A woman like her was lynched and burnt to death and this is what this clout animal is posting? No protest, nothing. Nigeria is the only country in the world where people go about their normal business when crazy and mind bogging abnormalities are happening around them . The nonchalant attitude and short-term memory of the average Nigerian is quite depressing.

Tons of event has happened in the past 4 months, all people do is just make noise, and said the issue will trend on Twitter for 2 days max and that is it. The victims of last month's Kaduna train attack are still in captive and its already business as usual. Anyone still hoping and praying for any type of change in a Dystopia jungle like Nigeria should really consider having his/her head checked.

Hi guys, It has been 6months here already, Pheew. Time truly flies, I tell you. My last post was 2 months ago; you can check that out if you missed it.

Disclaimer: The content of this post is solely my opinion and experiences, which of course, will defer from others.

This is kind of a long post; Apologies in advance, and to avoid decimating the write-up with links, they will be posted at the end under reference and further reading.

Let's get to it

Accommodation scarcity has always been an issue, but recently, it has gone bunkers, like finding accommodation now requires some miracle or sheer luck, especially for Families. I still don't understand why Landlords and letting agents avoid blatantly refuse to rent to families. The story is the same almost everywhere now. I can't even imagine the financial implication and the emotional stress of spending months in a hotel/Airbnb with no end. Single people are not finding it easy either.
It will be better to come alone first to settle and resolve accommodation issues; the family can join later. You don't want to be roaming around with your children in a new environment. The landlords/landladies are also taking advantage of people's desperation by suddenly hiking rent and not supplying necessities. I was able to secure accommodation a month before I came in; I don't even think that is possible anymore.

Accommodation Search Tips :
Get a Uk number ASAP( I downloaded vyke while in Nigeria because I wasn't getting any response via email). Start calling and texting instead of emailing alone.
Register on Zoopla, Rightmove, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, start 'sleeping' on the websites. (Beware of Scam, especially on Facebook, if someone asks you to send an email to the sister, Not available to show house, payment via Airbnb it's 99% scam!!)
Google Agents in your city, go to their office if you are already on ground.
'Collabo' with another family to get a 5/6 bedroom ( demand for them are relatively low )
Some of the jobs on the UK shortage list might be removed soon due to 'oversupply.' So I did some digging and came up with a list of jobs vocations that I think have good prospects; some are still emerging.

Sustainability/Renewable: The Uk and Europe are moving towards renewable and energy sustainable development FAST. The Ukraine Russian war is going to make this move even faster. A degree in anything Related is going to be so worth it.

Business Intelligence/ Data Analyst: I analyzed popular jobs sites(LinkedIn, Totaljobs, indeed, reeds) posts for the 2 years, and these popped up.

AI/ Data Science: Data is the new currency man; applying Machine learning, deep learning, AI algorithms to data will be hot. This is different from Data Analysis; if you don't want to be mediocre, a strong Math/statistics background is essential, or time to learn those matrices and PCA. Ladies, please consider this career path. You are black and female, Double Minority! If you now know your onions again, omo! not every time nursing/public health.

Adult Care/Mental health: According to ons.gov.uk, "In 1999, around one in six people were 65 years and over (15.8%), this increased to one in every five people in 2019 (18.5%) and is projected to reach around one in every four people (23.9%) by 2039" Uk has an aging population, so anything Adult care will remain hot for a long time. You might also want to consider moving to coastal towns/cities according to ons, they elderly your clients prefer to retire to these areas.
Scrum Master: They popped up on my job data analysis

Vocations: I think people are ignoring this. if you can somehow combine school and learning a vocation, Consider these

Exterior Wall Cladding Installation: Due to the Grenfell Fire incident in 2017, the Government mandated exterior wall cladding who are prone to fire removed and changed; in fact, they are giving loans to leaseholder now.
Mechanics, anything electric mobility
Plumbing
HGV instructor: I think the Ukrainian refugee might close that gap though
I will post more in my next write-up, and you can always pivot your career if you are already studying something a little related.

