Nairaland / General / What Nobody Tells You About The North/east From A Southern Corper(photo) by jbbalarabe(m): 10:43pm On Sep 04, 2017
WHAT NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT THE NORTH/EAST
(2 MINUTES READ)
As a fresh graduate I’ve always thought that nothing will take me to the North because of so many unpleasant stories I’ve been told about the North.

I’m from Ikwerre (Obio/Akpor Local Government Area) in Rivers state. Nigeria. Travelling is not the hobby of a typical Ikwerre man let alone travelling to the North/Eastern part of Nigeria envisaged to be the most unsecure zone in Nigeria. We have been told about the turbulent nature of the North especially the North/East region.

The North/East region is made up of 6 states which includes Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Bauchi and Taraba and I am privileged to serve in Gombe state.

As a Corps member being posted to Gombe state stirred up a lot of reactions from my parents, siblings, friends and well wishers including myself. Before today I’ve always thought that Gombe state and the entire North/East is a war zone so the people will always be callous and obnoxious. So before leaving for Gombe state I had to call all the pastors I have their contacts both the ones I know, the ones I’ve attended their church once and the ones I never attended their church. And this is after many attempts to get re-posted.

It was like a soldier saying his last prayers and final goodbye to his family before heading to the battle field. From Port Harcourt to Gombe is very far so I slept almost ten times in the vehicle. Arriving to Gombe state boarders we were told that the state boarders are usually closed anytime from 12:00am so we had to park and sleep inside the vehicle. All of us!

Inside my heart I started swearing and raining curses on all the NYSC officials that had anything to do with my posting to Gombe state. The NYSC 3 Weeks orientation camp was the longest and cumbrous weeks of my life though I made so many new friends so I managed to survive the encumbrance and emotional torture throughout that three weeks. After being posted to Gombe L.G.A and all my friends were all posted to the villages so once again I had to look for new Friends after posting!

The next day I stood miserably before the vice principal of the secondary school I was posted to wishing she will reject me because I was told that all the students in government secondary schools in Gombe do not understand English and I cannot speak Hausa instead she accepted me and gave me accommodation and that was the turning point for my orientation about Gombe state.

Gombe state indigenes are majorly farmers and livestock rearers. I met so many farmers who would share their farm produce with you the moment they realize you left your state to come and serve in their state. Gombe state government do not pay Corps Members allowance but my monthly allowance is always enough for me because any time I go to buy foodstuffs like rice, beans, oil, pepper, onion etc I would always meet farmers who will sell it very cheap for me and even give me extra as compared to what is observed in my home state, Rivers state.

Gombe state Indigenes are so welcoming, hospitable, loving and well-caring. I was thinking I will never be friends with a Northerner but I’ve made friends in Gombe state, friends like Andrew Zugumnaan Lucky, Ayuba Lawan Haman, Emmanuel Moses, Hadiya Usman, Aisha Ibrahim Abdullahi, Lenge Nalong Amos, Pam Jennifer, Fatilat Hannah, Joy Pofi, Rashida, Ebweseh Benjamin Musa, Aliyu Safyanu, Mohammad Abubakar, Ibrahim Abubakar, Umar, Umar Saleh, Ibrahim Sabo Abdulrahman, Abdulrahman Abdulkarim, Rilwan Danjuman just to mention a few that made me fall in love with the state.

This is little compared to what my friends who are posted to the villages tell me. In the villages in Gombe Corps Members are catered for, given foodstuff and accommodation, Honestly you will love the state!

Gombe is not very rich but the indigenes will rather share with you than to watch you starve which is not common in the South! Gombe state is safe contrary to the stories we hear. It is already becoming a “No Man’s Land” with people from different backgrounds and tribes residing in the state. For these few months in Gombe I can say Gombe is relatively safer that Port Harcourt, because there are a million ways to die in the South.

Gombe people are loving people and I wish my brothers and sisters would experience Gombe state and start seeing the people differently. Both Muslims and Christians in Gombe have shown me love and affection that is worth commending hence this article.

Politics / Does Buhari Really Hates IGBO'S by jbbalarabe(m): 4:57pm On Aug 06, 2017
Buhari does not hate Igbos.
BUBA GALADIMA, a staunch critic of Buhari wrote this ...

