baba, what are u saying na, I should go ahead with the project? I'll buy and u will help me fix the gear then over to Gazuzz for factory restoration then I resell!

good deal?

The gear is not the problem if you ask me. Once the engine is good and there are no other intermittent issues, you should be fine. About 200k should get the AC back. I see shocks and tyres as consumables.

You guys should take it easy with this guy. Bad transmission is not the end of the world. If the engine is good and transmission and AC are the only issues, it is not a very bad case. Moreover, this car is fitted with U151, and not U660.

excellent!

I once went to the market to buy that transmission, the seller showed me 2 units still attached to their engines, one of the transmissions did not look stock, I was inquisitive and told them to detach the transmission from the engine, I noticed on the torque converter, there was a sticker that stated transmission was rebuilt in 2017 cheesy @ over 200,000 miles, I did a quick vin check, and noticed the difference between sale mileage and rebuild mileage was less than 10,000miles. I grabbed it quickly and it's running fine till date. Seems the accord, MDX and other variants of V6 for that same year required a rebuild around the 200,000 mile marker

LOL! Oga Why you go grab the rebuilt one na? Shebi una talk say used sure pass cheesy But that must be the torque converter rebuild date, and not that of the transmission. It means the transmission rebuild date is even more recent than that.

AutoElectNG:
Final set of tests was aimed at confirming definitively that the step motor was out of order

First, we checked for resistance between CVT unit connector terminals.

Expected value is 30 ohms of resistance, we found 22.5 and 23.3 ohms of resistance respectively

Second, we checked for resistance between CVT unit connector terminals and ground.

Expected value is 15 ohms of resistance, but we found 12.0, 15.3, 15.5 and some other value, note not so clear smiley

So we confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt that we were dealing with a component fault and not a wiring fault

Is this resolved now?
Car Talk / Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by Kashif(m): 8:23pm On Aug 08, 2018
A good rebuild is better than used.

If somebody who just lost a powertrain is arguing that used is better, remind him he had a working used unit just days ago. If his vehicle was in an accident and the powertrain sold as working used, the new user would have ended up with a broken powertrain pretty soon.

Quality rebuild is only cheaper in select cases, where used ones are at bottom prices.

In transmissions for example, it's better to rebuild if you can find quality skill. Many transmissions are updated because of defective design or poor parts. Some are know to blow converters, crack drums, sheer off splines, vent poorly. There are regular updates to address these. There are Nissan CVTs that won't just go beyond 80k from factory. They need to be improved to get going.

If you buy used, how do you know if it has been updated? Used is faster, but anything can happen.

Car Talk / Re: Fuel Pumps In Nigeria. by Kashif(m): 8:01pm On Aug 08, 2018
Something is not just right with our petrol here. From low octane numbers to absolute contamination.

One thing to also consider on the discoloured pump assemblies is that most Nigerians drive their cars below half tank, with a large chunk of these only entering the petrol station when the low fuel indicator comes on. A close look at some of those assemblies shows discoloration at the upper part, meaning that the exposed part takes the heat (pun intended)

@Lilkech, what is paper clip method? The car is i4 and the ATF is Honda Z1 which was recommended in the car manual. Kindly recommend a competent techie with advance diagonistic equipment in Abuja, if you know any. Thanks all.

Be very careful with paperclip method, as the least you could get if gotten wrong is blown fuse. If there are codes set, a good scanner will pick same.

You still have not told us why you think second gear is being skipped. Is it being commanded?

Dear all, my Honda Accord 2010 model skips the second gear and makes a loud thud. This usually happens when the engine is hot. I have scanned it but it did not return any error codes. Pls, what could be the problem? Thanks.

How did you confirm it is skipping second?

At what AT temp does this start? Any recent repairs? Look for a competent tech.

Good day Nairalanders,

I have had an issue with my charging system before it worsened to a bad extent which i had no choice but to replace my alternator just after I changed my compressor and condenser. I have changed 3 alternators but the same issue persists. I placed the highest alternator amp which is 150V but still the same thing. The car charges fine when in motion but stops charging the battery when its idle. It starts draining the battery fast. Pls advice. Is it a bad wiring or the alternator is defective? HELP!!!!

Alternator is not the problem (alternator = generator btw).

Change your electrician before he frustrates you. Find a competent tech who knows voltage reading very well.

4 cyl, V6 doesn't matter. Brand matters a little more. In this case, the question isn't the high mileage. It's the fact that it's been tampered with. What else has been tampered with?

As long as a vehicle has 90% complete maintainance records, you can get at least 250k MILES out of it easily. A little maintenance goes a long way.

V6 will outlive I4 under the same engineering, driving and maintenance condition. But it is just the engine.

Generally, low mileage vehicles are BETTER than high mileage ones.

So why didn't your mechanic check something as basic as atf before telling you he does not fix gears? angry

The Mechanic may have mistakenly drained sufficient transmission oil before realizing but kept it to himself.
Check transmission oil level first.

