all these are good courses too !.
These courses make you a well rounded computer scientist.

The students and teachers just need to look outside the walls of the institution and be conversant with the current trends.

There is nothing wrong with the theories taught in schools if the courses are taught WELL and with the goal of practicalising the theories.
Now that they are not being well taught, the students and teachers are not looking outside the 4 walls of the institution to be conversant with the current trends, would the world continue to wait for us?

Walahi, i wish i had like 200million, i would start an IT skool, pray, fight and bribe my way trun to get govt accreditation, hire good nigerian tuors, provide facilities and a conducive enviroment for learning, and still issue a govt certified certificate, E ma rundown ni!!!!!

u see what baffles me most is i think some groups of people of politicians are benefiting from our backwardness. If u like write and write until tommorow no dey, nothing go happen. While i was working with an NGO (Centre for Development Action International), i wrote a paper and my ED himself took it to abuja to present to one top shot there. Come today, come tommorow, write again, call me back, we are still working on it, well, oga has travelled and all that bollocks were the responses we were getting.

Maybe we didnt do it well or maybe we didnt talk to the right pple. We could be lucky this time if we try.

As much as i dont like saying youths should leave naija, if u want to study real programming, u either get out or do it like we did it. Attend NIIT or APTECH , den be prepared to read ur life out. read, read and read, research well. Join online forums,ebooks club and be prepared to spend all ur food money browsing and overnight browsings like i did. i don get internet for house sha cheesy, thanks to God and java
ProgrammingRe: Need Advice Pls ! by javalove(m): 11:24am On Jul 10, 2008
@Kobojunkie

I feel you and i agree with most of your advice.

We have different dreams and aspirations in life. Even if we have the same, the road to achieving them might be different. Unless I find myself out of Nigeria, i personally will not attend a naija university, but i can pay millions of pounds to attend a 40yrs programming course that makes meaning and in-line with the latest trends of development.

The lens i view life and education in general with (naija context) is different from the lens worn by the socierty. I have been in this probs before, and not just me, i have met hundreds of people. Infact while i was in NIIT, i we had 4 school dropouts in my class. One is in You now, the other is doing well and runs a company here in lagos (Cygress, and he developed www.whogobuy.com).

@poster
try out @kobojunkie's advice. seems a good one to me since u are already in school.

@kobojunkie

won't there be clash of interests as programming might take much of his time?. Wont there also difficulties with his school work as programming is a lonely and time consuming effort?

@javalove
I have to tell you the truth NIIT(don't Know of Aptech) books are not updated regularly and lack enough information to enable theire students develop complex programs moreso they have students for teachers though NIIT is a good start but is not a halfway end. I guess you went to NIIT and after finishing you must have covered the java how to program series book.
I agree with you but its a better starting point for an aspiring programmer. I didnt read java series book but i did lots of research, jined forums and downloaded lots of pdf's. The more i learnt, the more i want to learn. I still have all my books intact, although they seem obsolete to me, i still respect them
ProgrammingRe: Defend Your Programming Language by javalove(m): 9:49am On Jul 10, 2008
wen did u start programming? No hating ooo just want to know. By the time u start real life programming, u will have no business with language as long as the job is done perfectly and ur customers are satisfied. As i java programmer, i have never had the cause to look elsewhere for help. Java gives me all i want. if ur .net gives u same, why dont u concentrate on it, learn more so u can become better.

You wont succeed starting this childish topic. once again hisses

ProgrammingRe: [Opinion] B.sc Computer Science In Nigeria? poo! by javalove(m): 5:35pm On Jul 09, 2008
lol

wud be expecting the eassy. I agree with u a uni education is vry very very important and if i have my way i wud go. But not, never in this country called naija. Its wack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The orientation i have about life is to do what please Allah, my family, those around me and myself alone. I don't do what everyone is doing for the sake of it. I do what makes sense to me. I do what will give me honor in this life. What will take me to places and mingle amongst the creme de la creme of d society. Some pple need degrees to do that. some dont need it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I have confidence in myself and my work seaks for me anywhere i go.

See, i dont follow public opinios ooooo. I live in a world of my own. I set my rules. I abide by my rules. A degree is not the only thing that brings honor. There is no one way to success. See reasons with me plsssss!!!!

