Will you vote Mrs Oluremi Tinubu as governor of Lagos State if she is fielded in 2015?

Why/Why not?

Her profile:

Mrs Oluremi Tinubu was born on September 21st 1960 as the twelfth child of Chief and Mrs. John Ikusebiala (Odugbesan) of Ogun State. She had her secondary education at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School Ijebu-Ode. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education (Biology) from University of Ife, now known as the Obafemi Awolowo University as well as a National Certificate of Education in Botany and Zoology from the Adeyemi College of Education.

Her interests lie in the promotion of the rights and dignity of the poor, disadvantaged and most vulnerable members of the society. One of her major achievements as First Lady of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 was the establishment of New Era Foundation, a non- governmental organisation which is geared towards voluntary social service through programmes that are geared towards youth and women development.

Some of the foundation’s initiatives include: The Spelling Bee a spelling competition which provides a platform for pupils of public secondary and primary schools in Lagos to showcase their innate talents while inculcating in them the good value of healthy rivalry essential for good academic performance. The winners of the spelling bee contest are sponsored on educational exchange programmes abroad, and given scholarships throughout the duration of their university education and go on to act as “One Day Governor” of Lagos State; HIV/ AIDS advocacy programme for youths which trains, educates and enlightens the youth on the HIV/AIDS pandemic; the Alternative High School for girls which is an innovative formal education institution which serves as a vehicle for rehabilitation and propelling girls who have dropped out of secondary school to prepare for and obtain secondary school certificates and other acceptable societal values and norms; The National Wheel Chair Tennis Championship, a competition which showcases the innate talents of the physically challenged athletes in Nigeria; the Junior Chef Competition which a cooking competition aimed at inculcating cooking skills among young school children.

A role model for the Nigerian Youth, and women, Oluremi Tinubu is a philanthropist and a patron to several non- governmental and humanitarian organisations.

She is married to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the marriage is blessed with children.

Arnold Schwarzenegger criticises Obama over his skinny legs

November 3, 2008 - 10:08AM

Muscleman-turned-actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger called on Barack Obama to beef up his his policies - and his body - at a high-voltage campaign rally for Republican John McCain.

Schwarzenegger, the Hollywood action hero who is now the Republican governor of California, delighted a crowd of several thousand at a McCain campaign event in Ohio by ridiculing both Obama's policies and his slender physique.

The Austrian-born former Mr Universe has hosted a bodybuilding tournament in Columbus for several years, and opened his address by inviting Obama to participate in the next event.

"Every year in March I come here to organize the Arnold Classic, which is all about building the body and pumping," Schwarzenegger said.

"That's why I want to invite Senator Obama because he needs to do something about those skinny legs. I'm going to make him do some squats.

"And then we're going to make him do some biceps curls to beef up those scrawny little arms. But if he could only do something about putting some meat on his ideas.

"Senator McCain on the other hand is built like a rock. His character and his views are solid."

McCain and Schwarzenegger rolled into the Nationwide Arena Hockey Stadium together on the Republican candidate's "Straight Talk Express", the campaign bus that has ferried him on a two-day blitz of this battleground state.

While McCain received loud cheers, it was Schwarzenegger who provided some much-needed glamor and the biggest cheers with a searing attack on Obama's economic policies. He meanwhile painted former Vietnam War prisoner and navy pilot McCain as a "real-life American hero."

"John McCain's character has been tested as no other presidential candidate in the history of this nation," Schwarzenegger said. "He has spent five and a half years as a prisoner of war. He has been tested under torture, under temptation, under deprivation, under isolation.

"He has proven what kind of a man he is. We don't have to wonder if he's ready to lead. We don't have to wonder is he ready to be president of the United States. John McCain has served his country longer in a POW camp than his opponent has served in the United State Senate."

Ohio is a must-win state for McCain, 72, who is trailing Obama in a clutch of pivotal battlegrounds won by outgoing President George W Bush in 2004.

It is unforunate that the pastor's house got burnt. I sympathise with him.

If you read the book of Jeremiah in the Bible, you would realise that sometimes prophets of God suffer just so that the people may understand God's message.

