Is this not what the subsidy removal is also all about let each state pay its own fuel tax? The money FG pay for as subsidy of pms should be given to each state and lga do use it to develop their area if that state decide to use it to subsidize fuel that is their bussiness and stop subsidizing fuel for our neibouring countries. 1. Our enocomy in the South East is more of entreprenuership than civil service & oil companies. Most of our income is not slary based. We work hard, and I mean that we work hard. If fuel increases, our goods & services will also increase. Market forces will simply help us to balance up,

2. We have more concerns for now than subsidy. We can't cant be demostrating agaist a policy that will save the lives of our brothers. Subsidized fuel is smuggled accross borders in exchange for arms & bombs used by Nigerians to kill our brothers. We are in mourning mood.

3. Subsidy is not worth dying for. When NLC/TUC calls for a protest against 8oko Haram, and all the senless slaughtering of our brothers, then we can join.

4. Those championing these protects are the ones that ruined goverment parastertals. Its the members of the NLC that ran down the refineries, NITEL, NEPA/PHCN, etc.

5. Project Nigeria has failed, we are busy brain storming on alternative.

Attorney General of the Federation from the NIC”, insisted  that the order it made on January 6 stopping the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, from embarking on strike, “was to avoid break down of law and order and to ensure that there is industrial peace and harmony in the country.”

Briefing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the Chief Registrar of the NIC, Mrs Rekiya Bosade Haastrup, said the reason why the court slated today to hear the suit that was filed before it by the federal government was to create a platform for all the parties involved in the ongoing industrial impasse, “to argue their case and to avail the parties ample time to reconcile their differences, make consultations and avoid likely loss of revenue, lives and avoidance of any unforeseen ugly incidents.”

A press statement  issued by the court yesterday reads in part: “The attention of the NIC has been drawn to some distortion of facts being peddled about in the press regarding the ruling delivered by the court on Friday 6th January 2012 on the suit No. NICN/ABJ/03/2012; Attorney General of the Federation AND the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) & Trade Union Congress, (TUC).

“The above suit was filed in the court with a motion Ex-parte and Motion on Notice with affidavit of urgency.

“After perusing the case file, his lordship, the Hon. President of the court listed it for hearing in view of the urgency and a panel of three judges was assigned to hear the motion Ex-parte. The reason adduced for granting the order was clear and unambiguous.

The fuel subsidy on Nigerian petroleum benefits the cabal more than it benefits the poor, said Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi during an interview on Channels TV this morning.

According to the Central Bank Governor, this time provides a good opportunity for the Nigerian government to execute well on a well thought out policy.

According to him:
“We have not been very effective in terms of implementation of policies that are well thought out and we need to improve on implementation.”

On discussions between the Nigerian Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress the Central Bank Governor noted that the discussions between both parties should focus on next steps and that they should both come up with a workable compromise.

However, the Central Bank Governor insisted that going back to N65 per litre would not be an advisable solution.

“Going back to N65 will make a mess of everything we have done so far,” he said.

Meanwhile on the Africa Independent Television’s (AIT) Matters Arising show yesterday, Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi warned Nigerians not to erroneously believe that Nigeria is an oil rich country. “Nigeria is not an oil rich country. We are an oil producing country. Nigeria produces two million barrels per day, with a population of 167million people, Saudi Arabia produces eight million barrels per day with a population of 24million people, one barrel for three compared to one barrel for 80. So if you say we are oil rich, let us remember that we don’t have as much oil as Saudi Arabia but we have six times their population.  That you have oil does not mean you are an oil rich country. Wealth or poverty is relative,” he said.

He further said:

 “When you remove the subsidy, what you have done is to effectively divert that money into other areas. We are not borrowing to subsidies fuel but borrowing to deliver projects that will be transparently looked at.”

Petrol usage is for both cars and generators, and Nigerians feel the brunt more for their generator usage(since no cheaper way to generate their own light). Electricity is even more stable in Lagos than other states in Nigeria. And I thought the Rich in lagos use big generators powered by Diesel, not petrol. While the villager in Jigawa, Borno, Kogi keeps using petrol for his I-pass-my neighbour generator. Please don't bring sentiments in saying Lagos subsidises the rich. Please the subsidies go to the marketers, and you can only attack those that connive with top govt officials such as Minister of Petroleum, GMD NNPC to get paid for imaginary quantities they didn't import. Of course the SURE document already shows how much each state govt will get when subsidies get removed. Aside oil producing states like Bayelsa, I don't see any of those states having much excess after paying salaries and taking care of their overbloated recurrent expenditures

don't forget that there is an excess crude account which means that in 2011 we made extra $40 for every barrel. assuming a budget benchmark of $70 and average crude price of $110.
Because of amnesty, 2011 was one of the best years for crude production and export in NIGERIA.

$40 * 2,000,000*365 = $29,200,000,000

Let's say Nigeria's  share of that is 40% given that we have PSC contracts where FG's share varies and JV contracts in which FG's share is 60%.

$29,200,000,000 * 0.4 = $11,680,000,000 = 1.752 Trillion Naira (@150naira to a dollar).


Jonathan made extra 1.7 Trillion in 2011 and we cannot point to anything to show for this money instead we borrowed more money.

LAGOS is one of the most populated state in nigeria there we have the richest people in the country they consume more of the subsidized fuel to the detriment of the poor and less populated states the fg is saying let me give this 36 states this money to provide for their people individually instead of giving it to NNPC to continue the subsidy for the RICH in lagos

Umuahia—Abia State chairman of NLC, Comrade Sylvanus Eyeh, yesterday escaped being lynched by angry workers who accused him of sabotaging ongoing nationwide strike in the state.

Eyeh and other labour leaders had scheduled to hold their first rally in the state and directed the workers to assemble at the School Road Primary School for its commencement.

It was gathered that while the workers were waiting, Eyeh and other labour leaders, including the TUC chairman, were invited to Government House by Governor Theodore Orji who appealed to them to shelve the rally and protest for fear that it would be hijacked by hoodlums alleged to have infiltrated the state.

The labour leaders were said to have promised the governor that although they could not unilaterally call off the strike, since it was a national issue, the rally would be called off.

However, on arrival at the venue of the rally, where the other workers were already waiting for it to commence, Eyeh and his colleagues announced that it had been put off and asked them to go home.

But, apparently infuriated by the alleged double-speak of their leader, the workers descended on him.

It was said that luck, however, was on his side as he managed to escape in an unmarked vehicle but not without some beating by the irate mob.

The nationwide strike flopped in the state as labour has not held any rally since the protest began on Monday.

Meanwhile, Umuahia and Aba branches of NBA have thrown their weight behind the protest and called on the Federal Government to revert the pump price of petrol to N65.

According to the NBA, removal of fuel subsidy should be done in phases, as the removal this time amounts “to a coup against Nigerians.”

So since 2008 their has not been an increase in ownership of vehicle in Nigeria expecially in LAGOS who consume more subsidized fuel than my state and deprive my state and LG development!!!!
