True.

I strongly feel that the NN will go for Chinese corvette's. Which is also great too. Two "missile-armed" corvettes plus our two P-18N stealth Opvs and a frigate will make a decent flotilla.
I agree with this.

lionel4power:
But sailing such a large number of capital vessels will likely put a hole in the NN pocket. I remember one time that they complained about how much fuel one hamilton-class patrol cutters was consuming in a single voyage. And now we have two.

The govt will have to increase their budget.
I think with the purchase of 2 x new OPVs, the Hamiltons might be placed on reserve.

Unfortunately, i don't see a scenario where the next government that comes in, increases military budget.

Whatever modernisation that needs to happen, if the 3 armed services don't use this opportunity to modernise, i fear for future upgrades of the military in the short term.

Every other government that comes in after this government would be more economy minded.

I just don't see any future budget increase unfortunately. The military can only hope on other revenue streams.

In any case, i could still be wrong.

Definitely we need atleast 2 Corvettes & 1 Frigate or 4 Corvettes.

NNS Prosperity could actually serve as a decent corvette.

Personally, I think the NN is not throwing around her weight. A couple of missiles integrated into that vessel would do wonders.

We'll just have to wait for this current anti-piracy threat assessment phase to pass.
NNS Prosperity is a very old ship.

She doesn't even serve as a primary patrol ship in Nigeria.

I think it's best it continues as a Training/Patrol ship through out her life time with Nigeria.

We should focus instead on purchasing proper Corvettes, there are many good quality & cost effective corvettes in the market.

Turkey has many options to choose from, they are also open to ToT. There's China, Germany, Netherlands, France, possibly Korea (with Samsung Heavy Industries based in Nigeria, that's a good option thatcan be explored).

I definitely think after the delivery of NNS Kada, we would purchase a couple Corvettes or Frigates. 2 x of each of any chosen, minimum.

You conveniently talk about British slavery in Nigeria, ignoring Nigeria participated in World War I, including glorious battles in Burma & South-East Asia in World War II.

It was a fait accompli after the coup in Mali especially after the second one. It was going to become a problem. Should never have been allowed to stand under whatever guise.

The young man in Mali has set the path for every Special Forces officer in these tiny republics to seek power for themselves. And why always US trained ones. Something stinks. Anywhere they go problem like Afghanistan.

That said you nailed it. The greed for power is the root cause. Leaders should stick to term limits. When legitimacy is eroded ECOWAS has a problem to intervene at least morally. ECOWAS should put mechanisms in place barring leaders from exceeding term limits. Too many recently from Guinea to Ivory Coast.

As much as I hate to say it because of the threat we face in ISWAP that is still struggling for relevance (a reason I kept silent on Mali even if I thought something should have been done) it might be best to send a clear signal to the would be putschists in Conakry to stand down immediately. A day lingers and they start playing straight from Col. Goita's playbook a dangerous trend for West Africa. Col. Goita himself should be sanctioned that guy single handedly has become the problem.

I tend not to see any event narrowly. It seems every thing is being done by external powers to pull Nigeria down to its feet and dismember it. Every time we get close to defeating state enemies something else intractable shows up. ISWAP can't be surviving after every blow but here we are 10 years on they are still whimpering and not helped by inept local politicians. Who are these people really.
I agree completely with this comment.

Nigeria needs to throw it's weight against the coup madness taking over West Africa. This is not good.

Meanwhile, West African democracies need to sit up. The intent of democracy in the first place is for the people to benefit from the wealth of the nation not just the rich, fortunate and educated elites.
West African democratic leaders need to stick to term limits of 8 years for 2 terms or 6 years of single term.

Sit tight leaders are responsible for the current wave of Coups.

Nigeria was too soft on Mali, we should have been more decisive like in Gambia.

Personally, the continuous comparing with South Africa is misplaced. Truth be told, only Nigerians compare themselves with South Africans here.

First if you look at the above indices, they, South Africans do not need the dixk swinging contest because they have more and superior systems.

Secondly, in experience, they have been warring under their own name since WWI. Their exploits in WWII, and Korea is still well celebrated till date.

Asides that, their naval have established their presence across the southern coast from Namibia to Mozambique a distance of 2000 nautical mile. SAN routinely patrol this distance to keep the area clear without making noise.

While the Gulf of Guinea is 1295.896 nautical miles.

When the Suez canal was blocked by the Evergreen, global shipping began moving their goods around the Cape of Good Hope. That is about $10 billion per day. And still the SAN kept these ships safe from pirate attacks. We never heard of any attack.

Bottom line is, capabilities and threat analysis differs. Nigeria's military acquisition is focused on counter-terrorism. While that of S.A is focused on peer-to-peer competition.

Yes, recently Nigeria has acquired new gadgets but I noticed that whenever new tech is bought, some people quickly come here to drag S.A.

