Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed Kemi Badenoch as Children and Families Minister, as part of his government reshuffle.

Kemi Badenoch has been the MP for Saffron Walden since 2017 and replaces Nadhim Zawahi who has moved to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Olukemi Olufunto Badenoch was born in Wimbledon to parents of Nigerian origin. Her childhood was spent in Lagos, Nigeria and the US before she moved back to the UK at the age of 16.

The minister’s responsibilities include early years policy including inspection and regulation. Her portfolio includes delivery of 30 hours free childcare offer, special educational needs including high needs funding, safeguarding in schools and disadvantaged pupils – including pupil premium and pupil premium plus.

Following the expiration of the Value-Added Tax (VAT) exemption on Stock Exchange transaction commissions, investors and dealing members of the capital market, are now required to pay VAT for transactions carried out on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

The order on exemption of Value-Added Tax (VAT), which became effective on Friday, July 25, 2014, was valid for a period of 5 years. Thus, it expired on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.

Deduction of VAT will be effective from Thursday, July 25, 2019, barring any further extensions from the Federal Government.

Henceforth, the commissions that attract VAT include the ones earned by Dealing Members on traded values of shares and the ones payable to the NSE and the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS).

In the circular, the NSE also disclosed that CSCS would automate the deduction of VAT charged on commissions payable to the NSE and the CSCS. Dealing Members are required to resume the deduction of VAT on commissions earned.

The only major developed nation that taxes its citizens (and green card holders) regardless of where they live is the United States. So long as you hold a U.S. passport or green card, the Internal Revenue Service wants its cut of your profits and capital gains.

The United States taxes all U.S. persons on their worldwide income. A U.S. person is a citizen, green card holder (who is a legal resident but not necessarily present in the United States), and residents. A resident is anyone who spends more than 183 days a year in the United States.

Apparently some are ditching their US citizenship, perhaps for tax reasons.Even our incoming prime minister gave up his about 2-3 years ago after the US slapped him with a huge tax bill.

The interest is paid every quarter (i.e. every 3 months) into your bank account. At the end of the duration of the bond (i.e. the tenor), you are paid the initial amount you put in.

For example, if you subscribe with 1,000,000 Naira for 3 years and the interest rate is 12%, you will be paid 30,000 every three months (=12% of 1,000,000 = 120,000 Naira every year).

Note there are no charges - no VAT, no capital gains tax, no withholding tax - on the interest you are paid. There are also no charges to pay to your stockbroker or the Federal Government in order to subscribe to the FGN Savings Bond.

An aircraft built by South African teenagers has successfully landed in Egypt three weeks after it set off from Cape Town.

The four-seater Sling 4 plane was assembled by a group of 20 students from vastly different backgrounds.

The crew landed in Namibia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zanzibar, Tanzania and Uganda during the 12,000km (7,455 mile) trip.
