Military Barracks

Maiduguri, Bornu

Military trucks with soldiers enter the barracks, the truck pulls over as soldiers begin jumping out the back in full army uniform and complete kit with big bags, they are led to a small quarters where they rest.

Biola had always wanted to be in the army, he looked nervously excited as they headed to the quarters, he constantly looked around as he walked, they entered the large room full of floor beds lined up on both sides of the wall

‘’Pick a bed… in 15mins you all assemble outside’’ a commander said as he walked away. Biola gets a bed, dropped his bag on the floor then sat on the bed as he thought to himself. The trainings were over and he was now a soldier and will be facing the real situations, he thought about the sound of grenades and gun firing, he thought about killing terrorists then he smiled to himself believing fully that he was going to slaughter Boko Haram terrorists with easy, after all he has had intense trainings, ones the terrorists never had

‘’Biola’’ Ibrahim called back his attention

‘’What are you thinking about?’’ Ibrahim asked

‘’O boy I can’t wait to carry gun and kill those bloody terrorists’’ he said

‘’No be only you… We will kill enough’’ Ibrahim replied and shook Biola then pulled him up; soon they are called out to assembling, they form lines and stood at ease while a Major addressed them

‘’You all will be divided into two groups, the first group stays here, the second will be deployed immediately’’ he said, a soldier comes to meet the Major and whispers to him then leaves

‘’You have already been divided, when you return to your tents you will find a tag that tells you your battalion. The first battalion stays, the second will be deployed to Metele base camp in Guzamala under the name ‘Operation No Retreat No Surrender’, Is that understood?’’

‘’Yes sir!!!’’ they were dismissed; Biola goes back to see a tag on his bag ‘Battalion 75’, he was part of a battalion but didn’t know which, he silently prayed he was going to Metele.

A commander entered the room

‘’All Battalion 75 carry your bags and come with me’’ he said and walked away, they quickly grabbed their bags and followed the commander who led them to a military convoy, gun crates in front of the convoy

‘’You are all going to Metele. Load those crates in the convoy’’ he ordered and in twos they carried the crates into the convoy, they all enter the back of the trucks which soon zoom off…







It was a long ride through the streets of Bornu, hours later they arrive



Metele Military Base Camp

Guzamala, Bornu

The camp is surrounded with barbed wire fences, the truck approach the main gate, soldiers open the entrance and allowing the truck into the base, all the soldiers got out the truck

‘’You all come with me’’ a new commander said, they followed as he led them to their tents made from rusty Zincs

‘’I am Captain Ahmed Barwa, the assistant commander of this base, and I will be dividing you into 3 troops, the first troop will patrol 150meters from base camp to observe enemy advancement, the second troop will patrol from 12pm to 5pm, 200 meters from base; the third will patrol from 5pm to 12am, 200 meters; the formations keeps going round, is that clear?’’

‘’Yes sir!’’

‘’Good… drop your bags and get something to eat from the kitchen over there’’ he pointed then walked away…







It was already close to dusk, the new patrol team will be starting up tomorrow

At 8pm that night the new battalion had their eyes opened to the base plan of attack

‘’We have over 8 marked enemy territory here in Guzamala, we plan on attacking very early Wednesday morning because we got information that advanced weapons will be arriving the base early on Tuesday morning… so for now we tighten up our defenses’’ Base commander said

‘’I need you all to be at your best, this is the real fight, your trainings are over’’ he added; Biola on his own path was too eager to shed blood. Ibrahim wasn’t part of Biola’s battalion, so he had to stay back. That night Biola would look at the AK47 over and over before finally falling asleep





MONDAY 19th NOVEMBER 2018

6AM

There was a loud wake up call to summon all the soldiers for the morning, they got shared into troops, each troop having a leader as the new patrol team began their duty, the other troops went on exercise routine, trainings, morning chores, and other activities; it was a busy day

Biola was part of the new trainees, getting to learn new tactics, understanding some of the enemy’s attack plans and a few other combating skills, it didn’t take long to understand it because he opened his mind to what he loved, the training went on and on and breaks kept coming until the evening came when Biola’s patrol team was next



5PM

‘’Hey you’’ Patrol leader called Biola

‘’I heard you were trained with machine guns, Get on the gun truck, you are in charge of that’’

‘’Yes sir’’ Biola climbs onto the gun truck, dropped his AK47 beside him then positioned himself on the machine gun

‘’This gun truck and 10 of you are heading east, 200meters from base’’ instructions were given to other gun trucks to cover other cardinals.

