joseph1013: LOL. I'm Yoruba because I ask that whoever opposes him should counter with facts and not muddle the water with name-calling? Is that how tribes fall on people? So next time I defend another person from another tribe, I become a member of his tribe? It's that easy? Show some intellectual acuity na? This is obviously a shallow attempt at engaging intelligently in the discourse. This issue started yesterday btw humility 017 and sir forgiveness and i try to come in which humility responded in a good way but u know what sir forgiveness has his own philosophy when it comes to player invitations which we must respect him just as we respect other people's opinions here without a rancour. Honestly i hate d word tribal and tagging someone tribal can bring up issues especially in a sensitive country like ours, this made me run from political section in nairaland,we should not turn this thread to politics. To be candid it w take talented Yoruba or Hausa to break into national team coz d game belong to d south east and south south but nevertheless if forgiveness was rooting for his kinsmen,d first question is are they good for d national team but tagging him a tribal man is uncalled for. I know some monikers here who are worst than forgiveness but it w take a third eyes to notice them coz they do it in a way u w never know but they are tribal. For instance have seen a moniker who always attack Onigbinde and tagged him a tribal man coz he took Opabunmi to world cup forgetting the same man gave Enyeama his first break,d same Onigbinde made Keshi eagles captain at d expense of his kinsman Muda Lawal at afcon 84.The same moniker attack Odegbami at any slight moment forgetting Odegbami made it possible for Chioma Ajuwa to win Olympic gold coz he was responsible for her upkeep and training to Atlanta 96,d same Odegbami made it possible for Nigeria to play England at Wembley. The same moniker attack Kayode Olarewaju even before his invitation to super eagle with no reason, also attack Juwon Oshaniwa now doubting Ola Aina ability but there is no need to tag such fellow tribal man coz this is a forum and there are rules that guide it. A lot happen here when it comes to player selection and a lot are always carried a way with sentiments and we must respect their opinions, no need to generate issues, we are all here to learn or gather information,d thread is so beautiful to extent is d leading thread on nairaland and we must respect those who started this thread coz they make it what it's today. |

Joebie: Lol oya Kayode faithfuls attack lol That's d truth, half fit Keshi was in US 94 squad at d expense of fully fit Isaac Semitoje, half fit Amokachie was in France 98 ditto to Amuneke who made Atlanta 96 despite lack of fitness in any team we always have special consideration but Kayode has not merit such consideration. No coach w drop Nacho for now coz his pedigree is high and its better to have fit Nwakaeme over half fit Kayode coz they belong to d same class. |

Joebie: If he was really impressed with Kayode he would have got a recall. Other players fitness were also in question. I don't think the coach will take much of his time explaining every of his decisions. I believe he just gave quick answers. There are other factors he considered especially for this Cameroon match up. I remember him saying the opponents is also one factor he considers in selection. Kayode has not merit such special consideration to be invited half fit but player like Nacho,Mikel,Moses can be invited half fit if they believe they can do it or do u think Rohr w invite half fit Nwakaeme or Awaziem to camp |

Joebie: I know say you sabi English o.. I never even use that word "better" since.. no be una they suspect foul play say Nwakaeme was invited, why not Kayode?. I only said Nwakaeme has proved his mettle at a higher stage considering UEFA Champions league qualification. If the stats prove me wrong, I will concede. But let's not forget many factors are also put into consideration in player selection.
I have never said nwakaeme is better, or vice versa. last last, dem go reach camp. It's either Rohr likes what he sees, or he don't. Sorry for misquoting u by using word 'better' am not suspecting any fowl play over Nwakaeme invitation, Rohr ve said it that Kayode lack fitness coz he did not have much game during pre season which I quite agree All I want is d result irrespective of player invited for d match, have been watching d game for long,so I always watch it with relaxed mind but nevertheless d best should be called to national team. |