"The entire oil industry is in the hands of the people of the South-east and South-south plus a few Northerners and Southwest people. 75 percent of those who own oil wells and don’t make about it are from the South- South and South-east. There is Freedom of Information Bill; tell Ibe Kachikwu to give you the list of oil well owners. You will be shocked.
.
"The entire economy and financial system of Nigeria is in the hands of South- South and people of Igbo extraction. The Governor of Central Bank makes financial policy, and determines who gets what. Is Babatunde Fowler from Sokoto? Is Babatunde Fashola who is in charge of the energy, housing and road network from Maiduguri? The man in charge of the entire maritime sector from which Nigeria gets highest revenue, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, is he from Kano? And above all, the chairman of the National Economic Council, Prof Yemi Osinbajo as well as Political Adviser to the President, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, are they from Plateau? I am asking you now.
.
"You believe it is the only people from South-east, South-south and South- west that have rights to complain? We Northerners should be the one complaining about Buhari’s government, not the South-south, South-east and the South-west. And my reason is simple.
.
"There are about 557 agencies of government and parastatals and Buhari has not reconstituted 30 of these parastatals. 85 percent of the remaining 540 or thereabouts are being headed by the people of the South-south, South-east and to a certain extent South-west because they were Jonathan’s appointees and Buhari did not remove them.
.
"As I speak to you, nobody from Yobe, Jigawa, Taraba, Gombe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kogi, and Benue has been appointed as head of any federal parastatal apart from the statutory ministerial appointments.
.
"There has never been a Nigerian that loves the Igbo more than Gen Buhari. In 2003, Buhari picked a prominent and illustrious son of Igbo extraction, a number three citizen of the country, the late Senator Chuba Okadigbo, as a running mate. Was that not a big consideration? How many votes did they give Buhari? Zero.
.
"In 2007, Buhari picked another illustrious and distinguished son of the Igbo extraction, Chief Edwin Ume-Ezeoke, as his running mate. In the whole of his village, Buhari scored only three votes. If I don’t like you, why should I like anything that comes from your hands? If Buhari doesn’t like them, don’t you think he should flush those heads of parastatals and agencies of Federal Government who are from those zones and give those who supported him?
"He got the highest votes from Yobe State. Yet, he appointed nobody from Yobe to head any parastatal. What do you expect the Yobe people to say? Should they go and jump into the Atlantic Ocean? They also have the right to agitate. That is because of democracy. In Zamfara State, Buhari scored 94 percent of total vote cast. He didn’t appoint one person apart from the minister allowed by the constitution. If we want to build a country, we should throw away primordial sentiments, hate and spite and begin to look at every Nigerian as one of us or else we will never move forward. We should build a country where we will be our brothers’ keepers."

18+

HE USED AND DUMPED ME

Dear ladies, when you mention the above statement, what do you mean?

I have been in a couple of relationships, and I keep looking for where I was used, I found none....

Now, let's make things clear for ourselves, if sex is what you mean by he used you, just put the *shut* to the *up* and find somewhere to sit, my friend!

This is where it is important to know why you are having sex. Are you having sex for your own gratification or not? If it's the former, you're wise, therefore stop saying he used you, you enjoyed the sex as much as he did! Stop the unnecessary emotional blackmail on the poor guy.

If you're having sex with him just because of his desires and not yours, my dear, stop having sex, it doesn't befit you.

Now, let's highlight the reasons why you should have sex.
1) Because of your enjoyment
2) Because you want a baby
3) Because you are exchanging it for a favour..
And please, that favour should never be marriage, marriage is not a favour anyone does for anyone.

From what I have seen, most ladies use guys more. You collect money from these guys, it's the giver who should be complaining of being shortchanged not When you have sex with someone and you both are the givers and receivers of this sexual pleasure.

You want to complain about being used? Complain about someone taking your money. Nobody can take your body without your consent except in the case of rape. Nobody can make you undergo abortion without your consent, so, even in the case of abortion, you were not used...

