MultiChoice Africa is said to be having discussions with MTN, South African telecommunications company, regarding the sale of the company.

Naspers Limited, parent company of MultiChoice Africa is the franchise owner of DStv and GOtv.

The offer of MultiChoice Africa will not affect the South African division of the TV network although the plans have not been made public.



“A sale is one of a number of options being considered by Africa’s biggest company by market value, and a final decision hasn’t been reached. Naspers and MTN Group have briefly discussed a deal for MultiChoice Africa, but no agreement was reached”.

Both companies confirmed on Thursday that they are still in talks about sharing TV content, video-on-demand services, on smartphones.

The only reasonable explanation I have for this is about investors confidence. I do not think investors ( foreign and local ) have confident in President Buhari anymore, hence the fall of dollar against naira anytime he travels.

This occurrence was actually the opposite at first. During the first three month of Buhari administration there was high investors confidence hence the favourable increase in NSE.

Genco in Nigeria will be free to generate and sell electricity directly to end users across the country with a very little interference from the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) , the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has declared.

The declaration, which was signed by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola was made known to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Tagged as the ‘eligible customers’ regime, the declaration, NERC said in a statement on Friday in Abuja, was signed off by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.

The statement announcing this was signed by NERC’s Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Usman Arabi. It said its declaration was legally backed by the provisions of Section 27 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act 2005 (EPSRA), adding that it represented a major policy directive which now grants electricity consumers under this category the right to buy power directly from Gencos almost unhindered.

NERC stated that under the regime, Fashola signed off four categories of eligible customers to become operative in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The first category of eligible customers, it noted, comprises a group of end-users registered with the NERC and whose consumption is not less than two megawatts (MW) and connected to a metered 11kV or 33kV delivery point on the distribution network. This group would however be subjected to a distribution use of system agreement for the delivery of electrical energy.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has announced the names of 67 lawyers and 24 academics who are being considered for admission into the rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for 2017.

Secretary of the LPPC and Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Ahmed Saleh, announced in a public notice on Wednesday that the shortlisted lawyers have scaled through the first and second filtration processes and have been found worthy to attend the interview preparatory to the award of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The Lagos State Government Monday formally inaugurated the state-owned oil company, Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation (IOGC), as a business arm of the state in the oil and gas industry.

Speaking at the formal inauguration of the company’s corporate head office in Lagos, the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, said the initiative was another giant step in the determination of the state to leverage on the recently acquired status of oil producing state in Nigeria.
He said the company was set up to manage the downstream and upstream activities of the state and protect the interest of all stakeholders.

“Lagos State is at the threshold of witnessing a boost in economic growth and employment generation given the evolving developments in its investment climate, particularly the oil and gas sector. The Dangote refinery, the largest in Africa and one of the biggest in the world, will soon come on stream at the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ).

This multi-billion dollar investment will effectively complement the oil exploration activities of Yinka Petroleum and other oil exploration companies that will also operate in the Dahomey Basin in the future. This will complete the Lagos State oil and gas security tripod of exploration and logistics in the western axis, refining in the eastern axis and funding and exportation through the banks and the ports in the central axis,” Ambode explained.

The governor said with the inauguration of the office complex, the Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation is being positioned to become a leading player in the oil and gas industry.
He said his government was aware of the multiplier effects that a viable oil and gas industry would bring about in terms of investment opportunities that would be created in allied industries and sectors of the state economy.

According to him, this has been the main driving force behind his commitment to develop strategies and policies that will continue to ease the process of doing business in the state.
Ambode, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Olawale Wasiu Oluwo, added that “as a government, we are also not unmindful of the potential risks inherent in the oil and gas exploration industry in terms of oil spills, underwater aquatic contamination, gas flaring, community conflicts, youth restiveness, and health and safety issues.”

He, however, noted that the state government is taking proactive measures and would soon commit substantial investment to prevent possible occurrence of these challenges.
In her welcome address, the Managing Director of the company, Ola Debayo-Doherty, stated that to flag off the company’s operations, the company is finalising the front –end engineering design and development work on a gas commercialisation project to be completed in 2019.

According to her, the project will enable the achievement and realization of the state’s aspiration to make a step change and become the preferred business hub in Africa and also grow its economy to transform into the desired mega city.

The Northern Elders Forum has maintained that the North must retain the presidency if Buhari's failing health prevents him from seeking re-election in 2019.
While speaking in an exclusive interview with New Telegraph, the spokesman of Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Professor Ango Abdullahi, disclosed that should President Muhammadu Buhari’s failing health prevents him from seeking re-election in 2019, the North must retain the presidency.

The elder statesman stressed that the region must be allowed to field a presidential candidate through the All Progressives Congress (APC), in 2019 should Buhari fail to seek re-election.

He said in the situation of any eventuality, the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo should be allowed to complete the current tenure but will not be allowed to contest in 2019.

Abdullahi said, “The constitutional provision says that in the event that the president dies in office or becomes incapacitated for one reason or the other and cannot perform the duties of his office, he will be succeeded by the Vice president.

“But no one is in a position to know at what point he is going to recover fully and come back to office, or whether the unexpected could happen. The northern elders insist that Osinbajo cannot replace Buhari in 2019

“If the worst case scenario happens, and Buhari is not back on seat, the constitution is very clear that the vice president takes over.

“And what we then expect is that he will take that tenure to its logical end and from there, the politics of power sharing will take precedence over anything else.

“When the unexpected happens, in 2019 we will be back to our position that the north should be treated equitably and fairly. And we expect that another northern candidate will emerge as presidential candidate on the platform of APC.”

