Humility017: then...if you know Ramos too do have bad days...then awaziem shouldn't be left out... the dude too had a bad day. omeruo playing in that match won't have prevented the SA from winning the eagles that day... someone like Mikel and V.Moses presence would have made the difference not playing omeruo Oh my man I thought u have settled with Michael2 on Omeruo and Awaziem. Well,Awaziem should not have had bad day in his debut for Eagles,Omeruo good days outweighs his bad days in eagles,u already said it that u love Omeruo of old and not Omeruo of late. One of d serious question asked Rohr by technical committee was why did he used Awaziem and he gave his answer which i reasoned with him that after watching two two draw with South Africa he decided to drop Omeruo, meaning that if not for South Africa,Omeruo should have started but Rohr have option in Ndidi as CB coz the guy is also comfortable as CB.instead of Awaziem. I don't Rohr w give Awaziem another call up for now, talk less of starting him against Cameroon, pls go and watch d match again and analyze Awaziem sincerely on that match, then we talk. |

jerryclinton: It still baffles me how Alloy Agu remains our goalkeeper trainer. He himself and Ike Shorumnu were not very good keepers you can easily recall their exploits when they played for super eagles. To me they were average and at times fringe keepers. Why is Peter Rufai never our goalkeeper trainer? Their exploits in eagles colour doesn't matter but are they sincere with their jobs coz an old goalkeeper trainer who had his career with eagles in 70s known as Amusa Adisa discovered Enyeama and told Onigbinde point blank that Enyeama must be in goal against England at d expense of Shorunmu. This decision paved way for Enyeama and he has been enjoying it till this moment, first Coach Adisa was able to discover d talent in Enyeama and he gave him necessary confidence to excel and d young man grabbed d opportunity. |

Icon4s: @ your first paragraph. That's why I said I can only consider Odegbami and Chukwu among Nigeria's top 10 best.
I know Felix Owolabi(aka Owoblow) Wella. Growing up way back some of us used to take his identity on the field of play. Particularly wingers.
Adokiye was good as a winger but I still rate Emmanuel Amuneke ahead of him.
Amuneke that was so lethal that his every move was electrical and would always create panic in the opposing defense. Created and scored lots of important goals for Nigeria even with his short stink in the national team owing to injuries. To play for Barcelona FC no be beans o.
He and Finidi were rated among the best Wingers in the world then (though no official ratings)
Talking about WC slots. Even if there was only one slot available for Africa in that 1994 we would have taken it. Gba bee.
Muda Lawal was a midfielder then right? Can't remember. But if he was, compare him with the likes of Oliseh and Okocha.
The 94 team erased the numerous heart aches we had in the 1980s.
O I remember one clip I saw of the qualifiers for the 1978 WC. Tunisia Vs Nigerian. A Tunisian player called 'Hagger'. We lost that game either 3-0 or 3-1 after losing the first leg 0-1 in Nigeria. Yes truly we have a great squad in 1994 but that doesn't guaranteed our qualification coz it almost slip away in cote d voire where we lost by 2 goals to 1,this match cost Siasia his starting line up in Eagles when he refused to give a cleared pass to Yekini and brought an end to Reuben Agboola career with eagles. Due to this loss we needed to wait till last match against Algeria which ended 1 goal apiece before our qualification was guaranteed whereas Cameroon already booked d ticket. In other words not all good team make it to d world cup,a slip in a match can be an obstacle for qualification.Remember how France lost to Bulgaria prior to US 94,just 5 mins to d end of d match. Icon4 good to share old memories with u. |