In all, have a mind of your own, do things because you want to do them, stop crying foul and blackmailing these guys emotionally. Be wise, no one is using you except you're using yourself!!! If you're not emotionally mature enough to have sex just because you want to, if you are still waiting for someone to say they want to have sex with you before you know you should have sex, then you don't deserve to have sex. Sex is for mature minds only. If after the whole sex and abortions, the relationship doesn't work out, be responsible enough to know that it was the inclusion of your own deeds that brought you to that point. The guy owes you no shit for what you both did! Stop saying you did it for love, I have been in love before and I did not roast my brain for any man.. You too can do that.
Get your own mind and do your own shit, girl!
Politics / EFCC Wants Special Prison Built In Sambisa Forest by jbbalarabe(m): 9:07am On Jul 07, 2017
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, urged the Federal Government to establish a special prison for corrupt Nigerians in the dreaded Boko Haram-infested Sambisa forest in the Northeast.
Acting Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, made the call shortly before commissioning the Kaduna zonal office and stakeholders engagement session of the Commission in Kaduna.
Magu further noted that for the prison to be realized, the judiciary arm of government should cooperate with the anti-graft agency.
Magu revealed that illegal loots were likely to be abandoned by corrupt persons at the nation’s airport and places in near future as it happened at Kaduna airport some few months ago.
Court suspends Senator Dino Melaye’s recall process
He said, “We want to call for establishment of prison in Sambisa forest in order to keep away corrupt people from our midst.
“In this case, the judiciary has direct influence to help in the fight against corruption.
“But concerted efforts are being made by some big Nigerians to neutralise the fight against corruption.
“We must change the narrative by fighting back those that do not want the fight to succeed.
“I remain committed to the fight against corruption, and I commend the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai for encouraging EFCC to establish a zonal office in Kaduna.
“We must therefore join hands together to kill corruption, before corruption will kill us.” Source: @http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/06/corruption-efcc-wants-special-prison-built-sambisa-forest/amp/

Hmmmm
Politics / Exclusive:real Reason France Supported Biafra During Nigerian Civil War by jbbalarabe(m): 6:43pm On Jul 01, 2017
A controversial French support to Biafra as it fought to break away from Nigeria between 1967 and 1970 was not in defence of Biafra’s secession cause — even though it had a humanitarian appeal.
Instead, it was based on that European country’s desire to have access to the region’s oil, recently-declassified war-time memos compiled by the U.S. Central Investigation Agency, CIA, say.
“France supported Biafra because of the oil and ERAP, but not the Ibo revolution,” said Jean Mauricheau-Beaupre, French secretary general for African and Malagasy Affairs, referring to Emergency Response Action Plan, ERAP.
The February 10, 1969 memo quotes Mr. Mauricheau-Beaupre, the equivalent of a minister at the time, as saying French support was merely given to a “handful of Biafra bourgeoisie in return for oil”.
As the hope of Biafra breaking away increasingly seemed lost, the French minister ruled out the possibility of a guerilla war in the region, saying there was no popular support in the region.
“The real Ibo mentality is much farther to the left than that of Ojukwu and even if we had won, there would have been the problem of keeping him in power in the face of leftist infiltration,” he said, referring to the Biafran warlord, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu.
At a time renewed agitation for a Biafran state has reached an extraordinarily feverish pitch, the declassified American intelligence shed light on how external interests largely shaped a three-year atrocious war that left over a one million Nigerians dead 50 years ago.
Amongst nations that took sides in the war, only France, Gabon, Tanzania and Ivory Coast openly backed Biafra, at that time comprising present south east and parts of south south Nigerian states.
The federal government received help mainly from the United Kingdom and Russia, as it struggled to thwart Biafra’s exit.
Both sides received huge cash support, arms and ammunition, and relief materials from their backers.
Altogether, France sent $30 million worth of material to Biafra, and lent then Ivory Coast’s President Houphouet-Boigny $3 million to aid Biafra operations, said then French Minister of National Defense, Michel Debre, and Mr. Mauricheau-Beauprea, according to the diplomatic cables.

Details of French arms supplies remain classified till date.

