PoliticsThe Demise Of Common Sense by knotty(op): 6:20pm On Apr 14, 2010
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who
has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was,
since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He
will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the
worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend
more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children,
are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended
from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the
job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could
not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an
abortion,

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses;
and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in
her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement,

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by
his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son,
Reason,

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone.

Bishop, Arch or Ordinary

what you put above will fail in an examination, much more woefully than the other guy you wanted to hang by the noose.

but by the way, the word nigerian is an adjective and as well as a noun to mean inhabitants of the country Nigeria.
Adjectives, by nature, are subjective. so any search machine used to describe an adjective can never be accurate and will never be accurate.

if you want info about NIgeria, type Nigeria for correct up-to-date info. the only problem here is you will not get uptodate info from Nigerian websites. you have to look up to some other non-nigerian website for that.

here in this country, we download, we don`t upload.

that is why NL is getting so much traffic as it is about one of the few places you get recent and topical info about Nigeria.

Written by Nuruddeen M. Abdallah & Favour Haruna

In many households today, there are young girls  employed as housemaids while some are teenagers, some in their 20s, some are even as young as 10  years old. However, while some women treat them well, some maltreat them and more often than not, the husbands sympathise with them by reprimanding their wives.

The constant harassment or abuse from the wife towards the maid can ignite sympathy from the husband towards the maid, because this is something he sees all the time and can generate a soft spot for her .And while the wives may take sympathy and reprimands lightly, if the maid in question is 10-years old or so, it can precipitate discord in the family if the maid is a fully developed teenager or is in her early teens. The wife may accuse the husband of developing interest in the housemaid and some housemaids may also capitalise on the man’s sympathy and disobey the wife. In this situation, it only takes the grace of a true righteous person to control his emotion so as not to commit anything outside his religion or what he and his wife share which boils down to love .

It is not out of place to give to the needy, show them that you care for them, love them as if they are your own. It makes them work for you without any fear or favour, but when you decide to be difficult or wicked to them, there will always be a problem in one way or the other.

Sunday Trust spoke to a marriage counsellor, from Living Church Suleja, Mrs. Kemi Magbadelo, who said that husbands should not sympathise with the housemaid, instead, they should hear from both sides, that is, the wife and the maid, as  it  would enable them have a balanced story.

“When the wife maltreats the housemaid, my advice is that the husband should call the wife and talk to her properly, but if such attitude continues, he should allow the maid to leave the house because she can cause a problem in the home. This is because when there is constant quarrels between the wife and the maid, it will be better to save the marriage and allow the maid to go away.

“They can decide to get a male or a house help that can come and go home that same day. I prefer the house help because they are better and some of these maids are demonic,”she said.

A sociologist from the Kogi State University, Thomas Imoubu Gomment, said that the possible reasons why husbands sympathize with the maid , “include pity, passion, emotions, affection and dehumanization. It is an abuse. It  is morally and religiously wrong. It is barbaric. It creates an inferiority complex in the abused house girls. It makes them hardened, deviant as a result of stigmatization from their mistress. It kills their initiatives and makes them retarded. On a general note, it is a family related crime according to criminologists,”he said.

Malam Ibrahim, an Abuja resident said he does know why women, as mothers, maltreat housemaids, instead of treating them like their own children or sisters, adding that this has been a source of quarrels between him and his wife.

“Normally, my wife is not a hard hearted person, but surprisingly, she is very harsh to house girls. She shouts at them, and then one day, I saw her slap one house girl who is about 14 years old. I was angry and talked to her against that. And became angry, accusing me of wanting to marry the girl and sent her away. I call on women to see these housemaids as a trust. If a girl isn’t behaving the way you want, instead of you to maltreat her, just send her away,” he said.

Another incident that happened in Kaduna was that the affected woman( names withheld) had to be hospitalized for two weeks after her husband got married to her younger sister’s housemaid. The housemaid was also maltreated and even beaten by the grown up children in the house for the slightest mistakes. She was treated like a slave.

The man who was then a senior customs officer, was based in Lagos with his wife. He got to know the housemaid through his wife’s younger sister( names withheld). Explaining to Sunday Trust how it happened, the lady whose housemaid married her older sister’s husband said: “ It all started when I sent my housemaid ,Rabi to help my sister do some house chores whenever they are in Kaduna. Unknown to me, my sister’s husband had seen the village girl and even developed interest in her. It got to a peak, when Rabi told me that she was going back to her vllage in Katsina”, she said.

