AbuTwins: So what does Proverbs 19:21 below mean? Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail. And there are more below! Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope. Isaiah 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will accomplish.’ Ephesians 1:11 In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will, Job 42:2 “I know that You can do all things and that no plan of Yours can be thwarted. Psalm 33:10-11 The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations; He thwarts the devices of the peoples. / The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the purposes of His heart to all generations. Isaiah 14:24 The LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely, as I have planned, so will it be; as I have purposed, so will it stand. James 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.” / You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. / Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.” Psalm 115:3 Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases. Acts 5:38-39 So in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone. Let them go! For if their purpose or endeavor is of human origin, it will fail. / But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God.” Lamentations 3:37 Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it? Every single one of these verses when considered in the original context is directed back at the same people of Israel whose God— YHWH— raised a standard — Law— over them stipulating they can only reap what they sow meaning that nothing happens by chance to them as it will all be according to their deeds —choices and actions —as individuals as judged by the Law. This contravenes the ideas put forth by those who believe in destiny/fate. |

12inchess: ➜... My problem is that I long for the simpler days which I believe are long gone now. I think I need some growing up to do but it's just so hard for me given my loneliness and depression. I really need a way out before things even get worse. I can conveninetly survive unpaid at my job for a few months but since I just started less than a year ago I think they will take me as unserious if I suggest leaving the job for a break. The process of getting my Greencard also took quite a while and I feel I should make the best use of it by making as much money as I can since I now have it but I also don't want to harm myself mentally in the course of doing that. ➜I go to a Nigerian church before but it was all about pay tithe donate money this and that so I lost interest. ➜I'm really at my wits end so please keep the advises coming and reading everyone of them and will make a decision based on what I receive here. Thanks! 1. Does your wife know of all of this you are going through at this point in time though? Given that you are married, it would not be right of you to decide independently. You two should sit back together and figure out the best way forward instead of making that plan all by yourself. Having your wife as your support partner in this is a great idea. If you have yet to sign up for mental health therapy sessions to at least help you better understand what you are dealing with, I suggest you do so. And if possible, have your wife also educate herself on the struggles involved with depression so she can help you get in any way she can afford. 2. Discard religion for your own mental health's sake abeg! You are more likely to gain more— social intelligence at least— from walking into a bar somewhere and watching people relate with themselves than you are from those churches, or churches for that matter. 3. Seek out professional health therapy and also join online mental health forums where you can discuss with others what you are going through. That kind of support equally helps you resolve the underlying reasons for your particular problem —your particular fears and worries. Keep a journal of your thoughts and ruminations— guilt, shame, worries, fears, etc. This could lead you to the reasons for your depression and also help you tackle it at its very root. |

Helpout12345: ➜ Exactly. Those American antidepressants hardly solve the problem. They are just there to manage it for the rest of your life, if they don't even make your situation more worse. I am not a doctor but this is my observation in the US. Stop lying to him. I took anti-depressants for many years and I can swear by them any day that they were the best things that ever happened to me as the depressed soul I was before it all. By the way, antidepressants are not meant to "solve the problem". Rather, they are to help people with mental illness manage their condition so that they can live a life that at least comes close to the one they prefer. Give them more control over an otherwise uncontrollable situation that is mental illness. If the mental illness is there for all of your life, what would you rather the mentally ill do? Refuse to use what is at least available to help them live a more comfortable life. |

Zzyco: ➜ Discuss with your GP, Lithium antidepressants may have a slight role in fertility. I guess this is where the underlying issue emanates from. Nigeria man no dey get depression, even if he goes to prison we are not wired that way man. ➜ Find an African church first, connect with them, work for charity and you will realise you have a lot of energy within you to do more things. Secondly, leave this oyibo food, find Eba, eat Nigeria meals only for one month. Go for walks in the evening with your partner, confess positive words into your day when you wake up every morning. Profess strength, happiness and joy. Say words like today I have every reason to be happy, I am a strong Nigerian man, nothing stops me. Lastly, the Bible has everything you need, God has not given you the spirit of fear(depression) but of power, love and sound mind! (2 Timothy 1:7) Nigerians no dey get depression yet growing up in Nigeria, I not only grew up a depressed mind but I also knew of at least 10 cases of possible suicide where I lived in Ikorodu. Most of them were written off as evil spirit cases and all the other religious nonsense Nigerians are notorious for. Come on naw! 🙄🙄🙄🙄 Na so una dey always use lies to deceive and delude people. 12inchess: ➜I know that. I was in Nigeria in 2023. But I virtually miss home. I am homesick AGAIN. You wouldn't understand if you've not lived abroad for long. I am the one wearing the shoe and I know where it's pinching me. I have lived abroad longer than you have. I also dealt with the same afflictions you listed and a lot more. I went through a long period where I longed for this fabled home as you do now. But I eventually realized it was my mind busy playing tricks on me all of that time. My entire family is here by the way yet I kept struggling with this longing to go back to Nigeria as though I was meant to be there and not here. You need to get to a place where you see that it is the depression in your brain that is making you think you are lonely — you have a wife for Pete's sake — and alone, you have colleagues at work and you can easily meet people anywhere you go here but somehow you have entered this tunnel where your mind insists they are not right or will judge you wrong or whatever else that, for lack of a better phrase, the demon of depression is telling you there. You need to want to step out of your depressed self to get out of the tunnel you have been stuck in for as long as you have. They say home is where the heart is and even with your wife right next to you, your heart refuses to consider where she is home. That ought to serve as evidence that something is surely not right and needs dealing with. As for chronic fatigue, you should consider exercising more at least to give yourself the feeling of having some life even with that. I became a cyclist for that very reason to push my body as much as I could. For many years, I rode my back to school, work, and every place else — my bike remained my main means of transportation. The thing about cycling is you can imagine your tired self sitting and just needing to move your legs one at a time powered by adrenaline and it works wonders on the mind. |