But the CIA file said on January 13, 1970, as the war wound down, Mr. Mauricheau-Beaupre and Mr. Debre, the national defence minister, decided to remove stocks of French-supplied arms and divide same to French bases at Douala and Abidjan.
France resolved there was no chance of supporting a Biafran guerrilla resistance, CIA noted.
“The rationale for this position as expressed by Mauricheau-Beaupre to individuals concerned with executing Biafran operations was as follows: ‘France supported Biafra because of the oil and ERAP, but not the Ibo revolution,” the cable said.
The telegram containing these intelligence was forwarded to U.S. President Richard Nixon’s deputy assistant for national security affair.
Richard Helms, the director of CIA at the time, said there was “cynicism on the part of the French” to support a Biafran guerrilla resistance.
Later, the CIA noted the war had stalemated with federal troops surrounding the Biafran enclave. Yet, it analysed that despite the federal military’s superiority in personnel and material, there was “very little prospect that either side, by itself, can win militarily in the next six months unless Biafraʼs arms supply is cut off”.
“A prolonged stale-mate or ceasefire could well result in the replacement of the present moderate leadership by military leaders who would be proponents of a ruthless, all out military victory and less concerned about international opinion,” the CIA said of the military ruler, Yakubu Gowon.
It also noted that Mr. Ojukwu, a former lieutenant colonel, had the strong support of a people who seemed determined to win self-determination.
“The Biafran leaders have successfully—if cynically—exploited the issue of starvation to win political sympathy abroad. They believe time is on their side a Foreign powers and interests
The CIA said the British government supported the federal military government with “non-sophisticated arms sales”, while the Soviets became a major arms suppliers at the outset of the war.
The U.S. on its part embargoed arms sales to both sides, in a war that also created opportunity for influence peddling between the west and the east.
“The FMG gives frequent assurances that the Soviet involvement is only a matter of wartime necessity and portends no political realignment of Nigeriaʼs traditional pro-Western stance. We have no evidence that the FMG has thus far granted any significant political concessions in return for Soviet arms. However, Soviet prestige and acceptance has increased,” the CIA wrote.
“Soviet intentions are unclear. They probably consider Nigeria a target of opportunity to extend their influence at Western expense and relatively little cost to themselves. Whether requested or not, they have not gone beyond the provision of military equipment, including aircraft and the training of pilots.”
“Although disappointed and perhaps somewhat embarrassed–at slow FMG military progress, they appear willing to continue their support in the belief that prolonged fighting and FMG frustrations will increase the political value of their help,” the report said of Russia.
At the Organization of African Unity (OAU), all but four members (Ivory Coast, Gabon, Tanzania, Zambia, that recognized Biafra in 1968), shifted support to the Federal Military Government by 1969 and regarded the civil war as an internal question which should be solved within an African (OAU) frame-work.
For the United Nations, there was no role for it in the war, beyond the participation by UNICEF and other specialized agencies in the relief effort.
The U.S. said it regarded the civil war as primarily a Nigerian and African problem, but continued to recognise the FMG; imposed an arms embargo on both sides; contributed $30 million to the international relief effort; voiced political support for a negotiated settlement in the context of one Nigeria with workable safeguards for Ibo protection.
The French decision to supply arms clandestinely to Biafra probably saved the rebellion when it appeared near defeat last summer, the CIA cable noted, saying President De Gaulleʼs motives were mixed.
First, France hoped to acquire British and American oil concessions in the oil-rich Niger Delta, and could have been motivated by the possibility of the breaking up of an Anglophone federation which could have exerted a powerful influence in a West Africa it had strong interests.
“So far, the French have stopped short of outright recognition. They deny giving arms. We simply do not know how far the French are prepared to go in support of Biafran independence,” the U.S. said.
Ojukwu’s first destination revealed
Mr. Ojukwu fled as the stronghold city of Enugu fell under federal control. The CIA said his first stop was Gabon, contrary to the commonly known fact that he travelled to Ivory Coast.
In Libreville, the Gabonese capital, Mr. Ojukwu lived in a private villa and told French agents he departed Nigeria according to the wishes of his general staff, Phillip Effiong, and to spare his people from extermination.
Christopher Onyekwelu, Biafran finance representative in Europe and brother-in- law of Mr. Ojukwu, was given a round-trip ticket to Libreville on January 13 by the French general secretariat for African and Malagasy Affairs in Paris.
He was to join Mr. Ojukwu in Libreville a day later. Separately, C.C. Mojekwu, Biafra’s representative in Lisbon, Portugal, also departed by air for Libreville.
Later, French secretary general for African and Malagasy Affairs, Jacques Foccart, left Yaoundé where he was attending Cameroon’s tenth anniversary celebrations to meet with Mr. Ojukwu in Libreville. Agriculture / Nigeria To Supply Walmart Cashew Nuts Valued At $7 Billion Annually. by jbbalarabe(m): 9:57am On Jun 30, 2017
Nigeria is set to supply 130,000 tonnes of roasted cashew nuts valued at $7 billion to Walmart Super Market chain in the United States of America, USA.
This was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbe, on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council at the State House Presidential Villa Abuja.
“But the other good news is cashew nuts. These things look small, but we are in conversations with Walmart, the biggest supermarket chain in the U.S., they came here and asked us to roast cashew nuts for them
“Their demand is a 130,000 tonnes of cashew nuts per annum, the total value is $7 billion,” he said.
Mr. Ogbe said what Nigeria currently does is ship the nuts to Vietnam, who in turn roast and sell to the U.S.
“This year we are going to create six cashew processing factories in Nigeria, one each to be cited in Enugu, Imo, Benue, Kogi, Kwara and Oyo states. These are the cashew belt for now,” he said.
The minister said these options are coming now because Nigeria is beginning to focus on non-oil export.
“Once you can diversify your economy, if something goes wrong in one sector you can hang on to the other,” he said.
Mr. Ogbe had earlier said Nigeria will formally flag off the export of yam to the UK on Thursday.
He said the government is also looking to use yam for industrial starch for the textile industry and for export to China.
He added that India is also asking Nigeria for the supply of beans. He said the beans market in India alone is about $100 billion.
“When the Indian Vice President came here, he asked me to visit so we could talk, so the market in Agric is huge, the prospects are large; it’s about improving on our strategies at home and getting all our states to get involved, not all of them are doing what they ought to be doing now,” the minister said.