The need for Job experience and good references cannot be overemphasized, I understand some of us are currently working temp jobs to pay the bill, but these Temps jobs can still be purposeful; you can build relationships that could provide future references. That is why it's important to be professional, friendly, and have a good work ethic.
When I first started working, I came from 8:07 to an 8:00 shift, and the Manager said, 'oh, it's nice of you to join us' 7 mins o finally, my mouth was wide agape. The other time I received a query for taking 40mins instead of a 30mins break; there was absolutely nothing to do at work that day. I had to adjust. Being prompt is very important, so try to factor uncertainties like bus delays into your work commute/appointments. Also, don't just do the barest minimum; I sometimes stay back after my shift to help out colleagues. My phone is put off while at work while others fidget theirs. These little things get noticed, trust me.

Incorporate listening to local news (BBC, telegraph, sky, Economist) into your routine during your commute to school or work. This can help integrate a little faster; you want to keep abreast of news and policy in your new 'home,' let the instablognaija and Naija twitter rest for a minute. The news also serves as a good conversation point between school mate/colleagues.

I wouldn't lie to y'all, combing work and school is not for the faint-hearted, it gets really busy with no time to do any other thing, but please try to find time to develop a hobby, Go to the gym, go for a ride, party sometimes, in fact, if football is your thing, attend some game, if you can afford the ticket. I know Nigerians are not big on mental health, but please take time to balance out the stress. It is easy to get lost in a routine of just work-school. The good news is, all the hard work will be well worth it in no distant time. Don't be dismay.

Unfortunately, guys, the 'yahoo boys,' or is it men, have started trooping in en masse. I don't understand how grown-ass men, 36years + with families, are still doing fraud. For goodness sake, Nigerians already have a battered and soiled reputation; this set of people will make it worse. In as much as I am praying and hoping for y'all to get caught, the ripple effect of headlines like " Nigerian man arrested for ..... " on people like me who are constantly busting their ass every day and giving this our all cannot be quantified. Please, biko Abeg , in the day of whoever you serve, STOP!! Don't ruin this opportunity for others. Apart from fraud, these guys don't even pretend to be interested in the schooling that got them here.

I received some pm last time, guys. I'm also a JJC like you. I really don't think I can be of much help. Ask your questions on this thread and the other Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant thread. You can also use the search option. These threads are info-rich. I used to follow them bumper to bumper, but these days I barely have time to visit, So I follow these OG's; it is easier to just catch up on their posts.

Politics / Re: Reps Reject Bills To Stop Children Of Public Officers From Schooling Abroad by johnsonpal: 8:26am On Mar 04, 2022
The faster the people realized Buhari/the presidency is not the problem, the better. Nigeria's foundation is fragile, with inept policies and even a more rather abysmally at best implementation. The 1999 constitution needs a revamp pronto. I'm surprised a legislator proposed this bill, that is to tell you that there are actually few people in the government who want progress, but sadly majority will always have the vote. Nigeria is on the brink of collapse; bold and brash bills like this are needed to rescue her.

Why should Buhari or government officials build world-class hospitals when they can always jet out to London/Germany for as a little as a headache?
Why should they resolve ASUU perennial issues and strike when their wards are in far away UK/US ?

Why should they give a f*ck about the country when most of them are British/ American Citizens? (Saraki is British)

You can't put people who don't have any stake and nothing to lose in charge of the government and expect change.

Buhari shamelessly announces his medical vacation to the Uk every time; it's unheard of anywhere in the world. Even if other countries' presidents are going on medical tourism, they wouldn't have a photo op and hero like sent forth and reception. These people are brazen because they know Nigerians are toothless; all we do is make stupid noise online. To prove to you, Nigerians are without molars and spineless. Just assume Garri, the commonest of food becomes 5000 per modu next week, People will only wail and shout for like 3 days and start buying after with prayers like " God will provide" etc.

" Push an average human to the wall; they will turn back and fight for their future, but not Nigerians; in fact, We will rather dig a hole in the wall and enter."

