The Home Secretary is set to announce a major shake-up of the immigration and asylum system later this month.

Shabana Mahmood will model some of her new measures on the Danish system - seen as one of the toughest in Europe.

It is understood officials have been looking at Denmark's tighter rules on family reunion and restricting most refugees to a temporary stay in the country.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2lknr2d3go

...For those who say that the government encourages the boat crossings and is very soft on asylum seekers.
But most people who have been successfully granted asylum when fleeing conflicts are now only allowed to remain in the country on a temporary basis

Temporary basis means? 2 or 3 yrs? What happens if the individual get married to a British citizen? .

I'll take you serious only when you or your family members relocate to those communities under attack. You stay in your safe environment and you dismiss the cry for help from the victims.

You think the Nigerian government who are thinking of winning 2027 will go hard on the fulani terrorists that would upset their base? Are you this naive? Why haven't they done it for more than a decade?

Yes, America war on terror hasn't been a success in most places but it doesn't mean it will fail in this case. All cases aren't the same. Even if it fails, the victims have nothing more to lose cos they are already being wiped out gradually. He who is on the ground fears no fall.

Something else has to be done to try to stop this madness and I don't care where it is going to come from. Saving the lives of the victims is more important than the politics of the people involved at this point. How else do you want me to say this?

Say it with your thinking cap on and say it without emotion.

You knew that American war on terror never worked but some how you want them to use Nigeria as their next killing field?

So following your “logic”, let the status quo of killings continue unabated because it is only the inept Nigeria government that can take action (issue that started since 2009). Trump and other Nigerians calling for intervention be damned. Like many have said, no one cares about the pretext, just let the killings stop. Thousands killed under Tinubu govt alone. Not to talk of kidnapping and banditry.

Also please stop the red herring talk of invasion or a ground offensive; the US can send drones or missiles to take out the terrorists in the camps and enclave without one soldier setting foot on Nigerian soil. Please wake up my brother. People are dying!

No you need to wake up because you have been in coma since 2003, America has never won any war on terror whether troop on ground or by air strike, America has never bring peace and security to any country they engaged militarily.

They will fail miserably in Nigeria the same way to failed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria etc. Boke haram and other militant groups will be even stronger by the time America withdraw in shame leaving Nigeria in pieces

Let's be practical here. Whats the solution?

What should I tell someome who has seen their family nembers r**ped, killed, kidnapped, burnt alive? To wait and hope? I have seen folks who had their whole family wiped out and only escaped via a stroke of luck.

For all intents, Trump may be using this to bully Nigeria into subservience given our refusal to acquiesce to his plan to deport untethered folks to Nigeria- a move which might have given other African nations the nerve to say no. Or perhaps, he is trying to shift attention from his turbulent dip at the polls.
All said, as much as I despise Trump, given what I've seen, I cannot in all honesty tell folks caught up in this to sit and wait.
I have stated the solution here before and my view on that hasn't changed.

Trump doesn't give a toilet brush about Christians in Nigeria or human life in general, the current Nigerian govt and previous administrations have failed Nigeria but they are the only one that can fix this mess.

If the American military forces start operation in Nigeria the situation will get worst, more ''cherished Christians'' will die and peace and security will be a distant memory

Did you just say Nigerian government is the solution? Are you being sarcastic?
For decades nigerian government has been pampering these fulani terrorists while they kept killing upon killing with no end in sight. The same government crushes any other threat in any other part of the country but won't ever go hard on these special terrorists.
It is easy to sit in the comfort of your safe cities in the south or abroad and be saying no to foreign military intervention, please ask people in the line of fire crying for help for decades without any if they give a damn about foreign military intervention.
Nobody likes a foreign military intervention in their country but if your country is useless and can't protect you and will never protect you at least we have seen this evidence for more than a decade then no big deal about foreign military intervention.
If these terrorists killing Christians are also killing Muslims as claimed then doesn't it mean eliminating these terrorists also end the killing of Muslims? Will it not also benefit the Muslim community who are also victims? What is the brouhaha all about?
Two things can be true at the same time. Trump is a werey, I'm not his fan and can never be his fan. But if his intervention whether by threats or an actual strikes is going to stop these unnecessary killings in the middle belt, I'll take it irrespective of his motives. For goodness sake, there are people who have lost their families and can't go near their communities anymore cos they have been captured by fulani terrorists and we are still here debating, where was nigerian government all these while?
No i'm not, i'm dead serious, the solution to the killing falls on the feet of Nigerian govt and not American military intervention.