Joebie: I hope you are being sarcastic again. Nwakaeme has prooved his mettle at a higher stage than Kayode. Iheanacho has always been better than Awoniyi. Nwakaeme better than Kayode?champions league abi,No my man that should not be d yardstick, hope u remember a player called Mike Obiku of feyenord in d 90s,this guy was a bomb but still find it difficult to displace Yekini or even get a call up to displace Siasia or Amokachie, also Richard Owubokiri of Boavista who had it so good in Europe but couldn't make it in d national team, hope u remember Chris Ohenhen. I'm not saying Kayode is better than Nwakaeme vice versa but basing your argument on champions league play off,I w never accept that On Awoniyi and Nacho we should not go into that coz they belong to different class, Nacho is on another level that I believe Awoniyi is aspiring to be,so case close. |

Icon4s: Not just some but all eventually.
My own is the transition should be gradual and must lead to improvements. I believe u have been following this game for so long and it's simple 80% of this present squad w make d team to Russia, only special talent w gate crash into d team just like d way Olishe,Amuneke make d US 94 team during qualifier and Chidi Nwanu,Mike Emenalo break into d main team by displaced Isaac Semitone and Nduka Ugbade respectively after Tunisia 94 Afcon. Truly, goalkeeping aspect is for grab for anybody coz d opportunity is open,Ikeme is down,Enyeama coming back look dicey, Akpeyi yet to prove is equal to d task. RB,I see Ola Aina as d answer but need to wait for his debut game but he has every thing to claim d RB,Echiejele at LB,well I can say much but a good player in d mould of Aina w be an answer, though Echiejele still has d experience. The CB is okay with d pair of Balogun and Ekong, hope player like Awaziem can raise his game and Omeruo can regain his form but any good rookie can break into this team. D midfield is saturated with a lot of options either in DM,CM,AM with player like Mikel,Ndidi,Onazi,Ogu,Agu,Etebor,Iwobi,Esiti etc so it w take a rare gem to break into this team, also attacks is full of options with d likes of Nacho, Ighalo,Musa,Vic Moses,it w take special talent to displace this guys. |

[quote author=forgiveness post=59839460]Based on past glory theory some players should not be on the list. Number one on the list is HENRY ONYEKURU. Zero goal, zero assist and *cough*that's it. Number two on the list is KELECHI IHEANACHO... Zero goal, zero assist and 8 minutes of game time. Chisos! While Ahmed Musa don score for the only match he played and Moses Simon has done nothing special as Henry though he has more game time than Onyekuru yet some people want them out just because of ONYEKURU. Can Onyekuru play free kick better than Simon Moses? can Onyekuru play SS, RM, AM, LM & CF better than Moses Simon? OK, Taiwo Awoniyi has scored 1 goal and assisted twice in 3 matches, why is he not mentioned or called? Is this not present glory? Based on Rohr claims of lack of game time one player ought not to be in the team.. Kelechi Iheanacho...... Why did Rohr exclude Kayode Olanrewaju? Mafians ruling the national team as a cult. I guess. [himselfOga forgiveness u don start,u should know a lot here have their favourite players and based on that they passed their judgements, some are too tribalistic and it take a third eyes to know that, some don't want to see certain player coz of their preference for their love for certain player. If u see Onazi receiving knocks,u keep on wondering was he not d same Onazi, some are even rating John Ogu,Mikel Agu,Anderson Esiti over him(pure hatred)even last match he had better rating than Ndidi but their excuse was Onazi did not give room for Ndidi to express himself.I believe only Ndidi should be compare to Onazi for now and anyone of them can do d job, personally am okay with either Onazi or Ndidi. They want Musa and Simeon Moses out for who if I may ask, some even question invitation of moses and Musa but based on Iwobi performance in d last three matches for eagles, does he deserve d invitation? Due to rumour going round that likely Iwobi is going on loan to Turkish league,d berated Turkish league that a lot castigate here but hearing Iwobi likely move, some are now saying we should appreciate Turkish league. |

