Politics / Five Top Inaccuracies And Fallacies Of Gbadebo Vivour-rhodes’ Rhetoric by JerryLekki: 12:45pm On Mar 17, 2023
Campaigns for the 2023 governorship elections in Lagos are now done and it was as feverish as it was vociferous. Various rhetoric were deployed by many of the parties, with some unfortunately going below the acceptable level of clannishness in civilized circles.

One interesting thing of note is the rhetoric of the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Vivour-Rhodes (GRV), a returnee millennial, who continued in his rhetoric that he deployed in his previous failed shots at getting into public office, first at KOWA party in 2017, and PDP in 2019 and 2022.

It has become imperative to point out some inaccuracies in his narratives, as they continue to gain a wider audience amongst those who lack knowledge of the proper Yoruba, Lagos Island, and Lagos State history for posterity.
Here are five of such:

1) Lagos Island history is not Lagos State history: Hearing GRV talk about the history of Lagos while talking about his family history, you will think he is talking about the history of Lagos state. Lagos Island and its environs were the Federal Capital Territory. Everything from Surulere-Jibowu axis were in the Western Region until 1967 when Lagos State was created. If you compare the land size of the FCT in the Lagos State, it is roughly 10%. Thus, Lagos Island is just one of the five divisions that make up Lagos State. So, Awolowo and Akintola developed most of Lagos, not FG.

2) Aworis and Isale Eko are not the only Lagosians of Lagos state: Given that Western Region got up to Yaba, there are a spread of other Yorubas that are not Aworis in the new Lagos State. In fact, there is no ethnic group present in Ogun State that doesn’t have ancestral lands in Lagos State. Thus, a citizen of Lagos can be simultaneously a citizen of Ogun or even Ondo State, given his or her relationship with their ethnic headquarters. An Awori man from Ijanikin is also a citizen of Ado Odo in Ogun State, as that is the Awori people headquarters. Same relationship exists across board. Have you ever wondered why there is an Ikoyi in Lagos and also Osun states? Where Abule Egba got his name? Jibowu is an Egba name for instance. Erelu of Lagos (Island) holds a high aboriginal title in Abeokuta. Madam Efunroye Tinubu was Iyalode of Abeokuta while being a top citizen of Lagos Island. Blame the Military for separating people across state lines

3) He is not an indigenous Lagosian but a descendant of slaves absorbed into Lagos: GRV ancestors are returnee slaves who got rescued in the 1800s after the abolition of transatlantic slavery. Many of the people rescued could not trace their original homestead (which may have been destroyed due to the various internecine wars) and thus continued with their acquired foreign names. Many of the ones who could trace their origins reverted to their family names. So many of the Lagos Island folks who bear foreign names are of this stock. Because their forbears had foreign education earlier than others, they form the bulwark of the people agitating for self-rule. Doesn’t mean that they have higher pedigree than the Aromires, Dosunmus, Onirus etc who they met on the Island.

4) Lateef Jakande origin is from Kwara state: Listening or reading GRV’s tirades against people and politicians of Lagos state with ancestral lands in other Yoruba states, you will see that he never mentions Baba Kekere, Alhaji Lateef Jakande. In fact, he always reserves a section of his tirades against Yorubas in Lagos for special accolades on the best governor in the history of Nigeria (my opinion). He will conveniently leave out the fact that Baba is of the Igbomina stock in present Kwara State. Thus, one begins to wonder who his grouse is with. My suspicion is that some people feel slighted that due to their progenitors being earliest independence advocates, they should be running Lagos state.

5) Other Nigerians outside the Yorubas have contested and won elections in Lagos and appointed into positions: To the best of my knowledge, people of other ethnic nationalities aside Yorubas have been elected and appointed in Lagos State without any significant untowardness, but hearing GRV say it (or post it on social media), you would think that Honourable Rita Orji doesn’t exist. She has represented Lagos State at the House of Representatives and is in Labour Party with him. She’s not the only one. Many others have represented Lagos at the national and state house of assembly. There are also people like Joe Igbokwe and Ben Akabueze who have served in various appointed capacities in Lagos. Why does he never mention any non-Yorubas when he is listing the names of successful Lagos politicians whose origins are not indigenous Lagos? E get why.

