lol let's say it as it is.
And if the keeper was not made to at least pull a nice save. How many times did we just miss the post by whiskers or at least hit the side netting? There are different goal threatening situations. How many did we have besides the goal we scored? Let's focus on the 2nd half. We've already admitted we were woeful in the first.

Yes but we seldom threatened still. Did Pickford ever pull a nice save all match long?

We make it seem like we did to them what they did to us in the first half -- remove goals.. that's what I find appalling. The second half was for the most part even.

Icon4s:
Yes,we were not significantly better but we looked like the team that could get the next goal.

We were not significantly better. You say we were better. Okay then

TheSuperNerd:
Even the news article I posted which you quoted said similar thing. Many more media outlets who followed the game were objective enough to say it also in different terms.... that.. We WERE better than England in that second half. The English did well defending deeply.

And you know what..... yes, I agree... I think you did watch a different game. tongue

Funnily they even had more possession in that second half. How many of our chances were really goal threats? Stats don’t tell you that but a balanced non-biased observation. Understandably I’m a fan. But I want them to even improve on what I saw in the 2nd half. I’m sure Rohr has taken note.

asha80:
hehehe this stats of a thing is important but does not tell a whole story.. same way I saw someone on Twitter saying now that sane's starts at club level this season is better than reus (which is true) and so sane is better qualified than reus to be in this German team

Kai grin we “bossed possession” and they “matched our dominance”

Maybe Na only me watch different match.

TheSuperNerd:
It is not just about stats. It is about game plays... it is about what we saw on TV or live at the stadium. This was an England team running rings all around us in the first half. We made a tactical switch at half time and began bossing possession and we bossed possession till the end of the game. We sprayed more passes and had more forays forward than the English. We were simply better. The English, even having the home advantage, only adjusted and matched our dominance by applying an approach to limit our dominance from translating into further goals after our first, and eventually, only goal went in. They simply applied a subtle form of damage limitation.
They were not having the upper hand; we were.

All they were doing was doing their damn best to restrict us. We dominated possession... we created more chances than them. We made more forays forward than them. We saw Mikel and Iwobi school these guys in midfield plays for most of the second half... Etebo completed most of his passes. The team was so organised and in control all half in that midfield. That is the game most of us here watched. They brought on Loftus cheek later on because they couldn't take it anymore. He did try to wrestle away control but we still had it in our grasps. The international media (most of them) affirms to this.. and you want me to sell the notion that we did not own the second half. Not happening. Like I said, it is surprising we are discussing this because by both stats and what we saw, Nigeria was clearly the side in control in that half. We were on the ascendancy, England was playing catch up and evasive restrictions. Simple.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 12:29pm On Jun 04, 2018
Stats may tell you that a team had more chances or shots on target, doesn't mean all those opportunities necessarily posed a threat to the opposing team. I'm being subjective here. An opinion or two based our "superiority" on the number of goals scored in the second half. You have to look at every opinion and see how they arrived at their conclusions. But no point going on. I didn't see Super Eagles as significantly better besides the first 10 minutes or so. If you SAW otherwise, fine then.

TheSuperNerd:
Some agree with you but most agree with me. There is a difference. The stats from the second half also do not agree with you. But I will only treat it as your conservative opinion. It is clear we owned that half. From all observations, even most of the international media agrees that we dominated the game and possession and created even more chances than them in that half alone. We had more shots on target than England in that half alone sef. I really don't know what game you are referring to but I will not take this any further. Can't even believe we are discussing if we dominated the second half in terms of possession and most major parameters.

yea.. there are other aspects of the stats that we did better.. but sentiments aside, watching that 2nd half, Nigeria was not significantly better. One moment of magic in the opening minutes and a pretty open game, with a better midfield.

It's not like England were not springing passes. The did what they always did, It's just that we stepped up in that department and matched/neutralized them.

Players That Have Been Played Out Of Position In SE and STILL Gave A Good Account Of Themselves:

Alex Iwobi
John Ogu
Shehu Abdullahi
Mikel Obi

I love Aina just as much as anybody else, and honestly, I still feel bad that he's out of the team, but let us stop peddling tales of being played out of position....that means little to nothing. He was brought to unseat Echiejile, he couldn't do that. He had not one bright game and that was what necessitated Idowu's call up. It was Idowu that kicked out Aina.

Now, I would have preferred dropping a Joel Obi, because as far as I concerned, that one is useless to the team, but I'm not Rohr.

And for those saying other foreign born players will not want to play for Nigeria because of an 'Aina' treatment, they need to get their heads out their asses. We are taking Ekong, Balogun, Ebuehi, Idowu, Iwobi to World Cup.....Aina was the only FB who missed out, so, how that translates to a 'poor return' for FBs is beyond me.

There was no poor treatment of Aina, Aina simply failed to step up when he needed to. If you want to go to the World Cup so much, there is no reason why you can't acclimatize yourself to another position. It's not like they turned him into a striker from a defender, so all this talk about out of position blah blah blah is bollocks.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 11:21am On Jun 04, 2018
TheSuperNerd.. I've sen enough opinions on this. My opinion is based on my own observations. Some will also agree with me. I'm in no way trying to downplay our improvement in the second half. But I reiterate we did not own the second half. Maybe you want to be specific as to what we owned in that half. But on the whole, we were not significantly better than England in the second half.

