An excellent idea to remind us of the life and legacy of this Great Ijaw son! He truly gave his life for mother land. As we remember him today and ever, we should remember that an Obasanjo repeat-presidency will do us no good, as a people. Below is an excerpt from an Independent commentator (the choice of words remain those of the contributor):

Fierce battle over oil , the Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF), a militia set up by a rebel officer, Major Isaac Boro, in 1966.

The Ijaws are in dispute with the federal government. , After declaring a short-lived "Delta Republic", Major Boro narrowly escaped execution and was given the job of setting up amphibious units (by the Federal Government). In exchange he was promised that three states would be set up with an Ijaw majority. Towards the end of the civil war he died in mysterious circumstances - the young militants now claim he was killed by the federal authorities.

Once peace was restored the promises were forgotten. The minorities in the Delta were hoping at least to profit from the oil boom in the 1970s even if they could not win political recognition, but again they were disappointed. In 1978 General Olusegun Obasanjo, then Nigeria's military ruler (now its civilian president-elect), issued a decree giving the federal government exclusive rights to underground and offshore resources on condition it then allowed the rest of the country to benefit from them through a complex redistribution arrangement which is one of the most original features of Nigerian federalism.

But the egalitarian aims of this system were never fully realised. The Ogoni writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, one of its most vociferous critics, said that it was "like stealing a shirt and giving the owner one button back",

Boro's Death

My cousin Jones, a Regimental Sergeant Major during the Nigerian civil war told me over and over again that Major Boro did not die in the heat of battle with the Biafran forces. He said the area had already been captured and secured by his company and Major Boro was on an inspection tour when they came under fire. My cousin swore by the Ijaw gods that it was an ambush by one of Brigadier Adekunle's units under the scorpion's direct command. It was a brief but fierce battle, according to him and confirmed personally to me by another Ijaw field Lieutenant (he too died in combat six months later). The type of gunfire that erupted during that particular firefight was completely different from what the Biafrans were known to use in that sector of the war and which to them confirmed that it was one of the federal troops units that carried out the ambush.

My cousin who died two years ago was one of the field officers who fought back the ambushing unit to retrieve the body of Major Boro. He was also one of the men who was assigned to accompany the body out of the war zone under the company of the Ijaw field Lieutenant.

It was no secret at that time that Brigadier Adekunle was wary of Major Boro's popularity and successes in the campaign. Boro's direct access to Army HQ, plus the fact that Boro was commissioned directly and personally by Gowon made him a target of envy by other non-Ijaw senior officers.

I also remember the wake keeping for Major Boro that lasted weeks at his father's residence at Olowojeunjeje Street in Ajegunle, Lagos. I remember the crowd, the wailing, the sense of loss of a hero. It was a loss not only to Ijaws but to all Nigerians because the crowd was made up of all tribes. I remember some of the speeches because references were made at getting the truth about his death from the federal authorities. I was there, almost every night because it was just one street over from my parents house. Most importantly, I remember the quizzical look in the faces of a lot of people. The rumour about the circumstance of the firefight was very strong in the air. And the question that a lot of people wanted answered was the truth about how exactly did this man die?

This hero is being remembered again. Can anyone throw some light about the circumstances of that fateful day when Major Isaac Adaka Boro came under fire.?

LAGOS — Former Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Bola Tinubu, yesterday, blamed former military Heads of State, Generals Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida and former President Olusegun Obasanjo for the country’s current constitutional crisis through over-centralisation.

He spoke on a day Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, and Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, also faulted the present federal revenue allocation formula, which they described as unjust and inequitable.

Tinubu, who made the remarks at the first consultative roundtable and policy retreat organised by the State House of Assembly for elected officials of the state and local governments, said every successive government in the past was dictatorial and steered Nigeria’s federal arrangement towards a unitary system.

He said of past military leaders:  “They were all dictatorial and their decisions brought Nigeria to constitutional dilemma which is more unitary than federal in nature.”

New revenue allocation formula

Tinubu canvassed a new revenue allocation formula which, according to him, would  promote development and growth at the grassroots.

He said: “We need a new revenue allocation formula that is equitable and fair. We need to dismantle this unitary system we call federalism. We need to get rid of unfounded regime at the centre.”

