If you look at the sky, he will steal the land from under you and tell you its a "Protectorate". After declaring it a “Protectorate” he commences an orgy of rape, rapine, and kidnapping, then calls his victims “savages”. Don’t worry though, God sent him. The best part is that your brothers/sisters start nodding in agreement and calling themselves “savages”. |

budaatum: In Nigeria, almost yes, unless you read Arabic. Our forefathers did not read books. My own forefathers were divining Ifa. In most of Europe too, reading was by Christian education. The church needed preachers and bookkeepers so they educated. First of all, there was no Nigeria then. Second of all some people did read, so how was it “almost”unheard of? It was always the privilege of the few even when the Christians started exercising their power. So is christian education just Christians educating people in certain subjects? budaatum: Pre-Christian education of course existed. The Greeks and Romans had reading before Christianity, as did the Chinese, the Egyptians and lots of others who's education had nothing to do with Christianity before or after but it was mostly reserved for the few wherever it existed. Christianity proselytised to the masses by teaching reading, especially the Protestants who by defeating the flaming swords of unreadable Latin that barred it from the masses, handed to us in our own tongues. Well, reading was still mostly reserved for the few when the Christians started holding sway. That is until the printing press came along, and Martin Luther along with his benefactors wanted a piece of the papal extortion of the Germans. Contrary to popular opinion, the “scriptures” were never meant for the eyes of the lay people. budaatum: Us, Nigerians? DeepSight: Fair enough, thank you. Save to repeat that as I have said before - I accept evolution even if I question parts of the theory of evolution. And continuous questioning ought to be the stuff of science but these days you will find that questioning the theory of evolution is almost deemed a taboo. Let me extract a part of an old article I wrote -
[i] "The Theory of Evolution is not something that I dismiss at a personal level, nevertheless, within the scientific academic community, I cannot help seeing the same phenomenon play itself out: Evolution is scientific orthodoxy in today’s world and any scientist who conducts any research, writes any paper or expresses any opinion contrary to the Theory of Evolution will quickly find himself or herself in a most perilous position with respect to his or her career. There have been professors who have seen their careers come to a crashing halt for this. This is very sad – especially because science, of all endeavors, ought to be the in the vanguard of truly free and open inquiry in all directions. However today, there is hardly any difference between the scientific community’s approach to divergent views on Evolution and the attitude of the Roman Inquisition to heresy." Your argument is not supported by nothing but sentiments. The continuous questioning is what has afforded the theory of evolution substantial support. If a scientist writes a paper or expresses an opinion contrary to the theory, the scientist should be able to provide support for his work. Of course, some scientists’ proposed theories have been disputed in the past, but the proposed theories were later validated and adopted. Also those particular theories weren’t disputing validated theories like the anti evolution claims. Furthermore, the scientist has to wrangle with the evidence of evolution and the practical application of the theory in various fields of endeavor. The ostracized professors are just victims of their own ignorance. Besides, money is not lacking in this world so if your idea is sound, someone will sponsor it. The reason these “professors” can’t advance whatever nonsense they spew is because their opposition is borne out of religious fervor. The demented Christians in America do not lack money, but have they made any advancement with their “intelligent design” and “creationism”? So this argument of “Roman inquisition” is unfounded. For example, special relativity and general relativity have been validated and have been put to practical use. They help explain the world and have helped transform it, but at the end of the day, they are theories not facts. So the theories of relativity and evolution may be wrong about the facts of reality but they describe reality well enough to be useful. DeepSight: I don't think one needs to take a college course on evolution to be able to raise reasonable questions about evolution I’m pretty sure I suggested doing some research on your own and/or college to answer your reasonable questions. DeepSight: Also, your response to me could just as well been served in response to him,, dont you think. He got the response he deserved. |

DeepSight: Deranged, yes, derangically, never. Dtruthspeaker is right and you are arguing wrongingly. Words are sounds that refer to things or events in the world that one person is trying to communicate to another. The words make up language which is not set in stone but evolves. So “derangically” may not be correct grammar at the moment, but given the right circumstances, it can become part of the lexicon. I’m not endorsing his use of language but just pointing out that he communicated clearly albeit he writes in “derangically” style “The lonely bandit dwindled in front of the critic.” is a sentence that uses “real” words but once upon a time it was gibberish. |

DeepSight: Regardless how moronic you might consider his post, I am not sure that this ad-hominem soaked invective does anything to address anything, good sir. I for one, am tired of those who respond to any critique of the theory of evolution with the tired old lame line that the critique is too stupid to be worth a response. Even I, who believe in evolution, have serious questions about it, and honestly it is simply tiresome to have these sorts of haughty escapist responses when those questions are raised.
This is not to say that I have endorsed his particular line of questioning wholesale. I don’t care to address these people’s misunderstanding of evolution. I have no reason to dispute the theory or any other scientific theory that has been validated and put to practical use like evolution. If they or you want to understand it further,it is a google search away or you can take a college class. Opposition to evolution is usually borne out of incredulity stoked by religious or similar sentiments. If scientific knowledge in that part of the world was up to snuff, theory of evolution would have been used to eradicate malaria by now because countless people and resources would have been devoted to it. You wonder why Africa can’t produced vaccines?! But I digress. My haughtiness is directly proportional to their sanctimonious ignorance. That been said, evolution is also the state of the universe. Nothing is permanent but change as they say, so what is really far fetched about biological evolution and all it entails? So when some people say the universe is fine tuned or ordered, their assumptions are not supported because everything is changing and to claim order/fine tuning is to imply a goal that they have no support for. I’m not saying I am an expert in biological evolution, but there is no reason for me to argue against it. Now if I had a problem with it, I’d go study it and then try to disprove it. The only reason the religious don’t argue against E=MC2 is because they don’t view it as a threat to their beliefs. |

