Crime › US 'internet Scam Victim' Freed And Nigerians Arrested by justwise(op): 7:50pm On Jun 02, 2012
A US national kidnapped last week in Benin has been freed by security forces and two of his Nigerian abductors arrested, an official has said.

The man, who has not been identified, is believed to have travelled to the West African nation after reportedly being targeted by cybercriminals.

His kidnappers forced him to contact his family for a ransom, police said.

In recent years, there have been a number of foreigners held for ransom in West Africa after internet scams.

Correspondents say they often fall victim to promises of lucrative business opportunities.

Such kidnappings are rare in Benin, but there have been several cases in neighbouring Nigeria.

Pierre Dovonou, an expert on cybercrime based in Benin, told the BBC's Network Africa programme that, as a result of a Nigerian police crackdown on internet fraudsters, many had crossed over the border and were working from the former French colony.

"The kidnapped American has just been found in [the south-west] Mono region and two of his kidnappers, Nigerians, were arrested and are in the hands of the police in Benin," a spokesperson for Benin's interior ministry, Franck Kinninvo, told the AFP news agency.

"He was found with the combined efforts of the FBI and Benin police," Mr Kinninvo said.

The details of the case are unclear, a spokesperson for the US embassy in Nigeria said, AFP reports.

Security sources told Reuters news agency that the man had travelled to Benin to meet up with a group of people from that country and neighbouring Nigeria that he had met on the internet.

Gov web site with a fine tooth comb, if I claim family tax credits and working tax credits are these classed as public funds and would stop my husbands appeal going ahead, as everyone who earns less than £30000 pa in the UK is entitled to make a claim?
It will not stop the appeal, even if you are in full state benefit it wouldn't stop the appeal going ahead.

lanrewajew: Yes it does. The maintenance fee for inner London is £9000, while my school fee balance is £2000 which equals £11000. £11000 x N270 = 2970000
Then the money your uncle paid into your account will not affect the 28days count.

chimithen: This is where you see the Pharisees coming up with suggestions and ideas that are irrelevant but these same people are the group who will castigate the same person if he/she comes back home without a single dime. Don't you think if these issues pop up, we should lash the leaders(senators and president) some strokes of cane for allowing well meaning Nigerians leave a country because of their lackadaisical attitude towards taking drastic decisions that will turn the youths to favor their country from any region of the world.

If these groups of men were accorded to reasonable loans to study at all by any reputable banks in Nigeria, will they have to do these scams to raise up something tangible for their education and accommodation in foreign land? If the nations educational system is not infinitum, will they even leave in the first place? If we have good roads, constant electricity, and better means of transportation, will they even want a life outside unless they meet a specified status quo.

Lets be real, the situation is not upon the young men caugt cause conditions will push a many lot to do repeatedly what they must do to survive, but it takes the grace of God to even be strong in a strange country demanding all and everything from you at all times.

Absolutely garbage! a criminal is a criminal, don't blame anybody apart from the thief who committed the offence.

There are poor Nigerians who worked hard to make a good living, they did not turn to crime and blame everybody else apart from themselves, stop giving silly excuses for criminals.

GenBuhari: ^ Is Mugabe seeking any new loans from the IMF?

Is he listening to Western nations/IMF / World bank advise on how to run his economy

The he dance to tune if Western nations/IMF / World bank on land reform?

Why do you keep asking a question Ihad already answered?
Why would he seek new loan while he hasn't paid back billions he is owing already?

You have not answered the question, all you are doing is repeating yourself over and over again.

GenBuhari: With the way people like justwise and texa..whatever his name, are defending white people, I am starting to wonder if they are actually white people .

To me Mugabe is an African hero.

In 99% of cases, if the western media such as bbc and CNN criticises an African leader, it is usually because that leader has decided to do what is in his countries best interests and not follow policies that the West and IMF want to dictate to them.

Those African leaders that the west praises are usually hugely corrupt and destroying their countries.

I have ammassed a ton of evidenc about how Abacha, who contrary to popular belief never actually looted, was maliciously discredited after he was mysteriously killed and replaced by pro-western puppet - namely Obasanjo.

