jl115: Russia is not one of South Africa's major trade partners in fact they make up less than 1% of our imports and exports...
Also with the sanctions imposed on Russia(and obviously Ukraine being at war) it opens up great opportunities for our Gold, copper, alliminum and palladium industries to pick up the supply vacuum caused by the sanctions....this however is just short term gains thanks to the higher than expected commodity prices and it will eventually fade. Same thing wrt to our grain industry
In the long term a drawn out conflict might also benefit South Africa simply due to its geographical and geopolitical position....risk wise SA would look much safer to investors than Europe quite possibly even safer than Australia due to. Australia's closeness with NATO and the China Taiwan tension.
Our current economic problems might just be outweighed by the sudden advantages mentioned above...that and SA has half decent infrastructure which would look attractive for foreign investors all of a sudden
There are no sanctions on Russia's Gold, oil and Aluminum, copper and palladium... Infact Europe and even the US can't do without them..
Secondly, you already have buyers for all of those commodities and they are not things that you can just get up and increase production.. it takes time and investment.
popizaino: So is there any on grand by the Government to relocate them cus buying those arts and crafts at Oxford Street is definitely not an option. I don't want obroni price.
There was a plan to relocate them to another place I've forgotten where
jl115: unpopular opinion, I think the Russia-Ukraine conflict might actually benefit the South African economy!!
how ?
If you export to or import from Russia, you suffer because your banks will now have to look for a new clearing house and agree on the currency for the transaction to be done in.
Those who depend on Ukraine for their grain import suffers most because most of Ukraine export facilities are none operational and the world is in a supply chain crisis to make it easy for new suppliers to take the challenge.
GeneralDae: It's like prices are unnecessarily inflated in Accra when it comes to anything real estate or other forms of construction. This project for instance is said to be estimated at a whooping 10 Billion dollars. It's there something unique about this project they ain't telling us.
yes it's a huge project that covers the entire land space that you see in the video, not just the shopping space... The project has several residential properties and office spaces going up at the other end of the land
As for real estate prices, it's been going up for the last 10 years. The steam it's been running on seem to be picking up more speed.
GeneralDae: But then Just 40, even in America how many rich people can afford to pay that for a night? Except you are saying Ghana attracts many upper middle class folks or some corrupt politicians. Do you also think that place would be worth the price?
. I've not seen it to know if it is worth it... But at this rate, it better come with it own indoor pool and fully equipped gym
I don't know the class of people who rent it but I know that these places are mostly fully booked during seasons and most weekends... Sometimes by students
gallivant: If it's true, the government has to step in with rent controls and legislation to scare the property developers or owners. That's just too much money, even for the rich!
well, the rich pays without flinching ....
You're asking for something dictatorial not done anywhere..
Ultimately it is the consumer that determine the price they are willing to pay for anything.. Ie. Market forces plays a part.
Govt can only set a ceiling rate and a minimum rate.
theenchanter: it's possible, that's Ghana. Don't forget the cedis redomination.
The last central bank program I went for (this previous Wednesday) they chipped in the falling rate of ghc against the dollar and appreciated cbn for ruling redomination out.
I even heard they, in their words "dollarised" the Ghanaian economy. Meaning, they do transact in dollar in corporate business, all in the guise to attract foreign investors but it's really killing the local currency.
real estate is always transacted in dollars though. That's the nature of that market.... Mostly coverted from dollar rates to any country local currency
ChangetheChange: That's the end of Russia Economy, even the Russian military will overthrow Putin by the time cash crunch begins to hit the Russian Economy by next week
you don't seem to know what you are talking about.... That is the end of the petrol dollar system
some of you really need to know what is currently happening
The world is being run by mad people currently who are itching for a war with Russia and for the better part of 10 years, it's been worse.
Now crazy Biden has gotten the Ukrainian war he's been wishing for since the Obama era when all matters of Ukraine was left to him.
Let's see how far he will drag it on by building Zelensky ego. Meanwhile the Russians seem to be running out of patience and are moving in thermobaric weapons to burn down Kyiv..
If you are a smart leader of Ukraine like his predecessors, won't you implement the MINSK agreement to ensure your neutrality and protect your people from unnecessary death?
The Russians don't care if you join the EU or not... But since Russia is your largest trading partner, it will be wise to lean economically towards them.
If you want to be a good neighbor to the very same country that agreed for you to become a Republic and guaranteed your sovereignty.... Will you go and set a fire behind their window and claim that it is on your land so you can do whatever you want?
Ayemileto: US is compelling Ukraine to join NATO, or face sanctions? WTF did you get this from?
Did you even know there are standard requirements to join NATO and Ukraine does not currently meet those requirements?
