Basically, ships and naval vessels in navies around the world, are classified by displacement/tonnage , armament, roles, length, endurance, etc. Each Navy has its on classification of vessels. The Nigerian navy is not an exception. While some will argue that the P18N is a corvette, but classified as an OPV in the Nigerian Navy, i would say, the P18N is the OPV variant of the Type 056 corvette.
The P18N is an OPV, because: (1) it lacks the armament to be pronounced a corvette. (2) its role is one for an OPV i.e patrol of EEZ, anti-priacy, etc. (3)it lacks ASW, SAM, AAM capabilities.
That's my few thoughts about this.
We all agree that the P18N is an OPV. Nobody is arguing to the contrary.

I shared a picture of our Frigate and Navy Type056 ships side by side to show size difference between a Frigate & a Corvette.

Our resident South African clown started arguing something entirely different like government work. undecided undecided

jl115:
they are OPVs... No anti sub, no anti air, no anti surface.... Purely a patrol vessel, and it's not like you could convert the P18N into a corvette either since the battle management system and ship architecture simply won't allow it unless a major refit is done which would cost so much one could just as well purchase a type 056 instead of going through the trouble.
You just like to argue.

My initial comparison was a size comparison.

However, P18N can easily be converted to a missile, it doesn't we've seen how possible it is with the OPVs Senegal ordered from France. OPV 52 is another good example.

except those are P18N OPVs not type 056 corvettes
Corvettes.

We can do this all evening.

"Is there a size difference between Type 056 missile armed and Patroller?"........ NO!!

OPVs
It's a Corvette.

There are many OPVs that are armed with missiles.

The Type 056 is a Chinese Corvette.

China is challenging in the South China sea. They would have to keep submarines at sea for long or compensate with large numbers. Cruisers can do a whole lot and it is only when we talk about "carrier groups" that you begin to understand what power projection is about. A carrier group can cripple the entire offensive forces of a moderately powerful country especially in this age of AI powered electronic warfare
South China Sea is not in Africa, Europe of America.

From the infographic you can see that China has the most balanced Navy on earth. Each branch built to complement one another.

Cruisers, nobody is building cruisers any more, like i pointed out to you, the Buyan is basically 62 meters long, if they were built in Nigeria they would be classified as a Seaward Defence Boat. grin grin grin

Imagine engaging targets with the Buyan at a distance of 3,000 km that's impressive.

Nobody is interested in building Cruisers, not even the United States. FFG(X) is a good example.

A Carrier group usually comprises of Destroyers, Frigates, Submarines and at least 1 Replenishment ship.

You're talking Cruisers like they are one super thing, Cruisers are essentially going extinct like the Dinosaurs.

Russia recently scrapped Admiral "Lazerev".

Nope. Nuclear submarines don't need refueling for months. No serious world power depends on diesel submarines and has no cruisers.

One US cruiser can take out a country's airforce by launching cruise missiles from over 200km away. They can jam comms or worse sow confusion in your C3I infrastructure.
Wait..... What?

DE Subs are perfect for countries with a military posture as China. No expected to fight far from home port.

DE Sub's are more quiet than Nuclear powered subs.

What Nuclear power provides you is more energy output to run your systems & range.

Cruisers are ships of a by-gone age. Even small 62m Corvettes like the Buyan can hit targets over 3000km away.

Most countries, big countries depend on Frigates & Destroyers while Corvettes make the largest numbers of their fighting fleet. Look at China & Russia.

Even the US is now building Frigates case in point is FFGx which Fincantieri recently won.

Referring to the nuclear subs Australia is getting in comparison to the nuclear subs China have...
I believe nuclear subs stay longer in sea and are more powerful than the diesel variant..
Just wondering why the Chinese navy have few..
And how Australia intends to maintain a large fleet of nuclear subs..
Looking at your the picture you posted australia fleet will be larger than the UK..
Is it just me or the aussies are punching above their weight
Australia doesn't have a nuclear submarine for now, China has 15.

Australia would only get 8 nuclear subs from the US, with 4 available at any one time.

Can someone please explain this for me.. China is the second biggest economy in the world or second richest which ever way you want to put it..
As rich as China they have just 12 nuclear subs but a country that isn't as rich as Japan is getting 60 nuclear subs..
Am confused is either Australia is bitting more than it can chew or China just doesn't want alot of nuclear subs in its inventory ..
China has a bigger Naval fleet than America.

Abi, it's in what I posted after research that they returned to NATO in 2009...I became educated that they returned, you too be educated they left at a certain time.
They downgraded bro. They didn't leave entirely, all the same I see the larger point you are trying to make.

The French have conducted independent military adventurism outside the US, case in point Mali.