Icon4s: Monday Odiaka was initially the most shinning star from the fantastic 1985 U20 team that finished 3rd at the WYC. In fact Monday Odiaka won the golden boot in that tournament. From the crop only Andrew Uweh and Ndubuisi Okosieme made the Maroc 88 AFCON squad. But Siasia later managed to transit into the Super Eagles. In fact his first AFCON was Senegal '92 Daniel Amokachi was exempted due to injury I think. Amokachi first featured at Algiers 90.
Samuel Okwaraji was the SS to Yekini in that '88 AFCON. Amokachi took over from Okwaraji.
Amokachi was Nigeria's first choice Supporting striker to Yekini.
That Nigeria Vs Argentina game you made reference to see the way Westerhoff lined up his team:
.......................Rufai
Eguaveon..Nwanu..Okechukwu..Emenalo
..........................Oliseh
..........................Siasia
Finidi.................................... Amuneke
............Amokachi ............................Yekini.
Samson Siasia played Central Midfield (surprised?) while Amokachi retained his SS spot.
I remember vividly that Sissie's selfish incidence against Ivory Coast. We were losing 2-1 in Abidjan. Yekini was unmarked and on-side. Rather than for Siasia to pass to Yekini he blasted the ball wide. Westerhorf also axed Reuben Agbola after that match.
You come to think of it that there was also "the head master" Mutiu Adepoju in that team. But he was a fringe player even with his qualities . Can ever get to that level again?
So my brother I still defend my not including Siasia in my 1990-1999 first 11. Good analysis my brother i think Monday Odiaka won bronze boot and Samson Siasia made it possible.Siasia was like golden boy of that era that comprises player like Austin Igbinbairo,Wahidi Akanni,Osaro Obabaifo,Andrew Uwe,Alloy Agu,Ndubuisi Okosieme Amokachie did not make Algiers 90,yet to be discovered but mostly on d bench during afcon Senegal 92 qualifier, couldn't make it not coz of injury but advice by Westerhoff to cement is place at club brugge than warming bench at Senegal 92. Siasia was d first to broke into super eagles among Moscow 85 team even not as a bench warmer but a starter,if u can remember eagles failed to qualify for afcon 86 losing to Zambia in qualify stage, this paved for Moscow 85 team but Siasia grab d opportunity and pls tell me apart from Siasia which player among 85 had it so good like Siasia in d national team. Siasia not making maroc 88 was due to club engagements, remember Keshi played only two match at maroc both against Cameroon at group stage and final due to club engagements, this was a period African team find it difficult to have their best at Afcon. Siasia was integral part of d team that played qualifying matches to maroc 88 and Seoul 88,comparing Adepoju with Siasia is absurd, they belong to different class when we talk of national team. Remember as at 90s Siasia was d second highest goal scorer behind Yekinni. Good to have Amokachie but I w pick Siasia over him when having Yekinni as a striker, just my opinion. |

Mickael2: Onazi is definitely living in past glory. Musa and Moses Simon too, Moses Simon's own is even worse because I really don't even know which past glory he is living in, the coach just like a him. I just named three players that I think are living on past glory, now lemme name three players that can easily replace them; Kayode, Onyekuru, Dressier,Onuachu, we have forgotten Fanendo Adi let me not go on.
you want to know why Onazi needs to be dropped? easy, because we have better players in that position, let me not even get into the technical aspects. I however agree that he is a vital utility player, but a starter? No no Oh when it comes to Onazi, honestly am not surprise at your comments coz I expect it,so nothing new(team Ndidi) Ahmed Musa, nothing to say coz he is having it tough in his career at d moment,Simeon Moses I can't really say coz I don't rate him much but I believe he had a better game than player like Iwobi against South Africa. So if d likes of Iwobi,Awaziem,Ndidi,Nacho,Echiejele,Abdullahi,Akpeyi got invitation, then no fuss about moses Simeon invitation. |

