Even Iwobi said as a child he wanted to play for Nigeria. you and I know if England had gone for him early enough he will not be playing for us today. Nigeria is a big name in football. That's the point. A bigger name than Hungary. Stay with the point and stop digressing. tbaba1234: |
Nigeria is a bigger football nation. A popular one for that matter. We have a name. Nigeria may not give him a better option, but often times in life we make choices based on what we think will benefit us more. I'm not here trying to analyze which option is ACTUALLY better. As regards the Russia issue, from my little research it's not like he will be losing his Russian citizenship. I have to do further research on that. I've read OGN's story on that. A tbaba1234: |
The comparison was actually Nigeria vs Hungary as regards Otigba. The India mention is just to buttress my point that countries get grade for football. No point teaching me about Hungary's most recents stats. Besides, before then they had not qualified for the Euros for 44 years. Or how many times had Hungary reached the last 16 in the Euros, when Otigba considered Nigeria ahead of Hungary? tbaba1234: |
I don't even pay attention to many of those keepers. Abi we dey go play ten ten for world cup? Icon79: |
very soon he will pull in his kid brother much to the disgust of forgiveness. ![]() I don find trouble, make i run lol jotey: |

Even Uganda is not a bad footballing nation. We are making comparisons here.. Talking about the last Euros does not remove from my point. My point is these players are attached to both countries and they will make decisions based on what will suit their interest not patriotism. Patriotism is overplayed here. We can believe what we want so long as it makes us happy. tbaba1234: |

fans will be fans. And this is not limited to Nigerian fans. Icon79: |
Some may like Nigeria more. But considering our image, MOST like the other country more. If I asked you today to play for India will you agree? Hungry na country for football? Besides there is no guarantee Otigba will turn down another interest from Hungary. tbaba1234: |
okay good. Declaration is only good for the papers.. But that's not how civilized people do things. Those players were asked by journalists and they answered. So it made it's way to the media. It's not like they called a press conference or something lol. The Mujtahida: |
haha same player that liked Abraham's England invite.. oga they all like us.. But they also like the other country. jotey: |
dont mind him! PROVERBZ: |
I was just being sarcastic. Mujtahida: |
Conversely, Ameobi. Why didn't he turn down England for Nigeria when England weren't making any moves? Their heart is with both countries, not necessarily 50-50, with each player and their own unique situation. I wasn't lashing out at Alaba. I was only saying almost all of them are in the same boat. Let's not speak of patriotism like if we were presented with two passports. That of the UK/Australia/US etc, and our Nigerian passport, and we were asked to burn one, we will save our Nigerian passport. Most Nigerians will burn their Nigerian passports. It's a personal decision based on what the decision will bring us. Austria no near Nigeria when we talking football. So let's go back to the bigger nations in football. Most of them if asked to pick between Nigeria and the other country, Nigeria will be their second choice. let's not try to group some and castigate them. Of course some will get lashed at based on their utterances. Just today Tammy fell on England's trap again. Tomorrow IF he is forced to reconsider Nigeria, he will have to answer many questions from the Nigerian public. Even his "uncle" Pinnick may not be able to save him. Icon79: |
People are attracted to good systems and good organization. Mujtahida: |
Well, let's not be sentimental so we can think clearly. This is my suggestion on the matter. Sometimes we look like beggars, just because we don't have a system of approaching. What we need is a standard for invitation of those in diaspora. Firstly we need a database. These players should be put in the database while still in their early teens. Relationship with the players and their parents should be maintained. Secondly, these players, on a rotation basis should be invited to train with the big boys whenever we are camped in Europe. This would make the players have a relationship not only with the senior players but also the coaches handling the team. Thirdly, we should send correspondence to these players at important dates, and provide option for them to indicate their availability for National assignments with Nigeria. They should be informed, the option is just for them to show interest, not a guarantee that they will be called up. This way we know from the onset those who are nursing an ambition to play for Nigeria, and those who remain interested. With this process put in place, we will not need any middle man or any team to meet with these players for talks when we need them. We will make the job easier for our coaches. All they need do is look at the numbers and make the right approaches according to need. TheGoodJoe: |
They were decided. The opportunity did not come, so they changed their decision. Let's call a spade a spade. TheGoodJoe: |
Lol so who among Balogun, Ekong etc feel ONLY Nigerian? TheGoodJoe: |