Unfortunately, I would not be voting in Lagos State this election cycle. I enjoin every stakeholder to ensure that the election holds in a free and fair manner devoid of intimidation and violence.

Foreign Affairs / Throwback: France's Macron Blasts Guinea's Conde For Power Grab by JerryLekki: 9:58pm On Sep 05, 2021
In light of today's coup in Guinea and some insinuations that the French authorities have a hand in it, I remembered this news piece and decided to share. Given that the coup leader is said to be a former French Legionnaire, do you agree with these insinuations?

PARIS, Nov 20 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Guinea’s President Alpha Conde of changing the constitution solely to stay in power, a move that he said was serious for the future of Africa’s top bauxite producer.

Guinea’s top court earlier this month confirmed Conde’s victory in October’s election, rejecting accusations of fraud and handing him a third term his opponents say is unconstitutional.

“President Conde has had a career as an opponent which would have justified organising a good alternation on his own,” Macron said in an interview with weekly pan-African magazine Jeune Afrique. “And obviously he organised a referendum and a constitutional change just to be able to keep power.”

Conde’s first election victory in 2010 raised hopes for democratic progress in the former French colony after two years of military rule and nearly a quarter of a century under authoritarian President Lansana Conte, who died in 2008.

But Conde’s critics accuse him of cracking down on dissent and violently repressing protests - charges he has denied.

“That’s why I haven’t sent him a congratulatory letter yet. I think the situation is serious in Guinea, for its youth, for its democratic vitality and for its progress,” Macron said. (Reporting by John Irish; editing by Bate Felix)

Health / Physicians Ask Ogun To Extend Teach Scheme To Healthcare Sector by JerryLekki: 5:38am On May 05, 2021
Health practitioners have asked Ogun State government to use its TEACh programme in the education sector, to reduce the increasing workload of health workers in the state’s primary health care system

They also want the primary healthcare development board be excluded from the ban on ad-hoc appointments

Members of the State Branch of Association of Public Health Physicians made the call during a courtesy visit to the chairman of the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, Mrs Olubukola Onabanjo in her office at Oke Mosan, Abeokuta

The association’s chairman, Doctor D. Adesanya, says there is the need to extend teach programme to the primary healthcare system, because of the increasing workload of health workers in the sector

He explains that the last major employment into the senior cadre in the primary healthcare system, was in 2007, adding that those who retired in the system in the last five to ten years, have not been replaced

Adesanya says the development had resulted into health workers in the system working 24 hours for two to three weeks

The association also asks the state government to allow candidates who failed conversion tests three years ago, to retake the examination to increase the number of officials in the senior cadre.

Politics / Ogun PDP: Kashamu, Adebutu Factions Reunite; Vow To Unseat APC In 2023 by JerryLekki: 5:51am On Apr 22, 2021
The political infighting between members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State appears to have been laid to rest as loyalists of Late Buruji Kashamu and Hon. Ladi Adebutu sheathed their swords.

This is as leaders of the PDP in the State gathered Wednesday at the party secretariat in Abeokuta for a reunion.

DAILY POST reports that the gathering had in attendance, leaders from both factions of the party, including Chief Doyin Okupe, Ladi Adebutu, Aare Tunde Alabi, Prince Segun Seriki and others.

Our correspondent reports that the two factional Chairman of the party, Sikirulahi Ogundele and Samson Bamgbose were at the event, as the duo agreed to work together for a united PDP in Ogun.

In his words, Ogundele said the reunion marked the beginning of a new relationship that would drive the party to power in 2023.

“I am happy that the PDP of 2003 is now back. We are now together in harmony, looking forward to having a united PDP in Ogun State. We are going to get back our mandate from the misrule of the APC, a party that has no blueprint. They just wake up in the morning and embark on any project that comes to their head. They give water or road where not needed. The PDP is the best party so far and we are winning in 2023,” Ogundele stated.

On his own part, Bamgbose expressed optimism that “as God brings us together again, we shall march to victory, stronger than we were in 2004.”

Bamgbose urged members of the party to work together like in the days of former Governor Gbenga Daniel, saying PDP was zero when OGD came in the buildup to the 2003 election.

