Like I said, it depends on the level of damage. Sometimes the problem is just a simple valve or filter or ball check. I had a serious transmission issue that almost made me change my transmission last October but suprisingly it got fixed and till now still going strong, in fact better than when I bought the car. I have traveled from Lagos to Ekiti to and fro 2 times, many trips to ibadan and saganu and transmission is still going strong. I also introdoced someone with same car as mine, working well. And before mine a Lexus rx300 had an issue that had been termed condemned and since last August after fixing it's still working. So I think it all depends on the level of damaged. If a transmission is not burnt, it can be fixed.

This toks gearbox had been tampered with.. it was damaged and Somebody changed the fiber.. once a toks gear works and it has the right ATF.. witnis highly unlikely it will spoil in 1 months...

But the kazeems and Ladipo boys are terrible.. they can sell you a repaired gear..

Next time you want to fix a tranny, tell them you are from outside Lagos.. they will give you 2 weeks guaranty..

Then make sure you travel a journey of at least Lagos to Ibadan four times within the week..

No repaired gear that they replace fibre can survive that journey. It is when you are driving short distances that the gear will survive till 1 month...

Not all gears that fail after installation was tampered with. There are factors that can cause even a brand new gear to fail. They include cooler line contamination, bad computer, bad electrical connection, bad engine load sensors, wrong calibration, etc.

Now, there are gears known to have factory failures over a short period. The flow control valves in Jatco (Nissan) CVTs is a typical example. The worse part is they send you chasing your tail because they keep reporting stepper motor code wrongly. Every unupdated used one you will buy comes with this problem, and you won't know. The solenoids that come with RE5F22A fitted in Nissans and other brands have bushing failure that shuts down the gear when hot. How do you know which one that has little life in it?

ZFs in BMW, RR etc are known to have individual solenoid failures. You won't know which is which unless you test each of them.

Hondas with their pocket filters are just waiting to happen.

Toyotas U660 with worn centre bearing could break loose any time and send aluminium particles gear wide. Who can tell without looking?

When rebuilding, these are stuffs to look out for. But untill we start getting standard rebuilds, used is the way to go.

A guy in US issues 5 year warranty, and we all think he is crazy! Well his charges no be here o.

I have used both options on two cars, on both occassions, the toks gave me my monies worth and satisfaction. Trying to repair bad gear is like trowing cash into the gutter. Thats my own take. BTW... The idiots that fix gears are not 'mechanics', they do more damage to ur engine components when moving ur gear. Thereby incurring more cost and future repairs. The last mech that fixed a toks gearbox for me is an angel, not a single item was damaged nor a strange problem popes up. Unlike the gearbox idiots that must damage ur power steering cups, several hoses and several belts, clips and etc just because they are not interested in ur engine but on the half-dead gearbox. Imagine paying 35k+ for repairs and they damage items worth 15k+ and still refill the gear with that useless oando dextron II which happens to be their favourite

In the professional way (that I know of) in doing this, there are four certifications:

Diagnostician (I consider it the most important)
R&R - Remove n Replace
Rebuilder
Master - all of the above

I agree completely with you that most gear mechanics create problems, because I have been a victim too. That is why there is training dedicated to even replacing them. If a mechanic is careless and incompetent, he will cause problems wether he replaces or repairs a gear. In any case, he will still drop the gear.

Last year (or year before), somebody called that his Acura ZDX lost oil on his way to Lagos and went bad. I sent him to a 'gear specialist' friend of mine, because I felt with the history, it should be a straight forward repair. That was where it started. First attempt, car went home to VI and gear died two days later.

Was towed back. After three weeks of back and forth, and endless calls from both mechanic and owner, I drove down to Festac to see for myself. First thing I noticed was Christmas lights adorning the instrument cluster! Owner confirmed they were not there when he brought the car there. I told mechanic gear would not shift well with those errors. To confirm that, I checked internal oil pressures, and compared with the pressure chat I had. They matched. Active test also showed all ranges were present. I asked him to get a very good electrician to fix all errors, but he was skeptical.

After one more week, they (himself and owner) got frustrated and bought another gear for 450K. They mounted it and told me it was shifting like new, to my pleasant surprise!

The next day, I got a call that went thus: "Oga, all the things wey dey do the other gear don dey do this one". I'm sure you know my response. I was done with them. You can imagine a technician in US that I have never met allowed me connect to his PC remotely from here just to get some diagnostic info on this gear!

The gear seller sent an electrician that corrected the errors for 30k. When done, the owner said he doesn't want the new gear again since nothing was wrong with his! They had to sort themselves out.

We shall get there some day.

cos rebuilding a gear is similar to being born again in Christianity..... a rebuilt gear should function like a brand new gear. .....
buying toks is buying used stuff.... cannot be like new.... plus the wear and tear of other non serviceable parts cannot guarantee optimal performance and/or oem lifespan....

my point being, a normal rebuild can cost more and should cost more in most cases, than a used swap!

to be fair sha, a new trans will cost more than twice of a standard Nigerian ideal toks....

Any transmission shop worth its salt issues warranty. Don't touch it if you cant warranty it. There are land mines, but professionalism will see you through.

That said, not every part in a gear needs to be replaced at rebuild. The reason is there are parts known to outlast the vehicle. I know a guy who even reuses clutch packs if good, and still warranties for 3 years! Why take out good clutches and then battle to achieve specified clearance?