Technology Market / The World’s Most Valuable Resource Is No Longer Oil, But by jbbalarabe(m): 5:30pm On Jun 27, 2017
A NEW commodity spawns a lucrative fast-growing industry, prompting antitrust regulators to step in to restrain those who control its flow. A century ago, the resource in question was oil. Now similar concerns are being raised by the giants that deal in data, the oil of the digital era. These titans—Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft—look unstoppable. They are the five most valuable listed firms in the world. Their profits are surging: they collectively racked up over $25bn in net profit in the first quarter of 2017. Amazon captures half of all dollars spent online in America. Google and Facebook accounted for almost all the revenue growth in digital advertising in America last year.
Such dominance has prompted calls for the tech giants to be broken up, as Standard Oil was in the early 20th century. This newspaper has argued against such drastic action in the past. Size alone is not a crime. The giants’ success has benefited consumers. Few want to live without Google’s search engine, Amazon’s one-day delivery or Facebook’s newsfeed. Nor do these firms raise the alarm when standard antitrust tests are applied. Far from gouging consumers, many of their services are free (users pay, in effect, by handing over yet more data). Take account of offline rivals, and their market shares look less worrying. And the emergence of upstarts like Snapchat suggests that new entrants can still make waves.
But there is cause for concern. Internet companies’ control of data gives them enormous power. Old ways of thinking about competition, devised in the era of oil, look outdated in what has come to be called the “data economy” A new approach is needed.
Quantity has a quality all its own
What has changed? Smartphones and the internet have made data abundant, ubiquitous and far more valuable. Whether you are going for a run, watching TV or even just sitting in traffic, virtually every activity creates a digital trace—more raw material for the data distilleries. As devices from watches to cars connect to the internet, the volume is increasing: some estimate that a self-driving car will generate 100 gigabytes per second. Meanwhile, artificial-intelligence (AI) techniques such as machine learning extract more value from data. Algorithms can predict when a customer is ready to buy, a jet-engine needs servicing or a person is at risk of a disease. Industrial giants such as GE and Siemens now sell themselves as data firms.<br>
<br>
This abundance of data changes the nature of competition. Technology giants have always benefited from network effects: the more users Facebook signs up, the more attractive signing up becomes for others. With data there are extra network effects. By collecting more data, a firm has more scope to improve its products, which attracts more users, generating even more data, and so on. The more data Tesla gathers from its self-driving cars, the better it can make them at driving themselves—part of the reason the firm, which sold only 25,000 cars in the first quarter, is now worth more than GM, which sold 2.3m. Vast pools of data can thus act as protective moats.<br>
<br>
Access to data also protects companies from rivals in another way. The case for being sanguine about competition in the tech industry rests on the potential for incumbents to be blindsided by a startup in a garage or an unexpected technological shift. But both are less likely in the data age. The giants’ surveillance systems span the entire economy: Google can see what people search for, Facebook what they share, Amazon what they buy. They own app stores and operating systems, and rent out computing power to startups. They have a “God’s eye view” of activities in their own markets and beyond. They can see when a new product or service gains traction, allowing them to copy it or simply buy the upstart before it becomes too great a threat. Many think Facebook’s $22bn purchase in 2014 of WhatsApp, a messaging app with fewer than 60 employees, falls into this category of “shoot-out acquisitions” that eliminate potential rivals. By providing barriers to entry and early-warning systems, data can stifle competition.
Who ya gonna call, trustbusters?