A few examples:
Prophet Jeremiah was specially selected (called) before he was born Jer 1:5

Jeremiah reluctantly entered into the service Jer 1:6-8

Jeremiah was specifically called to influence the political life of nations. He was to stand up against nations and kingdoms, destroy and tear down some while planting building others. Jer 1:10

God warned him to be bold when he stands against kings, officials, priests and people of Judea. Who will oppose him else God will embarrass him in the presence of these people. Jer 1:18-19

God instructed him not to get married or have children to show that a similar fate will befall the people Jer 16:1-4

God told him not to attend feasts or parties or eat or drink with the people to show the people that a time will come when they will enjoy such pleasures again. Jer 16:8-9

When he proclaimed God's warning to the people, thay attempted to kill him. Jer 26:10-15

God instructed him to make a "fool" of himself by wearing a yoke normally used on aninmals ploughing fields and deliver a message to important dignitaries from neighbouring nations who had come to visit the king of his own nation. Jer 27:1-6

The king tore and burnt messages Jeremiah had carefully written meaning he had to painstakingly rewrite the messages at the risk of his life. Jer 36.

He was arrested, flogged and imprisoned in a dungeon for sevaral days on suspicion of being a deserter when he was on his way to claim his inheritance even though he was not a soldier. Jer 37:11-17

When he was brought out from the dungeon, the king had the effontery to ask Jeremiah if God had any message for him (the king). Of course, God did- that he would be defeated by the Babylonians. A message Jeremiah was bold to deliver. Of course he was sent back to the dungeon! Jer 37:11ffg

When the kingdom fell to the Babylonians, they found Jeremiah bound in chains among other captives being sent on exile in Babylon.

So even though he was a prophet, Jeremiah was a prominent character in the political life of his nation not by choice but by compulsion and great risk to his life.

Most of the things he said were not understood by the people of his time making him look at different times like a fool, traitor, deserter, non-patriot, etc.

I have never been a member of Pastor Bakare's church and do not intend to be, I actually did not agree with his decision to run as VP after his previous tirades against the political class.

On benefit of hindsight however, I see the hand of God in his entry.

Imagine that Buhari's running mate had been a fickle imdividual, professianal politician or neophyte, I am convinced that such a person would have agreed to sign a post-dated resignation letter even though it is criminal and unconstitutional.

Let the dust settle, I am sure we would hear more about the recent happenings and the parts played by various individuals. I believe that is why Bakare had to be at the centre of the action.

This would not be like the Yar'Adua sickness matter that we are only hearing details about from wikileaks.

Please let Bakare be!

Kyrgyzstan politicians slaughter sheep to exorcise 'evil spirits'

Last Updated: 2:34PM BST 21/04/2011

Politicians in Kyrgyzstan ritually slaughtered seven sheep in parliament to exorcise "evil spirits" from the chamber, following a string of violent incidents.

The parliament press service said the sheep were killed in a ritual sacrifice within the walls of the Zhogorku Kenesh parliament in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek.

"Parliament deputies are hoping to chase evil spirits from the Zhogorku Kenesh," an official with the public relations department said.

Earlier this month, politicians arranged an armed showdown after a parliamentary row in the chamber over corruption got out of hand, according to security forces.

Ten handguns and an AK47 rifle were seized after police sealed off the building.

The impoverished former Soviet nation went through a series of violent clashes last year when a bloody revolution last April which unseated president Kurmanbek Bakiyev was followed by deadly inter-ethnic clashes in June.

Kurmanbek Osmonov, a politician, said the sacrifice had been conducted at the initiative of the deputies and a Muslim cleric had been invited to pray for the victims of the April and June clashes.

"The meat of the sacrificial sheep will be sent to a home for the elderly, an orphanage and a mosque," he said.

"We're hoping that the tragic events that happened last year will not be repeated and peace and stability will settle in the country.

I also agree with you that the current political landscape with high level of corruption in Nigeria has now made it easy for any "opportunist" proclaiming himself an anti-corruption crusader to easily become a hero.

Ribadu and Akunyili easily come to mind.

It was the same "passion" that Ribadu used to convince us that he was fighting corrupt officials that he attacked Buhari and Shekarau at the NN24 debate. This and other Recent events have now shown him to be a brash, exuberant individual only riding on the people's weariness of the corruption in the land.