Biola’s troop head out 200meters; the environment is full of bushes, mixed of green and brown, few trees scattered about the area, the road was wide enough for the gun truck to pass. The gun truck pulls over, the soldiers split up, two go into the bushes on the left and two to the right, the others cover the dusty path, the gun truck moves around then returns to the same spot, they continued patrolling for an hour then something happened







6PM

The soldiers patrolling seem to be separating from one another, 10meters away from the foot soldiers Biola observed the environment, and he hears quiet movement in the bushes. The soldiers backed Biola as they walked 15 meters away to the east perimeter, suddenly two men in white Jalamia carrying machine guns came out from the right side of the bush and quickly entered the left. Only Biola saw this and he suddenly lost speech out of shock and his heart raced (this was unexpected), the soldiers ahead didn’t notice then another two moved from right to left then a soldier turned and saw them

‘’We are under attack!’’ he shouted as he cocked his gun but was immediately gunned down by one of the terrorists, the others about to engage in gun firing but more terrorists come out the bushes and attack them with machete, Biola tried to open fire but couldn’t because he would be killing his men too, he looked to his left in the bushes to see the terrorists waste the two soldiers in the bush, only to look back on the road to see that all the soldiers have been killed with machetes. He was confused and scared, hands shaking; he managed to grab the machine gun and opened fire on the approaching terrorists and killing them. He suddenly hears the sound of glass breaking behind him, he turned to see stones coming from left and right of the bushes, he quickly ducks then grabs his AK47, the large rocks descended heavily, scattering the gun truck, the stone bust the heads of the men inside the truck as blood spills all over, Biola gets down the truck, he sees more terrorists coming at him, he knew he wouldn’t make it out there on foot so he moved to the truck door, opened it and pulled out the bloody body of the driver then gets in, he starts the truck then noticed the soldier he pulled out was still alive but couldn’t save him as the terrorists opened fire on him, Biola drives off, from the side mirror he could see them descend on the soldier with machete and stones. He couldn’t believe his eyes, he was scared than ever before, it was like his last days were here

Biola driving to the base camp heard heavy gun firing and launching of bombs, the terrorists outside the base numbered over 100, looking at the savannah on his left and right, he sees more terrorists coming out and heading to the base followed by gun trucks with Islamic inscriptions owned by the terrorists heading to the base with bigger and advanced guns.

There was no way he would go there and not get killed, so he diverts to his left to his left heading south, one of the terrorists gun truck goes after him, he drives through the savannah heading to nowhere in particular as the gun truck fired heavily at him, he drives the truck through bushes leading to a bigger bush, he then gets out the truck and goes on foot with his AK47, through the bushes he comes out on a foot path and runs to his left where an uncompleted building with no roof is located; the building was full of bushes and looked abandoned and dirty. Not minding what it looked like he ran into it to hide, clinching to his gun tightly as he squats and rests his back on the wall, he closed his eyes tightly and breathing heavily as his heart pounded hard, his hands shaking, he holds tightly to stop it from shaking, he tried to cry but couldn’t, he would be grateful to God if this was a bad dream but unfortunately it was not.

This wasn’t what he expected, he thought taking out the terrorists would be easier but his imaginations were completely wrong, the terrorists were well trained and good with ambush, they are fast and brutal, they had no mercy and for the first time Biola saw men get slaughtered before his eyes, it was his most terrible experience. Who would have thought he would be this scared on his first experience. The voices of the terrorists brought him back to reality, they spoke in a language he couldn’t understand, he couldn’t tell if it was Fulani or Hausa or even Arabic but he was sure they were talking about him; he peeped to see two men in army clothing and face masks, they slowly approached the building, Biola was still as they approached, he slowly pulled out a jack knife from his boot then lowered his gun and as one of the terrorist got with range, he grabbed his gun then stabbed him on the neck and used him as a shield as the second fired at Biola, Biola throws the knife at the other, the blade entered his head, Biola moved to him quickly then kicked him to the floor and stabbed his head over and over as blood spilled on his uniform.

He walked out the building carrying one of the machine guns of the terrorists, he could hear gun firing and bombs, he found his way out the bushes and was surprised to see the terrorists had greatly increased and probably everyone in base was dead. He walked 10 meters ahead then pulled out the binocular in his combat pocket, looked into base to see a lot of destruction and fire burning heavily with bodies on the floor, he quickly looked in another direction and is surprised to see the base Commander interacting with the terrorists while a soldier knelt down in front of him, the commander then gives orders to the terrorists and they move in different direction, the commander then shoots the soldier in front of him; suddenly Biola noticed a gun truck heading his way, he quickly runs off into the bushes but they already spotted him and opened fire. He finds his way into the uncompleted building, jumped through one of its windows and headed into the thick forest...



One thing was certain, he didn’t know where he was going but he was certain he was going to shed blood… who would have thought the base commander was a mole? Who knows how many bigger moles are in the army? How did these terrorists get such sophisticated weapons? Why did the soldiers have inferior and outdated weapons?

HE WAS GOING TO FIND ANSWERS OR DIE TRYING…