Social Media a place where people share their lives with people that don't even care. What is the rationale behind showing strangers on the internet that don't give a rat ass that you are happy, sad, rich? just because for likes and comments ? Why do we seek people validation so much in this generation ? The extreme rate people go to trend online these days is quite alarming. From fake concocted stories , to borrowing clothes and what not, to fake bs twitter bants, to the unnecessary rudeness just to claim savage. You can't even go on a lunch date in peace without someone busy updating snapchat with the food and location. Omo! this generation !!

Hey guys, my last post was 2months ago. it's now 4 months of being here in the UK. And I have made it a point of duty to unlearn, learn, relearn, adapt as fast as possible. of course, I'm still a JJC

Disclaimer: This post is strictly my opinion, thought, and experience so far, which of course will be different from others.

This might be a little long so I apologize in advance

so let get to it.

In my last post I talked about finance, let me buttress my point a little more. I was able to work full time during the Christmas holiday which is different from the 20hrs/weekly you can work during school term. I had a 3 weeks Christmas break and I worked 9hrs daily for 14 days. I Would have worked daily for the entire week but unfortunately, I couldn't get more shifts.

Pay was 11/hr
11 * 9hrs = 99
99 * 14 = 1367 (Not that bad yeah?)

So working full time during holidays you can average say 2,000(if you can get and pull crazy hours)

If your school has a flexible payment plan, that stretches in between holidays, then maybe you can save up to pay 50% of your tuition. I still think there is no way you can pay 100% of the school fees even with unlimited holiday hours.
Don't forget you have other bills (rent, transport, feeding, etc ).

It's no news that the UK is practically dashing out visas to EVERYONE, ok, maybe not everyone let's say 90% of the people applying for the tier 4 student visa, and remember it's not just Nigeria, Indian, Vietnam, all over! so don't for one moment think that the UK government being benevolent with its student visa is 'grace', it's simply business for them.
After Brexit, the government is trying to bring money into their country, and they have succeeded greatly with the international students' tuition fees amounting to billions of pounds being pumped into the economy. The 2 years post-graduate is just an incentive to achieve this.

Now understand that the requirement to stay on in the UK after your 2 years post-graduate for most of us lies solely on landing a job, not just any type of job, a job that will be willing and ready to apply for you to stay.

Let's talk facts.

The competition for Jobs is going to be very fierce and this is even saying it lightly. We also need to consider Covid.
To understand how many people are coming into the UK for "study" right now, check these BBC links.

Student Accommodation Scarcity in the UK

https://www.google.com/search?q=uk+student+accomodation+scarcity&rlz=1C1JZAP_enGB983GB983&oq=uk+student+accomodation+scarcity+&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i64.7052j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

There is massive accommodation scarcity in almost all Universities cities. So what is plan B, C?? how do we stand a better chance of landing these Jobs?

1 . Research, Research: There is a job shortage list that is regularly updated, Go to jobs websites(indeed, totaljobs, Linkedin), look at what is trending for the past year, look at the skills employers are looking for and somehow align your course with it.

Don't just study anything all because you want to leave Nigeria, What are the prospect of your course in landing a job in a fiercely competitive job market?

btw, for people studying MSc law, what is exactly the plan? I genuinely mean no offense, I'm just really curious

2. Develop yourself, even studying a relevant course is not assurance. Get practical skills. The major things employers look for here are Skills and experience. Apply for that internship, build that portfolio, Volunteer. Just Do everything possible to gain that experience.

3. Please don't be mediocre, if it only excels you know thoroughly, it's better than knowing bits of everything. btw, I think everyone should learn Excel, Coursera and Udemy are offering free courses.

4. Network as much as possible, join Linkedin. attend conferences, seminars if you can, register for school job fare Register on meetup.com, there are free events around your city, attend. Don't be too busy working your temp jobs and forget to plan for what is coming.

======================

Now, Plan B, C, so after doing all these say no job is forthcoming a year after your study. *God forbid* We all know that going back to Nigeria is almost not on the table for a lot of people.

- IF you are single, then, Good for you, Find real love, legally o!!

- Startup/investor Visa, I don't know much about this, but it is worth looking into.

