JhyMedex:The bolded above leaves me a bit dumbfounded... Allow the Tully forces to match up North and maybe join up with somebody else (the Vale, perhaps) and then become another threat tomorrow? I doubt Jaime would be that stupid. Besides these "Tully forces" weren't much at all; i dont remember their numbers, but they were at most a few hundred. Plus they surrendered all their weapons and horses; what good is an unarmed soldier? If i were to guess where they went, i'd assume the few knights among them would eventually find their way to Seagard and take ship there to the Free Cities as sellswords. A few may take the black. The rest would probably resort to banditry, or else just wander around till they assimilate with the small folk. Most of this "force" were actually conscripted (as opposed to a paid soldier) and would be happier going back to their old peaceful lives, so I doubt they'd be quite eager to ride off to yet another war in the cold north. As for going North "to help Sansa", suffice it to say that's it simply impracticable. Even if they had their weapons and horses, how will they get to Winterfell? The Ironborn hold the Neck - or is it the Boltons? I misremember. Either way, none is a friend to the Riverlands. Of course the show producers can always "magic" them into Winterfell (like they did with Littlefinger and the knights he brought to the Battle of the Bastards), so i suppose the notion is not entirely impossible. Why did Brienne escape in the night? Well, perhaps it had something to do with the fact that it would look mighty suspicious to the rest of the Lannister army if Jaime finds her within Riverrun and doesn't arrest her for ransoming to her lord father... after she renounces House Stark and swears fealty to the Iron Throne, of course. See, Brienne and Jaime's "friendship" was a secret between them; Jaime is at heart a Lannister and Brienne knows this - she knows that their allegiances are not the same at all, and she wisely escaped to avoid putting Jaime in an awkward situation. |
arantess:Nice one. Season finale is almost a full-length movie... In your face, Vikings! ![]() |
<Book 2: A Clash of Kings:: pg 796/836> Some much happening, some much still to happen... Daenerys, 14 years old and acting it. Funny how i got the show's version mixed up in my head and kept expecting her dragons to be "dragon-napped". However i find it odd that inspite of all Daenerys has been through, she still retains her expectation of "entitlement" - people should do her favors simply cos she is Blood of the dragon. Compared to Jon Snow's very obvious growth/development in character, Daenerys seems stagnant. Tyrion, i'd already mentioned how it seemed like the power was getting to his head; his last chapter now confirms it. His bitterness at the way he is discarded is truly justified, but it is the power he's grown used to having that he seems to miss more. What interests me though is how he immediately assumes it was Cersei that ordered Ser Mandon Moore to kill him... No Cersei POV chapters yet, but her interactions with Sansa intrigue me. She seems to be completely aware of what she is and what people truly think of her, and yet is totally unfazed by it. In my opinion she is the most "Lannister-like" of all her siblings; she is prepared to do whatever needs to be done to secure her and her children's positions. Catelyn Stark, growing more and more bitter, snapping at both friend and foe. Perhaps i should feel sorry for her, but somehow i don't. Qhorin Halfhand. He's truly worth an honorable mention. And Josemyn Peckledon, the 14-year-old squire who killed 2 knights, wounded a 3rd, and captured 2 more. I'm tempted to say great things could be in store for young Josemyn, but this is GRRM... ![]() |
oluamid:My pleasure! |
<Book 2: A Clash of Kings:: pg 621/836> GRRM keeps finding ingenious ways to slip in tantalizing snippets of info... ![]() Jon Snow is poised to end Ygritte's life at the Skirling Pass and GRRM writes thus: He raised Longclaw over his head, both hands tight around the grip. One cut, with all my weight behind it. He could give her a quick clean death, at least. He was his father’s son. Wasn’t he? Wasn’t he?Wasn't he indeed?!! ![]() |
oluamid:Ehh... no. We got weasel soup cos of Jaqen H'qar. But i like the way you're thinking. ![]() |
What a courageous man. ![]() |
<Book 2: A Clash of Kings:: pg 420/836> I swear it, I saw. Are you blind, the girl loved him! Help her!... She is innocent, Robar. You have my word, on my husband’s grave and my honor as a Stark! ![]() But who will believe that the king was killed by a "shadow"? |
<Book 2: A Clash of Kings:: pg 344/836> The humiliation of Grandmaester Pycelle... artfully and masterfully executed by Tyrion. But it seems to me that by this point the power had started to get into Tyrion's head. He is doing a good job as Hand in his father's stead, but now he's enjoying the position so much he's almost forgetting that it is temporary... or is he actually working towards making his position permanent? Why else completely humiliate and eliminate Pycelle, his father's most loyal crony in the Small Council? - - - - Honorable mention of little 3-year-old "Weasel" that we last read of on pg 256... And Arya thought, Run, Weasel, run as far as you can, run and hide and never come back. There are scores of tragic stories between the pages of the ASOIAF series, but i personally find that of Weasel the saddest. Most people who've read the books don't even remember her - 2 going on 3, no real name and barely a description beyond small with matted hair. |
