And the War of the Five Kings begins...
So Catelyn was literally humbly begging for passage? From her Lord father's own bannerman? And yet not up 3 chapters before she was sternly reminding Robb to not display weakness in front of his bannermen. I really must have skimmed past these chapters the first time; what i remember instead is the Tv show version where Catelyn seemed more bold...
Turns out Khal Drogo's wounds were actually a trifle bit more serious than the tv show potrayed.
And Ned Stark admits to himself that he really had been foolish. I've always thought he only regretted being betrayed by Baelish.
The book is slowly but steadily winding to its end. |

Re-reading the events leading up to Ned Stark's betrayal is like a mixture of intrigue and mild dread... i already know what will happen and yet i'm still amazed at how it unfolds. Poor Ned, sinking under the weight of his precious honor, and making all the wrong decisions.
But i have to admit some part of me (probably my rational part) is actually rooting for the Lannisters now; what if the tables were turned? What would Catelyn do if she'd been in Cersei's shoes? Or Ned in Tywin's shoes? One thing is for sure though, if it'd been Benjen Stark (or Robb or Jon Snow or any other Stark) in Tyrion's shoes, they'd never have survived the Eyrie.
And in other news.... abeg, is Sansa a complete clueless air-headed nitwit, or is it just me? |

oluamid: Here's you commenting with the benefit of hindsight. I'm sure on your first read you were rooting for Neddy all the way. Unfortunately for our man Ned, he didn't have the benefit of hindsight and in the game of thrones, you win or you die, or lose a head. Actually i watched the tv show first, the first season anyway. And then i went hunting for the books... So, yes i did root for him initially, but as soon as i started on books, my opinion changed. I missed a lot of things on the first read cos i was mostly interested in "what happened next" (and mind you this was YEARS ago), but i still remember thinking "this man is thinking with his heart instead of his head... But it was Catelyn Stark that i first began to dislike in the books.. 1 Like |

Re-reading the series... Book 1: Game of Thrones.
... and so it comes to me that Ned Stark is quite an idiot and incredibly naive. Your wife kidnaps the son of the current most-powerful Lord in the land, and you boldly declare that she did so on your orders, then you quarrel with your king, loudly denouncing him as a coward and resign as his second-in-command, only for you to go sauntering around Kings Landing that same night with only 3 guards... for real?! I mean, are you insane or just plain stupid??
This is like leaving your queen idle halfway across the chessboard, attacking with just one pawn and leaving your king completely exposed... and then hoping that your opponent will be honorable enough to not exploit your weakness. |

Finally began my planned re-read of thee entire book series... and i've already noted quite a number of things, for example: its not the White Walkers' ice swords that shatters regular steel, its the White Walkers themselves that make that happen (can't say how, though). In the prologue, Waymar Royce actually fought the Other with his longsword, crossings blades several times until he got tired and slow... then the next time he crossed the steel on the ice sword, it shattered. Again and again the swords met, until Will wanted to cover his ears against the strange anguished keening of their clash. Ser Waymar was panting from the effort now, his breath steaming in the moonlight. His blade was white with frost; the Other’s danced with pale blue light. Then Royce’s parry came a beat too late...
The Other said something in a language that Will did not know; his voice was like the cracking of ice on a winter lake, and the words were mocking. Ser Waymar Royce found his fury. “For Robert!” he shouted... When the blades touched, the steel shattered. In the meantime, I've read up to this spot: Wheels within wheels within wheels... |