Joebie: Nice one!!! I can disagree with a FEW omissions/additions, but like you said it's strictly your opinion. All the same, great contribution!!! Thumb up for this but not see Samson Siasia on d list of 1990-1999 call for little debates coz Siasia still remained d best partnership of Yekini, though Amokachie came into d scene and when Siasia was made a scape goat for our lost against cote d voire but nonetheless I w pick Siasia over Amokachie anytime any day. Pls go and watch Nigeria vs South Africa and see d great combo of Yekini and Siasia, also Senegal 92 and Nigeria qualifying matches to Seoul 88.Their striking partner still remained best and till today we haven't got one except few glimpses of KANU and Agali in 2001 world cup qualifying and afcon. Samson Siasia deserves to be in your squad, despite d knock he received against cote d voire for not giving Yekini a pass,Westerhoff still find it difficult to bench him at US 94,pls check his goal against Argentina,d goal remained one of d most intelligent goal score in d history of world cup. I always rate Siasia along KANU when it comes to intelligence, and this was d reason he remained most shinning light of 1985 under 20 squad he rose to become integral part of late 80s and 90s super eagles, ask Monday Odiaka and he w tell u most strikers prefers Siasia behind them coz he does it well. Mickael2: I can bet my house that Aina won't start, however let me just dissect what we have here.
Watch Moukanjo's stats, this is not the kind of guy that stays on the wings trying to stretch play. He is always coming inside, looking to shoot or picking up loose balls. I think the remedy to this guy is to operate a very compact right side and that's where Victor Moses has to be utilised as the proper wingback he is. Moukanjo is going to be running inside, we need Aina to keep an eye on his piercing runs so Moses has to operate as a fullback when that happens.
Forget this stuff, Aina has a poor one-on-one stats, if he approaches this guy one-on-one he may get roasted, so we need him to be covering the guy, instead of marking him one-on-one, again VicMo comes in here because he will be assisting as the second RB Good to be back on this thread, well let see how everything goes coz I see Aina starting. On one on one situation,Aina belong to d class of defenders that read d game very well. |