Santino1:Oh yes, it did. Irks me when i hear "love" cited as possible reason for Rhaegar's actions. Personally i feel even Rhaegar himself would find that insulting. |
moski5:Ehh, no they don't. And no, the bit with Drogo's wound not intentional either. Mirri maz Duur treated the wound with a pale green paste and red ointment that would burn and heal and leave a big scar; Drogo tore it off cos he misliked the pain and had his own healers make new "less painful" option. It was the "less painful" option that caused the gangrene... along with his drinking and poor diet. (AGOT: pg 614/753) |
Gbola5:Exactly. One thing the books have taught me is that no one is all good or all bad... everything and everyone is in shades of grey. Ser Barristan's account paints Rhaegar in a very positive light but I always take that story with a pinch of salt, because I feel GRRM (the author) was deliberately mocking the fantasy trope of "the wonderful, charming prince". If Rhaegar was such a wonderful and considerate man, why would he publicly scorn his wife, shame and insult the combined Houses of Baratheon, Martell, and Stark, and crown another man's betrothed as Queen of Love and beauty? Whatever reasons he had, was that the best place and way to show it? And please no one should gimme that lame excuse of love - only dewey-eyed little girls believe that. |
<Book 2: A Clash of Kings:: pg 126/836> I'm getting more and more impressed with GRRM's prose style. Not only does he restrict POV chapter to reveal only what that POV character is experiencing or thinking, he goes further to find ingenious ways of revealing insight into the thoughts/actions of other characters that the POV is interacting with. Case in point: Arya's POV interaction with Yoren during their flight from KL. The black brother peeled a fresh sourleaf from the bale in the wagon and stuffed it into his mouth. “Might be I should of left you where I found you, boy. All of you. Safer in the city, seems to me.”Now if you skimmed through the chapters (like I did on the first read), you'd most likely miss that bit and end up assuming that it was just plot amor to make Yoren take the kingsroad so that Arya could end up on a ship to Braavos... whereas the truth is the blackbrother had done the journey so many times in the past - all through the wars of Robert's rebellion and the Greyjoy uprising - and never had he seen the kinds of things he was seeing now. |
OP, Saw your topic earlier, decided to sit back a little and see what kind of comments come in... and I'm not surprised in the least. I understand your request for info from fellow geoscientists who managed to get into well paying positions in IOCs, but the truth is very few, if any, would want their online identities associated with such lucrative stories. It's not the sharing of information that is the problem, its the risk of having your I.D hacked, personal info retrieved, and then some not-so-nice gentlemen paying you a visit later in the evening. Sad, but its the reality. IOC-employed geos are extremely well paid and in a country as insecure as Nigeria, disclosing that you are one may not be such a good idea. Luckily though, i am not one. ... but i know a few. I studied geophysics, graduated some donkey years ago and had a shot with SPDC's SITP program. Passed all the tests and interviews like no man's biz, and got invited for medicals... and that was it. They kept me waiting for almost 18months and then one morning like that, i got a mail that Shell was no longer interested in continuing my employment process. Sh!t like that can devastate a young man; i know it devastated me... But hey, I've since moved on.Ok, that was my story. But you're not interested in that; what you want is how you can succeed where i failed. No problem, I'll tell you. 1) A Masters degree 2) Some experience, the closer to your desired job role, the better. That's how most OND holders get in: they've got experience while all you have is a piece of paper. 3) Network. If you have any relative or friend already employed there, better start kissing his or her ass now. 4) Luck. That's right, pure dumb luck... a lots of it. 5) Perseverance. The fanatic kind... cos that's the only way you'll dedicate 10yrs of your life just to get an employment offer from Exxon. Finally, a word of advice: Geoscience is a very dry field right now; new drilling contracts are virtually nonexistent worldwide, so you need to decide if that's a field you want to go into. Learn an alternative skill; if it can also be applied to you chosen geo-career, even better. But whatever you do, don't spend your youth waiting for a job offer that may never come. Cheers. |