Three years ago, I would replace all parts found in a kit but today, I know better. Some solenoids are indestructible. Stepper motors in CVTs hardly ever die. Some gears only need a valve replaced, or a bore resized. Some, like ZF need solenoid replacement only, while others need the solenoid bushing replaced. These small repairs would add thousands of miles to the gear, and cheaper than a used gear.

Some fixes are cheap, some are not. Now I'm learning minimum standard

Gears can be fixed or rebuilt. It depends on a number of factors.

I am yet to see any transmission shop in Nigeria that plays by the rules. They don't have the training, tools or parts to undertake quality jobs. When I get calls from some gear mechanics, I am shocked at how they work, given they are seen as pros around their area. In US for instance, rebuild is the standard. When they are not able to repair/rebuild the faulty gear, they buy used and tear apart. They are very concerned about warranties.

I bet you, some gears are better rebuilt than replaced with used units. This is because there are parts that are known to fail from factory, and only aftermarket parts fix them. If you buy used, you are buying the same problem, which will just happen with time. Nissans are notorious for this. There are times when just a solenoid, valve, or even parts as cheap as check balls can conk out a gear, and you are asked to replace it. Whenever you see that vehicle whose gear needs replacing every year, it is better rebuild with better parts.

Here, all the mechanics know is to replace 'fibre'. Few gears cannot be rebuilt if money meets the qualified tech. I mean, if you have a broken case, warped internal gears, worn planetary, and junk VB, you are better off with another core.

Mr Ibu actually had partial stroke during last Xmas. A relative came home from work and said Ibu was brought to the hospital his company uses that afternoon. The news was well managed, reason it just got out.

We all wished him well and continued with the celebrations. He must have fully recovered now.

I have the vehicle with me with the malfunctioning transmission. Drove it to Apo today in search of a solution. The transmission sellers showed me different types of transmission ( U341, U 240, etc). None is U250 that's my vehicle's specs. I refused to buy, even though they insisted "it didn't matter". One told me he's a global dealer and I cant teach him. I gladly walked away.

Still waiting for referral on a good mech in Abuja to help out....

He is a global ignoramus. U341 mates with 1.8 engines.

When you eventually find the correct transmission, also replace your radiator with a new one.

That's why I am asking questions sir. Some of us are not savvy when it comes to cars and machines. The inscription on the faulty gear is U250. Here is the Vin 2T1KE4EE8AC035303

I insisted that the 10pin transmission (whatever that means) be removed and replaced with the U250 I saw written on the faulty transmission. Kazeem claims they've tried 3 new transmission and none worked. I demanded that he put back the faulty transmission and return my vehicle.

I need a very good mechanic to help me fix this vehicle in Abuja. Any recommendations please?

From your VIN, what you should have is U250. Listen not to anyone who tells you otherwise.

Thank you for this awesome thread. I got a used 09/10 Toyota matrix off a lady. I noticed that when driving for long ( that is when the engine is hot, the transmission slips and the engine makes nice. After a while, the vehicle stops moving on drive, but works on reverse. This only happens when the vehicle has been used for a while and the engine is hot. When you park it for a while, it drives normal again.

The mechanic had it checked out and concluded that the transmission fibres are burnt. He added that the gear had been worked on before and advised that I do a transmission replacement.

I got a new transmission. The same mech told me that on dropping the old gear, it was discovered that the 13pin gear on it was meant for another vehicle (08 Camry), but worked on to fit into the matrix. He claimed to have put the right gear meant for the vehicle into it this time which he said is a 10pin transmission compatible with the 2AZ engine on the vehicle

However, I notice that the new gear stalls when shifting from 1 to 2 and the vehicle jerks when it eventually enters 2. Also, it doesn't stay long on 2 before it shifts to 3 with a less jerk. I asked the mech which type of transmission was used and he said Dexron 111. He claimed that the gear seller insisted on putting the transmission oil and that he would not bear responsibility if I use any other ATF and the gear didn't work. I initially wanted to give him Toyota ATF Type IV or WS to use for the new gear. The check light is also on and that has been like that even before the gear replacement. I intend to flush the transmission oil and replace it with Toyota Type IV, or WS. I also intend to get the vehicle scanned. To know the fault codes.

This transmission issues could be very frustrating...

If your engine is 2AZ, then you should have a U250 transmission (13pin), and not '10pin'. If unsure, post your VIN for decoding. I think you now have a wrong gear installed.

What people dont realise about the U660E is that due to the fact that it has its seperate TCU, if at any point the automatic transaxle is replaced, the transaxle's compensation code must be input into the TCM. The Transaxle compensation codes are unique, 60-digit
alphanumeric values printed on the QR label usually found on the body of the transaxle. If an incorrect transaxle compensation code is input into the TCM (or it is not input at all), shift shock will occur. This will require a high end diagnostic scanner for the transmission programming.

Well, not writing the compensator code will not stop it from working if every other thing is fine. That, just like clearing memory for U151 is to smoothen shifts quicker.

Roadside dudes install these gears without ever touching a scanner, and get them to work.

One interesting thing about auto transmissions is that a N200 rubber can ground a 700k transmission Many gears are better repaired/rebuilt than replaced with used. Nissans come to mind!