Joebie: in fact, the science of the game have long been studied and used to the detriment of many African teams. With our African way of holding on to crude ways of doing things. Take for example the Chile game. I've watched other Cameroon friendlies that they have lost woefully. Although you can see that the Cameroon players are talented, but they are always outsmarted by clever tactics. This is where South Africa got it right against us.
Yes Sir TheSuperNerd we really need to look at our preferred formation and also assign roles to maximize the strengths of our top players. Where is that creative midfielder who can dictate the tempo of the game? Where is that player who can string all kind of passes with ease? We have enough forwards in our teams who can perform very well with the right midfield structure behind them. In today's game you can survive and even win tournaments without a true number 9, especially since dedicated winger roles have been almost discarded over the years. Today, we only speak of Left, Right and center forwards, who can play all three roles. Granted, we still have true number 9s. But you can't go on searching for a true Number 9 if the player is not readily available. Still speaking of the midfield, it seems we have many holding midfielders these days. However having one play on the same matchday can spell problems if their job is to do almost the same thing. I think for balance sake and for a good flow even if a player has many qualities he should be assigned a role, not saying he will not use his other qualities, but based on the game plan he will need to do more of one role than the other, and another player do the other more. I think a player like Ndidi has improved a lot in his passing game -- judging by the Senegal friendly. Let's talk about these roles, because this was the major problem in our midfield versus South Africa. Like I said earlier, the problem was not player selection in the midfield, but roles assignment. Let's talk about Onazi, Ndidi, and Mikel. How about Ogu, Esiti, Etebo? What roles should they rather play in our winning 4-2-3-1 formation for example. Also considering an opponent like Cameroon. Hmmm i read your beautiful post and that of Supernerd, but my submission is this,we already have a team that beat Zambia and Algeria but due to injuries, players like Ikeme,Mikel,Balogun were out, also Moses was un available,Omeruo couldn't make d starting lineup The South Africa match have come and gone but we learnt a lot but d technical crew learnt more than us,there should be no emotions or sentiments in their own analysis of things,is either they performed or kick out. Whether we like it or not Cameroon game we be decisive coz of age rivalry, being Africa champion is a plus for them, also being a leader in our group is a great advantage to us,all we need is to go back to basics coz we started well under Rohr but something went wronged against south Africa and must be addressed without sentiments. Rohr first assignment was Tanzania match and later Zambia but against Algeria he brought out his XI team, namely Ikeme but injured,Akpeyi came as a replacement,Omeruo as RB,Echiejele as LB,Onazi as DM,Balogun and Ekong as CB,Iwobi at d right midfield,Victor Moses at d left side,Mikel and Etebor doing it at central midfield and Nacho doing it upfront. The match against South Africa saw lot of changes especially due to injuries to some players and this brought imbalanced to d team and Rohr failed in this aspect, for instance d pairing of Onazi and Ndidi was an eyesore,it is not compulsory for d two to make starting lineup, despite Kante of Chelsea rise,he is still a second fiddle in French national team,Benzema despite wearing Real shirt, find it difficult to break into French national team of late. Despite the presence of Onazi,Ndidi which i believe is enough for now, some are clamouring for Esiti, whereas Agu is in d waiting,do we need to invite all this guys coz i realized they are all DM.Instead of inviting Agu and Esiti we need to give room for attacking midfielder like Ajagun or put Iwobi in his right place so that absence of Mikel w not be felt. If care is not taking Rohr we still get it wrong against Cameroon coz looking for a striker at this time to prosecute Cameroon match is out of it,we already have Nacho,Kayode,he should just add Ideye who is already part of d team and move on. Rohr should just revisit his XI against Algeria with omission of Akpeyi and probably Iwobi with Ideye coming to d line up to give Nacho chance to do his things. My line up against Cameroon is Ikeme in goal and 4-3-3 formation with Omeruo, Echiejele,Balogun,Ekong in d defence,Onazi,Etebor,Mikel in d midfield,Moses,Ideye,Iheanacho in d attacks, just hope no injury set in,this team we do it against Cameroon. |