“OGD came when PDP was zero in Ogun State, but we were able to conquer those who were in power then. Be ready, we are going to the battlefield. Tell those at home that we are all here. PDP is back,” he emphasised.

Also, Segun Seriki clarified that the only Chairman of the PDP in Ogun State was Ogundele.

He said, “I am telling you that there is only one PDP Chairman in Ogun and that is Ogundele. We are no more bothered about exco, now we are talking about next government in Ogun State. We want Ladi Adebutu to represent us and he is going to win in our name. I congratulate all PDP members, we are taking over government in 2023.”

In his remarks, Doyin Okupe was full of praises as he knelt to praise God for the reunion, describing it as happening at God-given time.

Okupe told party leaders in the state that “disagreement is not disloyalty,” adding that “if we don’t disagree, we can’t agree to move forward.

Addressing party faithful, Adebutu enjoined them to be work in harmony without any rancour.

According to him, “the PDP has come to rescue Ogun residents and Nigerians from the suffering bestowed on them by the APC.”

DAILY POST recalls that a reconciliation committed led by Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had recently brokered peace between the two factions, even as some Kashamu loyalists defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Politics / Ogun Gets New 18km Gas Pipeline System by JerryLekki: 6:37pm On Mar 03, 2021
A new 18-kilometre gas pipeline has been launched in Ogun State.

The 150 million standard cubic feet per day of gas (mmscfd) pipeline runs from Ibefun to Rite Foods Ltd’s large-scale factory in Ososa.

The pipeline was built by Axxela Ltd through its subsidiary, Transit Gas Nigeria Ltd (TGNL) in partnership with the Nigerian Gas Marketing Company Ltd (NGMC).

Speaking at the inauguration, Axxela Chief Executive Officer Bolaji Osunsanya said: “Axxela/NGMC pioneered gas distribution in the greater Lagos area, and our current positioning enables us to increase our industrial and commercial client footprint across the south-western corridor.

“By providing the gas advantage, we are enabling the development of self-sustaining industrial clusters to bolster Nigeria’s industrialisation and socio-economic empowerment.”

The project is under the Sagamu Gas Distribution Zone (SGDZ), a joint venture between NGMC and TGNL (the NGMC/TGNL JV), which began operations in 2019 by delivering gas to growing industrial users.

On the NGMC/TGNL JV and the new pipeline grid, NGMC Managing Director Faruk Usman said: “The SGDZ will contribute to the development of Sagamu and its environs by facilitating industrial growth, cleaner energy generation and fostering community employment through gas availability.”

Politics / Herdsmen: Abiodun Deploys Joint Squad To Yewa Area by JerryLekki: 10:38pm On Mar 02, 2021

Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun has handed patrol vehicles over to the Joint Security Intervention Squad (JSIS) to secure lives and property in Yewa (Ogun West Senatorial District) axis of the state against further attacks by suspected killer herdsmen.

JSIS was constituted two weeks ago by the State Government in response to the recent farmers/ herders clashes in Yewa Ketu area.

Members were drawn from the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police, Department of State Security Service (DSS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The security vehicles, comprising 10 operational vans and 20 motorcycles equipped with communication gadgets, were received by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of JSIS Operations, DCP Ahmed Abdullahi, at a ceremony attended by the security chiefs in the state

Abiodun charged operatives of the JSIS to make optimal use of the equipment for protection of the state, hinting personnel of the South West Security Networks (SWSN) code named “Amotekun” will soon be deployed to reinforce JSIS.

He emphasised that equipping the taskforce with necessary working tools is more important than setting it up.

The Governor warned against ascribing crime to any ethnic nationality but addressing and treating criminals with appropriate provisions of the law.

Politics / Ogun Creating More Industrial Clusters For Investors, Says Gov. Abiodun by JerryLekki: 5:13pm On Mar 02, 2021
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, says his administration is creating different industrial clusters across the state to provide conducive environment for more investors to berth in state.

Prince Abiodun, who stated this when he received the management of Mikano International Limited, on a courtesy visit to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, expressed satisfaction that the state would soon be open for industrial revolution.

He stated that aside the Agbara industrial cluster, others would be sited along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode axis, Magboro and the Interchange axis.