He accused the Federal Government of undue interference in the affairs of local governments, stressing that it was responsible for local government crises in the country.

Fashola on federal arrangement

Speaking at the retreat, Gov. Fashola said as long as the current arrangement subsisted, the cycle of development crisis would persist in the country, especially at the grassroots.

He said it was an effort in futility for the Federal Government  to think it could reach all local governments in every part of country, noting that there was a risk of failure in this kind of arrangement.

Fashola said:  “Whenever the Federal Government  fails to implement its budget fully, the country will record 52 percent failure. We must say no to this federal arrangement. The earlier we reject the arrangement, the faster we release Nigeria from the bondage of development crisis.

Ikuforiji, in his address, described the grassroots as the most harassed in the country as it received next to nothing.

“This is a response to the yearnings of our people for better performance. From 1999, Lagos has occupied the position of role model of good governance in Nigeria.

“All over Lagos, there are signs of good governance but our development at the state level is not at par with that of local government. This is why we need to forge the way forward.

“If the real service delivery and dividends of democracy must get to the grassroots, local government administration must be reformed in the country,” the speaker said.

In his goodwill message, Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, tasked elected officials at the grassroots to be more proactive and effective, saying they were not doing enough, though  the nation inherited sound administration from British colonial government.

He said:  “You need to do more. We suffered so much in the hand of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Obasanjo withheld our money.

“If not for the prayers of pastors and Imams, Obasanjo would have ruined us. All that belong to Lagos State should be released to us. We are not fighting any person.”

Your question doesn't make sense. Government spending is within a budget and the 2012 budget has already been written and submitted to the NASS. Any monies gained from refunds by fraudulent marketers will go into next years budget, it is too late for this years.

WARRI—THE Presidency has ordered Chevron Nigeria Limited to provide stable and sustainable power supply from the Escravos Tank Farm to oil-rich Ugborodo and Gbaramatu communities in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The directive was given in Abuja, after a marathon meeting with stakeholders at the Presidency. The meeting was presided over by Vice-President Namandi Sambo.

Present at the meeting were Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and some  Gbaramatu youth leaders as well as representatives of Chevron.

The Ijaw/Itsekiri youth leadership also agreed that with this, work on the multi-million naira Escravos –Gas –pipeline project being executed by Fenog Nigeria Limited, which was stopped by the aggrieved communities would resume immediately.

Vanguard  gathered that Chevron has over 90 megawatts of power out of which only 40 megawatts is currently in use and the balance is kept in reserve  while all her immediate host communities of Ugborodo and Gbaramatu communities wallow in darkness.

Soldiers prevent another bomb explosion in Maiduguri

Soldiers found and safely detonated a car bomb in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Wednesday.


Military spokesman, Col. Victor Ebhaleme told journalists that soldiers discovered the car in the morning in the city known to be the base of the militant islamic sect, Boko Haram.

Boko Haram is blamed for killing at least 286 people in a coordinated attack in Kano, last year. 
On Tuesday, a police anti-bomb squad member died in Kaduna after an explosive detonated inside a plastic bag he was examining.

PDP-239,636 votes, CAP -7,606,AC N-4,723

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has released the results of the governorship election in five out of the eight Local Government Councils in Bayelsa State with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), leading with 239,636 votes.

The Change for Advocacy Party (CAP)  follows at a distance with 7,606 votes and the Action Congress of Nigeria with 4,723 votes. Also trailing at fourth positin is the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).

The five Local Government Areas declared are Sagbama, Yenagoa, Kolokuma-Opokuma, Ogbia and Nembe.

The Returning Officers, including the State Resident Officer, Mr. Edwin Nwataleri said the other three councils of Brass, Southern Ijaw and Ekeremor Local Government are being expected as they were being conveyed to the collation centre by an helicopter and asked everyone to reconvened by 2pm.

A break down of the votes scored by the parties are; Ogbia local government with 70,827 registered voters,  a total of 53,271 voters were accredited for the Saturday governorship poll.

The PDP scored 50,848 votes, followed by the CAP which polled 1,277, the ACN 1,085, CPC 151, FRDD 108 while NDP polled 11 votes.