Tapout: what if Tyrion is actually a tygarean? I've always had the feeling tywin isn't his biological father. i Did a little research and I got this.
Before then I hope u guys remember tywin's comment in Season 3 finale, "I will raise you as my son. Because you are a Lannister." You don't say these things to someone who is your son.
1.Tyrion's eye and hair color doesn't match his father or siblings.
This is not apparent in the TV Show, but in the books it's very pronounced. Jaime and Cersi have the "typical" Lannister look, golden blonde hair and bright green eyes. Tywin also has these traits. However, (in the books) Tyrion has pale blonde hair, possibly a mix between Lannister golden blonde and Targaryen silver grey. Tyrion's eyes are mismatched - one is green, and the other is black, which is a common sign of cross-breeding.
Also consider Tyrion's dwarfism, which seems to mirror another Targaryen trait - many Targaryen mothers gave birth to monstrosities similiar to the stillborn child Daenerys had at the end of the first book, scaly half-man-half-dragon creatures. Some even possessed wings. Tyrion is not nearly this ugly but could be a step in that direction considering the Lannisters are normally so beautiful.
2. Aerys Targaryen was infatuated with Joanna Lannister, Tywin's wife, and is rumored to have slept with her.
This was common knowledge, as was Aerys' distaste for Tywin.
From Barristan Selmy: Prince Aerys . . . as a youth, he was taken with a certain lady of Casterly Rock, a cousin of Tywin Lannister. When she and Tywin wed, your father drank too much wine at the wedding feast and was heard to say that it was a great pity that the lord’s right to the first night had been abolished.
From the World of Ice and Fire (written by GRR Martin):
It has been reliably reported that King Aerys took unwonted liberties with Lady Joanna's person during her bedding ceremony, to Tywin's displeasure. Not long thereafter, Queen Rhaella dismissed Joanna Lannister from her service. No reason for this was ever given, but Lady Joanna departed at once from Casterly Rock and seldom visited King's Landing.
Joanna Lannister did make a raw appearance at King's Landing for the Anniversary Tournament in 272AC, when King Aerys embarrassed Joanna and Tywin in front of the full King's court. Less than 1 year later... Tyrion was born.
If this theory is true, then we can easily understand why Tywin hates Tyrion - Tywin's wife died giving birth to another man's son which Tywin must raise or risk public humiliation.
3. Tyrion was obsessed with dragons as a child, even dreaming about them. This was common among Targaryens. Still a weak bit of evidence.
4. Tywin says Tyrion isn't his son, multiple times. Of course, Tywin could be lying to wound Tyrion. However, this comment from Tywin is suspect:
You are an ill-made, spiteful little creature, full of envy, lust and low cunning. Men's laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors, since I cannot prove that you are not mine.
5. Tyrion survives contact with greyscale, and Targaryens may be immune to the disease. In A Dance With Dragons, Tyrion survives a nasty greyscale exposure untouched and yet Jon Connington, who rescues Tyrion, succumbs to the disease. Tyrion also survives exposure to the bloody flux. Daenerys Targaryen believed her family was immune:
“Have you ever seen a dragon with the flux?” Viserys had oft claimed that Targaryens were untroubled by the pestilences that afflicted common men, and so far as she could tell, it was true. She could remember being cold and hungry and afraid, but never sick.
However, Maegelle Targaryen died of greyscale 200 years before the events in the books. Targaryens still may be immune though.
what do u guys think?? Lemme put it this way: the R+L=J theory was built on even less facts. If the show was canon, that "please don't eat the help" scene would have cemented Tyrion's targaryen parentage. |

Vorpal: I agree with you. Tywin was a cold ruthless shrewd lord...
My only dislike for him was the fact that he could not just see passed the hate he had for Tyrion... Do you know what? I'm been thinking about Tywin since yesterday, and I've come to acknowledge an aspect of his character that I never gave much thought to before: His indifference to the horrors that his orders eventually lead to. The rape and butchering of Elia and her children. The sacking of Kingslanding. The desolation of the Riverlands. The Red wedding. Tywin's bannermen and allies may have gone beyond his orders to perpetuate these horrors, but Tywin himself never saw fit to reprimand any of them. He was totally unconcerned, per his mantra: Lions do not concern themselves with the opinion of Sheep. So now I'm wondering, is that evil or not? |