Patriotism is an illusion. Today he is giving more than 100% to Austria. If he felt so Nigerian as you want to believe, why didn't he wait? He was just 17. Modified It was said it was told to him then that we were focussing on homegrown players for our cadet teams. That should have giving hope for Super Eagles in the future. If he was so patriotic about Nigeria as you guys want to believe, why didn't he act like Shola Ameobi? And did Ameobi later play for Nigeria? Why did he not die waiting to be called up by England because of patriotism? In all, Nigeria will ALMOST always be a second choice if they are afforded the opportunity both ways. TheGoodJoe: |
Victor Moses is injured Edopesin: |
Kane not being available boosts his chances for sure. I only implied his debut is even more likely with Kane's withdrawal. And most likely more time on the pitch. I wasn't insinuating he won't have been fielded if Kane was present. Magink: |
Tammy Abraham just faced a barrage of questions to ascertain how loyal he is to the Three Lions. And someone expects him to say it's 50-50. Excerpts “I see myself as being a long-term England player,” he said. “That is where my main focus is and now that I am here, I am 100 per cent focused here and trying to get into that team as much as I can, really, so my main focus would be here and nowhere else for now.” Asked if he felt like he had a decision to make, he added: “I think I was pretty set on England, really. My questions: 1. Why was it necessary for the interviewer to ask such questions considering the timing? 2. Why was he asked if he felt he had a decision to make? 3. Why did Tammy say, "Now that I'm here"? 4. Why did he say, "nowhere else for now"? 5. Why did he conclude, "I think I was pretty set on England"? My conclusion: Dude is coy My guess: He told the NFF he wants to explore his options first. And Pinnick is okay with that. Which is why the last time NFF commented about the issue, they said they know where they stood with Tammy Abraham, and didn't want to speak further. Modified: Bryan Efe's opinion on this comes to mind: Nigeria as fallback option. |
whether he debuts or not won't make a difference. You are not making any point. I posted the interview just a couple minutes ago. Only people who can read between the lines will really get it. Magink: |
Abraham sees himself as ‘long-term England player’ despite Nigeria’s interest in striker https://img.skysports.com/17/07/384x216/VrcmEwYzE6-RU9I82NZhpsmJXofG6Jao.jpg?20170720112415 Published: 22:55 Monday 06 November 2017 Tammy Abraham has pledged his long-term future to England, despite Nigeria attempting to sway the striker their way. The 20-year-old was watching Sky Sports News last Thursday when it flashed up that manager Gareth Southgate was handing him a maiden senior call-up, with Germany and Brazil now lying in wait for a striker on loan at Swansea from Chelsea. Abraham has represented England at youth levels, but in September Nigeria football federation president Amaju Pinnick – a childhood friend of the striker’s father – spoke of his confidence the eligible youngster would commit to them. Victor Moses has previously gone from the Young Lions to the Super Eagles, while Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha won two senior England caps in friendlies before switching his allegiance to the Ivory Coast. Abraham, though, says playing for England is his only focus right now. “I see myself as being a long-term England player,” he said. “That is where my main focus is and now that I am here, I am 100 per cent focused here and trying to get into that team as much as I can, really, so my main focus would be here and nowhere else for now.” Asked if he felt like he had a decision to make, he added: “I think I was pretty set on England, really. “Playing in the Premier League, it would be nice obviously to make it into the England team as well. My main focus was here and nowhere else. “Of course (it was flattering), but for me my main focus was here. But it is obviously nice to know that I was doing something right and going in the right direction. “I think (Nigeria) tried to (roll out the red carpet), but, like I said, the main focus was here so there was no way of trying to do that for me, really.” The international break promises to be quite a learning curve for Abraham, who only has 12 top-flight appearances to his name. “It would be a massive achievement for me and a big confidence boost as well, it would show that I’m going in the right direction,” he said. “If I do get my opportunity I’d like to grab it as much as I can. “I feel like I’m ready, but it won’t be easy. I just have to keep proving to the manager in training and showing why he picked me and just keep working as hard as I can. “I just want to go out there, enjoy myself and show to the world what I’m truly made of.” However, Abraham is under no illusion about the challenge that lies ahead of him, with former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright tempering congratulations with advice that “now the hard work begins”. “Of course this is just the beginning,” the 20-year-old added. “Now that I am here I have to keep pushing as much as I can. This is my chance and I will try and take my opportunity as much as I can. “(Wright) was a bit before my time, but I watch his videos on YouTube and he had everything as a striker. There are parts of that I need to bring into my game as well. There weren’t really any doubts because I have confidence in myself and belief in my ability and my desire to work as hard as I can.” --Yorkshirepost |