Icon4s: I am not faulting Odegbami's analysis of the SA game.
I was only elaborating on what someone said about his choice of Nigeria's best players.
I may not have followed the 1980 AFCON but o have memories (though faint) of the end of Odegbami's generation. IE 1982 WC qualifiers and 1982 AFCON. Even though most of the memories were re-televised matches I watched in the mid 80s.
If I want to make a list of Nigeria's top players ever from that era I will only consider Odegbami and Chukwu.
The 1994 Class had better quality.
Odegbami and his mates that could not qualify Nigeria for any world cup? Then playing teams like Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt was like Arsenal playing Barça or Bayern. Pessin go almost piss for body.
I have a 90mins video of that Nigeria '80 AFCON final. The standards displayed by the Nigerian players was nothing compared to the 94 Class.
You cannot tell me Adokiye was better than Amuneke. Amuneke from 1994 to 1996/97 was about the most deadly left winger in the world!
I know those guys played good football then. Apart from the popular ones like Odegbami, Okala brothers, Chukwu, Adokiye, Muda Lawal, Ogedengbe, Silvanus Okpala, I still recall some Like Okey Esima, Tunde Bamidele, Haruna Elerika and so on.
But I think they (Odegbami and Co) are over exaggerating their abilities . They are not much better than the Maroc '88 team IMO that had Stephen Keshi, Austin Eguavoen, Sunday Oboigbe, Ademola Adeshina, Henry Nwosu, Samuel Okwaraji, Rashidi Yekini, Wole Odegbami, Monday Odiaka, Bright Omokaro, Peter Rufai, and Co. My man am not saying they are better but d likes of Odegbami,Chuckwu, muda Lawal,Adokiye and probably Henry Nwosu w break into Eagles US 94 squad. Mind u not qualify for world cup should not be your yardstick, this team closely make it and remember then to qualify for world cup in Africa was tougher and it even takes two team to make it. Nigeria was able to make it for d first time in US 94 when there was added slot for Africa. In d 80s it was Cameroon,Morocco,Algeria,Tunisia,Egypt making swayed. Oh 1980 standard to 1994 standard would just be like comparing 1982 world cup standard to 1994 standard but player like Paulo Rossi of Italy w make any team of US 94 or what do u want to say of Dino Zoff of famous 1982 world cup or what do u have to say about great Pele who is still regarded as d best player ever despite playing in 60s Remember till today Netherlands still rate Johan Cryuff leading team of 1978 world cup as d best till today in Holland history. What of England that are still rating 1966 world cup team as d best, pls can u compare d standard with England 1990 semi finalist. 1980 nations cup was a strong squad than 1988 maroc team, wole Odegbami,Folorunsho Okenla,Sunday Eboigbe,Ndubuisi Okosieme can not make 80 nations cup squad. Pls forget the modern day rating,Adokiye w bench Emma Amuneke anytime anyway.I told u Adokiye displaced great Owolabi from that position, just to tell u how highly rated Adokiye was at that time.Pls tell me a player Amuneke was benching at that time,Victor Ikpeba abi but Ikpeba cannot make 1980 squad. |

He said Akpeyi is the worst Eagles goalie ever. He forgot there was one Chigozie Agbim. Hahahaha. Pls pls don't get Segun Odegbami wrong,he was able to analysed d match in his best way just like any normal football pundits and what he said or raise was factual and u(Icon4)have said d same thing here,d team need mixture of experience and young ones who are in form!simple. On Odegbami naming his old eagles as d best, well go and watch eagles of 1980 and compare and contrast with different generations of Eagles, then u w agree with him. I had d opportunity of watching different generations of eagles and i can tell u i w pick Odegbami over Finidi George anytime anyday,a winger just like modern day Christian Ronaldo.Remember Segun Odegbami had 23 goals in 46 appearances for Eagles, just to tell u how good big Segun was in Eagles shirt. Do u remember Adokiye Aimesimeaka, very good winger better than Emma Amuneke, pls go and watch d video clips of Adokiye, this guy pushed Felix Owolabi back to left full back position just to tell u how good was Adokiye. Christian Chuckwu one of d best CB to come out of Africa, very reliable and dependable, only Keshi can compete with this man or may be Uche Okechuckwu. Hope u know Mudashiru Lawal,a great midfielder that went to 76,78,80,82,84 Afcon, only Olishe cam compete with this man. Henry Nwosu a great archon and creative midfielder that i w rate only Okocha ahead of him,pls go and watch Henry Nwosu at maroc 88.He made d star studded 1980 nations cup as a teenager. This team should have been d first to qualify Nigeria for world cup in 1978 but Odiye denied us by scoring an own goal(d first golden generation of Super eagles 1976-1982) |

