Even Iwobi said as a child he wanted to play for Nigeria. you and I know if England had gone for him early enough he will not be playing for us today.
Nigeria is a big name in football. That's the point. A bigger name than Hungary. Stay with the point and stop digressing.

tbaba1234:
You HAD a name. Nigeria is not much to be reckoned with these days. Let us be honest with ourselves.

Otigba's decision was based on patroitism not necessarily the best career choice. I think, there was an interview where he talked about dreaming of playing for Nigeria as a child.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 4:18pm On Nov 07, 2017
Nigeria is a bigger football nation. A popular one for that matter. We have a name. Nigeria may not give him a better option, but often times in life we make choices based on what we think will benefit us more. I'm not here trying to analyze which option is ACTUALLY better.

As regards the Russia issue, from my little research it's not like he will be losing his Russian citizenship. I have to do further research on that. I've read OGN's story on that.

A
tbaba1234:
Hungary does not have to qualify for any tournament for them to be a better international/career choice for Otigba. Playing European qualifiers with the best footballing nations will give him great exposure and possibly greater career opportunities. Playing Togo and Benin republic does not offer those kinds of opportunities. India /Uganda do not play European qualifiers.

From a career perspective, Nigeria does not necessarily offer better career growth and we have won only one AFCON since..
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 4:02pm On Nov 07, 2017
The comparison was actually Nigeria vs Hungary as regards Otigba. The India mention is just to buttress my point that countries get grade for football. No point teaching me about Hungary's most recents stats. Besides, before then they had not qualified for the Euros for 44 years. Or how many times had Hungary reached the last 16 in the Euros, when Otigba considered Nigeria ahead of Hungary?

tbaba1234:
Your first analogy was with India who have not qualified for anything.

As in the case of Otigba, it is probably best for them to look out for their best career interests as patrotism could make them miss out of international football.

Idowu is having to give up the Russian passport to play for Nigeria. Do you know how difficult that is??

Even Uganda is not a bad footballing nation. We are making comparisons here.. Talking about the last Euros does not remove from my point.
My point is these players are attached to both countries and they will make decisions based on what will suit their interest not patriotism. Patriotism is overplayed here. We can believe what we want so long as it makes us happy.

tbaba1234:
Hungary is not a bad footballing nation. They were at the last Euros and qualified for the round of 16. Otigba could have been playing in the Euros.

If Hungary calls Otigba today, it is in his best interest to accept.

Guys, can we just leave the technical decisions to the guys who are paid to make those decisions. Here's why:

1. Gernot Rohr played the game at a higher level than any one of us here
2. Gernot Rohr had coached the game at a higher than anyone of us
3. I stand corrected but Rohr and his crew can read the game better than everyone of us here
4. Gernot Rohr knows these players better than everyone of us because he trains them and have watched them up, close, and personal.

Some may like Nigeria more. But considering our image, MOST like the other country more.
If I asked you today to play for India will you agree? Hungry na country for football?
Besides there is no guarantee Otigba will turn down another interest from Hungary.

tbaba1234:
Lol, different tone.. So he should not like Tammy's update? Playing international football is a big deal.

By the way, Ejaria commited himself to a Nigeria future years ago. Even though, he had the choice of England. Since then, he has played for the English under 20. I follow most of the English Nigerian boys on social media and Ejaria is one of the few that consistently follows Nigerian football. He was allowed to train with Manu's under 17.

Did Otigba not reject a call-up for Nigeria? Have you called him since?

Players with dual citizenship will usually go to the country that shows interest first. Building a relatioship is important but footballers have to look out for their careers too.

I was just being sarcastic.

Mujtahida:
its not an issue. i get the perspective of saying players should declare for us. but I oppose it when its said that we should go for ONLY those who declare for us. Nooooooo. We don't wait for anybody to declare any sh!t for us. We go out for them. We engage them, we persuade them, we give them reasons why playing for us will do them good. with this approach we will gain some and we will lose some. at the end those we gain will don the GWg with pride. Their pictures would be displayed but only few would know that they were fist engaged and approached by us. Ebuehi would don the Gwg with pride hopefully by Friday. He ejected us before but he will don the Jersey with pride. One needs some depth to grasp these things.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 2:23pm On Nov 07, 2017
Conversely, Ameobi.
Why didn't he turn down England for Nigeria when England weren't making any moves?
Their heart is with both countries, not necessarily 50-50, with each player and their own unique situation.
I wasn't lashing out at Alaba. I was only saying almost all of them are in the same boat. Let's not speak of patriotism like if we were presented with two passports. That of the UK/Australia/US etc, and our Nigerian passport, and we were asked to burn one, we will save our Nigerian passport. Most Nigerians will burn their Nigerian passports. It's a personal decision based on what the decision will bring us. Austria no near Nigeria when we talking football. So let's go back to the bigger nations in football. Most of them if asked to pick between Nigeria and the other country, Nigeria will be their second choice.
let's not try to group some and castigate them. Of course some will get lashed at based on their utterances.

