IGBO socio-cultural think-tank, Nzuko Umunna, has threatened to drag Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu to court, if it fails to set up a judicial panel on the August 23 massacre of 22 unarmed Enugu youths

In a notice to Governor Ugwuanyi, made available to newsmen, solicitors to Nzuko Umunna and registered Trustees of Christian Network and Community Development, Edwin Anikwem, noted that victims of the massacre were having physical exercise when persons suspected to be State Security officials opened fire on the unarmed youths.

The solicitors said that unprovoked attack and murder of innocent and unarmed youths has caused unrest within Enugu and its environs as the citizens are living in fear of who may be the next victim.

The group, therefore, told Governor Ugwuanyi that as the Chief Security Officer of Enugu State, he was responsible for the protection of lives and properties of citizens of Enugu state.

“In view of the above, we urge Your Excellency to set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry as provided under the Enugu State Commission of Inquiry Law, Laws of Enugu State 2004 to ascertain the immediate and remote cause(s) of, the persons involved in the aforementioned killings at Emene, Enugu State,” the group demanded from Ugwuanyi


The proposed reliefs to be sought by Nzuko Umunna, if Ugwuanyi fails to set up the panel of inquiry shall include a declaration that the massacre of 22 unarmed youths violated Section 33(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap A9 LFN 2004 which guaranteed right to life and prohibits the killing of human beings without an order of court.

The legal team also indicated that the massacre violates the fundamental rights to life of the deceased and that Ugwuanyi’s failure to set up the panel amounted to a dereliction of duty; among demands for order of mandamus

They killed DSS? And how many did DSS kill? Or is it only DSS that their lives are precious? DSS went where people were having meeting and opened fire for no reason. Did you expect that those people will not fight back? Nobody has ever seen IPOB with arms except the authorities. Ohanaeze did not release any statement, statement that was signed by nobody.

A proper investigation must be conducted into this case because it was DSS that went to where there was no problem to cause problems

In civilised countries, if a group is proscribed, what the security agents do if the group gathers unarmed, is to use teargas, rubber bullets and several other non life threatening methods to disperse them. They dont open fire on them except if the situation has become highly violent or if they are armed.

As I said before, there are many Biafran organisations that are not proscribed and have the full right to agitate and protest for Biafra. Let the security forces tell is who IPOB and who is not

Because until that killing, it was never heard that IPOB, Enugu chapter, or any chapter at all, stole a pin, or mounted roadblock to tax people nor did they ever issue any statement on govt policy or whatsoever.

On the day of the shooting, both IPOB account and the account of the security forces, are in synchrony to the fact that those guys confined themselves to a space, conducting a peaceful assembly, a right guaranteed for them by the Nigerian constitution.

Again, the judgment that proscribed IPOB banned them from using any Biafran insignia. Now, can the DSS or Police or Army, produce one picture of Biafran insignia that showed they gathered I the name of Biafra?.

I think it is very important to note something. The only thing that was banned and proscribed was IPOB. Biafran agitation, its insignia and flag were not banned. These things have been existing over 50 years, long before there was IPOB. They dont belong to IPOB

“The shootings and killings were professionally and secularly avoidable but owing to crude, unprofessional, hate and racial policing applied in the instant case, the reverse was brutally the case. Joining them are different Pentecostal Church congregants and those of the nearby St Joseph Catholic Church who conduct their Sunday church services. 

“But last Sunday, 23rd August 2020, armed SSS personnel stormed the School Premises and violently disrupted clusters of persons assembling peacefully including some pro Biafra activists and religionists engaging in civil sporting activities such as martial arts and foot balling. The violence used had included violent arrest and firing of live bullets at close range with intent to massacre as administratively ordered or directed; leading to those hearing anti bullet charms withstanding same and refusing to run. Live bullets fired at close range by SSS personnel eventually hit and felled some ordinary or non-anti bullets charm bearers, leading to angers and tempers rising to a boiling proportion, forcing the SSS personnel to retreat. The crude and butchery deployment of armed soldiers, air force, SSS and various police crack squads by CP Ahmad Abdulrrahman escalated the shootings and killings and turned same into a massacre.

The commissioner of Police Enugu State, Ahmed Abdulrahman, should be thrown out the Nigerian Police Force. The man is a disgrace
