The issue is this - do they pay N5000 for 30 minutes of parking in that hotel? The answer is NO! And he knows the price range for parking from the different hotels that he has visited... it is like going to a restaurant that normally sells cocacola for N120 and because you are dressed well, the server wants to sell it for you at N600.

When Dangote is buying a gold watch or diamond watch he would still look for a good deal... not pay $20k for a $5k gold watch!

No where in the report did they suggest the 5k was for 30 minutes parking. Besides, a dinner couldn't have been completed under 30 minutes so i'm pretty sure it was in the hours rather than minute.

That's besides the point though as i'm not really bothered about the pricing per say. I was more concerned about the fact that he is being portrayed as frugal when the specific example given to me suggests he was just playing to the gallery

This has nothing to do with enjoying one's life because apparently you can't buy a drink in a hotel and expect to pay the regular price but some people are fond of showing off and dangote just showed that he is a business man and not an extravagant man.

Isn't it ironic that the same dangote will probably have watches that cost in the excess of £20K when he is meant to be frugal according to some arguments on this thread

Come to think of it sef, it's not out of place to assume he probably only had the 1K cash on him hence the reason why he had to haggle the price.

There are times when it's necessary to haggle but sometimes it's better to view the deliberate mark up price as a way of giving back instead of handing money over to street beggars

Some dude tried to sell me a hublot (obviously fake) watch on the lekki/epe expressway. I asked him if he thought I wouldn’t know the difference after showing him the watch I had on me on the day.
He smiled and off he went only for me to call him back and hand him N5K (he actually tried to sell it for 10K or there about) . I told him I loved the fact that he was out there hustling to survive rather than begging people for money on the street or worse still engaging in despicable acts.

My earlier comment wasn't about his policy response but about the reality on ground. I still think the CBN response is subpar.

I’m fully aware of shock in financial market terms. It’s simply an occurrence of unplanned event with dire consequences for the market hence the increase volatility (Vix index going through the roof).
Events such as earthquake, tsunami, terrorist actions in major economies, a big miss in eagerly awaited data (Non farm payroal, GDP et al), unexpected decision by the policy makers (Announcement of more QE, interest rate increase/decrease) blab la bla

The projection for commodity prices had always been negative since last year summer considering the Iran effect and stubbornly weekly inventory data showing over supplies In the market.

All these forecasts would have been priced in the market hence the usual retracement from the initial reaction.

Most people may not be aware of the Monetary Policy divergence between the US Fed and most other Central Banks in the world. The US Fed just increased its FFR by 25 basis points and is expected to continue doing so in the coming quarters and years. On the other hand, the CBN just reduced its MPR by 200 basis points. Also, the outlook for the US economy looks better while that of Nigeria looks gloomy.

For those who understand Finance & Investments, you will appreciate that this has increased the Yield on US financial assets while reducing the yield on Nigerian financial assets. Consequently, foreign portfolio investors (FIP) are moving their funds from Nigeria to the US. As they move out, they are converting Naira to dollars adding to the demand for dollars and the pressure on the Naira. These are "external shocks" completely outside the control of the president or the CBN Governor.

The fed raising interest rate wasn’t a shock to the market and must have been priced into the market way before the announcement. The dollar as expected did strengthen but any of such knee jerk reaction must have been met with the continual downward pressure created by commodity prices.

What he hasn’t told us is how he intends to close the gap between the official/parallel exchange rate. I strongly believe the imbalance was created largely due to his lack of policy direction.
