I'd like to consider myself as a security-conscious person and to an extent, this has kept me safe from attacks or harassment. For example, I try as much as possible to be home with my family before 7pm.

The bottom line is that the country I saw growing up has greatly changed. You dare not move around at night. If police doesn't harass you, armed robbers might. And is they don't, your street rouges might 'obtain' you.

However, general outdoor security is not my concern at this point. Beyond building a house, how are you practically securing it?

The reason for this thread is because I am building and by my calculations, I intend moving in by February. Now, the problem is that the area is still sparsely populates. Whilst other buildings are ongoing, I have just two neighbours. One has been there for 3 years and the other who is not steady for over a year.

I asked about their experiences and true to my fears, there have been incidents of armed robbers trying to break in and threatening to shoot them.
I also interacted with the workers on my site and there have been incidents of these hoodlums openly stealing phones and breaking in in their numbers (over 30) at night.

If I was alone, I wouldn't have been bothered but I have a young family to look out for.

So, my question is what practical ways are you using to protect your property from intruders and then those who manage to get in?

I have considered getting dogs, installing an alarm system, introducing booby traps, and getting a weapon.

Infact it was brought to my site by the client and when I rejected it, the supplier claimed I'm not happy because I wasn't buying materials

@ point 3. My site engineer recommended I buy condemned sharp sand instead of laterite for filling. So, this will be the end result. Thanks man.

From 2 million up. You'd be lucky to see at 1.5 million though. But be wary of areas close to the stadium. Someone tried to seel government land to me.

If you have to buy granite, I'm very sure you will spend up to 400k on a standard soakaway.

The aboki in PH insisted 32k last. Someone else insisted 35k. Just to transfer soakaway laterite to fill foundation they are calling 20k. I will go and do it myself.

Bros, You can reduce costs.

1) 9" Blocks around Elelenwo, Igbo Etche, Eleme, even Rumokoro is 170 for stone dust and 160 for ordinary. 6" solid is same price. I still bought yesterday.

2) cement is 2500.

3.) Except your land is a swamp, you dont need 35 lengths.

4.) Buy 1 small trip of sharpsand and 1 small trip of plaster sand. It won't finish.

Labour can be reduced too.

Carpentary will also cost you about 40k or thereabout

Thanks man. We've started digging today and surprisingly someone was there to help me cut the cost.

For the blocks, I am settling for vibrated 6'' solid. The thing about the cement is I pay in bulk close to the site and they deliver 1 or 2 as the workers demand for it. The store is close to the site. This way, I don't have to deal with rain or no rain.

For point 4. Someone said I should buy sharp sand and add a little gum sand.

I was on site today and I am happy with the level of progress made. Today makes it day for and I believe the foundation must have been raised to dpc level (5 coaches).

The soakaway/septic tank is already been dug with the assurance that it will be ready by tomorrow. If there's time, blinding for the soakaway will be done tomorrow as well.

I am however not happy about the numerous payments involved in obtaining permits to build here. So far, I have spent over 200k on payments. Another group came today and I may have to spend an extra 130-150k.

Hello gurus and builders in the house.

Like most Nigerians, my dream is to own my own house, irrespective of how small. As long as I have a secured place to lay my head at the end of the day and never have to worry about rent, some burden would have been lifted.

I currently pay almost 300k for a 1 bedroom apartment. My intention is to get my house to a livable stage before my rent expires or at best, 6 months after it does. My landlord is a kind man and he may be willing to accept 6 months payment.

Now to the issue on ground, I know most people are eager to build and are afraid of the cost. To be honest, my plan was to do this in 2 years but now that I have started, I think it's possible to get this done in a year.

I purchased half plot of land measuring 226 sqm and I have started building a 3 bedroom bungalow on it. All rooms ensuite.

In the next sections, I'll post how much we've spent so far and how much we will be spending. The project began 2 days ago.

I also want to ask. Has anyone attempted to use this biodigester instead of a septic/soakaway tank?

Does it work? What's the durability and cost implication?

It depend on location, dept and how wide it is, my brother constructed one and its almost close to 500k. Perhaps due to the fact that we planed to use the top for car park, which make us erect column, beam and solid slab.

How recent was this? I don't have any intention to park a car there. I just want it to be safe enough for children to walk on or even play over.

Location is PH. I think the dimension is 8*10 and 11 feet deep or so. I'll confirm that from the engineer.

But here's the breakdown:

When I decided to kickstart the project, I turned to Nairaland to gather experiences from experts and previous building projects and to prepare my budget.

So after completion, I decided to add to the wealth of info here (especially 2020 prices) for others.

Best time for building a soakaway is January when the harmattan is max

Challenges faced include limited space (2ft from main building and a low fence), filled up pit (full of clothings, iron and other refuses) that must be excavated and evacuated.
The top of the soakaway would be a drive-in car park and a sit out veranda, therefore need for good reinforcement (iron, granite and good mix)

PVC is what I use in the USA. I haven't used it yet in Nigeria due to cost since it's not commonly used.

PVC is quieter, seals better and has better eco footprint.

I can't speak for the seemingly lack of lintel here.

@op. I don't know if anyone has told you this but please, there is nothing you can do to change him. I am married and one primary lesson that I have learned is that you can never change anybody. Marriage does not change the character of people, rather, it amplifies it. Once the love has cleared you will start to see things you never thought were there.

So, if you've weighed your boyfriend and seen that you won't be able to manage this in marriage, I beg you to leave now. A broken courtship is better than a broken marriage or a broken head.

Finally, all men are possessive. I am too. But it takes understanding and logical reasoning to know when your partner won't be available. Good luck.