Twelve30:Local online stores? As in, based in Nigeria? Naa, none that i know of... which is why i felt shipping costs would be exorbitant. You can try amazon.com if you can afford it. I know 2 bookshops in Port Harcourt that used to stock it though, but they won't ship. You'd have to go there yourself, or send someone: Whitney Plaza - Orazi rd, and The Atrium - Peter Odili rd. |
Dude where did you dig this out from? 2010 ish ![]() Like yahoo, like criminals... ![]() |
BoleAndFish:Well... its only the most popular thread on NL TV/Movies section. |
^^ I am the watcher on the couch ![]() |
Gbola5:I have steadfastly stayed away from all TWOW chapters. I have sworn to wait for another decade if that's what it takes GRRM to finish the book, and then read it "fresh from the kitchen". I've heard a number of theories flying around though... |
oyetpel:Nope! Not in the least. I'll be the first to sing what an outstanding job the show producers have done - casting, production sets, effects - best I've seen on the small screen. But look what happened as soon as the source material got exhausted, huge plot holes started yawning everywhere. Mind you, all that still doesn't even slightly diminish my excitement for season 7, plot holes and all... but i honestly hate to imagine what will happen with a spin-off. |
Twelve30:Where you at? You can buy online though and have it shipped to you... but shipping costs could cost you an arm and half. |
jonsnow92:Saw it about an hour ago. Noticed a couple of things... - Daenerys lands first on Dragonstone... and it appears Melisandre is there as well. - The Unsullied make short work of Cersei's forces... but i bet it won't stop D& from pulling a plot amor and make her miraculously win after all.- Arya is north, way up north... beyond the Wall? - Jon putting the hurt on Littlefinger... but i doubt he kills him. - Was that Jorah's hand? - It appears Ellaria Sand has hooked up with Yara... - That shot of Theon, mmm, i don look taya, can't glean anything from it. - It appears Euron will make it rain fire at sea. - No shot of Ghost. |
Vivly:I have read AWOIAF... but the comment is appreciated nonetheless. The quote is actually the first words Jaqen spoke to Arya. |
<Book 2: A Clash of Kings:: pg 77/836> "Boy," a friendly voice called out. “Lovely boy.... A man could use another taste of beer..."And thus we are acquainted with No One named Jaqen H'ghar. ![]() |
armadeo:Naa, I read the first 4 books around late 2011 (it was really season 1 of the TV series that drew me in), and then the 5th in 2012 (i think). Unfortunately i read the books all in a kind of rush and i ended up disappointed with the last 2 books cos i was mostly concerned with the Starks and Daenerys back then. It was only months later when i started frequenting online boards and wikia that i realize how much I'd missed... Of course I've since filled myself in on all the parts i missed - and even came up with a few thin-foil theories of my own - but now i want to do a proper re-read of the entire series. So yeah, i already know all there is to know, but actually taking my time now to slowly and deliciously eat up every single word the way GRRM framed it... well, it feels like eating my cake and still having it. ![]() |
<Book 1: Game of Thrones:: Completed> Well, it certainly was a pleasure re-living all 753 pages of it. Overall personal rating: A solid 5/5 Personal note: The book is so so much richer than the TV show. And this richness - characters, locations, histories, lore/legends - this is what makes re-reading the books so much fun. So many things i overlooked the first time that i am truly appreciating now. Thank you, GRRM. ![]() On to Book 2: A Clash of Kings. |
![]() Ibori don't mind them, its them looking for your trouble. Oya come lemme give you the £1 compensation... Don't cry o... Oya collect biscuit join.. |
<Book 1: Game of Thrones:: pg 724/753> THE KING IN THE NORTH!!(sobbing...) Long may he reign. |
Smellymouth: ![]() |
<Book1: Game of Thrones:: pg 692/753> The birth had left her too raw and torn to take him inside of her, as she would have wanted, but Doreah had taught her other ways. Dany used her hands, her mouth, her breasts. She raked him with her nails and covered him with kisses and whispered and prayed and told him stories, and by the end she had bathed him with her tears. Yet Drogo did not feel, or speak, or rise... |
oluamid:Ahh but if she was truly a Stark, she'd not beg a man that was almost breaking his vows to his liege lord. And if it had been a question of sending a Tully with "weight", the Blackfish would have gone. I personally think GRRM was deliberately showing a flaw in her (Catelyn's) character. Think about it, how do you think she would have reacted if, let's say Edmure, had gone and came back with those terms? Several fosterings and squireship, knighthoods, plus two (not even one, TWO!) marriage alliances with the Warden of the North's trueborn children - one with the Stark heir himself... all to allow passage to an army coming to liberate his own liege lord's castle and lands! Is dat not 419?? I can imagine her publicly nodding and thanking Edmure for his efforts, and then privately asking in a fury-laden whisper why he hadn't just given away Riverrun to Lord Frey while he was at it... ![]() |
oluamid:Thanks! I fully intend to... and will be doing it all the way down to Book 5. |