Just today Tammy fell on England's trap again. Tomorrow IF he is forced to reconsider Nigeria, he will have to answer many questions from the Nigerian public. Even his "uncle" Pinnick may not be able to save him.

Icon79:
Bia, Big Joe, did somebody hack into your account? Did you really expect him to turn down Austria even when Nigeria wasn't making any moves? Yes, he was just 17 but opportunity and time wait for no one. Who's knows if that might be the only opportunity he might have?

Listen, the people we have issues with are those of them we turned down Nigeria because they want to wait for another country. As far as I know, Alaba never turned down Nigeria .... Austria came calling first and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands, as he should.

People are attracted to good systems and good organization.

Mujtahida:
They are four brothers not three: Francis(Andreas) Giannis, Thanasis and Alexis. Do you perchance know why none of them is interested in playing for Nigeria? Because nothing happens in vacuum.
Well, when the poster I referred to was asked by another poster how Giannis and his family felt towards Nigeria, suspecting that they must feel bitter towards Nigeria, the poster said No, the parents werent bitter but on the contrary they encouraged their children to play for Nigeria and that if he (the poster) was still involved with Nigerian basketball at the time he met them he would have convinced them to play for Nigeria but that by then Gianis was already in the Greek selection radar and that fastreacked him turning out for Greece.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 1:55pm On Nov 07, 2017
Well, let's not be sentimental so we can think clearly.
This is my suggestion on the matter.
Sometimes we look like beggars, just because we don't have a system of approaching.
What we need is a standard for invitation of those in diaspora.

Firstly we need a database. These players should be put in the database while still in their early teens. Relationship with the players and their parents should be maintained.

Secondly, these players, on a rotation basis should be invited to train with the big boys whenever we are camped in Europe. This would make the players have a relationship not only with the senior players but also the coaches handling the team.

Thirdly, we should send correspondence to these players at important dates, and provide option for them to indicate their availability for National assignments with Nigeria. They should be informed, the option is just for them to show interest, not a guarantee that they will be called up. This way we know from the onset those who are nursing an ambition to play for Nigeria, and those who remain interested.

With this process put in place, we will not need any middle man or any team to meet with these players for talks when we need them. We will make the job easier for our coaches. All they need do is look at the numbers and make the right approaches according to need.

TheGoodJoe:
I have no beef with that. I am against pleading and carrying flowers with tuxedo and a limousine for them to play for us. If the opportunity does not come and like the prodigal son, they remember they are Kings in their home. They are welcome to come home and fight to build Nigeria with their skills.

My problem is with the Undecided/Do not feel Nigerian crew. They can ring when they feel Nigerian. Not going to beg them to play for us.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 1:22pm On Nov 07, 2017
They were decided. The opportunity did not come, so they changed their decision. Let's call a spade a spade.

TheGoodJoe:
I am not and will never be against any one having feelings to represent another country. However, I only want those devoted and ready to play for us in the team. Not undecided. There was a time Ola Aina was not decided. Now he is. Same with Shola Ameobi.

When they are ready and show devotion, no doubt, they can come. Including Ibe. I am against convincing and luring. When the player is ready, he will know. You can hint, inform him but not go the extra length.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 1:15pm On Nov 07, 2017
Lol so who among Balogun, Ekong etc feel ONLY Nigerian?

TheGoodJoe:
Alaba is also Austrian. I think he was born and grew up there. So it is not easy turning down a call for them. I wish he waited. We would have certainly called him. By 2010 he was already a respected player.

He likes Nigeria. He feels Nigerian. It is just unfortunate he also feels Austrian. So we wish him well and hunt for those who wants us ahead of others.
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 1:07pm On Nov 07, 2017
Patriotism is an illusion. Today he is giving more than 100% to Austria.
If he felt so Nigerian as you want to believe, why didn't he wait? He was just 17.