Abdullahi lamented that the north is still marginalized in spite of the fact that Buhari is president. “To be fair and truly honest, I will say that yes, our expectations have been far above what we saw on ground. Meaning that what we were expecting from this government in terms of equity and justice to the north has not materialized up till now,” he said.


According to him, the North is still being cheated in spite of the fact that one of its own is president.

“For example, if you look at both the 2016 and 2017 budgets, if you combine capital and recurrent expenditures for both years, the North took roughly 30 per cent in spite of the fact that everybody knows that even if it’s by one per cent, the north is more populated than the South. Even in terms of landmass, the North constitutes 75 per cent of the landmass of this country,” he pointed out.

The NEF spokesman blamed Buhari for giving key ministries in his administration to southerners “who don’t feel shy of looking after themselves first before the North, even if it’s on second thoughts.”

Abdullahi said that some of the projects that should improve the living standard in the North have been abandoned even by this administration.

“Take, for example, the Mambila Power Project, the dredging of River Niger, the Ajaokuta Steel and so on. Of course, you can also blame past northern leaders who were in power when these projects were just brushed

A total of 335 foreign nationals were on Tuesday in Abuja granted citizenship by the Federal Government after statutory clearance and due diligence by the relevant security agencies.‎

‎The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau,‎ who presented the certificates of citizenship to the foreigners, charged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Mrs Lara Oshiomhole, Wife of former Governor of Edo, Adams Oshiomole‎, who is from Cape Verde, is one of the recipients.

Dambazau in his remarks said that 335 applicants were approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in January, out of the over 500 foreigners that applied.

He explained that 245 of the foreigners approved were granted Citizenship by‎ Naturalisation while 90 were by Registration, mainly foreign women married to Nigerians.

“Let me say that application for the Citizenship of Nigeria which can be by Naturalisation or Registration is provided for in Chapter 3, Sections 26 and 27 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ the minister explained.

The minister said that the approval was part of government’s effort on the “Ease of doing business in Nigeria” and boosting Nigeria’s image in line with international best practice.

He tasked the “new Nigerian citizens” to be of good conduct, respect the rights and customs of their communities and contribute to the development of Nigeria.

Damabazau said the last time such ceremony was conducted was in December, 2013 and pledged to ensure its sustenance on an annual basis for proper scrutiny.

Dr Lamabert Shumbusho, from Rwanda, who responded on behalf of the recipients, thanked the Federal Government and pledged their loyalty and commitment to the development of Nigeria.

NAN reports other recipients include nationals from Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan, China and some African countries, most of whom are business moguls who have been operating in Nigeria for years.

The Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) are charged with the responsibility of processing applications for Naturalisation from foreign nationals who have stayed/lived in Nigeria for a minimum of 15 years and those by Registration who are mainly married to Nigerians. Expectedly, Nigerians were bombarded with pictures from the glamorous event and news of how the otherwise sleepy airport in the city received at least 30 private jets as the guest list was filled with who-is-who in Nigeria: captains of industry, politicians, former heads of state and presidents, and current top-ranking government officials.

Many commentators on social media pointed out how at the event, the fissures of the Nigerians society that are amplified by politics and often by even some of the politicians at the event disappeared. There was no Christian or Muslim, Northerner or Southerner, APC or PDP there – none of that mattered.

This scenario is not exclusive to this wedding, but it is what plays out often among Nigerian elites, politicians and power brokers. They are not beholden to the identities we know them most by – for them, ethnicity, religion and party affiliations are simply cards that they play in order to get a seat at the table of power and access to the benefits that come with it.

Right from pre-independence days, Nigerian politics has been dominated more by the ethnic, religious and regional calculations of the period and of the players than by the ideas with which they hope to govern the country and its component units.

In the Fourth Republic, for instance, we have had two federal elections dominated by this: the 2011 elections which was dominated by the talk of zoning and power rotation, especially within the PDP which then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan was accused of usurping; and the 2015 elections which had the undertones of a power shift to the North.

Yet, in spite of all this, it is evident that political power in the hands of any segment of the population has not translated to economic development for that population; rather, it has ended in the enrichment of its elites. The eight years of the Obasanjo presidency did not make any particular difference in either the South-West neither did Jonathan’s five years on the South-South nor all the years that the North has been in power improved the standard of living in the region.

It shows without a doubt that the problems that assail Nigeria, on a general level, cut across: poverty is neither exclusive to the North nor the South, or to Muslims or Christians. Neither is corruption, illiteracy, poor healthcare, weak infrastructure, etc.

However, with each election, we only have an elite that further entrenches their personal economic interests and new elites that join their ranks. Also, with election, they use we the people, as fodder by whipping up sentiments and emotions while they climb our backs into power and wealth while we remain mired in the same old problems.

As such, it is imperative that Nigerians wake up to the realisation that we have to stop letting these politicians, who like wily old foxes, keep pulling us hither and thither by using the politics of religion, ethnicity and even party affiliation.

We must insist that politicians lead with the ideas they have for Nigeria rather than who should be in power based on their creed or ethnicity.

We are the marketplace and we have the power to define what value means to us. As long as we refuse to make the insistence that value in politics to us is not about the religious faith, ethnicity or the party affiliations of those in power but rather ideas and plans that will improve the fortunes of the country and our situation, the status quo will remain.

They will continue to tap into our sentiments and make us hate each other over irrelevancies while they meet at weddings and festivities, clinking glasses, making merriment and laughing at their good fortunes, and sadly, our own misfortunes.

This should be a wake-up call.