The Anambra Central Senatorial seat debacle has also shown that it is the same passion that Akunyili regaled us with her war on drug counterfeiters and the rebranding project that she has tried to convince us of her saintly part in the fiasco. Imagine her saying that neither her, her party, or the governor of her state cannot afford N10m. She event to the extent of saying that the governor lives in his mother's house and so cannot build a house for an electoral officer.

All these makes me wonder how we could have believed most of those things she said when she was at NAFDAC and the info ministry!

This is ANPP's last stand as a national party.

They will lose the governorship elections in Kano and maybe one other NE state and the governor of any remaining ANPP state(s) will defect to CPC or PDP.

FRESH? That one na Okotie party o! I don't see them lasting another six years and it would take that long only if Okotie decides to show face in 2015. Remember that they had a candidate for Lagos governor in 2007? This time, I don't think they contested for any office apart from president.

Hmm.

I remember the fear and trembling that siezed a cousin of mine who lived at the SSS quarters behind FRCN and Dodan Barracks those days.

One of the mistakes Orkar and co made Was announcing the excision of some states from the country.

Interestingly, Great Ogboru who was accused of financing the coup is major political actor in Delta state today. I am yet to hear his own side of the story.

Why Orkar and co really struck is a mystery to me because I normally believe that coups go beyond the reasons given in those 'fellow countrymen' speeches.

For instance, we have heard that the reason the military struck in 1983 was to avoid Buhari being tried and that the reason for the 1985 coup was to save MKO from Buhari, etc.

So why did Ogboru finance the Orkar coup?

P.s. I have nothing againt Ogboru or his ambition to be governor.

Why do westerners wear a rope around their neck and call it a tie? The Iranians have lot about ties- ask them

Why does the president of Afhanistan wear a blanket around like those south american peasants (peruvians, bolivians, mexicans, argentines, etc)?

Why does Fidel Castro wear 'an army uniform'?

Why do the Indian hindu presidents wear large turbans and Saudi and other mid east royals wear those funny white robes?

Why does the Bolivian president wear that funny 'spanish' suit?

Why do westerners wear dark suits?

The answer? Culture!

You should see OBJ when he went to USA to visit Jimmy Carter. Carter looked like a 'boy' beside him with OBJ in his agbada!

Presidential debate: Like Shekarau like Clegg

By Nnaemeka Meribe, Published: Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Before its last general election, Britain, unlike the United States, did not have, as part of their political culture, a live television debate for the leaders of the parties aspiring to form a government.

Britain, as you probably know, runs a parliamentary system of government which means that a government is formed by the party that wins the majority seats in the general election. The leader of the party, who becomes the prime minister, is usually invited by the Queen to form a government. But if no party wins enough seats to be in clear majority, two parties can hold coalition talks with a view to forming a government. In such case, the leader of the senior partner in the coalition would be invited by the Queen to form a coalition government.

That was exactly what happened in the last general elections in the UK that produced David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party, as the prime minister. After the election last year, the Conservatives did not win enough seats in the parliament to form a government-though they won more seats than the then ruling Labour Party, which came second, and the Liberal Democrats which came third. And after the ruling Labour Party, led by Gordon Brown, could not strike a deal with the Liberal Democrats led by Nick Clegg, the door was open for the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats to form a government.

But how did the Liberal Democrats win enough seats to become the beautiful bride? It was Clegg’s live TV debate performance. Few days before the debate featuring the leaders of the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democratic parties (the three largest political parties in the UK—though the Liberal Democratic Party is by far the smallest of the three) were put on the spot in a live TV debate.

Before then, the only time the UK people saw leaders of the parties in a TV debate-like situation was during parliamentary sessions when leader of opposition party and that of any other party with significant seat asked the prime minister questions.

With the public disapproval of the Labour party increasing by the day coupled with the poor debating skills of Brown and many not knowing Clegg’s debating ability, pundits expectedly gave the debate to Cameron, whom the right wing press had packaged over the years as the perfect man for the prime minister’s job. But Clegg, a known atheist, surprised everybody during the first of the two debates with his articulacy and analysis of the economic cum social crisis of Britain.

Clegg’s performance at the debate made him the latest British hero. It created a Clegg bounce and handed his party its best performance in the polls since the late 1970s.

