Politics / Students On Rampage Over Alleged Move By FG To Scrap NMTI by jason123: 5:58pm On Jun 23, 2012 |
BY VINCENT UJUMADU, Awka VEHICULAR traffic was disrupted for several hours at the ever busy Onitsha –Owerri highway yesterday as students of the National Metallurgical Training Institute, NMTI, protested an alleged plan by the federal government to scrap the institution or merge it with another one yet to be named. Displaying placards with inscriptions that read; “President Jonathan the proposed plan to scrap NMTI is counter productive”, Those calling for scrapping/merging of NMTI are enemies of the state and youths”, “You cannot talk about technological development and at the same time be scraping the intuitions that promote the manpower. “Orasanya committee goofed and government should disregard it” and “Where are the children of those calling for scrapping of NMTI”. Tension has been mounting in the institution since the Orasanya committee that looked into the structure of government recommended the scraping or merging of the institution, as students of the institution expressed worry about what would be their fate should the institute be scrapped by the federal government. President of the Students Union Government of the institute, Mr. Emmanuel Nwora, said the students decided to protest against the plan to prevail on government not to implement the Orosanya recommendation as it concerns the institution. He said: “The federal government has over the years, been marginalizing us and treating us as mere slaves. We are protesting against the recent report by one Orosanya committee which had advised the federal government to scrap NMTI or merge it with other institution. We are also using this medium to appeal to Federal government to look into the institution with a view to upgrading it to a degree awarding institution. “They say we are craftsmen, but we are not craftsmen. We are students of a tertiary institution and that is why we want the institute to be upgraded to a degree- awarding institute” They also said that they were not comfortable with the certificate awarded to the graduates of the institution, adding that they are not recognized in the labour market. Reacting on the action of the students, the director of the institute, Mr. Joseph Ajamolaye said the protest was unnecessary because there is no official statement or any circular yet to the effect that the federal government was planning to scrap NMTI, Onitsha. His words: “We just read these things on the pages of the newspapers. The committee has made its recommendations, but the government has not carried it out. So, we want the students to calm down because their agitations are being looked into”. He however explained that the institute was not initially meant to admit students, but as a training institute for the staff and workers from the steel industries, noting that the admission of youths became imperative when the fortunes of the steel industries started going down. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/06/students-on-rampage-over-alleged-move-by-fg-to-scrap-nmti/ |

Politics / Ijaw People ‘re Encroaching On My Land, Oba Of Benin Tells AIG by jason123: 12:21pm On Jun 22, 2012 |
BENIN CITY—THE Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, yesterday, frowned at what he described as the encroachment on lands belonging to his kingdom by some Ijaw youths in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State. He urged the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, zone 5 Benin, Mr Hashimu Argungun to find solution to the problem. The Oba, who spoke when the AIG paid him a courtesy visit, at his palace, also commended the state Police Commissioner, Mr Olayinka Balogun for his efforts in combating crime in the state. The monarch lamented that some Ijaw people were stubbornly occupying large expanse of land, even when the Supreme Court had ruled against them. He delegated the Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe to liaise with the AIG to find lasting solution to the issue. He expressed confidence in the new AIG Argungu, saying “from your qualifications and working experience, I am happy your quality is deployed to zone 5 and I wish you success in fighting crimes in the state. “The CP in Edo State is doing well in trying to wipe out all forms of crime, including kidnapping. He is open to public discussion and interaction as a way of finding solution to insurgent of crime in the state.” Meanwhile, AIG Hashimu has promised the people of hitch free election, come July 14, gubernatorial election in the state, assuring the monarch of getting to the root of the matter in Ovia South West and other areas, where people had encroached on the land. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/06/ijaw-people-re-encroaching-on-my-land-oba-of-benin-tells-aig/ |

Politics / Jonathan Must Come To NASS, Reps Insist by jason123: 7:33am On Jun 22, 2012 |
ABUJA — The House of Representatives, yesterday, insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan must honour the lower chamber’s invitation for the purpose of throwing light on the security situation in the country. In a briefing, yesterday, Zakari Mohammed, said the House was constitutionally empowered to invite the President “after all, he had also invited us in the past.” Zakari said contrary to claims in some quaters that the invitation was unconstitutional, the House acted within its powers. He said: “The constitution gives the House the power to invite anybody if we are conducting any investigation, adding that the silence on the date the President should appear before the lawmakers was to allow President Jonathan choose a date that would be convenient to him. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/06/jonathan-must-come-to-nass-reps-insist/ |

basher: My point was, its not only Yorubas they do not employ but they also do not employ SSoutherners and Northners. This does not mean Igbos are tribalistic, not at all. I am just saying Diamond Bank employ mostly Igbos. It has nothing to do with the civil war or money etc! |

samkoro: Where in the world did you get this from?? You high on cheap crack If that was the reason, it means Northerners and SSoutherners are also scared of putting their money in any Igbo owned bank. If not, Northerners and SSoutherners should also be equally opportuned to get employed in Diamond bank but that is not the case. Guy, you need serious deliverance. You have issuesssss! |

From a family member's experience and a friend's experience, DIAMOND BANK is the worst of them all. You hardly ever find a person from another ethnic group. Other banks still employ other ethnic groups even though it can be difficult but Diamond Never!!! If you like, get a PhD in economics and finance, do ICAN tire, you no go still get the job if you are not Igbo. Even if the branch is in Warri, Ibadan, Jos, Bauchi etc. If you are not Igbo and you got a job in Diamond bank, GOD really loves you! PS: This is not to say Igbos are tribalists etc. Diamond bank is just a different kettle all together! |