American politicians and Trump have used the figure 100,000 Christians killed in Nigeria since 2009 , that figure is from InterSociety, the same organisation reported that in the same period 60,000 "moderate Muslims" also died, did you hear Trump and his bootlickers mentioned that? No, do you have any idea how many American died of mass shooting last year alone? 711 , in 2023 average of 18,854 , figure for 2021 is 48,830 , why haven't the American govt stopped mass shooting by simply restricting gun ownership?

OdogwuEkeke:
Hello Nairalanders,

I hope everyone is doing well.

I've been surprised to see many people still considering the UK study route. While it's ultimately your decision, I want to share a few things that agents and universities might not tell you.

First, many UK universities are facing financial difficulties as international students reconsider the UK. For instance, the University of Derby is running a £40 million deficit and laying off over 200 staff. This instability can affect your experience.

Second, the stress here is different from what we're used to in Nigeria. You will work hard for every penny, and without serious discipline, saving will be a major challenge. The pressure is real—I've sadly lost two friends to stress-related issues here. If you do come, please make your health a priority.

Furthermore, immigration rules are constantly changing. There are talks of reducing the post-study work visa to 18 months. Ask yourself: Do you have enough transferable skills to secure a sponsored job in that tight window? Moving abroad is a marathon, not a sprint. The journey doesn't end with getting a visa or boarding the plane. How will you manage repayments when you're limited to 20 hours of work per week? The truth is, 20 hours is rarely enough, and it will be tough.

If you were my younger sibling, I would not advise you to come to the UK. I would instead suggest Europe, where you're almost certain to get a passport within five years. The only catch is learning a language—which is a valuable skill for your resume.

Enough of my rant. Here’s what I suggest:

Option A: Focus on Other Countries
Consider countries like Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, or New Zealand. After five years of work, you can typically get a passport. You'll also have access to the entire Schengen area. It’s often cheaper than the UK, and the path to citizenship is more certain.

Option B: You Really Want to Be in the UK

While sourcing school fees, also save for a car. Get an international driver's license before you arrive, and obtain a full UK license as soon as you can. It is more valuable than your masters, e get why

Get an SIA license- it will help you find flexible, cash-in-hand security jobs.

Focus on in-demand sectors that offer sponsorship, such as HGV (truck) driving or healthcare. Don’t waste time on a degree that won’t help you survive.

Option C: You Just Want a UK Degree

Apply for scholarships that cover everything, including your flight. You can use your time in the UK to activate plans for Canada or any other place, then return to Nigeria after your Master's and prepare for the move.

Consider a Unicaf scholarship to earn a UK Master's from Nigeria. Travel only for graduation, and use that degree to apply for a PhD in a country that offers a clearer path to residency.

Think carefully and plan wisely. All the best.
I will not encourage any foreign student on a limited resource to buy a car, get SIA licence yes but buying a car will cost you more. Road tax, insurance, petrol, parking cost will likely drain your limited income.

Justwise, Nigerians are not getting killed by militants. They are getting killed by Fulani Herdsmen, Islamic Jihadists, and Boko Haram. Let's start by calling a spade what it is first. That said, the killings started in the North with Christians as the main victims. The silence of the Nigeria government, coupled with the supports these terrorists received from some state governors and Islamic leaders like Gumi, made the killings continue, and the Muslims are now becoming victims.

Trump is not starting any religious war in Nigeria. The war started many years back in the North and gradually, it's coming to the South. We need all the external supports we can get to end these ethnic cleansing and religious genocides since our governments, both state and Federal, are highly useless.
They can also be referred to as militants, you can decide to call them by their group name or affiliations.

Again both Christians and Muslims are getting killed, this is not about only Christians ONLY, i will also suggest that more Muslims are getting killed than Christians in the North.

Trumps focus on Christians only is a cynical way to start a religious war, show me a single verifiable report that stated that only Christians are getting killed in the North. JUST ONE. Please don't give a report from InterSociety.

If this military intervention starts it will not start and end in the North, it will spread to the South and the East, even more Christians will be killed.