During our own presidential debate last week, I doubt if anybody gave the All Nigeria Peoples Party candidate, Ibrahim Shekarau, any chance to do well. In fact, among the frontrunners in the presidential race (Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, Nuhu Ribadu of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change and Shekarau himself) Shekarau, to many, is by far the outsider. Personally, I wanted to hear the other candidates as I believed Shekarau wasn’t intellectual and experienced enough to perform well when put on the spot.

Since the PDP man, President Jonathan, ‘dodged’ the debate, I was waiting to see how Buhari and Ribadu would handle some intellectually tasking questions about their antecedents and our socio-economic situation. Before the debate, I had given it to Ribadu, considering that he is the youngest among them and seemed to have in the recent past been more active at the national level than others.

But after the first round of questions, I began to see Shekarau in another light. And by the time the debate ended, my total impression about him changed. And when I made a few calls to friends and asked them whom they felt carried the day, they all gave it to the Kano State governor. His analyses of issues were spot on. And even when questions which were expected to rattle him were asked, he did justice to them with candour. He did not debate like a student activist and never lacked a satisfying answer to any question.

After the debate, his popularity rating soared. In fact if the presidential election was done on that Friday (and if ours is a country were votes count and debate performances can win elections), we would have been talking of president-elect Shekarau. Unfortunately, however, it isn’t like that here. He will have a lot of issues to contend with—his performance in Kano State as a governor, the spread of his party’s structure cum rigging ability, the sentiments, the depth of his pocket, etc.

The point is that this thread is really emotional rather than logical , IMO , given what we know about Nigeria . What is an "expensive gamble"? It is only in Nigeria we speak as if folks are worse off because they stood up to be counted and nobly presented themselves as candidates for top office . No one would bother to contest an election if they think that they will lose everything if unsuccessful .

Others have bounced back from far worse . I really don't see the point of this thread . The elections has shown how simple Nigerians are . Anyone who thinks Ribadu is now 'damaged goods' that cannot be marketed for greater potency in future is simply not conversant with what obtains in Nigeria. Do some of us know the history of men like david Mark? Is David Mark , today , not the third most powerful Nigerian alive? This election should have humbled some of us into realising that our pontification is for each other and not necessarily in line with the thinking of average Nigerians .

Some buhari fans , for example, bragged that the Buhari tsunami will hit the SW . What happened in reality? Abeg let us stop the arrogance . It has been proven that most of us are simply elitist in thinking with no clue of the mindset of those on the ground . Anyone who thinks Ribadu , while still young , cannot be made into the next 'hottest thing' is simply not talking about Nigeria. What is it that Jonathan has not done wrong ? Depleted ECA, Teslim Folarin, Ogun impeachment debacle, Anenih et al as campaign manager , death of halliburton trial, disappearance of IBB's indictment , etc , etc yet Nigerians voted for him well . Abeg Ribadu will be alright Ojare .

i beg to differ with you on the bold part.
I don't think we are idealistic.
we simply choose not to be short sighted.

i agree with you that Ribadu will be fine.
the main reason is that the political class will have realised that is malleable, considering how he was able to comfortably align with BAT and recant his past comments.
If an Andy Uba can be fine, Ribadu just needs to lie more often and he would be fine.
Those whose votes you need to win do not believe in all these talk of integrity that most of us here are bothered with.

the problem is what happens in the long term.

Good for Uba but what has happened to Salisu Ibrahim (the first speaker under this dispenssaton), wabara, Patricia Ette, Ogbulafor, etc?

2011:I Will Take Corrupt Politicians Money For My Campaign- Ribadu…Clears Mrs Jonathan Of Corruption Charges

Friday, 17 September 2010 10:

Barring any last minute change of plan, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Mallam Nuhu Ribadu will next week formally declare his ambition to contest Nigeria’s presidency on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN in next year’s general elections.

Ahead of likely questions that will confront him when his campaign which is being funded by former Lagos governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, kicks off next week, Ribadu told a bewildered gathering of journalists put together by Tinubu in Wuse area of Abuja today that he would not bother himself with the integrity profile of politicians that will sponsor his campaign as long as he would not keep their stolen money in his pocket.

The former anti-graft czar said this to justify his alliance with Tinubu and his decision to allow the former governor fund his presidential campaigns. Recall that Ribadu had in the hollow chambers of the Senate while briefing the lawmakers of his Commission’s anti-corruption activities on September 27, 2006 indicted Tinubu of corruption by describing him as a looter with international dimension.