“About three months later, we were shocked to realize that my sister’s husband was getting married, not to anybody but Rabi, my former housemaid. It was a terrible experience. My housemaid became my sister’s mate. My sister spent over two weeks in hospital because of that incident,” she said.

Hajiya Amina, a housewife, said though she didn’t maltreat her housemaid, but she felt that some women do so to control the housemaid.

“Actually, such women see them as slaves because they are domestic servants. They expect them to be perfect and be at their beck and call. A simple accident of breaking a mug will make some women deduct the money of the mug from the maid’s salary. And I think the husbands sympathise with the housemaids because men are less wicked towards children than women, which is unfortunate, since women are supposed to be kind hearted as mothers ,”she added.

Charity,a housegirl in Gwarinpa, Abuja,  said  she spent a year in Lagos where  she was maltreated. The woman will beat her and some of the delicacies she cooked would not  be given to her.

According to her, she was overwhelmed when her new employer gave her everything they ate and did not abuse or beat her. “They are good people,” she said.

Robbery: Deposit your money with us, police advise petrol stations
National News Mar 29, 2010

By Kingsley Omonob

ABUJA—Following alleged robbery attacks on two petrol stations along Airport road, in the FCT, authorities of the Lugbe Police division, have sent instructions to the owners of petrol stations in the area to carry their money to police stations for safe-keeping any time they are incapacitated from going to the banks to keep such monies.

The advice came just as authorities of the FCT police command said they took exception to insinuations that policemen posted to provide security for filling stations, are conniving with unknown persons to perpetrate acts of robbery on such stations and cart away sales of such filling stations.

Speaking against the backdrop of alleged robbery attack on a petrol station where the sum of N3. 5million was allegedly carted away, the DPO in charge of Lugbe, CSP Olufemi Abaniwonda disclosed that he had during several meetings with the proprietors of the petrol stations, informed them that if any occasion should arise making it impossible for them to deposit their sales in the bank, they should bring it to the Police station for safe-keeping.

Given the Police we know, methinks it will be foolhardy to take your money to them for safekeeping. when police have been known to attack and dispossess stranded travelers of their money. will it make any sense to take your money to them for safekeeping?
even if you do and report the next day to claim your money, the money can never be complete.
what faith do we as Nigerians have in our policemen and women?

Toyota seem to be the winning brand in Lagos.
i ran a check at MM2 and the old local terminal, all the Taxi drivers there use Toyotas. obviously, it has to be with good reasons.

given the sorry state of Lagos roads, i believe any Toyota 4x4 product should do. i am going for one one of these days.

but in Kano, HONDA reign supreme.

Hoping for glance of Yar’adua, visitors throng National Mosque

[President Umaru Musa Yar’adua]

President Umaru Musa Yar’adua
Many people who came to the National Mosque, Abuja yesterday to catch a glimpse of ailing President Umaru Musa Yar’adua left the mosque disappointed. As early as midday, politicians, journalists and even worshipers started trooping into the mosque very early in order to get access to the front row or strategic position to enable them see the president.

Those who couldn’t make it into the mosque formed new rows in front of the VIP entrance to the mosque, all in a bid to see the president.

Although Speaker Dimeji Bankole and Secretary to Government of the Federation Mahmud Yayale Ahmed regularly attend the weekly prayers, the presence of former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Ahmadu Ali, Former Head of the Nigerian Security Organization and presidential aspirant Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi, Deputy National Chairman of the PDP (North-West), Bello Haliru Mohamed, some politicians and large number of photo journalists reinforced the speculations.

The rush to see Yar’adua, Weekly Trust gathered, followed early morning speculation that the president was billed to make his first public appearance in months at the Mosque during the weekly Juma’at prayer.

“I just came in to pray but my friend told me the President was coming that is why I have to pray here (front of the mosque) in order to see him,” a worshiper said. Weekly Trust gathered that the action may not be unconnected to a report by a national daily yesterday of concluded plans by loyalists of the president to convey him to the Friday Juma’at service.

The speculation was further reinforced by the unusual presence of anti-riot police and road safety officials at the main entrance of the mosque. Parking spaces were also secluded, further giving the impression that the president was truly on his way to the mosque. Even when the president didn’t show up, newsmen refused to leave the premises of the mosque after the prayers until everyone in the front row came out from the mosque.