efficiencie: Your conclusion about DOg being a supernatural ape is based on the assumption that since man has similar characteristics with Apes then DOg must be an Ape but your assumption has flaws. (1) You mention "Ape" like that is the description of a single specie and you claim DOg must be like such a specie. Presently there are about 20 species of apes (Source) so which of these species is the exact form of DOg. Remember you have to search for the earliest specie of apes in the evolutionary tree. Good luck with that search. (2) For your statement to make sense you have to also assume that man evolved from Apes (and hence Apes were created in the image of DOg). However there are questions you cannot answer concerning the evolution of man from apes. (a) Evolution still cannot conclusively tell us how matter transited from inorganic to organic. (b) Evolution could not explain the Cambrian explosion. (c) At what point in the evolutionary tree did the mind evolve? (that is even if we know what the "mind" is) (d) We are yet to discover the site of the mind-body interaction and we also don't know how mind-body interaction evolved. (e) Evolution does not explain the evidence of intelligent design observed in all of creation (the double helix structure of the DNA, the fine-tuning of the cosmos with the incredibly fine precision of physical constants, the comprehensibility of the cosmos and the incredibly impossible odds that the universe generated information by accident (origin of information accident).
These points all attack your tacit recourse to evolution as the basis of your argument! Quite frankly you have to be an undisputed champion among fools to believe that random undirected events happening over billions upon billions of years could account for the amazing levels of complex ordering we see today. Someone will tell me that the appearance of the Fibonacci sequence in flowers, plants, crustaceans etc is a sheer accident. Madness on an unimaginable level. |

Hence the current form or physiognomy of a man is borrowed from God (Ezekiel 1:26). God feels emotions. He can get angry (Exodus 32:11). He can be pleased (Hebrews 11:6). He has a compassion (Genesis 21:17) etc. I told a Christian that if man is made in the image of god, then god is a supernatural ape. Of course he vehemently disagreed. DeepSight: God ITSELF is, and always will be, utterly ineffable. Ineffable is a fancy word for nonsense. It’s ineffable because it is nonsense. It is ineffable because after rubbishing the extrapolation of a human being, with all its accompanying superlatives, that is god, you’re left with abstract nonsense. Language works by creating mental pictures which are based on objects in reality or an abstraction of such objects. I can tell you about an upside down tree that has rainbow colored leaves and golden sap. Even though no such thing exists in reality as we know it(it’s possible such a thing exists somewhere in the universe) you and another person can still create similar mental pictures of it. God, soul, spirits, and other metaphysical jargon do not create mental pictures like that because they are nonsense. It’s either god is described as a powerful human or defined so abstractly that no mental image comes up. Your interlocutor above states that “ If God is God then He is a singularity without origin and without end.” Apart from the opening tautology, the rest of the statement is meaningless assertions from a mind infested with the god idea and ignorant of science. If I’m being magnanimous, he is doing nothing but describing the universe. These people can never define the soul, can’t prove its function, and can’t tell you where its located but they are so sure of it. Same thing with their gods, spirits, and whatever fantastical creatures they’ve been taught to believe exists. God is not ineffable. God is nonsense. If there is a thing or things with the ability to do the actions attributed to Mr. God, that thing or those things are ineffable. |

Myer: If I may ask. If you're neither an atheist or a theist, then what are you? I have my own personal philosophy which entails gaining understanding of concepts both profane and sacred. The concept of god is nonsense. All knowledge of god come from books written by people. The god people believe in is mostly dependent on the accident of birth. God/Divine Providence/The Diety is an idea created by the earliest star gazers/priests/law givers who were at the head of nascent societies that later grew into different levels of civilization. You can imagine how the night sky must have looked and how they must have inspired the ancient people. Over time, they realized they could predict natural events by looking at the movement of the heavens and that knowledge would have been used for profane reasons like agriculture. They also made up stories about the heavens and those stories are what later developed into myths, allegories, and scriptures to serve sacred purposes, like rites and rituals. Apart from salving existential fears, the concept of divine providence/god was used to buttress laws. If you have made people believe in a god through stories and other tricks, you can manipulate them using god as an unquestionable authority. The Pentateuch is a masterpiece. The definition of god is dependent on the theist’s indoctrination, intellectual prowess, and vocabulary. But at the end of the day, once you parse the words, it becomes clear that this god is either an extrapolation of a human being or something defined so abstractly, they might as well be speaking gibberish. Whatever god they argue for is also dependent on the accident of birth. Who birthed you? Where were you born? That determines your god. You hardly see people on here arguing for the Hindu trinity because they weren’t indoctrinated with the Hindu trinity. They argue for (and don’t understand) the Christian trinity because of accident of birth. My personal philosophy has lead me to a cogent explanation of god. The atheist is the other side of the god coin, with the theist on the over side. I have a good idea of what the coin is made of. They argue about things like “original sin” but I have a very good idea(with evidence) of what tje “original sin” is. The greatest scam in the history of man is the Catholic Church. They are not the original scammers of course, but they perfected it. I’m not saying there’s nothing independent of the physical world. There is no way to know that. That’d be like a 2 dimensional being trying to see a 3 dimensional object. P.S. if you’ve seen a Marvel Comic movie, you’ve probably seen the creator of these characters appearing on screen. The man that appears is Stan Lee, the creator of Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man, who was driving Peter Parker’s school bus in the movie Endgame. Compare him to the Magi who gave Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Magi made an appearance because they were earlier authors of the allegorical storytelling that is the story of Jesus. |