In Sagbama council,  where Seriake Dickson hails from, out of the 69,098 voters registered 55,264 were accredited for the poll proper as the PDP polled 51, 078, CAP scored 1,738, ACN 1,388 and CPC 414.

The story was not different in Kolokuma-Opokuma council where out of the 26,201 registered voters,  19,470 according to the INEC result were accredited for the poll.

The PDP scored 18,107 followed by CAP which polled 490 votes, ACN 326 votes, and CPC 94 votes.

For the Yenagoa local government council with 133,122 registered voters and 69,986 accredited voters, the PDP scored 61,820 votes, followed by CAP 2,101 votes, ACN 1,848 and the CPC 381 votes.

In Nembe council area with 73,243 registered voters, 63,523 were accredited for the election proper.

The PDP again asserted it’s dominance in the council area polling 57,589 votes with the CAP trailing a distant second with 2000 votes followed by ACN 1076 and CPC 103 votes.

Meanwhile, the boat heading for  Apoi in Southern Ijaw capsized leading to the loss of all materials meant for Ward 15 unit 18 to 35.

According to report from the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the boat which was travelling from Okunbiri was also carrying seven corps members, a Supervisory Polling Officer, three policemen, two soldiers.

One of the victims who said they narrowly escaped death adding that all their valuables including materials meant for the election were destroyed.

Abubakar Shekau is public enemy No. 1 • Kabiru Sokoto faces interrogation panel • Jonathan, IGP, others review strategy
Security agencies have drawn up a list of wanted leaders of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram in furtherance of the ongoing war against terrorism in the country.
Top on the list is the sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, according to investigations in Abuja by The Nation on Sunday.
Other names on the list were not revealed for security reasons but sources said the names were compiled based on ‘useful tips’ given by the spokesman of the group, Abu Qaqa, to interrogators.
His fellow top strategist of the group, Kabiru Sokoto, who was re-arrested by security operatives on Friday at Mutum Biu, Taraba State, is also now facing interrogation.
Kabiru is strongly believed to be the mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State in which over 40 people died.
Sources confirmed last night that the security agencies are now on the trail of more co-ordinators of the sect, including their leader, Shekau.
It was gathered that most of the co-ordinators have gone underground or changed their locations following the arrest of Qaqa who is widely rated as a ‘vital strategist.’
A top source said: "We are definitely after more coordinators of the sect, including their spiritual leader, Imam Abubakar Shekau. We have launched a nationwide search for them.
"We have a list we are working on. We have been able to identify the key strategists of the sect. The arrest of Abu Qaqa by the State Security Service has brought a setback to Boko Haram and they are feeling the loss.
"With useful confessions by Abu Qaqa, the target of smashing the sect is realizable. Although most of the leaders or strategists have gone underground, it is apparent that security agencies are no longer giving them any breathing space."
On the re-arrested Christmas Day bomb mastermind, Kabiru Sokoto, the source said: "We have started interrogating the suspect on his role within the sect; the alleged sponsors of Boko Haram; what he knows about the Christmas Day bombings; and how he escaped from the custody of the Police on January 15.
"Being a prime suspect, other security and intelligence agencies might collaborate with the SSS in probing him. The probe of his initial escape was also done by a panel raised from all security agencies and the military.
"The ongoing interrogation of the suspect is a round- the -clock exercise."
The source added: "The suspect might appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee of the Police on how he escaped from a five-man police team in Abaji."
Security has been tightened around the detained Police Commissioner Zakari Biu and other five suspects facing trial.
"There is a heavy security around Biu and other policemen on trial since we got the news of the re-arrest of Kabiru Sokoto which will enhance the work of the FDC. The panel has the opportunity to cross-check statements made by Biu and others from Kabiru Sokoto," one source said.
"Ideally, Kabiru Sokoto ought to be handed over to the police again by the SSS but the multi-dimensional nature of the investigation into the Boko Haram menace might not allow that.
"There is no doubt Kabiru Sokoto will appear before the police panel."
Shekau is yet to react to the re-arrest of Kabiru Sokoto from his hide-out.
Shekau had, in a January 12 message to President Goodluck Jonathan, said in part: "This is also my message to the President of Nigeria, who has come out to say negative things about us and also a lot of harm to us. God has given us victory and we have done what we want to do. This is almost 11 years. our members are being killed!
"Anything people want to say or do, we say enough is enough! We serve God and we do not harm anybody, but anybody that looks for our trouble, we will face such person or persons! We follow the tenets of the Quran and anybody that thinks he can fight God shouldn’t think his prayer or praying in the mosque can save him! Any muslim that cheats and hides under the cloak of religion, if we know such person, we wont hesitate to eliminate him.
"Yes, I am saying so because it doesn’t take five minutes to kill just as we’re being killed. We follow the teachings of the Quran. This is what God has told me to explain. Allhamdulillah!’’
It was also learnt that the President met with the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar and other security chiefs at the Presidential Villa on Friday after the re-arrest of Kabiru.