[b]This changed in 2009 when president Nicolas Sarkozy changed course and returned France to full participation, and the French Parliament backed this decision with a vote of confidence.[4]

But why don't some people do basic research?

French president Charles de Gaulle downgraded France's membership in NATO and withdrew France from the U.S.-led military command to pursue an independent defense system.[2] However, the twenty-year rule prevented France from completely leaving NATO altogether.

Where did they withdraw bros?

Tobiloba24072:
The actual reason for for Australia's decision to go for the nuclear submarine with USA is China. China's military and diplomatic capabilities has been growing faster than USA, UK and Australia has projected, a nuclear submarine has more endurance that AIP submarines.
Recently Australia has been acting like the overzealous pitbull, wanting to compete with China military and financially, even got to stage of wanting to do their own trade war with China. This stance by the government, has had it's citizens complain about what the government is doing, and they not anywhere as strong as China, even some government officials got nicknames over the issues.
Yes, that's what Australia is saying now....... The dynamics changed from what was obtainable when the initial RFI was issued.

Irrespective though, I didn't see the possibility where America would have allowed France go ahead with this deal at the loss of American defence contractors. It's too juicy to let another country have it.

Same scenario played out with one of these Northern European countries. I think it's Denmark or was it Norway.

The US government pressured the Danes to get the F-35, instead of the Rafale that fulfilled all Danish security needs.

It's also the same pressure America mounted on Indonesia and they abandoned their SU-35 deal.

Anyway, it's beautiful seeing France getting a huge L!!!

However all these show how far reaching American might goes.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1:

Australians went for the better deal. France was going to provide them with diesel powered subs while Americans nuclear powered. By the way, America seriously need to keep the military industrial complex alive especially now that they have pulled out of Afghanistan.
France initially offered Australia nuclear powered submarines, Australia said no.

American MIC is better off without Afghanistan. They have a new foe in China. Afghanistan offers nothing apart from MRAPs.

With China & Russia American MIC would get contracts for Submarines ( Nuclear & Conventional), F-35 fighters, Aircraft carriers, Frigates & Destroyers far bigger and juicier contracts.

Anyway, I'm enjoying the French tears.

USA really f*cked them up big time. They stole a contract worth over $60 billion from France.
That's the strength super powers have. It's an incredible backstabbing with the French crying all over the news.

KDF was single sourced and contracted to build a 100 meters commercial cargo ship in Kisumu, the ship will operate within ports around lake Victoria (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania) KDF is building a shipyard at the same time while constructing the ship.

NB: A similar shipbuilding facility is also under construction in Mombasa for blue water operations.
This is fantastic news.

Any renders for what the ship would look like?

I'm sorry to say, but the respondents above, from @Giles14 down did not read to understand the post by @rka1.

@Rka1 did not say Nigeria is going to ask for a loan from Russia to purchase a Western aircraft.

He's saying Nigeria could possibly get a loan from Russia to purchase MI-28NE attack helicopters.

Also I have never seen where Nigeria took a loan to purchase military equipment, hasn't happened before, won't happen now.

Remember the M346 model was on the former CAS, Sadique's table way back and not something that was negotiated this year. Besides, there is the extra budgetary allocation and who knows, maybe a loan from Russia. Also, I think there is a sort of fund that is going to be set up for the Armed Forces. These deals will probably be spread over a few years.

For all we know, Nigeria might be one of the below countries grin
I won't get my hopes high for real.

Indonesia, Serbia and Belarus announced significant purchases during this show.

Not optimistic about any Mi-28 or cobra deal but concerning the M346FA, I doubt we just paid for it considering that delivery will start this year, and the rumors have been existing before the recent release of funds to the military. It is highly unlikely that we paid for the deal this year and delivery will also start within the same year.
This unnecessary secrecy we are seeing with these new defence chiefs would eventually lead to corruption cases.

I don't know what we have that they keep hiding.

Let's see how procurement proceeds going forward.

Paramount Maritime keeps churning them out. Actually observed them from a friend's balcony the other night, moving this from the shipyard to the synchro-lift in the docks in Cape Town.
There are many big billion dollars offshore projects that need protecting. The market is there, and it's clear Paramount are making a killing.

I think Paramount would need to set up a production facility in Nigeria. I know they have a maintenance base in Onne, but with their clientele growing ever bigger, more investment would be needed.

I think I for see that happening soon.

There is that, although we know they are buying Russian helo(s) after the Super Cobra debacle. Which one(s) is the question.
Well, I usually don't celebrate Nigerian personnel at Air Shows.

We are the official kings of look and pass. grin grin

The Super Cobra deal doesn't seem legit to me either. I know credible agencies like Reuters carried the news, but I'm on the fence on that.

We also have the M346FA, if we are actually buying that, how can we afford to buy Attack helps almost immediately?
