start writing the points you've listed out will guide you. Also, you do not have to be technical all you have to do is be clear about the opinion you are making. If it's an essay asking you to discuss opposing views, do not discuss both views in the same paragraph. Learn synonyms so you won't have to keep repeating some words. Check out these links, they contain stuff that helped me and I got them from someone on this forum. Remember the race is not to the swift, hold your head up and try again.

wasseynewest: Dear Jasmine, all this ur maths calculations are not required here 'cos I believe many takers are aware of this. & let me correct u that outta the 40mins for task 2, it is possible to brainstorm on relevant ideas for 15mins and still complete task2 conveniently in 25mins. In as much as tenses structure and grammatical usage also combined to aggregate a good score, there is no way you can put them into good use without a relevant IDEA. Ur good idea(points to write on) of the topic will make u express urself freely and more conveniently in no time. I want to believe we've both successfully aced IELTS writing and so d debate shld be how to counsel others to be a success. Since we're on a open floor, let our dear readers just use an approach they are convenient with. Finally, none of this ur references(ieltsadv.,liz, jay etc) failed to stress d importance of relevant idea in their tutorials b'cos it is the foundation & insight to whatever you will write. Let any1 among those I have sent the Liz videos openly counter me on this. All the best to our upcoming IELTS takers. Thats why 6.5 abound. I believe in doing things right the first time, not necessarily proving myself to the class by finishing first, and coming back to rewrite 4more times. I read about this ielts more than you can believe, took 1 month to study the 4modules to understand what was difficult and different with it. Found my tricks and experimented in the exam. Listening: i was very confident and was expecting a 9. I got 8 and i am seriously considering remarking it. Reading: I was expecting a 9 also. I got it and would have remarked if i got less. Speaking: shared my experience here and was expecting a 7. I got 7.5 finally and knowing what happened that day, there is a possibility of an 8 if i choose to remark. Writing: followed my pre-test rules to the letter and tried to apply all the tricks i learnt during practice. Planned my essay before i started. Wrote like a snail. Finished my task 2 only to find out my points were not in tandem with the question (i know i failed task response). Almost did not complete my task 1 (i didnt proofread, check punctuations and all). But i tried in the other sections. I was expecting a 6 but got a 7. Now knowing my mistakes and the rules i applied, i was already looking forward to my next test and bro, if the exam had gone thru as planned (where the God factor comes in), i would have still come here to express myself on how i wrote well and what i am expecting. I will also pray that God gives my script to someone who is having a good day. And i will remark if i dont get my desired scores. So at the bolded, i will prefer to write slowly and not finish on time, and still go ahead to score above 7, than to write like a cheetah, and score 6 or 6.5. |

freshdad: At the bold. maybe but I spent about 8 minutes and still finished on time to review the essay. Cool. But i said thinking not planning Even if you think of the best idea in the world, if you dont pre-plan your essay before you start, you might run into issues. Have you ever been in a situation where you have written 80% of your essay, only for the best ideas to flow into your brain, then you start thinking of cancelling and starting all over? So planning is compulsory. Minimum of 5 minutes for me. If you add 10 mins from thinking, thats 15 minutes. Then i will have 25minutes left to write and proof read more than 250words. Not possible for me but if it works for you, fine. Thats why the necessary tricks is peculiar to each individual and must be discovered by him/her. |

Java47: Hey guys,
Been a while tho.
About the writing test, spend a few hours studying the marking scheme and find out what they are looking for. It's not a thesis you need to prove if it's true or not, but an English test which examines your ability to express your ideas in simple, easy flowing words. You don't need big grammar, too many points etc to get a good score.
Keep It Simple Stupid - KISS!!!
5 paragraphs is enough to get above 7.
Paragraph 1 - Paraphrase the question plus your opening statement. Paragraph 2 - Points for. State one or two maximum in different sentences. Paragraph 3 - Points against. Same as above. Paragraph 4 - State the pros and cons of your points comparing them. Paragraph 5 - Your closing statement where you take a stand.
Conjunctions, adverbs, pronouns etc can add to your points....
Examples:
Additionally First and foremost. Firstly, second, finally... Furthermore, conclusively, in conclusion Either.... Neither Where as,
I'm sure you get the idea. Let your reader flow with your points. Let him or her be guided to your conclusion. Just as I did with this writing.... I think lol
This is just a method I thought of, ensure you study what IELTS is looking out for and practise everyday. Don't give up!!! You are very correct. Keep it simple but use rare words that are related to your essay topic occasionally. The best ielts essays have 1 point per paragraph. Even the results for 7, 8 &9 say so in the comments. So limit yourself to 1point per paragraph and build on it but ensure you exceed the word count limit. |