Obasanjo wrecked the country completely and stole probably 80% of all money ever looted from Nigeria, yet he is rarely criticised in western press the way that they have been lying against Abacha.
I'm not surprised that this is coming from somebody with user name GenBuhar.

Tell me what you know about Zimbabwe and the issue of IMF, sometimes its important to read with open mind about any issue to avoid coming online to disgrace yourself.

donedy: All of you should keep on making argument based on deluded minds. Until you peoples start reading between the lines, don't go to the public and talk. Which government will allow a bunch of thugs to overthrow his government just because they have the support of some foreign nations. You should go and demonstrate against GEJ in Bayelsa, and when you get shot by MENDS blame it on GEJ. When bunch of terrorist were blowing up houses and people it did not get enough media coverage like this one because it might be attributed to the rebels.

I should not be arguing with deluded minds on this thread; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

ogbeche77: Leaving Syrians at the mercy of Russia & China is same as telling them you don't give a shit about them... As it stands now, I also belong to those group who have been accusing the west of invading Libya cos there oil and not really the interest of there citizens and it seems with this Syria scenerio i have been proven right.... Let them impose a no fly zone too, then we play the blame game later, what is good for the goose is also good for the gander
The west should not send or support any group in Syria, they can not police the whole world, oil or no oil the result will not be appreciated by people who have issues with the west.

Actually its a good thing that China and Russia are backing Assad's regime, lets see how it goes.

I finally got the visa which expires in August.I intend to use this visa for a visit/shopping in the UK. would that suffice especially because of those Border guys at Immigration point in Heathrow?

What can I do?

Justwise: I need your contact
Sure you can use the visa for your shopping trip, they may stop you at the POE and may not stop you at all, its a random thing. Yes the initial purpose of the visa was for an interview but it delayed which wasn't your fault but now you going for shopping, don't carry anything job-related in your bag. . .
@Justwwise, I really do appreciate your heart-warming response. About my 3rd question, lemme break it down:

1. My former school here gives transcripts with the first page being an introduction letter to a specified address.

2. This letter is detachable and can be easily re-added.

3. When I was applying for admission, I did not include the introduction letter, I detached it and scanned pages containing my academic records since the introduction was addressed to a Nigerian address and not the school I was applying to.

4. During my visa application, same transcript is required. Should I add the first page introduction letter or just the pages containing my academic records--pages I used to get admission?.

Thank you.
Please don't make it hard for yourself, all you need to do is. . . present only those certificates listed in your CAS letter, nothing else, you don't need to add anything else not included in your CAS.

ogbeche77: Yes,but they still need the west, you agree
Yes they do but i hope the west doesn't step in,the Arab league begged the west to carry out no-fly-zone in Libya, many accused NATO of watching while Gaddfi kill people in numbers but when NATO steps in. . . the blame game and accusation of oil interest started. Gaddafi become a hero to some because NATO intervened.

Let the west/NATO back off on this. Russia and China should sort this out.

ogbeche77: The Syrians can never get rid of Assad themselves without foreign support, it over 16 months now or more, ignore the western media propaganda, let's face reality, It so obvious both Russia & China are supplying ammunition to Assad regime, if not why are they frustrating UN effort
I'm sure if Syrians have an option to choose between the west installing a puppet or still having Assad, they will prefer the former
They can get rid of him without western direct intervention, it will take time but it will definitely happen, the involvement of outside militant groups, the use of suicide bombing, pressure on Assad's diplomats in foreign missions, ministers, security agencies will start cracking the Govt, more and more of them will start feeling isolated from within Arab and western countries and would want to leave Syria and desert the Govt. Russia and China will protect Assad for life.

donedy: It shows that you cannot analyze simple vocabularies juxtaposed within a scholarship context. All those words you pointed out are common words used in scholarship. None of them are insulting within the given context. Please I am here to accentuate the importance of examination of articles to be able to differentiate bias from reality.