He said, "We are creating different industrial clusters around the state. Before, we had the Agbara industrial clusters and now we have the new interchange. We have identified different other clusters, we have what we call Ijebu Cluster, which will be along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode road. Remo Cluster somewhere around the agro airport that is coming up. We have the Magboro Cluster which is around MFM."

The Governor noted that his administration embarked on massive road infrastructure and had also created an Energy and Electricity Board to identify locations where gas pipelines could be extended to.

He pointed out that with good roads and availability of gas, the state would be open for industrial revolution.

Abiodun said, "This administration is investors-friendly. As a matter of fact, our vision is very specific and targeted towards bringing investors and creating an enabling environment for investors in the state.

"We are ready for business, whatever you think this administration can do for you, be rest assured that we will do it for you, we look forward to partnering with you, be rest assured about that. Anything that we can do to make the state more conducive for people like yourself, be rest assured that we will do that."

While calling on the company to apply for land, the Governor said his administration has put in place the Ogun State Investment Promotion Agency and the Business Environment Council to make siting of business hitch-free.

In his remarks, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mikano International Limited, Mofid Karameh, acknowledged the State's delibrate attempt at making the business environment conducive for investors.

He called on the state government to help the company in its efforts at expanding into the food, beverages, syringes and disposable facemask and automobiles.

Mr. Karameh later presented cartons of disposable facemask made by Mikano and a patrol van assembled in the state to the Governor.

He said he delivered the stolen money to his boss which he refused totally to tell despite the pain he was going through. the funniest part was when he said he was giving 200naira from the 15k

Politics / Villagers Kick As Ogun State Government Demolishes Houses, Shrines by JerryLekki: 3:03pm On Dec 02, 2020

The villagers of Libegun Aregbe community in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun state said to have been in existence for over 450 years on Monday raised alarm over alleged demolition of their houses and shrines by the Ogun State government .

Penpushing reports that the villagers led by the Baale(village head), John Akinbola lamented during a peaceful protest that no prior notice given them before the government officials commenced the demolition exercise, adding that there was no compensation awarded them as well, arguing that the demolition will lead to the extinction of the community founded by their forefathers.

The protesters while appealing to Governor Dapo Abiodun over the demolition of their properties by estate developers, expressed fear that their sources of livelihood have been destroyed by the government officials .

“The state government didn’t inform anyone in the village that they are coming for the demolition. Nobody had meeting with us. We just started hearing the noise from the caterpillar demolishing our properties and our shrines .

“We are calling on our governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to come to our aid. We are not angry about any estate in our community but we should be giving a village extension as a settlement. Our school, polling booth and other amenities in the community should be spared”.

”This village has been in existence for over 450 years and the history is there for everyone to see. We are not under Kopabe. It is our founding fathers that established Kobape as a market over 100 years ago, so Libegun is far older than Kobape even as a community.

“All I can tell my people is that we should remain calm, nobody should result into fighting or anything inimical to the peace of our community because of this development. We know that this government is a listening one, and I believe they will hear and come to our aid.

Penpushing further reports that, another resident of the community, Lateef Diyaolu, while speaking noted that the estate development in the community would have been laudable if not for the nonchalant attitude of the state government on the original habitant of the community, and vehemently opposed to the total take over of the village for the housing projects without proper communication and compensation from the state government.

“This is like they are trying to extinct us from our own land which is wrong. Even if the government wants to do anything in any Community, they are supposed to carry along the people leaving in that community. Not to come and destroy our houses and do whatever they want. This is not the promises they gave us when we were voting for them”.

“This is only place we have known as home. So, we do not agree with this. If they want to continue this project, let them come and dialogue with us. We need them to provide us a village extension it will ameliorate the suffering we have been subjected to. Where do they want our families to stay, do they want us to go and start sleeping under the bridge? I have an aged parents in this village, where do I take them to?”

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Communications, Remmy Hazzan when contacted faulted the claim of the villagers, explaining that the proposed site for the estate had been acquired, contrary to claims of the villagers.

“I am aware of the estate development in Libegun area by the Ministry of Housing. The community grouse about the estate development in Libegun is not correct. The only building on that site was even a church which was demolished by the last administration. However, the only thing I think the government can do is the compensation, which I believe may have been done if not.”