Humility017: how about the assist omeruo gave....the Zambian in Ndola...? was that not an aerial ball I don't hate omeruo....but everyone is making it look....as if omeruo playing that day would have make any difference.... same omeruo that gave rantie an assist few years ago and same RSA played same pattern they played few days ago no difference... I don't hate omeruo....but the truth be told...his inclusion on that day won't have make any difference..... Pls give little respect to Omeruo, honestly after re watching two two draw with South Africa,i said to myself was it not d same Omeruo of 2013.I watched him keenly against Zambia and i discovered psychologically d guy hasn't got over it coz apart from that blunder,he had a very good game even than Ekong, honestly with those blunders,no coach w put Omeruo in CB except a coach who can work on him psychologically. As i said Omeruo deserves little respect coz comparing Awaziem with him is absurd, for God sake if we want to drop Omeruo, not for player like Awaziem, that's just d fact coz d guy bring nothing to table to justify his inclusion. Rohr goofed big time and he need to be upright in his tactical approach.Remember Uche Agbo was dropped from d camp but later recalled and Ogu later played as CB in camp and Ogu was in superb form even as CB but rookie Awaziem who lack d talent of Iheanacho or Osimeh made d team but Ogu who can give us options either in d midfield or defence was not in d squad and three DM made d match day squad. If Rohr was not comfortable with Omeruo,Agbo, why not use Ndidi who can also, play as CB,why not makeshift just like Ndidi played as RB against Zambia, though not perfect in that match but after watched Zambia match again i discovered that Ndidi did normal thing as a defender, clearing,go for aerial ball.Ndidi as CB against South Africa,d first goal would have been avoided coz such cross w never beat him but Awaziem oh too amateurish in his game.. |

Icon4s: All just because Alampasu didn't make match day squad. Haha haha
The truth is there are no good goalkeepers in Africa any more. I mentioned this fact months ago.
If I look into the NPFL for instance I can't even think of any goalie that is credible enough to face Cameroon in the absence of Ikeme.
No just mention Alampasu o bc that game go be like horror movie. I no go watch.
I don't even know why Emmanuel Daniel is being ignored. I have more confidence in him than Alampasu.
Let us see the goalies Rohr will invite against Cameroon. Icon4 remember we had a discussion on d need for Rohr to look at home front for players but guys here kick against it saying they are not good enough for national team but now we are having serious issue in goalkeeping and defence. The same thing happened to Keshi prior to Afcon 2013 coz at that period we lacked quality defenders in Europe,Keshi look inward and discovered Oboboana,Eguekwe,Odunlami and moved Omeruo to CB when Yobo was losing it. Rohr need to look inward coz we are lacking quality defenders in Europe and this was d reason a Porto B defender needs come in as CB and there is need for us to stop this attitudes of always forcing our players to early retirement coz I don't know why player like Oboboana was not considered for invitation again despite still playing in Europe. On goalkeeping, well we have seen what happened against south Africa that in d absence of Ikeme we are in trouble coz I don't see Akpeyi,Ezenwa,Alampasu stepping into Ikeme shoe for now but I believe Austin Ejide and Dele Aiyenuga are still active,d duo are still better as cover up,i remember at a time Spain always have Casillas,Valdez,Reina in d national team,so what stop us from doing d same. |

Dont worry, cameroun game is next. We will see how his expereience plays out. Experience. Experience, how did Echiejile fair in that game? Would u honestly beat your chest and say he had a good game?
I think we still dont get it. We lost the game from our midfield. Talking about rookie defender or whatever the case is , is practically immaterial. We have seen good midfielders make defenders look soooo gorgeous. And when all that is not in place, Same defenders get jittery. And thats just exactly what happened. We lost the game from wrong tactics and bad midfield combo. PERIOD! Anyone but omeruo please Good, experience sometimes doesn't count and sometimes it count.I w never called Ndidi a rookie coz he is having a great playing time in Europe facing good class of players week in week out but Awaziem lack it in his club and it really showed against South Africa, such player cannot do it against Cameroon. On Omeruo u are absolutely right coz South Africa and Zambia show it all and no good coach w gamble on him as CB unless d coach is ready to work on him psychological. Let us just hope Balogun w make it but to be on safer side player like Oboboana should be recalled to make d competition thick in d defence. |