A source said issues relating to the escape and re-arrest of the Sokoto were discussed with the President tasking the security agencies to get to the roots of the Boko Haram menace and track down the brains behind it.
The source said the Taraba State Commissioner of Police was summoned to the meeting to give an insight into how Sokoto was trailed to the state where he was arrested.
The President, it was learnt, stressed the need to explore all avenues, especially with the arrest of Sokoto, to unravel all the knotty details behind the deadly attacks of the sect.
"I can confirm to you that there was an emergency security convened by the President following the sensational arrest of Kabiru Sokoto. The IGP and some top security persons attended the meeting. The CP in Taraba was flown to Abuja to specifically brief the meeting and every effort is being made to get to the roots of the Boko Haram menace.
"The President was specific on what he wants done now that Sokoto is back in the net of the security agencies. He wants all information to be extracted including details on how members of the sect operate, their sponsors and otherwise", the source said,

Abuja -The fugitive alleged mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger, was re-arrested on Friday by the State Security Service (SSS).

The spokesperson for the SSS, Mrs Marilyn Ogar, told newsmen in Abuja on Friday that Kabiru Abubakar Dikko, alias Kabiru Sokoto, was arrested at Mutum in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba.

Dikko was first arrested on Jan. 13 by the police but escaped from custody two days later when he was being taken to his residence at Abaji in the FCT for a search.

Ogar said Dikko was rearrested in a joint military-SSS operation at a hideout at about 4:30 a.m.on Friday

“Kabiru Sokoto was picked up from where he was hiding in a clothes rack at the residence of an accomplice.

“On his escape, he had taken refuge at Umaisha in Toto Local Government Area of  Nasarawa State before he fled to Taraba where he was eventually re-arrested,’’ she said.

Ogar did not name the accomplice or say whether they had the accomplice also in custody.

Ogar warned that perpetrators of evil would be brought to book and assured Nigerians that the security agencies were
determined to end the activities of “unscrupulous elements’’ in the country.

“We are poised to bring to an end the activities of a few unscrupulous elements,” she said, and warned that the
law would always catch up with perpetrators of evil.

Ogar said the 29-year-old suspect was born to the family of Umaru Jabbi of Gagi village in Sokoto South Local Government Area on May 9, 1983.

She explained that upon the death of his father, the suspect’s uncle, Abubakar Dikko, adopted him and gave him his name.

The spokesperson said that the suspect, who completed his secondary education in 2003, was admitted to the College
of Nursing and Midwifery, Sokoto, and described him as a “truant with extremist tendencies”.

She said the suspect was declared a leader of the Boko Haram sect in Sokoto in February, 2009.

The police had declared Dikko wanted shortly after he escaped from custody with a N50 million bounty for information that might lead to his arrest. (NAN)

Escaped high-profile Boko Haram suspect, Kabiru Sokoto, said to be the mastermind behind Madalla bombings has been re-arrested.

Mr. Reuben Abati, spokesman for the presidency, confirmed in a message to Channels Televsion that "Kabiru Sokoto was arrested".

The Boko Haram member who had been arrested in Abuja in January had escaped while in police custody. The suspect was declared a wanted man by the Police High Command, following his escape, and a bounty of N50 million was placed on his head.

He had since remained at large, but Mr. Abati confirmed today that he was arrested by the State Security Service in Taraba State, which borders Cameroon. Channels Television has been unable to reach SSS spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar to confirm the reports.