Yar’adua has not been seen in public since he was flown out of the country on the Friday November 23, 2009 to Saudi Arabia for a heart condition and his subsequent return to the country in the early hours of Wednesday, February 24, 2010.

Jeep was a brand that had metamorphosed into daily English language usage.

this is not to be confused with Jeep which still remains a brand of Chrysler vehicle.

in fact today, the word jeep is a full verb complete with ``jeeped, jeeping`` etc.

i am concerned with the linguistic application of the word, pls.

that car above is a jeep, no doubt about it.

Billions lost in Kano’s worst market fire
Written by Lawan Danjuma Adamu, Jaafar Jaafar & Ruqayyah Aliyu, Kano
Friday, 12 March 2010 23:59

[The fire, officials say, is unlike any other in the state, ever]

The fire, officials say, is unlike any other in the state, ever
Over five thousand shops were razed by an early morning fire in the popular Kano textile market, Kantin Kwari, yesterday. Officials say it is the most destructive fire incident in the history of the market. Tens of fire-fighting vehicles were seen battling the fire, while a helicopter belonging to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was sighted hovering around the scene, spreading fire-extinguishing solutions.

Our reporters also gathered that scores of traders thronged to the market in order to salvage their wares moments after the outbreak. Many affected traders were said to have fainted when they saw the gravity of the inferno. One of the traders was declared missing after dashing into a burning shop in order to salvage his wares, while a Good Samaritan missed a step and died helping to extinguish the fire.
Weekly Trust gathered that the fire, which broke out around 1am yesterday, started from the makeshift stalls that dot the market and spread to eight shopping complexes in the heart of the market. Each shopping complex contains about a thousand shops. According to market officials, the fire started after a power surge. Spokesman of Kantin Kwari Traders Association Sadiku Ata said the fire began from the eastern section, before spreading to other shops and stands. The Operations Officer State Fire Service, Kassim Musa confirmed that, adding that initially firefighters had experienced difficulty in accessing one of the affected multi-shop complexes at Gidan Labaran due to congestion.
When Weekly Trust visited the scene of the fire, men of fire service were already battling the fire and vehicles from private organizations and good Samaritans were seen helping to put out the flames. A fire officer said NITEL cables helped spread the flames to other shops. He said the fire service learnt of the outbreak from a police patrol team, at about 1:30am. He added that 16 vehicles were immediately deployed to the affected area. Musa said the inferno was put under control at around 7:28am yesterday.
Alhaji Kabiru Sarki Sagagi, the vice chairman of Kantin Kwari Traders Market Association, said the first wave of the fire gutted some wooden stands and tables before spreading to nearby shops through NITEL cables. Corroborating the market spokesman, he said eight shopping complexes that were consumed by the inferno comprised that of Gidan Gwamnan Maradi, Gidan Bala Rabi’u, Gidan Bayajidda, Gidan Inuwa Memai, Gidan Alfa Wali, Gidan Madawa, Gidan Labaran and Gidan Ado Bashari. The vice chairman also added that affected shops number approximately 5,000.
The Public Relations Officer of the association, Sadiku Ata, informed Weekly Trust that after the traders responded to the alarm raised by the market guards, they found it difficult to access into the affected areas, as tables and stands that lined up the paths of the market were in flames. The PRO said: “There has never been a fire in the history of the state that has caused this much damage to property.”
He revealed that preliminary assessment showed that over N2 billion worth of textile materials were lost. Citing examples of those affected by the fire, he said a trader named Alhaji Umaru Hamza lost N60 million worth of textiles in one shop, while another trader lost N22 million in cash to the inferno.
Similarly, while speaking to our reporters at the scene, Kano State Commissioner of Works, Sarki Labaran, said: “This is the worst inferno I have ever witnessed in my career as a public servant.”
Equally, Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, sympathized with the affected traders, saying they should take the incident an act of God, after paying a visit to the market. He enjoined people in the state to remain calm and disclosed his government’s intention to investigate the cause of the inferno, with a view to compensating the victims.
Even as at the time of filing this report, the smell of burnt textiles and plastic hung heavy in the air. One of the people helping out, said tiredly, shaking his head: “This loss is just unfathomable. Where will they start from now? ”