wasseynewest: Jasmine, first, I believe u know it is clearly stated in Task2 instruction that ur point "must" be relevant. Second, only if u show me any tutor of urs that affirmed this ur claim above. Third, the fact dt u wrote "sh*t" & got lucky with it doesn't mean every other person shld follow ur sh*t. Every oda thing u wrote abt developing and structuring ur ideas are of course very correct but I make bold to tell u that that wch u wrote thinking is sh*t could be among the relevant ideas in IELTS requirements for that topic. I am strongly against u advising people to have sh*t for main idea and develop it to taste good. You sounding too confident about this thing but I'm sorry to disagree. Go to ieltsadvantage, liz, etc. It is not the relevance of your ideas that matter. You dont have all the time in the world and it is not a competition of best ideas. If you use 10mins in thinking of relevant ideas, i doubt if you would have time to finish the essay. Moreover, task response is a 9 out of a possible 36 points. If you get 6 in task response, and get 7-8 in others, you will score above 7. Provided your idea relates to the topic and you can fashion it well to be relevant in presentation, cohesion, coherence, vocab and lexicon, you are good. Above all, pray and believe in God. |

IELTS is a test of tricks. Thats why it is difficult for some because it requires intense practice and study from you. It is not completely a test of your English language skills.
Just like all trick tests, there is a marking scheme which must be complied with in other to pass the exam. For writing, you have to satisfy task response, cohesion and coherence, lexical resource and vocabulary (grammatical range and accuracy). Each of these carry 9 points and you only get the average as your final score of each task, and the average of both tasks as your final score.
So the aim is to learn the tricks ( which is peculiar to each person by the way) that you need to surmount the test and the only way you can learn the tricks is by practicing diligently to identify your flaws, then studying assiduously to device your tricks on how to overcome the flaws, then practicing well to master the devised tricks.
E.g., you know task 2 carries twice as much marks as task 1, meaning if you get a 9 in task 1 and 6 in task 2, your final score will be (6*2+9)/3=21/3=7. But if you get an 8 in task two and 7 in task one, your final score will be (8x2+7)/3=7.666. So common sense will tell you that it is more profitable (given time constraints) to start with task 2 and write it well for more marks.
This is just one of the various tricks you will discover through practice and review. If you dive in with your everyday knowledge and confidence of English, it is bound to fail. |

wasseynewest: Dear Richness, pls u just have to pick urself up. WRITING TASK2 is an aspect that nobody can determine the pendulum d topic given will swing. Hence d reason why we have people finding WRITING difficult. Remember u're marked on how relevant ur answer is. Some1 like me discovered this because in some of my attempts, I find the TASK2 topics difficult to quickly comprehend with. So I believe firstly one need to pray d TASK2 given topic is one that one can easily reason and find points to develop. Hence d reason why its important to try get used to as many as possible Task2 topics. and pray one finds it more easy that day. Pls be ready to battle on without much gap and trust God to surely answer you. @Bolded. Another misconception. You are never marked on how relevant your answer is. Capital NO. You are marked on how you are able to present your answer relevantly. Take a sh.it point, garnish it with good grammar and related rare vocabs, show how the point relates to the topic, minimize spelling errors, structure it well and link the sentences appropriately. You will get above 7. If only you know the points i used in my essay, you will laugh at me till next year. Only noticed i was answering in parallel towards the end and left it like that. |

muvey10: Sometimes I wonder why people have issues with writing.Writing was the simplest to me..first attempt 8.0 while listening was the hardest, because if you don't hear, there is absolutely nothing you can do..if you read the writing marking criteria, you should know what to do to get the score you want for example.lI knew I would get 8.0 because in task achievement I fully developed my main point explaining it critically which would have given me 9 coherence and cohesion- I made sure I used linking words appropraitely vocabulary 8- use less common words accurately-8 grammar I knew I had issues with grammar so I probably got 7 for missing p unctuations and articles-7 which gave me a band score 8.. I was smart, i made sure I got 9 in task achievement which is the easiest, use some high level words accurately, so my being average in grammar didn't affect me. Most people get low scores because 1.you didn't answer all the questions asked which gives you a 5 in task achievement so by the time you add the other 3 aspects you would fall on 6 2.you have too many ideas in one paragraph and don't explain well which ends you up in a 6 so by the time you add other aspect you end up with 6.5 Some people don't even answer the specific question, they start talking abou the general question. 3you have too many grammar errors which is a difficult thing to overcome, you have to improve your English Many people sit on the fence and don't state their opinion..,someone told me in her essay she wrote she partially agrees, i knew instantly she would get nothing more than 6.5 when she told me she got 6 I wasn't surprised..What is partially agree please? It is not about what you think, look for the best approach to write a good essay, and one of the easiest way is to fully agree or fully disagree, when you partially agree it is extreemly difficult to state your point. When writing examples many people use personal examples because the question said from your experience.we need to be smart about things if you want to pass ielts.. use a research or study you read, it is simple and easy to validate your points.when you use personal examples you mess up the whole essay The few I can think of @Bolded. Completely untrue and just your assumption. I partially agreed and even derailed in the course of my essay (check my previous posts after my exam), but i scored 7 at first attempt. Most sites will tell you that tackling both sides of the question shows you are knowledgeable about the topic, gives you more points, and vocabulary. More over, partial agreement is a valid opinion just like agree or disagree. |