I am igbo. I was born several years after the civil war, but i still grew up to see the marks it left on my parents and grandparents. And yet, all all that notwithstanding, I still believe in a united Nigeria. Not because of some misguided sense of loyalty or patriotism or the ugly brand of partisan politics that we practice in this country now. No, I believe because I know for a fact that there is true strength and huge potentials in Nigeria's diversity and variety. I look at the United States and I see what Nigeria has the potential to become. But first, we need to tell ourselves the truth about our past...
Like many Nigerians, I studied history in secondary school. All I was taught about Nigeria's civil war was a 3-sentence paragraph in the chapter about post-colonial west africa. Three sentences... to cover the whole period of bloody coups and gruesome civil war.
Look at France. Look at Belgium/Netherlands. Look at the U.S. These are places where bitter civil wars were fought over class differences, ideologies and religion; where brothers fought and killed brothers... Just like we did. The only difference is that in the end, they sat down and acknowledged the truth of what happened. They didn't sugarcoat the story, or sweep their atrocities under the carpet. No, they wrote it down as it truly happened, and taught it to their children and to their children's children. Almost every mass killing or execution or battle, all the events leading up to the fighting and wars, all documented. And in time, the aggressor and the victim both, came together and mutually forgave each other. Children and young adults learn of it in their schools - learn what happens when a nation turns on itself... And their nations have grown stronger because of it.
The first step to true reconciliation is truth.
We need to come together and open up about what we did to each other. Not just write it in books for the few interested scholars to read in solitude. We need to say out loud and teach it to our children in schools. A National-organized open field invitation to all who witnessed the events and are still alive to come and tell their stories... so that we can truly forgive each other.
Until then, Nigeria - or whatever it becomes tomorrow - will continue to limp along. |

Vorpal: It is not for the common man to be bothered with in the first place especially a setting based on nobility. Why you saying books are hard to come by for them seem odd to me.
In any case, once you are a noble you should be concerned by all things that involves you and your endeavors that concerns nobility. Else cersi would never have visited the witch.
Or is it hotpie that would be looking for a soothsayer to predict his chances to the iron throne? The books are hand-written; of course they'd be hard to come by. Think medieval Europe. You and I have the privilege being VIEWERS and seeing ALL angles of the story. We saw the white walker right from episode 1 of season 1; we saw Jon Snow resurrected; we saw Dany in the House of the Undying and heard the prophesies given to her - and so we KNOW these prophesies are real. But the nobility of Westerosi neither saw nor heard any of these first-hand. Remember Ned Stark dismissing the Night's watch deserter's stories as "a mad man sees what he sees.."? Even the late Commander Joer Mormont had to see a wight before he believed it - and even then he STILL doubted that the white walkers were back. My point is, the majority of Westerosi nobility are concerned with nobility stuff - winning wars, being in the King's favor, making the best marriage match and all such schemes; little privileged brats like past Cersei and Jaime are even less concerned about such stories of prophesies - they just want to joust and party and seek illicit fun like visiting an old witch. As for the small folk, they just want to survive. The ONLY people who are truly concerned with stories of wights and promised princes are: (1) the FEW really learned (or "enlightened", like the priests of R'hllor) who have read enough of the old scrolls to know that these aren't mere stories, (2) the men of Night's watch and the free folk north of the wall, and (3) you and I the viewers who have see everything. |

Vorpal: Why was Cersei curious? What did her curiosity centered on?
How do you know about that? It was explicitly stated or implied in the series? Why is any little noble-born brat curios? I would've thought the answer is obvious enough - because they are privileged and can afford to. Do you see Gendry or Hot-pie going around looking for prophecies? |

@BraniacX Ok i just re-read and realized you were refering only to the wedding (not the product of the wedding). But i still doubt Varys knew.
In Westeros, a wedding is not binding until it is consumated in a bedding (which was why Tywin was insisting that Tyrion get Sansa pregnant). Now if Varys knew of R+L wedding, he would have made great efforts to verify if it was consumated - just one inconspicuous spy snuck into Dorne during those late months to keep an eye on the Tower of Joy. But it doesn't look like Varys did any such thing... which infers to me that he knew nothing of the wedding. |