TheGoodJoe: We can run in circles but the fact remains, when Rantie nodded that ball, it was close to Akpeyi and he should have saved it. The ball was close to Akpeyi. Pls go and ask Peter Rufai what happened between him and Keshi against cote d voire in semi final at Afcon Tunis 94,d same scenario nothing difference from what happened between Akpeyi and Awaziem. It was d match that cost Keshi's place in Eagles, just a weak corner kick but Keshi refused to jump and nod and before u know it Rufai was caught napping, just, last week Rufai tell d story. He said Keshi why and Keshi said oh Rufai i thought u are in for it but Westerhoff said Keshi u are at fault. Funny enough against Cameroon, some are agitating for Osimeh to lead attack, pls on what criteria,Rohr boy Abi even Iheanacho is on hot seat now,Rohr knows what is at stake,no need to gamble on any player. |

Joebie: Yes we need players that love to play for Nigeria. Because when problems come players are the first that can be affected psychologically. Well the game at hand is Cameroon. Many of us will resume the arguments once again as regards player selection. In football, 1+1 is hardly 2. Which is why we have to take every situation differently. We lost the South Africa game for many reasons than one or just two. I'm really hoping that Rohr will be more tactical going forward. And will do LOTS of studying the opponent.
I just watched the Senegal-Nigeria friendly again, because I think that match is one we have to look at in planning to play Cameroon. Football is a science. Your best players will not necessarily play well in every match they feature. Cameroon is a very physical side. they are big and also robust. They can convert half chances in forwards like Vincent Abubakar. Why your favorite player could be very good in his own right, he may be reduced to nothing against an opponent like Cameroon.
I think we have put so much weight on players like Iheanacho and Iwobi prematurely. Let's be realistic to realize that these players have not FULLY established themselves in Europe with lots of TOP games under their belt. While they have a very bright future, they are not reliable starters especially against Cameroon.
Let's continue the debate constructively with our next opponent in mind devoid of favoritism. Jobie God bless u. |

kennysville: If akpeyi did what he did that led to the 2nd goal in a professional league in Europe, he will promptly be axed! Plain and simple
Lets get something right. A goalie is also a part of the defence. And so as the last line of defence with a one on one situation, and he had closed the attacker down, the logical thing to do is to prevent the guy from making any further contact with the ball. If he had to jump the guy, so be it. Worst case scenario, he gets a red card. If we lost 1nil, we wont be this annoyed. In europe, its called taking one for the team. We could at least hustle and still get a draw. Moreover the incident happened way outside our18 yard box. The moment the 2nd goal went in, the morale was totally down.
So in my books, Akpeyi desevedly got the sticks or bashing he deserved Akpeyi getting red card, ten against eleven and u think we survive it. |

goldfish80: I think we should get over our mindset that good players cannot be found outside the major leagues. This assumption will hurt us real bad in the long run.
I understand we want to brag that our first 11 are all big players from big leagues but without putting into cognisance the balance of the team and formation being implemented by the coach. Where I'm going in all of these is that guys like Adi, Ideye and Nwakaeme will suit a lone striker system better than Kelechi. But it appears we don't want to hear those names because they aren't in the big leagues. The minute Adi or Nwakaeme gets a contract with a Seria A club, they will be called up. That can't be right.
Some of us kicked against the invitation of Osimhen ahead of the Adi and co. With the benefit of hindsight, one could argue that Nwakaeme, Adi or Ideye would have posed the South Africans a bigger problem with their hold up play.
The South Africans hate playing against bigger opponents. Recall it was these same SA defenders and goalkeeper Uche Nwofor took to the cleaners in their back yard with a brace. He even scored khune with his back heel.
If Kelechi must play, he needs a big strike partner. Absolutely right if Nacho must play,he needs a partner who understand d game not only good partner but perfect midfield combination of Ndidi,Ogu and Mikel Obi coz we need big men who w shed d defence and yet assist d attacks, not running around midfielders busy doing nothing as we played against South African. |