The People’s MOTM, this 22 year-old Gunner is One to Get Fully Behind
(written on June 3rd)

https://cdn.images.dailystar.co.uk/dynamic/58/photos/283000/Alex-Iwobi-769283.jpg

It is fair to say that Alex Iwobi has his critics among the Arsenal faithful. He was only six weeks old when England beat the mighty Oranje in 1996 (4-1) and that tells you how young he still is. Yet there really are already more than a handful of Gunners who want him sold! They have seen enough, they tell me. Everybody is entitled to have an opinion, of course, but come on: give the boy a chance!!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44343704

Yesterday, Alex was voted Player of the Match by the fans, and quite rightly so (see link above).

The Super Eagles were played off the pitch by the Three Lions in the first half, but Alex was the only one who dealt well with the impressive press that was applied by the home team. He constantly held on to the ball and made space for himself without it and with it. He then found a fellow player in enough space to pass the ball to regularly, and thus start an attack from beating the press. I was less impressed by Iwobi’s fellow midfielders who often lost the ball when the slightest bit of pressure was applied to them, which then left the defenders exposed time and again.

England scored twice and should have scored more goals as they outclassed Nigeria completely during the first half.
However, Gernot Rohr did a fab job in making tactical changes – three at the back and four substitutions – and getting his team re-focused for the second half, whilst England’s boys clearly felt they had done enough in the first half and/or were unable to respond adequately to Nigeria’s changes.
The Super Eagles scored within two minutes and then their wing-tales were up, the away crowd were behind them even more and the midfield was dominated by the visitors till the end of the game. It was Iwobi who set up the deadly attack with a fine ball to Ighalo from the centre of midfield; the former Watford striker hit the post with his precise diagonal strike and he was unlucky not to score; but the ball bounced back towards the ‘D-area’ and there was Alex to calmly steer it past defenders and keeper to score a fine, Ramseyesque goal.

Alex kept making himself available and linked up the midfield with attack constantly. At the end he tired and he may have picked up a small injury, but Rohr was not going to sub his best player – one of only five players who played the whole game.

With 1.4 key passes per game, 5 assists and three goals in
26 PL games last season, our 22 year young brightest attacking star from our youth ranks is one to get fully behind and believe in. And I cannot wait to see more of him at the Oranje-deprived WC in a couple of weeks time.

For the most parts we owned that second half. Many agree with this. Let us not be conservative with the truth. We know we must improve but the truth remains that we indeed owned England in that second half. Enough of the overly conservative talk. We dominated the midfield in that second half for the most parts from beginning to end and the ref even ended the game when we were on the attack with seconds on the clock left before 94 mins. EOD. And Iwobi was definitely our star man at Wembley. Our no.1 top performer on the overall.

Odubajo, Aina, Musa Muhammad, Ebuehi and maybe Abdulahi Nura. The RB competition would be fierce post World Cup. I wouldn’t be surprised if Aina doesn’t end up as first choice.

In fact it was pretty even, they prolly created more chances than us. We just did far better than we did in the first half.

All Joel Obi has going for him is a decent career in Italy. So far it hasn’t translated to anything for us.

ykalhaji:
They are not bad players. They have a contract with a professional club, so they can play at least. So do hundreds of other Nigerian players, but the truth is for the composition of our midfield and defence, Onazi's style of running around like a headless chicken and floating like a bee puts every other midfield player in an indecision place. That was good when he was younger and could recover quickly (The reason we loved him) but now we have an Ndidi and a co-ordinated defense, where positioning and space close out is their foundation (Oyinbo drilling since small pikin) not running around and 7 people defending in the box like we have been used to.
Onazi's runs confuses the players. He is an elder, the younger guys can't shout at him when he bleeps up, but you can see that when Onazi is out, that midfield and defence runs smoother. In other words Onazi did not improve his skills and has lost his recovery speed.

Joel... I have no freaking clue this guys advantage playing for us. Some here said he is the Mikel replacement all I see is an average player that is finding it hard to gel with the players.

Except Rohr wants to use them as practice teams for the main starter team, me I no see their usefulness.

Azubuike made our midfield thick at the Olympics and he has been the best midfielder amongst our midfield contingents that ply their trade in the Turkish league.

Agu and Onazi are bench warmers in this same league, yet they are always picked ahead of Azu Okey by Rohr. For reasons best known to him, he also prefers those two to Esiti and Agbo. Just smh bkus Rohr is gradually losing my confidence KPOM

But how many tones did the two DMs find Mikel?

forgiveness:
People are just shouting Onazi no good.. Joel no good like say na only dem go play ball.

The problem was Shehu could not deal with the pacy English forwards and Iwobi didn’t help to defend.

This is because Mikel lost the ball on many occasions and whenever he does that, he added more pressure to the midfield because the wingers which were also part of the midfield had already rushed forward to receive passes when he lost the ball.

This exposed the wing backs and brought confusing to the midfield because when the English won the ball they spread the balls immediately to the wings which stretched our two man midfield.

Remember, Iwobi and Victor are still trying to recover their positions and Mikel is slow to recover too when they began the transition.

These two players played the DMF role and all they need to do was protect back line and find Mikel or the wingers as soon as they get the ball but unfortunately Mikel loosed the ball several times.

Mikel was the biggest culprit in the midfield. He unstabled the team.

Anyway, Shehu has been exposed as a weakling.

Iwobi best position is the AMF but no substitute
.
Ebuehi and Brian are better as wing backs.

Ogu can play in a 3 mans defence but somehow we were still exposed from his wing.

Etebo na NEPA. Off and on. Today was his on day

Ahmed has pace but nobody to support him.

We don't have many forward options.

Anyway, with what I see, we go win Iceland. Croatia can be won too but we must play 3-5-2 formation.
