Whyem15: Majority of the plans in the recapitalization program is why I wish to see the deep blue project develop into a coast guard and allow NN to focus on being a real navy.
And hopefully, the new OPVs the navy will be getting will be missile armed. what is a real Navy? |

Whyem15: But those presently at the high command were also in the fields not too long ago as commanders and know what the soldiers need to do their work. What's really wrong with them?
The only reasonable excuse is if it is an emergency purchase to quickly replace those lost to last year's dry season before another offensive begins. I don't think it's a rushed purchased. I think cost consideration, familiarity of system and quantity are the primary deciding factors. |

Whyem15: It's disappointing Sha, at this stage we shouldn't be buying weapons designed in the 1980s. But at least we have more protected mobility for the coming offensive. Perhaps Army high command don't trust commanders enough to ensure the safety of new equipment. They might have also looked at the cost of purchasing a modern IFV vis-a-vis battlefield sustainability and decided, quantity over quality. |

SuperSixSeven: Skyhawk helicopters?? There is one MI-35M in the NAF with the callsign "Skyhawk" - is it that what you mean? Skyhawk is the nick name NAF calls MI-35M helicopters. If you look at almost all Combat footages that involve MI-35M helicopters, you'll see NAF describing them as such. |

Whyem15: The airforce will still get attack helos, the security situation demands it. The animals we fight are those who will come back to the battlefield after a fixed wing aircraft has expended its main ammunition and returned to base because of fuel. We need aircrafts that will remain in the air for hours. The Tucanos might be fitted into that role for now but it still won't be able to do what an attack helo will do. We still have 6 MI-35s in Russia waiting to be delivered, Ajuri Ngelale mentioned they will be delivered this year some months ago. Why sign the agreement with Russia if we are not looking to buy new weapons from them. And considering we've been using Russian helicopters for some time now..... If all the M-436 are delivered, including the loitering time the Tucano has, add that with the UCAVs we have in service. In fact I predict that we would see more UCAVs , MI-17 helicopters before attack helicopters. That comment Ajuri made on that interview didn't seem like he made that with any strong evidence. Off course I would be happy to see more Skyhawk helicopters, I just don't see any new purchase for them happening soon. Although I agree that the recent military agreement with Russia adds some weight to your argument, but that agreement could refer also to other areas. However all in all, there are interesting times ahead, I just hope all these purchases lead to very, very improved security situation in Nigeria. |