- Continue with your Canada Pr process, your Msc should increase your score at least. (Most of dumped this when it was taking forever)

- Look into other countries, Australia, New Zealand

Lastly, Please try to do everything in your power not to break the term of your visa, like not attending lecturers, Examination misconduct/ plagiarism( I still don't understand why some people are paying people in Nigeria to do their assignments and projects for them. How can you be paying this much tuition fee and you wouldn't want to at least learn something. The lecturers here are always ready and available to help. I understand some of us are stressed from work, and not interested in school, but abeg try to edit those assignments you get from them" Machinery".
Plagiarism/Examination Misconduct is a big deal here o.

Again, Don't work more than 20hrs during school sessions. These guys will be looking at everything with microscopic eyes when it's time because of the population.

I know I'm not experienced enough to be dishing out advice, so let's just say this is me thinking out loud and in no way am I discouraging anyone from coming.

Your Dear brother reporting live from the frontline grin.

I grew praying for unmerited favor - Getting Jobs, Contract and so on that you are not qualified for nor deserved. Look around you a lt of people are in a position that they are least qualified for, how do we expect progress then? And isn't this unfair to people who have worked hard to be qualified ? Is this not encouraging laziness and mediocrity ??

Let Examine some bible Verses :

Psalm 91:7 : Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. (New Living Translation). So it's OK for your neighbors, 10, 000 people infact to just die but as long as it doesn't affect you , all is well yea??

Romans 9:13 : Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
This statement was made by God even before both of them were born, So does it mean God can just hate you for absolutely no reason whatsoever? An unborn child can't commit a sin right ?

Also let's consider Genesis 27 :23
Jacob cat-fished his brother an received the blessings meant for him , and yet God was happy with him. Isn't lieing and cheating a sin ??

Let;s discuss

Thanks a lot sir for sharing your experiences. What if one does not have to pay for accomodation( probably he or she will be staying with a relative) and food as well?
Can you report if the situation could be a little bit more manageable?
House rent/ Feeding and transportation take a big chunk of monthly income, so obviously, you would be able to save more if you don't have to bother about them, albeit I think you should still make a plan anyways you don't want to overstay your welcome with your host.

Hi guys, Today makes it exactly my 2 months in the UK. Here are MY honest opinions. Please note te I'm not anyway discouraging anyone from coming o, In fact, come and see yourself.

I think the UK is a little overrated, yes, there is stable light and whatnot, yes, this is an advanced country, the system works, but honestly, I don't know how to explain this in detail, Let just say I am not that impressed

Most of us are coming via school so here

School:

School is no joke here, especially if you are coming for masters, The Assignment doesn't stop. It will most likely take soo much work to be able to work part-time and come out with a very good grade.

Finance :
You can not, at least most likely pay your school fee or balance while working part-time. I see a lot of people rushing schools with 2k, 1k deposits, and hoping they will pay the almost 95% or so left while working. It's practically impossible. I'm still a JJC but I have been able to work three types of jobs s, Btw, these are the common part jobs(warehouse, cleaning, social care, "hospitality" ). Amazon is currently paying the highest of 11/hr(if you working the night shift ).

So a quick breakdown.

The cheapest school fee is between 9 - 11k (Hull teeside, the Cheapest school I have seen ).let say you pay a max 4k deposit and your school fee is 9,000. You have a balance of 5k to pay right?

You work Amazon 20hrs weekly earning 10.50/hr that is 207/Weekly and 828/Monthly

Expenses: Rent(Depending on location), Transporation, Feeding

Say you can save half of this after monthly expenses, It would take you at least 11 months to save up your school fee balance of 5000 pounds. Side note, Most schools have a payment schedule, some 50% before enrollment, 25 % after 2 months, and 25% middle of your program. For a one-year course. I haven't seen a school that will spread it over 11 months. (might be wrong though )

This simple calculation is for the cheapest of schools and some form of extreme savings. Even though you can work unmetered during holidays, will your school give you that grace?