In case you need help on vocabulary, open up a new thread, and I will be happy to educate you on the proper usage of words based on contextualization.
You are just an embarrassment to yourself, go and educate yourself because you need it more than anybody else.

donedy: You see that is the kind of deluded mentality that I am talking about: The kind of idiosyncrasy that has retro-gated the black continent. I would know how Assad happens to be the evil one while the rebels becomes the innocent ones. An outsider will carry out research and present to fools like you, and you will immediately jump onto the band-wagon. It's actually obvious most of you here are bunch of religious fanatics that's the reason your brains are now deadlocked.

No one is blaming the West for you guys foolishness. It just that people like you are too blind and lazy to comprehend what's happening. Why is Russia and China against any sanctions? They don't because they know it is a group of organized Idiots intentionally planning to change regime just to put on religious bigots like you into power like they did in Libya. Please read CNN and also try RT.com if your dumbness cannot allow you to think.

A group of people were killed, the main Media say Assad, then a deluded black man agrees to it. However they later changed it from being the soldiers to being a group of militia working for the government. Go and carry gun and demonstrate against against GEJ like your fellow SNG did just because your master say he is a dictator and see if you will see light again.

I am sorry for those who have been killed, but everyone has to go similar circumstance in life. A bunch of thugs supported by Idiots to meddle into the political framework of a sovereign nation: the results are a chaotic nation and more investment opportunities for the Idiots once the storm settles.

The same uprising has being happening in Bahrain and no major media is covering it because the main media used by your masters know that the trouble will escalate once media propaganda surpass the reality on the ground.
donedy: Hello, I don't indulge myself in vulgarian name-calling on public forum because it attenuates my credentials as a rational human-being who is merely using derived fact to enlighten you by accepting your opinion and questioning your perspectives.

Let me paraphrase what a wise fellow once said, don't argue with a looser, he will drag you down to his level by resorting to insults and beat you with experience once you fail for it.
When i called you an animal i was right, were those insults highlighted there not coming from you? Are you simply brain dead?
@Justwise and other student travel experts, I have to confess, you guys are doing a very great job here.

I got an unconditional offer of scholarship for my MSc at Queen's University,Belfast last Wednesday(23/05/2012), scholarship covers entire tuition and I will be responsible for my living expenses. I accepted the offer and 5 days later, I made enquiries as regards when I should expect my CAS from the international office of the school and I was informed it should be from early to mid June. My questions are:

1. My dad said if he pays 3million NGN into any of my accounts, the EFCC will be alerted since I opened my main account when I was an undergraduate student and my other two bank accounts during my NYSC. He said I didn't update my account as a job holder so they might question the source. Guys that understand current bank trends and operations, how true is this?

2. If he eventually leaves the money in his account for him to be my sponsor and I use his bank account statement, will the following documents suffice to show our relationship--personal letter to establish father-son relationship which will include his phone number in case of contact, photocopy of his Nigerian passport(Or is original preferable?), his birth certificate(Should his be original?) and my birth certificate?

3. The transcript I used in getting admission was not addressed to the school I applied to, it was addressed to a Nigerian address, so I didn't include the accompanying addressed letter during application to Queen's. Now that I will have to show originals I used to apply to my school during my visa application, should I submit the transcript along with the accompanying addressed letter to a Nigerian address or leave it out?

Thank you all as you attempt to proffer solutions to my worries. I am grateful in advance o.
1.Your daddy will not have any problem with EFCC he pays that money into your account, its not money laundry and its just for your fees, its still ok if he leaves it in his account.

2. Birth certificate is enough to prove the relationship between you and your daddy but adding other documents you listed there will not harm your application.

Rephrase your 3rd question because i don't really get it

as to the west stepping in. . . thats the only way this will get resolved, since the rest of the arabs are trying to contain their own springs

assad has demonstrated that he will stop at nothing to hold on to power.

Mubarak's cage will look like a hollywood feel good movie if the rebels succeed.
The west should not step in, the same people calling the west to step in will cry foul when they do. The west should back off and watch as event sort itself out.
