What I asked you to check can't be found while scanning. It can only be found in live data. There, you (I mean the technician) will see what is going on in real time. It's important to see what the computer (brainbox) is telling the gearbox to do.

While it's revving into 3K, does the vehicle have movement or just the engine revving?

Note that a position sensor can cause your vehicle to not upshift past 3rd gear.

Does it rev freely in 4 or doesn't get in at all? With a good scanner, see if 4th is commanded at all. If the computer is not commanding 4th, the issue is not in the box. If it is (which is unlikely) the issue is in the box.

Reverse gear of 2012 AWD highlander failed, no error codes using toyota techstream diagnostics, oil level is ok. Started without warning, car was sluggish in reverse, then stopped moving at all in reverse gear. The gearbox was changed some months back.

Your son is a creative and great ones don't usually play by the rules. He is just different than than the rest; nothing to worry about. Just ensure he is disciplined and empathic.

Mine (older than yours) was very restless too, but calming down now. My wife used to worry about his not-so-excellent grades in school, which I would usually discharge with the wave of the hand. He might be a symphony composer or creative director and here you are trying to force algebra on him.

Hello similar things happened to me. There was oil in the radiator, the mechanic took out the radiator to a car wash to flush out the oil then bypassing the gear box oil back without going into the normal radiator nosle .

Should I ask him to come and correct it.?

Sure, if not done already. But if you found oil in your radiator, have you checked for water in your engine and gear?

Check for everything that was disturbed during radiator removal and reinstallation. Ensure all piping are in place. Ensure the atf level is correct. Ensure the TCM on the gear and all harnesses are well in place.

Ensure a capable scanner is used to look for codes. If everything looks OK, look for a competent tech who can view and/or record live data. With this, he will see what the computer is commanding.

I agree with a lot of what you have said, but the point is this - there is a difference between principles and methods. You can deploy a defective method, but going against principles is sacrilege. I mean, how can a mechanic condemn the cooling of a transmission? How can a mechanic apply grease on a brake disc to stop a noise? Totally inconcievable.

My AC was recently fixed by an educated tech with a 350k Samsung phone in hand. After the AC failed one week later, it was discovered that alaye used super glue to repair a leaking condenser! Killer mechanic (or any artisan for that matter) can come from either side of the educational divide.

In as much as most mechanics shouldn't be in that space, I really don't think customers should be involved in his own service delivery. That erodes value. If that is the case then we should all learn human anatomy to support our doctors. Pick some legal lessons to weigh our lawyers. So my brother called me to say that his Camry transmission was having issues - erratic shifts, bla bla bla. Mechanic was saying there's something they needed to bring out from the gear and wash (strainer).

Well, after a few questions, I understood the main issue the gear had was consistently high shift point when hot. I explained that high shift point in a modern auto has nothing to do with the gear itself. It has to be external.

I asked if any recent work was done on the car and he said yes - the radiator was replaced. Then I received a shocker: "my mechanic said it is wrong to connect the gear hose to the radiator, so he bypassed it". I asked him to repeat that again in case I misheard, and he did. I asked what the mechanic did with the hose, he said it was connected back to the gear! So what happened to the radiator atf ports? He didn't know.

The mechanic sounded so convincing that after I told my brother his mechanic was wrong, he initially said he would look for a similar car to compare. . You can imagine these mechanics!

After the correction was made and atf topped up, the gear came back to normal. I wonder how he came about that in the first place.

I remember many years ago (in the days of Peugeot 504 Station wagon) when I took our vehicle to the mechanic to complain about a slight hammar noise at the front when brakes were applied. When I came back to pick the car and started driving off, I applied brakes and noticed it was barely effective. I got down to complain; that was when I noticed the dimwit applied grease on the front rotors!

Some 'mechanics' have no business with screwdrivers!

Hello all Nissan users,

Please guys, where can I buy a transmission CVT step stepper motor? My car refuses to engage any gear, some times it moves and stopped me on the high way but now has completely stop to move.