Schools will report you to the home office(You don't want to have any issues with the homeoffice) if you can't meet up with the school fee schedule, I have 2 guys in my school currently facing this issue. Some schools are nice though, (maybe I will compile a list of such schools later)

My advice: 1. Before you pay that school deposit, Ask questions about their payment plans and schedule.
2. Pay at least 70% of your school fee before leaving Nigeria, the stress that comes with worrying about money here is crazy
3. Get married - yeah if you can ( Your spouse can work unlimited hours while you school, )

Life: People are generally very nice here, don't mistake their nicest and warmth for another thing o. I have a story to share about this later

Clothing: Please get pairs of very comfortable shoes, like the emphasis on very! you will be walking a lot ( Buses wouldn't take you to your doorsteps and Taxis are expensive), well some people are very loaded. For the average person like me so ditch your brogues and heels for trainers. most people here wear trainers anyways. Get warm clothing. it really gets cold and they say it's not even winter yet.

Work: This place will humble you, coming from a corporate background to washing dishes and standing for 10hrs in an amazon warehouse. This has been a very humbling experience for me. Side note: Most temps jobs require you to stand all for hours, see why you need those comfortable shoes.

It's also tempting to work more than 20hrs weekly, but please DON'T!

Again, Please get your finances right, and have a reasonable plan in place. You are practically on your own here, no one cares.

Final note: I don't understand why Nigerians here are cold and unwelcoming(it's only on nairaland I see people going far and beyond). Make friends with the Indians(they are so helpful to one another it makes me jealous) and local if you can

Again, these are my opinions and personal experience, it necessarily might not be others. Good luck

Please no front page!!

I need mature advice guys, I am 28yrs old, first born of 3. I have been responsible for myself as long as I can remember and partly responsible for my siblings too. A week doesn't go by without my Dad not requesting for money for one project/debt to another and most times I do but of recent it getting too much, it not like i'm rich or something, I am just trying to make something out of myself but this demands is causing a serious strain on me mentally. Note, I am responsible for my siblings too.

My sisters wedding was barely 2 weeks ago and I was responsible for over 50% of the cost, my plan after the wedding I will be allowed to atleast breath before the request start coming in again so I thought, just this morning I woke to missed call and texts from my father requesting for 60k for his house projects. I can't even remember this man EVER giving me 10k for myself, He is always emotionally blackmailing him because he sent me to a private uni(he barely paid the school fees then).

Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by johnsonpal: 1:56pm On Oct 31, 2018
My profile
Computer science
3.6/4 (WES done)
TOEFL - 99
2 years of unrelated experience(just trying to get back)

Hey guys, I have been a silent follower on here for quite a while now. I finally took the GRE some weeks ago and I'm so sad and highly disappointed by my performance, It just below Par.
Preparation was for almost 3 months albeit abysmal. I kept procrastinating doing practice test till I eventually didn't do any.My not getting a reasonable score was all my fault.
Q 143 V 142 AWA 3.0
My faults
1. Not doing practice tests
2. Not leaning enough vocabs, I was only able to learn 300 or so satisfactoryly
3. Timing, I was slow
4. I left quite a number of questions unanswered, thinking I would come back to them, sadly, I couldn't
New plan
Will be retaking January
- Watch all magoosh video (I have a premium account)
- Do Atleast 5 practice tests
- Practice timing
-Improve vocabulary learning
And lastly, review the materials I used before

Manhattan 8books
Kaplan
Official ets guide 3rd edition
Manhattan 5lb
Nova math Bible
Princeton

So guys there is my story, please I need all the help I can get. Study plan, Materials I should consider, Schools Recommendation, Everything, Please

WES Updated Document Requirements for Nigeria

On August 3, 2018, WES modified the document requirements for applicants seeking to have their Nigerian academic credentials evaluated. In accordance with this change, WES applicants must submit their high school documents for all evaluations of post-secondary study at Nigerian institutions.

If you submitted a WES application and received a WES Reference Number prior to August 3, 2018, this change does not affect you. WES will contact you by email if additional documents are required. In the meantime, you can monitor the status of your documents and credential evaluation through My Account.

Who Is Affected by This Change?
This change affects all WES applications of Nigerian credentials submitted on or after August 3, 2018. This means that applicants must have their secondary school documents sent to WES, regardless of the level of education they want to have evaluated.
