franchasng: Masters in the UK is one year, why is yours two years if I may ask?
If you can be able to pay the whole tuition fee before relocating, then you will be fine but if not, it won't be easy for you, reconsider the move until you have saved up enough money to pay 100% of the tuition fee from Nigeria. Some masters programs are longer than one year especially January staters. |

franchasng: UK's immigration policy on bringing dependents as a student changed since 2022/2023, students can no longer bring their dependent until they are done with school and have secured a job to enable them file for their dependent.
That policy nailed the study route on the cross for low-cash prospective foreign students Students on research masters programs can still bring dependent |

Infotubia9ja: So now we know national insurance is a way you file and pay for taxes while you work and live in the UK. So it means you still have to pay for taxes for the little 20hrs a week international students pay as part of their taxes right? Also I know when you buy anything you pay taxes as well and if you want to watch anything related to television in the UK there is a fee you have to pay and I know for a fact UK is one of the highest paying countries when it comes to paying taxes. Am I correct this time or am I missing something. I’m sorry for quoting you pretty much all the time but it’s important to correct a lot of misinformation coming from you. The UK is not the highest when it comes to tax, not even top 5 in the world. You don’t pay tax in everything you buy in the UK. |

Infotubia9ja: I was making refrence to some bills paid there. But student pays for all others except the council tax but mostly when they file taxes each year more like council tax if we want to put it that way. Television tax fee they pay for. Food and other supplies you pay tax with it And every other thing you pay taxes right Students don't pay council tax at all and they don't pay ANY other tax apart from NI. |

NiceLegs: Hello everyone.
So am in a Telegram group where someone asked this this question.
"I want to study for a 2-year Master Degree in UK. Tution Fee is £17,000 per year. Meaning that I will pay £34,000 for the entire 2 years MSC course. If I pay Tution deposit of £4000 from Nigeria for the first year, can I use 20hrs -per-week work to raise the remaining £13,000 for first year and also pay for the second year? I need advice. "
Most Nigerians in UK started commenting say it is very possible to do it.
A guy said the person can secretly work more than 20hrs per week. That they will not catch the person.
They were telling the person to go ahead.
Some said it was not possible.
Now I am so confused.
This is because somebody I know is in a similar situation.
Please the person needs advice on this.
How can the person do this?
Experienced people abroad especially in UK who have done such 2 year courses, how did you do this? No the person can not do it. Working secretly more than 20hrs a week means doing cash inhand jobs which is illegal too and if caught your visa will be terminated immediately |

Infotubia9ja: I dont know about that but I think it might be doable if you dont have other experiences to pay like rent, council tax, food and groceries, and television tax etc if you have other ways of paying that then you might be able to do it i presume. Again international students don't pay those especially council tax |
Travel › Re: Japa: Can 20hrs-Per-Week Work Pay For A 2-year MSC Course In UK? by justwise(mod): 7:37pm On Sep 26, 2025 |
Infotubia9ja: No it's will not. Firstly it wont be easy for you to find a job just that quick and when you finally luckily do find one as an international student working 20hrs a week, after taxes, you will be left with bread crumbs. Mind you, the UK taxing system is one of the highest. So after pay that money wont be able to cover you house rent monthly talk more feeding before you come to paying your tuition fees. Living abroad sometimes you need to be informed before you take that leap. Unless you have additional monthly source of income, it wont work. And please dont go work extra because if you get caught you just violated your student visa agreement and as such, you are liable for deportation. Please get all the information you need before you make that final decision. Wish you all the best This is not true, students don't tax, they only pay NI |

NosyNursy: If it’s weekly, and almost 45% is chopped in tax, does that not give a reason to vex? The remaining change is what I’m expected to use for bills, rent, food, council tax, etc Speak to your HR, something is wrong somewhere, no one pays that much of tax on that amount. |

Goodenoch: Pension is not a tax though, is it?
You can choose to cancel your contribution at any time (although of course that would be a massively foolish thing for anyone to do).
Anyway, this is definitely not the full story because you would pay 0 PAYE if that was truly your full earnings per month. NI contributions would also be negligible.
Overall, I’m a staunch believer that the UK is not overtaxed. Everything we benefit from (even though we cannot access benefits lol) needs to be paid for - infrastructure, security etc - and it’s very middle of the table compared with many other countries with similar systems: https://taxpolicy.org.uk/2025/06/27/uk-workers-tax-wedge-infographics/ This is true. I was actually thinking that he got paid weekly. |