The nature of data makes the antitrust remedies of the past less useful. Breaking up a firm like Google into five Googlets would not stop network effects from reasserting themselves: in time, one of them would become dominant again. A radical rethink is required—and as the outlines of a new approach start to become apparent, two ideas stand out.

The first is that antitrust authorities need to move from the industrial era into the 21st century. When considering a merger, for example, they have traditionally used size to determine when to intervene. They now need to take into account the extent of firms’ data assets when assessing the impact of deals. The purchase price could also be a signal that an incumbent is buying a nascent threat. On these measures, Facebook’s willingness to pay so much for WhatsApp, which had no revenue to speak of, would have raised red flags. Trustbusters must also become more data-savvy in their analysis of market dynamics, for example by using simulations to hunt for algorithms colluding over prices or to determine how best to promote competition (see Free exchange).
The second principle is to loosen the grip that providers of online services have over data and give more control to those who supply them. More transparency would help: companies could be forced to reveal to consumers what information they hold and how much money they make from it. Governments could encourage the emergence of new services by opening up more of their own data vaults or managing crucial parts of the data economy as public infrastructure, as India does with its digital-identity system, Aadhaar. They could also mandate the sharing of certain kinds of data, with users’ consent—an approach Europe is taking in financial services by requiring banks to make customers’ data accessible to third parties.

Rebooting antitrust for the information age will not be easy. It will entail new risks: more data sharing, for instance, could threaten privacy. But if governments don’t want a data economy dominated by a few giants, they will need to act soon.

Politics / Great Victory For Nigeria As Father Of The North Breaks His Silence Ahead Oct1 by jbbalarabe(m): 12:27pm On Jun 23, 2017
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has finally broken his silence on the quit notice order given by a coalition of Northern Arewa youths.
Speaking when he hosted Leaders of resident communities, Heads of Security Agencies, Civil Society Groups, and Media Practitioners, to a Ramadan break fast dinner at his Palace in Sokoto, the Monarch maintained that no matter the call for secession, Nigerians would remain one big family.

His words: “No matter what anybody can say, no matter what is happening, we are still one big family.
“Let’s sit down, discuss these issues. So that together we can find out what really went wrong. Let us retrace our steps and see where we started getting things wrong, so that we can find the way of sorting things out.
“It is a simple thing, because we are all eager to live in peace, united, and to have a morally upright country, based on justice, equity, and above all, fear of God
“I am totally disappointed over what is happening. I like challenges, and we are in a challenging period, and we will take it up. We will continue preaching love, impartiality, respect, and unity, in the country.”

Urging Nigerians to shun suspicion and respect one another, the Sultan called on elders to caution their youths.
He said: “If you see your son misbehaving and decide to keep quiet, it means you are supporting him, because no father wants to see his son going astray, without doing anything.”
He added: “We don’t have to resort to uncomplimentary remarks or violence to make our demands heard, because insecurity doesn’t help anybody. No violence pays anybody, or resolves any problem.
“We should stop looking down on others, unless we want to lift them up. We should understand ourselves and respect one another

Crime / The Story Of The Man Behind The Capture Of The Billionaire Kidnapper ,abba Kari. by jbbalarabe(m): 3:25pm On Jun 20, 2017
Abba Kyari A 1997 Geography graduate of the University of Maiduguri, Abba grew up in Maiduguri, Borno State, where he attended Government Primary and Secondary Schools in Maiduguri. He did his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Akwa Ibom State in 1998 and joined the Nigeria Police Force as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 2000. 16 years after, he has earned for himself the reputation of a diligent, no-nonsense and intelligence officer, such that the police authorities and politicians are proud to have and work with. And from get go, he demonstrated to his bosses that he knew why he joined the force, and has kept at it.