My man u are right but do we need to give reason for anybody's poor performance against South Africa. If we are trying to give reason for Nacho poor performance and bad conduct after substitution then we must give reason for Akpeyi poor performance to defence!abi what do u think, honestly enough of comments trying to shed any player from blame. The whole team was a disaster, mehn losing at home, two goals against South Africa.Imagine some are even pointing accusing fingers at Nigerian assistants not even Rohr for God sake. My man our eyes w soon clear against Cameroon if Rohr failed to do d needful, imagine a Porto B defender starting up in Super Eagles line up and some are still expecting Alampasu a rookie and third division goalkeeper to manned d post for Eagles. Honestly our player invitation should be review coz i don't see any reason inviting Ndidi,Onazi,Agu all DM and left Ogu out of d squad especially in d absence of Mikel Obi.Do we think Etebo can do d job?capital No,he lacked d class. We need to ask Rohr one big question, what really stopped him from inviting Ideye to camp coz seeing Ideye,Mikel and Nacho build up towards Nacho goal against Zambia shows that pairing of d duo w suit eagles, though against Algeria Ideye was on d bench but we have Moses Victor on d field doing it with Nacho. Rohr should not be deceived about all this rookies,it is only talented ones that can break into d team and gel not average ones like Awaziem,Ebuehi even talented Iwobi is not finding it funny. I just hope Ikeme,Mikel,Moses,Balogun make d party against Cameroon even Ideye and a fit Anichebe coz am seeing physical and brutal Cameroon side. |