BraniacX: Jon might view sansa as a beloved sister, but they are actually cousins and in westeros, cousins can marry, (tywin lannister married his cousin) Varys would have information because that is his job as master of whispers, and rhaegars father had him keeping tabs on rhaeghar Until Ned Stark's arrival at the Tower of Joy, ONLY the 3 kingsguards with Rhaegar knew of Jon Snow's parentage, and they never lived to tell anyone. If Varys had known, he would have done a lot more than just watch Ned Stark gallivant off to Winterfell and raise the heir to the Iron Throne as a bast@rd for the next 17 years. Compare with how he kept tabs on Viserys and Daenerys across the Narrow Sea (and even actively nurtured "Young Griff" through Connington in the books). The thing is, the master of whispers doesn't know everything. For instance, here are 3 past things he didn't know until they were no longer secrets: Daenerys Targaryen hatched 3 dragons, Tywin Lannister's Red Wedding scheme, and Sansa's whereabouts after she disappeared from Kings Landing. And here are a few more things he still doesn't know up till now: the white walkers are real, a true-born male Stark still lives, the whereabouts of Arya Stark, Jaime Lannister re-learning to fight with his left hand, Stannis Baratheon killed his brother... |

A letter addressed to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on the recent arrest of Lagos PDP chieftain Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi (BOG), who has been in detention since February 22, 2017.
Your Excellency,
I refer you to the story below:
http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/224331-security-operatives-arrest-lagos-pdp-chieftain-gbadamosi-wife.html
There are many signs of an irresponsible government and one clear one is the way it treats its citizens who are opponents of the government. You are not an irresponsible man and there is nothing so far in your action, comments or carriage since you have been piloting the affairs of this nation as the Acting President to indicate otherwise. However, it would seem some overzealous, agenda-driven state officials and security operatives want to tag you with a name that does not belong to you. We do not think you should let them.
Mr. Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi (BOG), a Lagos-based citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been in detention since Wednesday, 22nd of February, 2017. You would expect that immediately upon his arrest, the Department of State Security (DSS) would inform the world why they are doing it. You would think they would question him and free him within 24 or 48 hours (on bail or unconditionally) or charge him to court for whatever offence they think he’s committed and allow the magistrate or judge determine if he’s entitled to bail. But, up till now we’ve heard nothing. Mr Gbadamosi is still held incommunicado in detention, the world does not know why they are keeping him there because the DSS isn’t saying anything and they just think this is okay.
Well, it’s not okay. They have to free him now. He’s a patriot, a businessman and a family man; he is not a criminal. Whatever the reason for the arrest, such a reason has been made otiose by the unlawful manner they have kidnapped and detained him since Wednesday, 22nd of February, 2017. He should immediately be released. If the DSS has any case, they should go to court after he’s been released. Mr Gbadamosi is an outstanding Nigerian with the courage of his conviction; he will not go anywhere, he will answer them in a proper court of law if they charge him there.
Sir, we are urging you to use your good offices to ensure that Mr Gbadamosi is released immediately. We know that this unlawful behaviour by the security services is something you feel strongly about. In fact, just a few weeks ago, Nigerians listened to you berate the Nigerian Police for keeping suspects in detention longer than legally permissible. You spoke at the Lagos State Ministry of Justice Stakeholders Summit through the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami who represented you at the occasion. You stated clearly that this practice is against our collective interest and urged practitioners and stakeholders to “make a firm commitment to tackle the problems by changing our attitude and standing up for what is right”. The DSS obviously hasn’t read the memo. This is an opportunity for you to show Nigerians that you really believe what you preached at that Summit.
Please, order the immediate release of Mr Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi and use that to send a clear message to all and sundry that a government that you head will not constitute itself into an enemy of the people.
Mr Gbadamosi should be set free unconditionally! He should be set free now!
Thank you in advance for treating this with the urgent attention it deserves!
God bless you! God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Yours faithfully,
Kennedy Emetulu