Funny though, because I don't see Saffars doing the same. Even though they've been pummeled recently by budgets cuts, there's a reason they're still being placed above Nigeria in ranking. This is because 1) they have a world-class defense industry. 2) they have the experience. 3) they have the equipment.

Lastly, this disk swinging contest have driven the saffers from this forum, what else do you guys want.

Please reply me with commonsense.
While having nonoperational Frigates, Submarines & Gripens Fighter jets that are in storage or inadequate fighter pilots to fly them is an achievement for you, in Nigeria, military planners take a more pragmatic look to procurement, taking into account Security assessment.

The Nigerian military is designed to deal with the threats we face. The South Africans in theory do not have the material, manpower or supply chain to invade or attack a country like Nigeria, hence we have invested heavily in other areas.

It's futile have an argument, when in clear facts the supposed enemy lacks the means to launch any attack in the first place.

The South African Navy does not have enough funds to refit the majority of its frigates and submarines and combined with underfunding of maintenance, this has been a major contributor to the Navy not meeting its sea hour targets.

https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/refit-of-sa-navy-frigates-and-submarines-stalled-by-lack-of-funding/

Can you explain to me how you have a modern military when you cannot even maintain it?

For the 2021/22 financial year, the SA Navy’s vessel refit as well as maintenance and repair full cost requirement of R1.470 billion is only 53.4% funded, with R786 million allocated. “This impacts negatively on the preparation of naval platforms for force preparation and force employment,” the DoD stated, adding that “the underfunding of the refit, maintenance and repair of vessels…is the major contributing factor towards the non-achievement of planned sea hours.” The Navy’s annual sea hour target is 10 000 per year, but its target has not been achieved for some time.

Due to historic and current funding shortages, only one of the four frigates, SAS Amatola, was partially refitted in 2014/15 and only one of the three submarines, SAS Manthatisi, was refitted in 2013/14. Funding for the refit of the remaining three frigates (SAS Isandlwana, SAS Spioenkop and SAS Mendi) and for the Submarine SAS Queen Modjadji 1 was not available since they became due for refits, the DoD said.

You've made many claims about the SA military, which is completely false. It's is however poignant to note that a vast majority of South-African military equipment are basically museum pieces, not fit for purpose, lacking the personnel required to man and operate them.

@Covert1 has made an outstanding, roboust counter-argument, but I'll like to go a different route.

Equipment

South-African Valour class frigates were ordered in 1999, that is 22 years ago. There has been no evidence of any sort of mid-life upgrade, so to make a claim that they are modern is quite ridiculous.

Same argument can would be made for their submarines.

SAAF Gripens were also ordered 22 years ago, there are multiple Gripen upgrade packages available in the base C/D model, none have been carried out on the Gripens.

Attack Helicopters SAAF has 9 units in service, 1 Rooivalk crashed, another is used as a test bed.

They only have 9 in service, SAAF Attack Helicopters are not more modern than the MI-35M Nigeria has in service.

The Umkhonto Air Defence system is only installed on the Valour Frigates, nowhere else. You need to stop exaggerating the SANDF.

169 Oerlikon GDF 35mm guns, along with 75 Superfledermaus fire control units (FCUs)
Skyshield air defence systems,
Thales Air Defence Starstreak
.......... These are very, very old systems.

The SANDF does not have any ELINT system.

Link-ZA is a basic communication system, all capable militaries in Africa have a Data-Link system.

That's how for example Commanders in Abuja can see in real-time footage and information from Drones flying over Gwoza, from a Mobile control station in Yola.

Apart from 15 upgraded Tanks, the SA army field Olifant Tanks which are World War II Centurion tanks. Nothing modern about them.

11 months after steel cutting ceremony held in Concarneau Flag of France, the first of 3 missile armed OPV 58 S for the Senegalese Navy is now in the fitting out stage.

The vessel will be launched in 2022 with 2 units scheduled to for delivery in 2023 and the 3rd vessels scheduled for 2024.

The weapons suite:

•76mm main gun by Leonardo

•4x anti-ship missiles placed forward (likely Marte by MBDA)

•2x 12.7mm manned machine guns on the bridge wings

•2x 20mm remote weapon stations (Narwhal by Nexter)

•SIMBAD-RC surface to air system by MBDA

I largely agree with this assessment. It is what it is. For all the nay sayers, how many missile armed vessels does the NN have. The NN has very limited Blue water capabilities. Its strategic growth plans and recapitalisation efforts would see it into a very formidable force in a few years, but in its current state, if we're being honest, its a glorified coast guard.

On the NAF, our Tucanos are strike aircraft and the deal didn't include any A2A missiles. The JF-17s are another case entirely. They can go toe to toe with any Gripen, but unfortunately we only have them in little numbers. With the M-346FA deal however, Nigeria will have a pretty good air deterrent. Their A2A weapons suite are the same as the Eurofighter Typhoon. We'll also have them in decent numbers