I hope he remembered to connect the transmission oil cooler lines if he had to remove them and also did not cause sufficient fluid loss at that place.

If fluid loss is the issue, he should not have reverse also; given that reverse always demands higher pressure.

Tell your mechanic to carefully inspect his job and see what he failed to reconnect after the job, or disturbed during the job.

I agree with him.

Take a look at most 'gurus' on this forum( Ikenna351, and especially kashif) and you will see that he has said the truth.

Reading manuals is good, very good, but nothing beats hands-on, and learning from experts. There are myriad of issues the factory manual can't direct you on how to solve. Tough electrical issues for instance are not addressed by FMs. FMs also attend to card level maintenance, and not component level maintenance. Hence you will be seeing "If X, then replace Y assembly.

FMs have numerous limitations, but will help in comprehensive layouts.

And Yes, dealership solution can come from a tree shed chap. It doesn't matter if one believes it or not.

Car Talk / Re: Insearch Of Diagnostic Tool With ECU Programming(J2534 Flashing)capability In PH by Kashif(m): 5:27pm On Jul 11, 2018

Na wa for Hyundai Kia sef...

After exhaustive investigations and research, i realized that even the transmission replaced is not compatible! The TCU was never at fault.

The Transmission installed was from a KIA optima 2012 US spec vehicle. All drive ratios, compared with the originally designed transmission is the same( gears 1 to 6) but the final drive ratio is different (2.885 for US spec{2.4 GDI engine with 200HP output} ) as against 3.367 for the 'General' spec{2.0 Theta II MPI engine with 162 Hp output}). The general spec is the Nigerian export which Kia motors Nigeria sells.

The implication to this is that the output vehicle speed sensor(VSS) takes readings from the gear teeth from the final drive. Now this already gives a ratio of 2.885/3.367= 0.856 which causes a transmission flare particularly for gear shift 2-3 and 4-5 (as these identified shifts involves the release of brakes first, then the engagement of clutches) .

Now to my gurus: i am in a dilemma. i have a 2013 Hyundai Santa-Fe gear which i dismantled and removed some elements (clutch disks) for future use in case of clutch pack failure( long story for another day) . upon checking i realized that the final drive of this is 3.648 { 2.4 GDI 2WD}. i have confirmed that it will work if i swap the differentials, the final gear and the output speed sensor into the current gear( i don open that one too grin but no pics you hear tongue ) This will give me a ratio of 1.083.
What do you think?

N.B. This is purely from an engineering stand point and yeah yeah i know i will need to buy another gear but i want to be like kashif first and use my leave to have some fun grin

In trying to solve this (yourself), you may have complicated matters.

You have gone changing internal parts, which is sending you chasing your tail on this. It is hard to follow what you have done, which to me, is now looking like a moving target.

You have a Nigeria spec car, and you are throwing US spec parts at it. You may have two options now - 1. Get a US computer and mate with your current transmission. 2. Go to Kia Dealership and let them sell you a Nigeria spec transmission.

Just calm down. Remember what you saw with the U150?

"I was hungry, and you ignored me. All of you were avoiding me. The other person chased me with a stick. Many are coming to Adoration ground for pregnancy. I begged them for money; they have change in their hands, they looked at me and walked away. But they want something from God.

Many were beating me. My Stewards chased me far away. Intercessors were scared to pray for me. Just one person agreed to touch and pray for me. One person who didn't know it was me fed me with a spoon. She thought I was a mad man, but was not scared I may harm her. She fed me herself with a spoon.

Only five people helped. Amongst the Stewards, only 'Abuja' brought out money and gave me. All the people I allowed to be selling at the gate chased me away. Only one groundnut seller gave me a little. I went to where they are selling buns there, they rejected and chased me away.

I have told you that this week, if you see someone that needs help, do help," etc etc...

Hi, I have a 2004 MB W211 4MATIC. The box shift rough from 2-3 and vise versa, I also get an aggressive kind shift too when trying to negotiate a corner or any kind of incline, say I slow down and want to pick up again.

What do you think could be wrong with her.

Aggressive 2-3 should have aggressive 4-3 normally, which is usually caused by a K2 clutch failure.

A twist however is the hard shifts at inclines and bends. If you are losing gears at those circumstances, I would say check fluid level.

I am not sure if your car is equipped with a G-sensor, as it's failure will show when the vehicle is not driven level. Have you scanned?

Have you by chance used this tool. I thinks you mixing things up. I think you should use this tool so by then you would be able to change your mind set. Most European vehicles the maxi Sys elite would confidently work on. Not to forget the online programming capability does not require a pass thru for that. You need the autel subscription for this. With this you have two subscription to deal with. Autel and the dealership subscription. Not to forget the maxi Sys family has got a wide variety to choose from.

Yes, I have used the tool. You agree Maxi Sys can only program BMW and MB. When you say Maxi would confidently work on Most Europeans, remember we are talking about computer reflash, and not just setting changes.

What do you mean by online programming?