Modified
It was said it was told to him then that we were focussing on homegrown players for our cadet teams. That should have giving hope for Super Eagles in the future. If he was so patriotic about Nigeria as you guys want to believe, why didn't he act like Shola Ameobi?

And did Ameobi later play for Nigeria? Why did he not die waiting to be called up by England because of patriotism? In all, Nigeria will ALMOST always be a second choice if they are afforded the opportunity both ways.

TheGoodJoe:
Alaba holds the record as the youngest player to play for the Austrian National team at 17 years old. There is no way we could have approached him at that time to play for us.

I wish him the best because of his love for Nigeria. Austria knew him, he played in their league for the best club in Austria. Alaba is not one of the members of "I don't feel Nigerian crew." We would never have beaten Austria for him.

Tammy Abraham just faced a barrage of questions to ascertain how loyal he is to the Three Lions. And someone expects him to say it's 50-50.

Excerpts

“I see myself as being a long-term England player,” he said. “That is where my main focus is and now that I am here, I am 100 per cent focused here and trying to get into that team as much as I can, really, so my main focus would be here and nowhere else for now.” Asked if he felt like he had a decision to make, he added: “I think I was pretty set on England, really.

My questions:
1. Why was it necessary for the interviewer to ask such questions considering the timing?
2. Why was he asked if he felt he had a decision to make?
3. Why did Tammy say, "Now that I'm here"?
4. Why did he say, "nowhere else for now"?
5. Why did he conclude, "I think I was pretty set on England"?

My conclusion: Dude is coy
My guess: He told the NFF he wants to explore his options first. And Pinnick is okay with that. Which is why the last time NFF commented about the issue, they said they know where they stood with Tammy Abraham, and didn't want to speak further.

Modified:
Bryan Efe's opinion on this comes to mind: Nigeria as fallback option.

Abraham sees himself as ‘long-term England player’ despite Nigeria’s interest in striker

https://img.skysports.com/17/07/384x216/VrcmEwYzE6-RU9I82NZhpsmJXofG6Jao.jpg?20170720112415

Tammy Abraham has pledged his long-term future to England, despite Nigeria attempting to sway the striker their way. The 20-year-old was watching Sky Sports News last Thursday when it flashed up that manager Gareth Southgate was handing him a maiden senior call-up, with Germany and Brazil now lying in wait for a striker on loan at Swansea from Chelsea. Abraham has represented England at youth levels, but in September Nigeria football federation president Amaju Pinnick – a childhood friend of the striker’s father – spoke of his confidence the eligible youngster would commit to them.

Victor Moses has previously gone from the Young Lions to the Super Eagles, while Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha won two senior England caps in friendlies before switching his allegiance to the Ivory Coast.

Abraham, though, says playing for England is his only focus right now.

“Playing in the Premier League, it would be nice obviously to make it into the England team as well. My main focus was here and nowhere else. “Of course (it was flattering), but for me my main focus was here. But it is obviously nice to know that I was doing something right and going in the right direction. “I think (Nigeria) tried to (roll out the red carpet), but, like I said, the main focus was here so there was no way of trying to do that for me, really.” The international break promises to be quite a learning curve for Abraham, who only has 12 top-flight appearances to his name.

“It would be a massive achievement for me and a big confidence boost as well, it would show that I’m going in the right direction,” he said. “If I do get my opportunity I’d like to grab it as much as I can. “I feel like I’m ready, but it won’t be easy. I just have to keep proving to the manager in training and showing why he picked me and just keep working as hard as I can. “I just want to go out there, enjoy myself and show to the world what I’m truly made of.” However, Abraham is under no illusion about the challenge that lies ahead of him, with former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright tempering congratulations with advice that “now the hard work begins”. “Of course this is just the beginning,” the 20-year-old added.

“Now that I am here I have to keep pushing as much as I can. This is my chance and I will try and take my opportunity as much as I can. “(Wright) was a bit before my time, but I watch his videos on YouTube and he had everything as a striker. There are parts of that I need to bring into my game as well. There weren’t really any doubts because I have confidence in myself and belief in my ability and my desire to work as hard as I can.”

Yes I do but not the story.

Mujtahida:
The first wave of brain gain was from the early nineteenth century to the early twentieth century when returning and repatriated slaves from Brazil, Cuba, Sierra Leone came to Lagos and injected new streams of life into the town - in law, education, religion, politics, music, culture and even sports and galvanised the rapid development of Lagos into a vibrant, throbbing city.