goldfish80: When a football man talks, you cannot help but listen. Respect to you Mr Mastoroudes. He talked like someone who followed the after game analysis on this thread. .................
Mastoroudes : Super Eagles Have Capacity To Overcome Bafana Setback; Must Fight Cameroon ‘Fire To Fire ’
By Nnamdi Ezekute: Veteran Nigerian football administrator and onetime boss of Leventis United FC of Ibadan has predicted that the Super Eagles will stage a strong comeback following a disgraceful 2-0 defeat to Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo, Completesportsnigeria.com reports. Nigeria host Cameroon in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on August 28, looking to win and extend lead in the Group B of the African qualifying zone. Mastoroudes, slams Gernot Rohr's team for confronting South Africa without grit and losing disgracefully at home, but believes the Nigerian side has the capacity to bounce back on winning note if the coach and players get back to work with the hard lessons learnt. "I am still optimistic they will bounce back. Yes, we lost the first match of the AFCON qualifiers, but we haven't lost everything. There are still many matches to play. We were wounded but we're not out yet," Mastoroudes tells Completesportsnigeria.com. "Cameroon is the next game. We must resolve to stand up to them fire to fire. "I saw Cameroon against Chile at the FIFA Confederations Cup. They have speed, great physique, height and power. It is a very important game to play, and we must win it to qualify for the World Cup. "I am convinced that Nigeria can fight well and win when they have their back against the wall." The Greek-born Mastorodes continues on his desire to see the national team his adopted country bounce back from the loss to South Africa. "We did not play well in that match against South Africa, so losing it was inevitable," reckons. "I felt that the players approached it like a friendly match. It's like they didn't realize the importance of of the game. I was very disappointed with their performance. Like I've always said, the new crop of Nigerian players coming through have the capacity to go far, but unfortunately they didn't show that promise against South Africa. "I notices too many weaknesses in the team against South Africa. For example, the two full-backs were so much below par. "The Eagles initially held the game but lacked creativity to to last the distance and then allowed South Africa to come up in the match. "Going forward, Moses Simon was holding the ball, doing all sorts of tricks, but his final touches were so pathetic. Ahmed Musa was a disappointment when he came in. Most of us believe Musa is fast, but many African defenders are faster than him. His speed was completely neutralized by the Bafana defenders. "Iheanacho was played completely out of position. We need a top class centre-forward. The forwards were substandard against South Africa. I did not see one Nigerian forward that I liked in the match. "I was also very disappointed with Arsenal boy, Alex Iwobi. He didn't play well in that match. "The only player who impressed in the midfield was Onazi. He fought like a lion, but unfortunately, he was on his own. "I think we missed players like Mikel Obi in the midfield. And of course, we missed Victor Moses. He is such an important player for us. Without him against South Africa, the Super Eagles lost 50 per cent of his capacity. "Going by the selection that played South Africa, I can say we don't have a team. We should just forget that match and concentrate on the future games. "I have confidence in the capacity of the talents Nigeria have. We need to work very hard going forward. Hard work is the alfa and omega of every team. I believe we can improve. We should look for and get the right players to man the positions we have found to be weak. We have the players." He also challenges Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr to brace up with the lessons he must have picked from his howlers against South Africa. "Yes, the coach is to blame when the team loses, but it's a very good lesson for him. When people talked highly of him – about having not lost a match, I said good, the team must play more matches to test him properly. He may not have expected the players to play badly like they did even with his selection lapses, but it's a lesson for him going forward," he says. "It's up to the coach now. He should get the right players for the positions. We have them out there. The team must work harder and play African football. This is important. They must play African football, not Oyinbo football. We have the talented players who will play that brand of football and make the difference."

Mickael2: Oga arrogance is not the way to go. I remember before we met SA it was 5-0, going into the second half of that game we started saying 2-0, by 70 mins we were singing ' he is a miracle working God ' Thank u Mike,we are all guilty of this arrogance but in reality we still have a long way to go,no where to run to than to put our house in order or else another story against Cameroon. |

Humility017: yes ooo...I am so happy hopefully they loose the other two matches and then come back home... qualifying from these group will greatly boast their confidence of which I forbid... ***rohr is always watching... it is only salisu Yusuf one should be bothered about.... if he is watching too....likewise agu. because I think they all gonna get fired and praised at the same time... Oh Rohr is watching but Salisu is not watching?why are u so racist against your Nigerian brother for God sake, losing against South Africa is purely Rohr's fault,he is d boss.Remember Olishe resigned ir fired but Agu was retained, just to tell u d boss carry d blames. If Rohr is not satisfying with their performances,he should say it out instead of all this blackmailing against Nigeria assistants, mind u Rohr have foreign assistants working with him but funny enough nobody saying anything about those guys. When we won Zambia and Algeria did anybody mention Salisu or any Nigerian assistants,it was Rohr all d way but losing to South Africa,Nigerian assistants are d issues.Thank God no home based was fielded,it would have been hell or let say Awaziem is home based player. If i may ask does Rohr need any Nigerian assistant tactically before he can beat South Africa coz i don't understand your remarks'hope Salisu is watching' It seems some of us believe anything about foreign, truly they are sincere but that does not mean they don't have their weakness. I remember euphoria that greeted Bonferre Jo when he won Olympics gold and d euphoria of Samson Siasia 2008 Olympic team, despite playing with young team. Also euphoria of westerhoff Afcon 94 team and Keshi 2013 Afcon team, despite winning Keshi was bashed up and down with undue criticisms. Pls let appreciate and respect our own, though they are not better than d foreign ones but we need to show love not unnecessary remarks |