My car is a Nissan Altima 2.5s, 4-cylinder. From my research, I think the code is p1777. Please let me know if you have changed yours recently. I want to also confirm if it is the same code as what I stated here or a different code.. Thank you in advance.

Although the code suggests the problem is with the stepper motor, it's rarely the case. The computer throws that code when it commands a ratio change and doesn't see the correspinding rpm changes. Nissan didn't consider belt/cone problems, which is the culprit 95% of the time.

As a fact, the problem is usually with the pressure regulator valve leakage. When this happens, the cones fail to clamp on the belt with the required pressure, causing it to slip. The computer on the other hand is programmed to think its the SM failing to activate the cones.

SMs rarely die. Most outlive the vehicles.

Just to rest your mind about your SM, if you can lay your hands on yours and have the technical capacity, use the attached to check it electrically. There is another procedure for making it move independently on a bench, but it'll be complicated for you.

My 2016 Camry Xse 4cyl , with u760E 6 speed transmission, Sat for 3 days before the shaft was replaced. Everything was supervised by me and all parts were clean and free of dirt's. Transmission started malfunctioning and won't go into reverse, Sometimes it would work perfectly for the whole day and the next day it starts shifting violently and reverse won't work. After changing Atf twice and and continuous testing, the car automatically sorted it self, I guess I was lucky .
Toyota transmissions are not what they used to be.

It's dirt. Yours auto-corrected because the dirt was very minimal. The ATF managed to dislodge it to the base of your sump, and your ATF change took them outta the system.

When I was doing transmission, I would wash those shifts members with petrol before mating with the transmission. Those Aisin trannies are super intolerant to dirt.

Once I on the car, it steams very well, it'll move if I load drive and accelerate immediately. Once It moves, it'll move until I slow down or almost stopping then it goes off. But reverse is worse it goes off whether I accelerate immediately or not. Honestly I have suffered... The problem is strange to everyone including my mechanic. He advised I change the whole gear box and that cost around 120k...I'm not buoyant for that now.

Not to think of the fear of buying gear box and the problem persist.

Okay. Your initial report was a bit confusing. The TC lockup is looking more like it, pending confirmation.

Your mechanic will need a capable scanner that can view your transmission live data in order to see if its the computer commanding the lockup, or if its hydraulic.

Since you said the reverse is more intolerant (reverses are more aggressive though), you will need to raise the two front wheels off the ground before further diagnosis. Lockups are not commanded in reverse.

With the engine idling, let him check for lockup status in the live data. It should be "OFF" or "0". If otherwise, go no further; concentrate on the computer. If the status is normal, engage reverse and confirm the wheels spin freely in reverse. Failure to spin rules out the lockup. While (and if) they're spinning, check the lockup status again. If the status goes to "ON" or "1" , something is causing the computer to command lockup when it shouldn't. It could be external to the computer, or the computer itself is faulty.

Perform this check in drive too, but ensure the wheels are stopped before selecting D. While viewing the live data, your mechanic should pay attention to the vehicle speed reading and gear range being picked.

If the computer checks out, then it means the failure is likely hydraulic - your lockup relay valve, or some other member of the team is stuck. In all these, using the brakes to stop the spinning wheels while in gear should kill the engine while in gear, if it's the lockup.

If it's hydraulic, you'll need to replace gear, or find a competent tech who can service your valve body.

I'm in Abuja.... I have spent 40k already still didn't fix it. I bought converter 25k, paid the mechanic the that brought down the girl 10k and other expenses. Right now my car is misfiring after changing the converter.

My mind is telling me it's the starter switch because that was what the error code P0707 showed but people here and outside said it cant cause such. I will go next week to buy it and fix if it doesn't work... I don't know what else to do.

If you carried out the test I outlined, you would have ruled out lockup issue, and avoid changing the TC. But assuming the lockup was the issue (which I'm seeing its not), replacing the TC alone may not be enough if it is responding to hydraulics.

At this point, live data is more important than error code. There are technical Cartalk members in Abuja. I advise you reach out to them.