Icon4s: Your first paragraph is just the summary of why our attack could not break down the SA defense.
For eg in that first half Iheanacho was practically kept off on several occasions. There were through balls from the midfield in that first half but they were either intercepted by their organized CB pairing or they kept Iheanacho off.
To rescue the situation, Iwobi had to play wide to pull usually two of the defenders to him. Expecting a disorganization of the CB pairing which could have given room for Iheanacho to operate. But his lack of athletism limited him to wide positions plus the SA defenders made sure he never made progress into the their 18yards box.
Etebo in an attempt to break the defence started making solo runs - what he is known for but his finishing touches let him down as he was always putting himself in a difficult position to aim at goal. Etebo's problem now I think is the 'Jack of all trade but master of none'. I think we need to define the role he will play for the national team and confine him to it. I recommend the CM. The role he played against Algeria.
Simon Moses has not improved a bit. He is not a starter IMO. He tried to use his skill and pace to outwit the SA defenders but his crosses were either not timely or too wide. At a point he was just playing crosses not directly targeting any player and expecting a miracle to happen.
Iheanacho was not much involved in the game. The major highlight I have of him was the pass he gave to Etebo that he missed. Secondly were the countless times he was caught in off side positions. The SA coach probably after seeing Iheanacho at City has understood that the only way to stop him from playing is not to allow the balls to get to him. We saw that happen several times at City this season. Iheanacho rides on the back of good Atracking midfield and wings play. He is still our most lethal finisher.
Kayode substituting Iheanacho was when the game ended for Nigeria.
Let me analyse Rohr's thinking before the substitution: We were on a 4-3-3 formation and under sparadic attacks from SA. Depleting the midfield further by removing either Iwobi or Simon would spell more doom. In the balance of play SA was having the upper hand in the midfield at that point in time. He left the two wingers and pulled out Iheanacho with the expectations that Kayode who is more of a natural striker than Iheanacho would have been able to use his pace and skills to outwit the SA defenders on a one on one basis. Alas it turned out that Rohr over estimated Kayode's abilities. At a time in the game I asked if Kayode was still on that field.
Musa's introduction was to introduce more direct play as Iwobi was practically kept wide and we made more incursion into the SA defense as he was even able to combine well on one or two occasions with Kayode. But the player to finish those moves was not there. Had Iheanacho been kept in the game.... who knows?
Osimhen, was the final trow of the die. We were 2-0 down already and so he just had to gamble by pulling out Simon. Osimhen made some good touches and edge of the box moves but not good enough to make anything happen.
Mikel and V. Moses would have obviously made the difference. What the SA defenders did was to keep Iwobi and Simon in wide positions something Moses would have been able to break with his dribbling skills, pace and direct play. Mikel would have been able to break down the organised SA defense with his dribbling skills, ball holding and shielding abilities plus timely release of the ball for Iheanacho.
If it is doable I would have pleased with God to take Mikel's age back to at least 25!. We are not ready to move on without him.
All these wahala was bc we met a very organized defense.
Then also I think Rohr spent more time focusing on our strength and not much on SA's weaknesses while reverse was the case for SA.
I have the belief that we still qualify. We can also beat SA away.
I wish Ikeme, Balogun, Mikel And Moses quick recovery. They are the back bone of the team. August in not far away again. God bless u for simple analysis not all this stupid, myopic, hatred, self centred, zero analysis that are flying all around d thread. Nigeria lost two goals at home, some guys here are still trying to defend their chosen players telling us nonsense with loaded but empty comments. Thanks Icon4 for this coz am just fed up with team Onazi vs team Ndidi, team Iheanacho vs team Kayode, team Akpeyi vs team Alampasu etc guys are running from reality here but posting thrash. Lets start from goalkeeping, what can we do when Ikeme is injured and Enyeama said no more Eagles but have poor Akpeyi, average Ezenwa, rookie Alampasu.Rohr should just do d needful by persuade Enyeama back coz availability of Ikeme is 50 50. The defence of Shehu,Echiejele,Ekong,Awaziem, just check it out too poor for Super Eagles.Awaziem a rookie with Porto B team pairing Ekong who is just coming up as CB beg for answer. What can we say about RB coz it seems Rohr is confused,Musa Mohammed had it against Tanzania,Ndidi against Zambia,Omeruo against Algeria now Shehu against South Africa. The LB has been d issue but Echiejele remain d sure starter until w see a capable replacement who can turn things around.Hope Balogun w be available against Cameroon to tide things up. Oh d midfield!that should be our unique selling point with players like Mikel,Onazi,Ndidi,Etebor,Ogu,Agu,Esiti but reverse was d case against South Africa coz we put all our eggs in d same basket. It's time for Rohr to either start Onazi or Ndidi, playing two together is out of it.Etebo needs to know football is about intelligence not moving around like endless chicken, funny enough this guy was even rated than Mikel by some guys in this thread.I do not understand why John Ogu was omitted from match day squad for rookie like Mikel Agu who was a DM like Onazi,Ndidi for God sake. There was this arguements that Agu could have been a better option for either Onazi or Ndidi but i disagreed coz d same scenario w repeat itself, pls forget Chelsea theory of Kante and Matic, this is Super Eagles.Hope Mikel w be available against Cameroon but am seeing Rohr going back to Mikel and Onazi or Ndidi combo. On the attackers,on this thread somebody said Iheanacho w not find it easy against towering and physical South Africa defenders and it came to pass.I w not blame Nacho much coz midfield of Onazi,Ndidi especially Etebo who always believe he is a goal scorer than create chances,in this regards Mikel is important and am seeing Ideye coming in(pls watch Nacho goal against Zambia)and u w understand. Iwobi just need to be on d bench for now coz he has lost d form, though some are trying to give excuse for d guy like moving him to No 10 position forgetting no matter d position form of a player matter most,Iwobi should just try and discover his form.Honestly nothing to say on Musa and Simeon Moses coz they are unpredictable, also nothing to say on Kayode and Osimeh.Hope Victor Moses w be available to give us options in d attack. The technical crew, everything stop at Rohr directives and i believe South Africa match is an opener that a lot need to be done coz naijas are not that patient when it comes to football. Also i want to disregard some elements here calling for the head of Nigerian assistants under Rohr especially Alloy Agu sack for fielding Akpeyi, honestly if calling for Agu sack is football reason no issue but i realised is coz their favourite keeper was not fielded. Pls don't be racist against your fellow Nigerian just coz of sentiment.I still repeat it d fall out of South Africa match was due to technical errors and only Rohr can tell us what really went wrong. All we need now is to learn from d match and move on |

TheGoodJoe: You are making it look as if keepers do not save close headers. They do and that ball was close to him. We can not change that fact. Haba for once try and accept peoples verdict.Everybody agreed with u that Akpeyi's performance was below average but d two goals was not his fault even Rohr said it yesterday that d first goal was not his fault coz no keeper w have answer to it and he said d second goal was one on one which can beat any keeper, though he was not satisfy with his overall performance just like any other players on d field. |