After completing his training in the Police Academy WudilKano, Kyari was posted to Adamawa State where he served in Song, Girei and Numan Local Government Area with remarkable successes in crime bursting. He stood out when he led the arrest of a notorious armed robber called, ‘Ndagi’ a.k.a Spirit. Spirit held Numan, the third biggest town in Adamawa State hostage for several years before his eventual arrest. From then, there was no looking back for this intelligent officer with a sharp investigative mind and sometimes deadly courage.

Kyari joined the Police Mobile Force, popularly known as Mopol in 2005 and was there for about five years until his posting to Lagos Command October in 2010. He was deployed as the second in command (2/IC) to SARS and later became the OC SARS on January 15, 2011. It was said that the then Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, who decorated him with several awards, resisted ceaseless attempts by the Police high Command to have Kyari redeployed out of Lagos. This was on account of his amazing achievements in combating the menace of armed robbery and kidnapping in Lagos.

Kyari has a long litany of exploits under his belt. He was instrumental in the arrest of the most notorious armed robber in the South West, Mr. Abiodun Egunjobi, otherwise known as Godogodo. Godogodo was arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State, with some of his gang members. SARS recovered 42 AK47 rifles from the gang. Godogodo confessed to have killed over 150 Nigerians, including over 50 policemen during his 10 years reign as the kingpin of South West armed robbers.

There was also the arrest of Benjamin Osinachi a.k.a China and his entire gang of kidnappers based in Ghana, but operated in Nigeria. Their victims included a sitting High Court Judge, a sitting local government chairman, many expatriates, amongst others. China and his gang members held South West residents by the jugulars for long. But Kyari with his men, were said to have deployed, “Advanced Technology and brought the kidnappers down.” Several AK47 rifles and thousands of ammunitions were recovered from the gang.

The defeat of Mr. Andrew and his gang of deadly kidnappers in Igando area of Lagos metropolis was spearheaded by Kyari and his men. SARS recovered 12 AK47 rifles, GPMGs and rocket launchers from the gang. Also during his tenure in Lagos, SARS arrested Chinansa and gang in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos. The SARS men recovered 11 AK47 rifles, rocket launchers and GPMGs from them.

There was also the shocking arrest of the General Overseer of a church located at Ejigbo. The General Overseer was part of the gang of robbers that attacked the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The gang was later discovered to have operated at Ogun, Kwara and Rivers States. When they were eventually arrested, police recovered five AK47 rifles and GPMGs.

Kyari was also instrumental in the arrest of the kidnappers of former Minister of Finance, Dr. Okonjo Iweala’s mother. The kidnappers used to operate in Delta, Edo and Port Harcourt. This gang killed the former deputy Governor of Anambra State and kidnapped the wife of a sitting Supreme Court Judge.

Kyari and his men also arrested the kidnappers that abducted Dangote’s cousin. Another gang that kidnapped a British citizen, Mr. Dickson Lee, along the International Airport Road, was also defeated. The Briton was kidnapped moments after landing in Nigeria. There was the arrest of Obinna in Onitsha. Obinna was the most notorious sponsor and kingpin of robbers who specialized in hijacking trailers carrying containers. SARS has also in its feather, the arrest of Emmanuel aka Arab. Arab and his gang members were described as deadly. 12 AK 47 rifles, including four AK47 rifles belonging to Policemen they killed during bank robbery in Kwara State were recovered from them. Kyari and his men led the rescue of a young Kwara female model in Delta State. The policeman and his men also led in the rescue operation of Alhaji Fashola, owner of Kings Petroleum in Isheri Oshun, Lagos.

Lagos residents cannot forget the arrest of the nanny who kidnapped three boys belonging to same parents. The kids were called ‘the Orekoyas kids’. The nanny was arrested within three days that the case was transferred to Kyari and his men. Few days before Kyari got his posting letter to Abuja, he led the arrest of Lekki armed robbers who attacked the First City Monument Bank (FCMB). They killed three policemen and a girl who was hawking fish, carted away money and escaped through the waterways.