People tell me, its good to get the degree, i ask dem for wat? All dey will say is, its just good at least to be secured? i ask dem, to be secured about wat?, Look

I'm educated enuf to raise a family
I'm educated anuf to make a living for myself
I'm educated enuf to speak and be respected
I'm educated anuf to run for a political office
I'm educated enuf to differentiate b/w wat is right and wat is wrong
I'm a programmer and i'm still learning

Rather than enter a uni in dis country and waste 5 yrs, i can spend millions in anoda skool in d same country to enhance my programming skills. Having in mind dat, i m not just going in for a pali, i want to acquire a skill!!!!!
ProgrammingRe: Need Advice Pls ! by javalove(m): 5:20pm On Jul 09, 2008
Why does everybody thinks I wont succeed they all say " go to university and get a good job" why does everything have to be about a good job
same thing fey told me. Anytime they ask me which skool i attended, if i say i'm a student of NIIT, dey wud say "ki lo n jebe?" Whats d meaning if dat. They want to hear lag or lasu or uniben and all.

Lots of pple are scared of change. I dream of opening an IT institue in this country and i'm prepared to pray, fight and bribe my way try Federal Mintry of Education to get it certified. Shebi na plai una want, we go give una,

I dream of a skool whre IT is taught like it has neva been taugh b4 in dis kontry. May God help me,
Warning: If you havent being involded in proogramming desting better try it out first so that you know what you venturing into if not you might regret your actions.

its easy for anyone to put up an argument on this issue but the facts remains th fact. Computer scientists in naija end up graduating without any skill at all to contribute productively to the growth and development of this country. i don't stand to be corrected cheesy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless the sylabuses are thoroughly reviewed by experts and not the usual naija "noise makers", then we will be on track.

Computer Science is not all about Programming. Hence, B Sc. is not a WASTE of time. They teach u the fundamentals of Computer Science
You need to understand that in this day and age, if you are into IT, people expect you to have a skill. Be it programming, networking, Database Admin, Graphic Design and all, Graduating after 5-6yrs without any of the above is a bloody waste of time!!! Niaja is not yankee or UK where u can dabble into other stuffs like the managerial aspect he business.

Then also, most schools like my school For instance (FUTA) gives you an Introduction to most on these programming languages such as Visual Basic, Fortran, C, C++, Java, and PHP (in that Order) and am not bragging.
Lol, if ur son told u, "dad, i want to be a programmer!!!, a professional programmer like bill gates", i'm sure u will send him to a university but which one? FUTA? Those stuffs are jack ass. u need to see the books of NIIT and APTEC on those courses. Even though their teaching is annoying but i respect their books. Dont waste time in a place where u won't get the bestof IT knowledge to make development happen and compete with ur counterparts abroad. These indian guys might be fraudulent in their fees but they give u the confidnce, the tools and an enabling environment to come the programmer of ur dream.

Tell me, a Chap that just goes to learn Java, does he get to learn all the above.
Who told you its only java u learn when u attend these skools. except u learnt java on ur own. Personally, my course contents entailed,

Programming Logic and Techiques
or PLT for short. Here u are trained to think like a programmer. How its done? Well ask ur lecturer smiley

Information Search Analysis Skills or ISAS for short. Here u are given a several projects to work. These helps you to learn to use the net to make searches. Which engine to use depending on ur criteria and so on. The project will then be presented to the class and on a chosen date,

LINUX The Linux enviroment, using the vi editor as a c++ editor and C++ programming

Then the love of my life, JAVA, , , pls dont let me start describing all i learnt here, abeg cos na cafe i dey and my time fit finish for dis side, J2SE, J2EE, JMS, Beans, abegi dem plenty. dey taught us fundamentals too but i beg compare the naija university fundamentals to dis indian guys fundamentals . . u go bow!!!!

Hence, software companies always prefer a computer science graduate with skills of programming.

Well if i were to be an employer, which i wud eventually be (Insha Allah), its the person that can deliver i am after. Who has a better experience, someone who has been programming java all his life or someone who joins it with other things. If i'm to employ a java programmer, who do u think i wud choose?

i'm the love of java. u r the prince remember !!!!! cheesy
