Your car engine speed and gear input speed are not equal when the computer commands lockup. It's one of the following:

the solenoid is bad (stuck),
the relay valve is stuck,
The torque converter clutch is bad.

A good scan tool can test the solenoid while still in the gear. Your solenoid should be an on/off type so should be heard clicking during test, with key on engine off. This test will eliminate the solenoid as the culprit.

If the solenoid clicks and does not kill the engine when activated with key on engine running, your tech should focus on the gear box and torque converter.

For most gears, reversing the relay valve will keep the TCC circuit applied, and will lurch the car forward at cranking. If this does not happen, then my money is on the TC.

Something else; to confirm what the computer is seeing, your tech needs to look at live data when driving, and compare the engine and input speed when lockup is commanded. It should be 1:1.

A bit more technical for you but, a good tech will understand. Good luck!

My issue has to do with the transmission of a 2001 Rav4 that I just got. After purchase, I had my mechanic drain the transmission fluid inside and replace with Toyota Type T-IV. I decided to take it with me on the family Christmas trip and noticed that it wouldn't go beyond gear 3 (80km/hr at 3100rpm). Even when I fire up to 4000rpm, it still wouldn't engage gear 4. All through the trip, I left the speed at 80km/hr (3100rpm).

Apart from that issue, I noticed that the Reverse gear when engaged would sometimes give noticeable jerks and the accelerator depressed. Other times, it moves fine.

I'd like your opinion on what's going on and how to rectify same. Many thanks.

What might be the cause.

A couple of things - bad torque converter, worn input shaft, low oil, bad manual valve, broken fork, clogged filter, bad gear etc

My 2003 Toyota Camry SE V6 (Big Daddy) automatic transmission, drags before changing from gear 2 to 3. I took it to a transmission mechanic and he said it's from the body valve and transmission gear oil filter. These two were changed and serviced but the issue continued. I was talked into changing the transmission box, which I did, but the problem persists. Please I need a solution to this problem. I've called your phone numbers on your signature but it rang out. I am saddened reading this. Money was wasted replacing gear!

If your sell genuine Mobil 1 for 20k based on all the factors above. And another seller sells for 17k and are both genuine. The 17k guy will have more patronage. Prevailing market prices should also play a part.

For what it's worth, I wont stock what is easy to get everywhere like Mobil1, unless I ship in at competitive price.

That said, there is a reason joints sell same beer N250, bars N800/N1000, and clubs N3000 and more. All these sell to their customers.

In healthcare, some hospitals can sell you a card of paracetamol for 1.5K.

It depends.

If I stock those parts, there will be markup (JIT falls under this category). These should not be parts you would normally buy from the street corner. There should be "to me" cost and "to customer" cost.

A mug of draught Heineken will not sell at the same price as a mug of same Heineken poured from a bottle.

I am sure we know the difference. Let us not even compare that with say, Hero beer. No disrespect!

The same part will cost differently from seller to seller, depending on seller's supplier, overhead, brand, marketing skill, etc. If you now throw variety into the mix, a lot come into play. The same applies to labour. The important thing is quality, and standing by it! How many tree shed guys will refund your money if they are wrong without law enforcement guys' involvement?

A bottle of Hennessy XO will buy a carton of Hennessy VS and still have some balance. If you don't know the difference, you will call the XO seller a thief!

It is not all about running scan. Take it to a good tech for check.

Don't be quick to replace it without proper diagnosis to avoid "Oga, we don put am, but the problem still dey there"

2-year visa application. Priority service. Document submitted on 14th November at TLS Ikeja. Decision supposedly taken since two weeks ago according to UKVI. Passport not out. Due to travel in two days!

Thanks for the advise .I am currently out of Lagos.
So my mechanic took the car to a specialist.
First the tranny pan was dropped, after leaking the fluid.
Solenoids checked, no debris and clicking.
Everything else in order.

So new filter installed and filled with brand new WS.

Next test will be the on computer or ECU
I will keep you guys updated.

I will be interested in knowing how they test the computer. 'clicking' PWM solenoids is not a good way to test them. They are fully driven by the computer, unlike the on/off ones.

If The transmission has not been rest to its adaptive values, I think that should be done first (using a J2534 compliant diagnostic tool).

That adaptive value reset is neither here nor there. It is recommended, but the vehicle can do the relearn on its own if it has to. If that was the problem, it would have been evident in this case immediately after installation. But it worked for four months before acting up. Our Nigerian mechanics don't know what is adaptive reset, but they still install these gears, and they drive right out of the sheds, and stay out.

If everything works fine mechanically for a U150, it drives fine right off the lift.

Drove to Asaba from Benin, check engine light and TRAC came on. Will run a scan when I get home tonight.

OK, that is garage shift. You have sticky valves and/or solenoid(s).

It was the check engine that triggered the TRAC. Are you still having the delayed engagement?

My tranny went bad 4 months ago and was replaced.
The ECU was also replaced with another.
Being told the former ECU caused the damage to the tranny.
Car has been running fine, but recently I have been experiencing harsh shifting from 2 to 3, ie rpm goes up before it engages 3rd gear, ie gear hunting .....then it smoothens out.
Does not happen all the time.
Its not bad, but i think it could be better.

Fluid has been examined and in perfect condition. Drain and fill done with WS, no metal chippings found.
Filter changed.

I have read on lexus forum and many pointed that the ECU might need an update / reflash or recalibration.
Maybe was not programmed correctly or may require firmware update

I need specialist who can do fix to respond asap so I can engage.

It is hard to say now that the culprit is your computer. Do determine that, a painstaking scoping of the solenoid wires need to be done.

If 2-3 flare (where the engine rpm rises and falls between the shift before eventually completing) is all you have, its in the valvebody. The only snag here is that yours is intermittent.

Yesterday I changed the ATF, the transmission filter and the magnet was washed. Reverse engages sometimes now, sometimes it won’t, then I try changing gears till reverse works.

Now if I put it on Drive, it takes about 4 seconds before it moves. This was after the oil service yesterday.

Can you throw more light on the first bolded? When you say 'try changing gears', what do you mean? Garage shift?

On the second bolded, it is not looking very good...

Last week I noticed a sudden transmission flare while driving as the gear was changing from 3rd to 4th. I called my mechanic who said gear needs servicing. I agreed and He did the necessary.
For 3 days transmission seemed to be smooth. I ran a scan on the car ND no faults were reported.
Yesterday on my way back from work, the CEL came on. Since the scanner was still in the OBD link port, I quickly ran a scan which returned
P0776- pressure control solenoid B performance or stuck off
P2714- Pressure control solenoid D performance or stuck off
P2808- Pressure control solenoid G performance or stuck off.
Soon free I noticed subtle jerks while driving. The car is still moving but I have parked at home as a precaution.
I hope my tranny is not fried.
I usually don't feel comfortable when cars start misbehaving.
Car is less than 3 years in Nigeria with 98000 mileage.

2013 RAV4 refuses to move when Reverse gear is engaged, it only moves when Drive is engaged.
I changed the shaft on the driver's side on Saturday, it worked that day cos I did a test drive within the compound.
But yesterday when I drove out, the issue came up. Please what do I do. Thanks

Just the shaft was replaced? Nothing else was done? Reverse does not conk out like that. When you say on Drive works, do you have all forward gears, or you just know it moves forward when engaged?

How many cylinders is your Rav?

Knew everybody on board must have perished. Impossible to survive such crashes - impact and then fire.

It's really sad. Thankful to the Almighty, his son was not on board.