Splintered members from the Lekki bank robbery gang recently attacked banks at Ijede and Ogolonto areas of Ikorodu, Lagos. They escaped, as usual, through the waterways and Kyarideployed his Technology and arrested four of the Ikorodu bank robbers.

Kyari has received a lot of awards to mark his achievements. But to mention a few; there’s the IGP Commendation Award for Courage 2012, 2013, 2014. Governors Award for Gallantry, Leadership and Service excellence 2011, 2012, 2013. There’s Commissioner of Police Commendation Award for Courage 2011. Best Anti- Crime Police Officer in West Africa from Security Watch Africa, Star Award from CRAN 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

A very shy guy, Abba wouldn’t talk about his work and how he does it, but his men and people who have come across him would attest to the fact that his best attribute is that he sees himself as a Team Leader and not a boss in the discharge of his duties and co-ordination of men and resources to fight crime and criminals. One of his boys told me that” “OC is a whiz kid. He is too much. He understands technology and uses it to track down criminals. Also, he is a leader. He motivates us his men. We eat and drink with him. He attends our weddings, birthdays and naming ceremonies of our children and funeral of our relatives. In short, he is like a brother to us and leads from the front. He is always there for us and even teaches us how to key into technology while doing our work. In short, the OC is wonderful.”

So, here’s a brilliant officer who is also a great leader, who is ever ready to learn and teach others so the war against crime and criminals may succeed. No wonder the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, like his predecessor, was full of praises for Abba Kyari as he broke the news to Lagosians of the rescue of the three female students and the arrest of their kidnappers. He couldn’t be headed anywhere else but the top having stayed on top of his game from the moment he joined the Police.

May Almighty Allah continues to guide and protect this fine officer, #police is your friend.

Politics / The Real Truth About The Removal Of CRK And The Political Lies. by jbbalarabe(m): 9:25am On Jun 20, 2017
The Nigerian government revised the 9- Year Basic Education Curriculum in 2012 in line with global best practices as in Kenya -7 subject, Tanzania- 8 subject, United States of America -6 subject, Malaysia and Indonesia -9 subject offerings. The curriculum revision process involved identification and grouping of related disciplines such as Christian Religious Studies/ Islamic Studies, Social Studies, Civic Education, and Security Education to create a new composite or cluster of Revised BEC subject called Religion and National Values. Key concepts in the former curricula now form integrating threads for organizing the contents of the new subject into a coherent whole. The Revised BEC comprises ten (10) subjects namely:

1. English Studies,
2. Mathematics,
3. Basic Science and Technology,
4. Religion and National Values,
5. Cultural and Creative Arts
6. Business Studies,
7. Nigerian Languages,
8. Pre-vocational Studies,
9. French,
10. Arabic.

As pointed out above, these revisions were made in 2012 when Goodluck Jonathan was the president of Nigeria. It is therefore very surprising that some men of God who are drawn to sensationalism are accusing the Buhari government of being the architects of this revision and accusing same of planning to Islamize Nigeria. How can you accuse a man who became president in 2015 of being responsible for what was designed and implemented in 2012? If only this category of ”men of God” can just stay out of politics and face their calling as preachers, much of the tension that they create with their utterances will be avoided. But even if they must speak, it behooves on them to do their research well before making utterances.

Curiously no single Imam cried out when the federal government headed by a supposed Christian did this review. Neither did CAN or any pastor for that matter say anything about it. All of a sudden three years later everyone seems to have woken up from their slumber. This is really very pathetic. From the foregoing, it looks like these men of God seem to believe that it is what students learn at school that predominantly makes them good Christians or not but I beg to differ. The school syllabus for Religious studies only contains bible stories or historical events in the bible. The subject only made us to cram and recite the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer and the golden rule. The real Christians principles that we hold dear today were taught in church and in our homes.

The school can never be a substitute to the church and the family. So instead of prying into politics and school curricular these men of God should focus attention on using the church and the family unit as the bedrock of building up children because when it is all said and done, a child is a combination of the training he gets both at school and at home. We cannot control what happens at school but we can control what happens in church and at home. The earlier we start doing more of the training at home and in church the better. Those who want to argue can argue. I don talk my own. Let us stop making the church a part of our victim mentality. Nobody can Islamize Nigeria.