Though he pleaded with the journalists comprising mainly of bureau chiefs of media organisations in Abuja not to report this aspect of his statement to them, he however gave them the permission of yet another bombshell he dropped to highlight the high degree of contradictions in his personality when he cleared the first lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan of corruption charges.

While answering questions from the media men numbering over 30 at about 12noon at a club house opposite the popular Penniel Apartments in Wuse, Ribadu declared that before he vacated office in 2008 he had concluded investigations into the N104 million and $13.5million money laundering charges against Mrs Jonathan and consequently cleared her of any complicity in the fraud allegations.

He said it was the political opponents of the Jonathan family that magnified the N104 million allegation and also conjured the $13.5 million money laundering case against the first family of Bayelsa then when Jonathan wanted to contest for the state governorship election in 2007.

His claims today however contradicted his earlier statements on some of the controversial issues raised at his media parley today. It will be recalled that Mr Ribadu had pointedly accused Mrs Jonathan of money laundering in 2007 and went ahead to file charges against her at a federal high court in Abuja. The controversy started on September 11, 2006, when the then EFCC spokesman, Mr Osita Nwaja issued a statement to declare that a whopping sum of 13.5 million US Dollars was seized from Mrs. Patience Jonathan, the wife of then Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan. Until now, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has neither made any known public denial of this declaration nor has the EFCC issued any statement of rebuttal.

Quoting Ribadu vertim on this in his testimony before the senate on September 27, 2006, he said “Abia is number one (of corrupt state) not because it is number one alphabetically, but because we have one of the biggest established cases of stealing, money laundering, diversion of fund against Governor Kalu. The governor used his mother, daughter, wife and brother to divert N35billion to build his business empire including Slok Airlines, Slok Pharmaceuticals and newspaper house…Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu corruption is of international dimension.

There is s also a petition against the Governor of Bayelsa’s wife. She was involved in laundering the sum of one hundred and four million into foreign account. She is also being investigated.”

Beyond this claim, Ribadu actually went ahead to file charges in a suit number FHC/ABJ/M/340/06 filed on August 21, 2007 at the Federal High Court, Abuja. In the suit, Ribadu had named Mrs. Patience Jonathan, as an accomplice in the N104million-money laundering case involving Mrs. Nancy Ebere Nwosu. The said money as reveled by the Ribadu-led EFCC then was on the order of Mrs Patience Goodluck, laundered into a First Bank of Nigeria account number 3292010060711 held in the name of Nansolyvan Public Relations Limited by one Hanner Offor. As a result, the EFCC’s affidavit used in supporting the suit’s originating summons, filed by the EFCC prosecuting counsel, Ofem Uket declared that:

“Our investigations revealed that Mrs. Patience Jonathan, wife of the Governor of Bayelsa State, was the person who instructed one Hanner Offor to launder the said sum of N104, 000, 000 into the account of Nansolyvan Public Relations Limited with First Bank of Nigeria Plc (FBN), Niger House, Marina, Lagos.”

In spite of all this documentary evidence authored by Mr Ribadu as EFCC chairman, he has today made a unique summersault by declaring Mrs Jonathan innocent on all the charges!

Tinubu went to Aso to see Jonathan shorthly b4 the Presidential election, he went with Fashola and a few of his lieutenants, but still no mention of Nuhu Ribadu in the whole scenario.

This brings a few questions to mind undecided

1. Is Tinubu so heavy handed that Nuhu fears him?

2. Did Nuhu prefer an alliance with CPC than with PDP?

3. Is Nuhu a fall man for the whole thing and how its worked out, cos I dont see Nuhu working/surving within PDP after all he has said about them

4. Why was Tinubu the man doing all the negotiations when the mandate belonged to Nuhu Ribadu

johnie:
When Bafarwa, Ribadu and Malami showed interest in being the presidential candidate of ACN, they were laughing.

When Bafarawa stylishly complained that he was asked to step down for Ribadu at the ACN primaries, Ribadu was laughing.

He did not think about the yoruba adage: The cane that was used to beat the senior wife is still in the attic and sooner or later will be used on the younger wife.

Now Ribadu has been taught politics 101. Tinubu is laughing.
