Philippines paid $92 million in 2014 for the first 2 vessels and budgeted $110 million for the next 2.


I know they have quite different roles, the LST is for beach landings meanwhile the SSV needs a port to offload ( even thought it carries smaller landing crafts internally) this LPD is really on my mind

I think the LST from Damen is less expensive than what a Makassar class SSV would cost the Nigerian Navy.

We cannot really say what changes the Philippines Navy requested for or systems they did not add. So it's quite difficult to compare like for like.

A good example is the Makassar class SSV which Peru is building. They are more expensive than the same Makassar Philippines got.

While the SSV would be my first choice, I don't think it's a practical choice for the Nigerian navy. Especially when you take into account the Navy has a requirement to replace NNS Ambe & Ofiom. An SSV would come with the requirement of new training and SOP especially when compared to the LST.

The usage of an SSV is limited when compared to an LST. If there are no port facilities or if available port facilities are contested, what happens?

If neighbouring countries are hostile to you what also happens, how do you dock?

With an LST, you only need a beach. Whether it's a time of conflict or disaster relief.

I don't think an SSV is a requirement for the Nigerian Navy at this stage, what we need is to have a second LST and a minimum of 2 x Corvettes and at least 2 x Frigates.

As far as I can remember , one needs to careful bec the tuberous roots of certain varities of it causes itchy sensation in throat when eaten

We are not so different after all.

It used to be widely eaten in Nigeria in the early from the early 2000's and downwards, nowadays, not so much.

My bet is on the Shaldag V - but of course i would be happy for the NN if they introduce Sa'ar 72 Corvettes.

We've switched to Ocea a long time ago. I don't see that happening. Also considering we recently got 4 x Aresa boats.

I think it's a more significant purchase.

Earlier reports suggest Nigeria may have ordered Sa'ar 72 Corvettes.

Could this visit be further evidence of that purchase?