einsteino: If this is true? It is interesting how one can try to debunk another person's experience from a distance. Like I said there are already scientific studies that demonstrates this, you can research that. There is a correlation between daylight and our health, many biological processes are in sync with daylight cycles. Moreso, I already said it doesn't affect everyone to the same degree, for some it is marginal and not enough for them to notice... and I never said or suggested that the effects are fatal, I was quite careful to dwell on the science rather than my thought and was also careful not to sound apocalyptic. this whole discussion rose from my saying it has affected me psychologically. In my case, I am not even depressed but I have noticed slight changes when I go days without daylight. I am usually very lively, more than the average person; so when I become just normal and I don't find the motivation to be outgoing, it is enough to suspect I am taking a hit from something. Others may let these slide as mood swings, but for me when I spot patterns and links, I look it up.
"..those of us who work in enclosed offices should be dead by now." I work in a completely enclosed building(no windows sef) right now and at nights, so I am definitely in that category. but your premise isnt exactly logical, I would say why. In lagos and PH for example, the air is hazardous but lagosians and PH folks are not all already dead, they are not even perturbed and many are like Trump who would argue with science. That doesnt mean it isnt true that the poor air quality isn't affecting people who reside in lagos and definitely some would much later on suffer ailments that may have been caused by the air they saw as normal. How many of those people would suffer from it and when? That depends on several factors, and we all do not have the same genetic makeup or susceptibility. That we know chain smokers who have lived a healthy long life, doesn't debunk the fact that smoking negatively impacts health. So probability rather than a definite outcome is what matters.
Generally, our people have a false survivor mentality that causes us to brush everything aside as insignificant. When science said germs affect health, we went on to say "dirty no dey kill black man", ironically we suffer the most from germicidal diseases that some parts of the world already see as extinct. I remember growing up to "Cancer na oyibo and rich man disease", simply because most of our people didnt have the science nor the funds to diagnose anything other than malaria and typhoid... so when anyone "treats and treats", they turn their suspicious eyes on village people rather than misdiagnosis. Today, although lifestyle is a risk factor for cancer, we now know rich and poor, and all races are susceptible to cancer, only that not every patient has an equal opportunity to get a correct diagnosis let alone a fighting chance.
Sir, to summarize, it is not my truth, it is science and the good thing about science is that it isn't dogmatic. So, you can easily google the literature on it, and verify the facts and offer a counter view for peer review if you find it empirically flawed, who knows yours maybe upheld. Bro. I'm not debunking your write up. I'm just wondering if it is true and also trying to wrap my head around the possibility that it might be true. Also wondering how it could have been affecting those of us working in enclosures without us taking note. |

einsteino: 5pm here is as dark as 8pm in Naija, and there isnt any sign of daylight till 7:30am. it is cloudy in the winter here, so when the sun does rise you wouldn't actually get a well illuminated day like you'd get in the summer or naija. First the winter cut my daylight by roughly 25%, then work obliterated what was left of it. I recently started working night shifts, so by the time I get home in the mornings(8am) and go to bed it is barely sunrise, and by 5pm when I leave home for work the sun would have already set. effectively concealing natural light from me, it is much like I live in a world where there is no sun. How much of a shock has it been? Well, I am quite fine on the outside but psychologically, I have noticed significant changes, it is hard to spot what it is. I'm a very cheerful person, but I have felt my ebullience take a dip, and It started soon as the days became visibly shorter and worsened the moment I started working night shifts.
How do I know my suspicions are right? well I didn't until I did some fact finding. The science on this states that our body system has a surprising dependence on natural light; metabolism, digestion, hormones, cell generation, DNA repairs etc all have links to how much sunlight we get and the cycle. For some, the effects are marginal, while for others it could be full blown especially when it comes to mood, so much that there is something called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) caused by shorter days in winter. The most direct relationship between natural light, our mood and biology is found in a brain chemical in our neurons called serotonin: which is responsible for our feel good. Inshort anti-depressant drugs work by inducing increased serotonin generation, anyways the literature suggests the brain generates less serotonin when we get less natural light. So, I am guessing the psychological change is in my boisterousness. If this is true, then those of us who work in enclosed offices should be dead by now. There are times i only see the sun on weekends in stretches of months. You go to the office by 6.30 (no sun), you don't come out of the office till 6:30 - 7 (no sun). It is well. |