It gives them a sense of protection.
If Georgia was part of NATO, will Russia invade them in 2008?
If Ukraine is already part of NATO, will Russia invade them now?
If Finland is already part of NATO, will Russia be threatening them now?
How did US overthrow the legitimate government?
Did US force the Ukrainian parliament to vote for impeachment?
Did you even know the vote was Unanimous, as even the president's party members didn't vote for him to remain in office? As in, he didn't even have a single vote.
Or is it the US fault that he failed to properly manage the many months of protests that eventually became bloody and led to his impeachment?
Kindly educate me on how US "overthrow" the government, because to the best of my knowledge, he was impeached by his country's parliament.
As if you don't know the play book of the US....
How do you think they forcing Germany to host forces and missiles despite Germany refusal or how do you think they are trying to Compel Germany to remove Russia from SWIFT despite the fact that it will hurt the German economy more than Russia?
Yes I know that there are standard requirements for NATO with Ukraine doesn't meet but Russia will not wait for the day that Ukraine finally meet them.
It this point Where Russia feel like it Security is threatened... There's not going to be peace in Europe until those element are removed and it doesn't matter who is in NaTO or not.
You should go and read the Russians security demands. The Russians are currently using the Madman doctrine right now.
They will match on Romania and threaten the world with nuclear war by threatening New York and London. You think the US will go to Nuclear war over Romania to watch New York in flames? The mad man Schwab at Davos and his Davos crowd who are ruling the western world in their current craziness will not want that.
Remember the Cuban missile crisis..? The world is on a similar path.
If you don't know what happened in 2014, atleast go and read about it and stop asking questions that does not relate.
Ayemileto: My response isn't about what the war is about, but about the reason why Russia's neighbours wants to join NATO, and why they are justified in doing so.
Read the comment I quoted, then read my comment to get the full picture.
The reason is very simple .. The US is compelling them to do it or face sanctions..
While most of those decisions does not benefit any of those countries militarily ...
Since you claim to know history, for the most part of a 1000 years, Russia have had to go to war to defend most of these European countries while Russia came under attack so many times being invaded.
The US purposely change the rules based system to overthrow Ukraine legitimate govt and install a puppet that will allow them place missiles on Ukrainian soil just like they've done in Poland and Romania... In most cases, Russia have redrawn untill now when they drew the red line.
The US cannot believe their eyes that Russia is changing the rules base system and forcing them to react.
From this point onwards, you're going to see a more assertive Russia... When they are done with Ukraine, their next focus will be on Romania and Poland.
Go read up their history, they've done this same stuff to almost all their neighbours in the past.
China, Finland and many other countries sharing borders with them have lost territories to them in the past, and they currently have disputed territories with both China and Japan.
Should I also remind you how they invaded Georgia in 2008 (with Georgia declaring a one-sided ceasefire) and established two new countries or how they annexed Crimea in 2014?
Is it NATO that made to be high handed towards their neighbours, thereby pushing those ones to seek refuge in NATO?
The reason all their neighbours are running away from them is because of their regular bullying and aggressive nature. If they've been peaceful all along, all their neighbours won't be looking to join NATO just to be safe from them!!!
CoronaVirusPro: The have resumed attack and Ukraine still holding. Is that the Russia that wants to fight USA? lol
If Nuclear taken off the table. Russia cannot even win a war against Each of Germany, Japan or France
Can’t you see their outdated tanks on TV?
The kremlin dwarf called Putin made history yesterday. His military lost 6 jets in less than 24 hours, and all shot down by same Ukrainian pilot
Are you trying to say, you want to see the ruthless devastation the Russians give to Syrian terrorist inflicted on Ukraine ( a country they share blood with)……?
They've been a bit reserved in this fight and yet they still got to Kyiv in 10 hours.
rvp2018: Don't you have mental hospital in Ghana or do they give them internet access..in Kenya we have mathare mental hospital where people like you are treated
They are mostly empty because we don't have mad people like you around...
You might want visit M*athare in Kenya for some mental treatment because you're such a lunatic.
Anyway, the question is there for you to answer.... You will definitely avoid it like a plaque
Develope that shitty country so you don't come up here making excuses for the lack there off
rvp2018: Spending 100M on a single interchange is grand looting. This road has 10 interchanges.
The interchange has the same length of road as the nonsense you've spent a billion dollars on..
Lies and propaganda spoon fed to you, that road has no interchange except the existing interchanges before it was constructed. You got a raw deal to justify the cost
Vixlot: Ukrainian Air Force chief says they have shot down a Russian IL-76 transport plane with paratroopers on board south of Kyiv believed to have 145 Russian forces on board