This is my prayer to you all supporting this military intervention: May you live to see the consequences of what you supported.

Justwise, what's the solution?
Nigerian govt is the solution, the Nigeria govt knew those sponsoring the extremist groups, the Nigerian govt knew how they get amination supply, Nigerian govt can equip our military to get the job done. All these militant groups are political tools in the hands of some northern politicians. We do not need a foreign military intervention.

With the way things are, the killings and desensitisation to them have become too much.

Without being a fan of Trump, the Nigerian government has failed to step up and address this. Yet, our politicians increasingly feed fat. I cannot in all honesty tell someome who has seen their family and many more murdered not to seek help especially if I'm not providing a reasonable alternative.

With what I know about the north and direction of travel so far, this menace may ultimately lead to the end of Nigeria if not well handled.
Totally agreed but military intervention by a foreign govt is never the solution as that never worked anywhere in the world.

American defence contractors are rubbing their hands together now waiting to start selling guns and other aminations to us and laugh their way to the bank. We will pay for this war with our resources while the country is destroyed and the war will never end.

I know two people who had near death experience in the Northern part of Nigeria, and both are Christians. One had his head butchered by Fulani herdsmen in the middle of the night and left him in the pool of his blood. Thank God grace saved him. The second person, a lady, living in southern Kaduna then. While the Islamic Jihadists were on rampage when El-Rufai was the Governor, she took to her heels for safety and had no place to hide save a pit where they already dumped about 30 dead bodies. She jumped in and pretended to be dead. She was there for almost 12 hours before help came.
These ones, and many other Nigerians who were victims have a different opinion from yours. By the way, both of them are in the UK now.

Sure but when American military intervention in Nigeria starts they will share the same opinion with me, throughout the history American military intervention never lead to peace and American never won any war against terrorism, but America have destroyed every single country they went into.

Nigerians are getting killed by militants, both Christians and Muslims, Trump is trying to start a religious war by making it look as if only Christians are getting killed.

However, the tension he is giving Tinubu and the useless APC aides is giving me so much joy. They thought they were untouchables, acting with impunity.

Whether Trump attacks or not, the message is clear. I expect them to sit up and stop junketeering and stop buying off opposition politics to defect to APC (two years before a general election). Kai, I have never seen a more useless Nigerian administration.
I really hope so, probably the only good thing that might come out of this.

Trump does not care about Christians or peace in Nigeria, its all about the natural resource, Muslims are getting killed more than even Christian but he did not mention that., He wants to turn Nigeria to another Iraq in the name of fighting terrorist
TravelRe: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by justwise(mod):
I see many ignorant Nigerians are celebrating this post from one of the dumbest president America has ever elected.

If America is allowed to attack BokoHaram and other militant groups in Nigeria then this is the start of our own Afghanistan, Iraq etc.

American military intervention in any country has never lead to peace, infact all the countries American troop went into is now in the hands of those they went to fight.

The little peace Nigerians enjoy now will be a distance memory if Trump is allowed to carry out this threat.

Hello@justwise

For the US nonimmigrant B1/B2 visa application, refusals under section 214(b).
For the Schengen France short stay visa refusals, 'There are reasonable doubts as to your intention to leave the territory of the Member states before the visa expires.'
Ok so declare all the visa refusals, you got no choice, visa refusal is not the prob, the prob comes when people are not honest about it

I finally reached out to a friend I hadn't heard from in nearly six months, but her line wouldn't connect. She contacted me shortly after via WhatsApp.

After exchanging pleasantries, she asked how life was treating me and what I had been up to. The very next thing she did was ask:

"Please can you assist me with money?"

I responded, "What kind of money?"

She named a figure.

I replied, "Not immediately," and explained the various commitments and emergencies I'd had to deal with over the last 60 days.

So she asked, "Okay, how much can you spare?"

I told her, "You have to give me time, please."

My real question is this: Does it really make sense to sell everything and move to the UK with barely enough funds, only to end up depending on friends and family back in Nigeria to survive? Or should one only move when they have enough of a financial runway—a buffer for emergencies—to last for six months to a year?

Nigerians who have moved to the UK, which side of the divide do you identify with the lady that recently moved to the UK or me back in Nigeria?
You reached out to her first? Well.. i don't think she needs your financial help, she is trying to attack before you do and it worked
